Clean, fairly large room, gluten-free bread available on request for breakfast. However located directly on the main street to downtown Funchal; rooms face the other side but the street is awfully noisy

We deliberately chose to come to this enormous hotel out of season. February and not half term... great plan! No idea what this place is like when busy but it felt about 10% capacity during our visit and it was absolutely divine. Almost surreal in fact – as we were kicking about with loads of sun lounger space free both around the heated pool near reception and outdoors in the gardens. The staff were initially a bit frosty – presumably they're used to some seriously rude clientele – but when given the respect they deserved they blossomed. Happy hour twice a day at the pool bar was a great idea, with two cocktails for six euros a total bargain. The heated pool was a fun L shape with plenty of room for a splash about. Rooms were kept clean and the cleaners were discreet and kept to instructions one left outside as to whether you wanted them to come in each day or not etc. We didn't try the restaurant but breakfasts were adequate, depending on your expectation level. The gardens were extensive (the hotel is vast, spread over five blocks) and absolutely gorgeous. Can't imagine how they look in the height of summer but for February this was a real treat. One old tree that had been cut down (see pics) had been made a centrepiece for a bunch of potted plants and so on, deftly inserted in between its roots. It would be a lovely setting for a spot of sundown yoga or meditation. Thank you, Dom Pedro Garajau for a truly idyllic break where time truly stopped still!

Stayed at this hotel bit over a week ago. Great service, room was cleaned daily. Even received a lovely surprise on the day of my mum's birthday! Could have a better choice of food for breakfast. Would stay again.

Excellent value for money. Rooms were cleaned daily. The whole hotel was spotlessly clean. Breakfast was basic but plenty of it. Special shout out to the reception team, especially Paulina who was very helpful and always greets you with a smile.

How to get from airport to hotel. How much is a taxi or is there a shuttle
I've got travel agency transfer, but I am pretty sure that you can get public transport to Funchal and from Funchal there is direct bus to Garajau (ca. 15 min ride). Ask tourist information at the airport.

How far is a beach from this hotel?
There is a beach, down a steep hill, you get almost half way down and there is a replica statue of Christ, (like Brazils) with a viewing platform. Then cablecar to beach - no sand.
