1) Great location, we were there in busy August and streets and walkways on the north side of the river were so crowded felt like you were in the process of getting out of a concert. The Rebello's location is perfect. Still walkable to the highlights, but on the quieter side of the river with a fantastic view. 2) Service was excellent, friendly, youthful, excellent English. We were traveling with two surfboards and they took care to unload and store them. 3) Rooms were beautiful, everything is very new. Over the top gift basket of local delicacies. 4) Wonderful view from the rooftop restaurant/bar. Would definitely go again.

This is probably the most spectacularly situated hotel that I have ever stayed in, and the quality of the service and facilities are also quite extraordinary. It is in the perfect position on the Douro river with incredible views of Porto and the Dom Luis I bridge. The hotel is a beautifully restored old port wine house which remains authentic and true to its roots. In front on the water are the old Rabelo boats, much as they have been for centuries. The service is stellar, the rooms flawless, and there were no facilities that were lacking. There is an indoor pool and spa, with sauna too. The rooftop bar has some of the best views in Porto/Vila Nova de Gaia (and that’s a tough ask because Porto is hilly)! We also enjoyed the food - I had the octopus tapas dish which was amazing, and the Tiramisu and lemon tart were also special. This was an experience of a lifetime. If we ever visit Porto again, we will not think twice about where to stay.

Back when SLH had a partnership with Hyatt, this property came into my radar planning my trip to Portugal. After seeing photos of the pool/spa, I immediately knew I wanted to stay here. Booking direct through the hotel instead of via Hyatt actually was more favorable in terms of price but also what they included which at the time was a promo for an upgraded room and breakfast.

Location: I took a train up from Lisbon and got off at the Gaia station which is before going into Porto. Initially I thought I could get an Uber or taxi, but the station was pretty empty with no taxis around. With no wifi or mobile connection, I wasn't able to get an Uber so I ended up just walking. Fortunately, it was a downhill walk to the hotel from the station and it wasn't bad at all. After sitting on the train for a couple hours, it was a nice stroll. This hotel isn't actually in Porto, but right across the river in Gaia which was perfect for offering the best quintessential views of Porto and the Douro river right from your hotel room! The area is so small and easily walkable or via ferry across that my initial worries about location were quickly relieved.

Room: I believe all rooms look out to the river so there isn't a bad room here. My room had an outdoor balcony/patio space which allowed me to open up the doors and let the fresh air in while hearing the sounds of the bustle of the river activities. The room is quite spacious with dining area, a small kitchenette area, and sitting area. The bathroom was large and had an ADA shower. The complimentary snacks and bottle of wine were such a treat and really impressive in terms of the offerings. I couldn't consume it all so I took them back as gifts for friends/family.

Highlights: The pool and spa. The breakfast was among the best I've had at a hotel and I probably ate the best pastel de nata here! The service was friendly, cordial, and professional. At check-in they even walked me up to my room to make sure it suited me.

I also had lunch at the rooftop which offered spectacular views overlooking the Douro river. The restaurant wasn't busy at all and it was neat to see they have a resident falcon to keep pests away (probably sea gulls?).

Overall, this hotel was a highlight of my trip and I've recommended it to friends for their trips to Porto as well. A true small luxury hotel!

My husband and I have just arrived home from
A 4 night break in Porto for our wedding anniversary ( after spending 3 nights in Lisbon.)

Loved this new hotel. Loved Porto!

The decor was lovely; modern, clean lines, very tasteful.

I had opted not to pay the extra for a river view as was more interested in a spacious room. The room we had was like a suite with a beautiful kitchen/living area with a huge comfy sofa, large tv and a huge balcony with seating off this. Then a separate bedroom with huge wardrobes and lovely bathroom with walk in shower.

Great aircon, dishwasher and oven, fridge filled with soft drinks ( kombucha, coke, sprite) and two beers and a bottle white wine and water.

Plus some other snacks and goodies all complimentary.

Lovely pool and spa area, brilliantly equipped gym.

Food at breakfast and on the lovely rooftop bar was excellent.

All The staff are fantastic, friendly, attentive and courteous .

Will recommend to friends and family.

We will be back!

Unfortunately for us the Rebello did not live up to the 5 stars it purports to have.

The location was excellent but it is all about the view over the river – and sadly we didn’t have one and we felt might as well have booked a cupboard.

The staff we met were all delightful.

The website was misleading in terms of rooms, we travelled with friends and both couples were unimpressed with the positioning. These now seem to be split on the website between one bedroom and one bedroom with river view however this was definitely not clear at time of our booking for our 3 night stay - we would have been better in the smaller river studios than the one bed. Our friends were offered an upgrade but only with an additional cost as there was only one available they turned it down – pity really as their original suite had an infinitely better outlook than ours albeit you would have had to stand on a chair to see the river it was much more open! Booking direct definitely didn’t come out better on this occasion as it led to mixed messages.

With 5 stars you expect consistency – little things that do make the difference - attention to detail. The mattress was comfortable but a good night’s sleep was interrupted by the cheap plastic topper making you hot rather than a decent comfortable cotton one that could be easily laundered. The pillows most uncomfortable, overstuffed and lumpy. There were no wine glasses – just tumblers – with which to enjoy the complimentary bottle, the full compliment of towels was missing one night. We returned to our room on our second day to an unmade bed at 4pm - unacceptable. We had water replaced one night but not another, turndown first night only – so the cushions etc were not replaced for nights 2 and 3 when the room was serviced. Not monitoring staff uniforms is inexcusable especially as they are provided and laundered by the hotel. They are shocking and clearly go unchecked for quality and looks and I felt embarrassed for those wearing them. Missing a letter on the ‘hotel’ sign at the front door – noticeable.

I did express my disappointment after the unmade bed was discovered – I should have spoken up earlier I guess but we had a full itinerary planned with friends for the long weekend. We were offered a complimentary meal at pot and pan but we had already booked a table elsewhere at the recommendation of the hotel so declined. On check out we were given a 10% discount on the room but they still charged for a single round of drinks that they could have given as a gesture of good will. I suppose the statement buyer beware comes into it’s own on this occasion.

From the moment i received the individual Rebello map and guide on email before we arrived I knew this was going to be a special hotel. Our two bedroom suite was enormous with beautiful views to the Dom Luis I Bridge, a spacious lounge and impressively stocked fridge and selection of local snacks and drinks (all complimentary). The soft dressing gowns, aircon, nespresso coffee machine and bluetooth speaker made it hard to leave…
The rooftop bar has the best view across to Ribeira, the river Douro and across the beautiful red roofs of the Port cellars and one can just about see the crowds congregating at Jardin Do Morro for the famous sunset. The food at the Rooftop Bello is top notch. Dont be fooled by the description of snacks, the Chicken Caesar salad, pizzas and sensational local ham (presented on a really cute mini washing line) were outstanding. The overriding star quality of this hotel though was the ever helpful team. Every single team member looked so happy to work there and were so helpful at every point, going out of their way to make everything easy from booking restaurants (grilled fish at ContramaréAfurada and sampling Francesinha at Brasão both while watching the stunning sunset over the Atlantic were so special) to port tasting to service at breakfast and evening. Thankyou for such a wonderful mini break Rebello, we wish we were still there. Truly outstanding.

From planning our stay and making a reservation to beyond check out, the team at The Rebello could not have been more helpful, pleasant, and professional. The service and accommodations were above average in every area. The Bello Rooftop bar welcomed us with an amazing view of Porto, Gaia, and the Douro River delicious food and drinks. Breakfast was a highlight with an amazing array of choices and special order egg, pancake, and other dishes, and espresso to get you ready for a day of sightseeing. The Rebello has maps of several recommended sights to help you plan you day and made excellent dinner suggestions.

The rooms had a lovely view of the Douro River where we watched the various boats and cruise ships travel along with amazing views of Porto at night. Magical! They upgraded our room to a two room, two bathroom suite with a kitchenette filled with sweets, savories, wine, coffee, etc. Excellent beds, bedding, storage and amenities.

The Rebello staff really went above and beyond by assisting us with trip planning even AFTER we checked out. They helped us secure a rental car to be picked up at The Rebello after our week tour up the Douro and arranged to be dropped at our hotel in Lisbon. No trip to a rental car at the airport or on outskirts of town. More time for sightseeing Portugal!

Thank you to The Rebello and Miguel for the exceptional service. It was a highlight of our 2 weeks in Portugal!

Since I had read so many wonderful recommendations about this hotel, I had high expectations when we booked. In retrospect my stay turned out to be even better than I had envisioned.

I very much appreciated the feeling of unpretentious luxury with an outstanding attention to detail in the hotel design (and its history) as well as our suite furnishings and amenities. The staff were so helpful, kind, and pleasant! It was delightful to sit on the beautiful, peaceful rooftop terrace both at night and in the daytime. From there and our suite, the views toward the river and the bridges were a special treat just because of the hotel’s unique location. At the same time, I liked that we could be close to the riverfront action and still return to the hotel to observe from afar or enjoy our own personal reserved time in the spa. I would definitely return to this hotel!!!!!

Fantastic hotel and staff! From the minute you park in front of the hotel until you leave (which you do not really want to) you feel welcome and taken really good care of by the fantastic people at The Rebello. We have never been at a hotel where the staff is so smiling, friendly, helpful and serviceminded as here - and when location, river view, room, food, facilities and everything else is great as well, we highly recommend The Rebello as the place to stay when in Gaia/Porto.

My family and I stayed there for 4 nights in March 2024. I had booked a family room (2 beds) with a balcony but upon entering the room we noticed that the views were not the ones we had expected or had seen online (my fault for not enquiring more about it when booking). Rooms with balconies have limited views of the Douro river and Porto. I brought this up and someone from the hotel staff was kind enough to show me 2 other rooms types (without balcony) which had the most amazing views of the Douro river, Porto and Luis bridge. They quickly switched us tone of these rooms with smiles on their faces. Very kind and accommodating. This new room was outstanding. Best views of any room, ever. We spent a lot of time on the window bay beds just watching the view.

The rooms are beautiful and huge but lack a little functionality (light switches operating which lights is a bit confusing and the open shower concept with only a small glass wall left the bathroom floor, garbage can and toilet sprayed no matter how careful we were).

The service fluctuated between great and poor. Our rooftop bar meal saw our waitress disappear halfway through. We called on another waitress who began serving us and then we had a different waiter for a little bit and then our initial waitress returned at the very end. It wasn't awful but we did have to call for most of the things we needed as opposed to them checking on us.

We also had reserved time at the spa pool but the pool had to be maintained (an issue with pool chemical amounts) during our reserved time so we could not go. The hotel tried to contact our room to tell us and left me an email as well. They re-booked us for the next day. When we showed up 10 min early for that booking they erroneously had us in the system at another time. But, they let us in anyway and said they'd ask one of the couples in the pool area to leave since they had already been there for their allotted hour anyway and because otherwise we would not have enough chairs/loungers to accommodate our family. Staff spoke to that couple and then left but that couple never left and so we just made do without seating for everyone and I stayed in the pool the whole time. Again, not a huge issue for us but could be seen as one by some if you look at how much a stay here costs.

The included buffet breakfast is really good and staff there was quite friendly and professional every day.

Overall, the hotel and it's facilities are definitely 5 star but I'd give the service overall about 3.5 stars. If visiting Porto again I'd probably still stay here.

I should mention that the hotel seemed quite empty when we arrived (and had the issues mentioned above) and seemed to get busier as the week progressed. Perhaps they did not have full staff on during that time which might have accounted for some issues.

Hi how long is the walk to Porto centre and are there many bars and restaurants locally? Thank you
Answer from David J
1 contribution
Hi, we are fit (ish) and walk often. It took us about 20 minutes to get to the bridge - could be done in 15 mins but crowds and activities meant we took our time. Crossing the bridge is again a crowd management activity as much as a walk - took only 5 minutes to cross. You are then on the main river-front tourist strip, which we tended to avoid. We either walked up the 200+ steep steps to get to Porto center or through the river-front throng and then up towards 'town', which offered less steps but was still a 'climb'. Depends exactly where you want to go. But about 40 minutes walk is a good planning number - certainly not more than that. If walking is not your thing, we found the various ride shares and taxis to be affordable and reliable. The main strip on the Gaia side of the river from Rebello to the bridge has lots of bar and eating options - perhaps as much as the opposite bank of the river? Again, it is touristy but fun nonetheless.
