After a week in a resort we went to Chez Jacques. The stay at this guesthouse was fenomonal: delicious food, spacious rooms and a lovely atmosphere. This is the real Mauritius! (with an Italian twist) Thanks Ivan!

I am a Mauritian living abroad and during my last trip back, I wanted to stay a few days on the west coast of Mauritius. After reading positive reviews of Chez Jacques on TripAdvisor, I decided to give it a go.

The place is a converted two-storey house. I believe they have a total of eight rooms and it seems they all have their own private balconies. Our room had a little balcony with a nice hammock,

The ground floor balcony serves as a restaurant with square tables which can be moved depending on the layout required. There is also an open area with hammocks in the small garden. I saw a barby in a corner so I am guessing they have barbies sometimes.

The main kitchen has a fridge which is replenished with beer and other soft drinks that guests can purchase. There are also two empty fridges on the balcony which the guests can use to store their personal items, for free.

The place provides breakfasts, as part of the package and dinners at an additional cost of about 15 Euros per person.

The good:
- The people who run the place are great! They are extremely nice, helpful and loads of fun. We spent one of the nights having dinner there and ended up drinking with the folks who work there until very late. It was a fun night.
- The place is a 2 minute walk away from the main Tamarin beach, which is usually popular for surfing. The sea there is home to dolphins and you can swim with them by engaging one of the many operators there. Chez Jacques helped us do that.
- The local food that we had for dinner at Chez Jacques was traditional. Not the best you'll have in Mauritius but something cooked by a Mauritian.

The less good:
- 56 Euros for a room a night feels expensive for what you get. 15 Euros for a dinner per person is definitely expensive. I would skip it and head out. In fact, apparently there is a little place where you can eat not far from Chez Jacques. The folks who work there are great so they will certainly guide you there.
- September is a cold month and one would hope to get hot showers. That was not the case. it seems their shower heating system is solar but what's lacking is a good electric fallback when there's no sun. So early morning and night the water is freezing. You can only get warm water late morning to early evening.
- The WiFi connection was horrible.

All things considered, it was a good stay at Chez Jacques, thanks mostly to the awesome folks who run the place.

Chez Jacques is a beautiful guest house, very simple, clean and quiet, with a relaxing and cozy atmosphere. We experienced delicious dinners by Ivan. Tamarin is a great starting point for your visits along the island. Highly recommended!

I was wondering if I should write this review in the worry that Chez Jacques might get so busy and not have an opening the next time we come!
Nearly missed our stay because of travel documents (and cancelling was not an option!) - bus so glad all worked out. We had the most fantastic stay here! I must mention the incredible service of Ivan - who had to carry our two very large and heavy (full of gifts for friends we were meeting up with) up the stairs. But he did it all with a charming smile!
We were two, but opted to book the 3 sleeper on the first floor just to have that bit of extra space. Great choice. Lovely little veranda with a hammock and a view over the beautiful trees - felt like we were in a tropical jungle. Also the aircon in the room was a life saver.
Breakfast was good - enough to get you going. But I have to mention dinner. Ivan cooks now and again and if you are there - stay for dinner. This was the best food we had during our whole trip in Mauritius. Outstanding fish carpaccio, soft chicken kebab with curry sauce and the most decadent chocolate brownie with ice-cream. And then not to mention the good company around the table. We had dinner with someone from Belgium, Holland and France. Of course the great entertainment was the fact that they could understand our Afrikaans.
The guys will also help with bookings for trips. We booked the dolphin trip - which was extremely touristy (as one would expect), but we definitely had the best skipper who knew exactly where to find the dolphins.
Then there is the location - the beach is about 1 minute walk straight down the street. Fantastic beach and great for surfing.
Great cafe just up the street - try the local maize cake.
We had a great time at Chez Jacques - fantastic memories and will definitely be back!

What a nice place with very friendly, warm and helpfull people.
They organise trips to the dolphins (not crowded with other boats and not very far).
The beach is beautiful and quiet.
Dinner (3 courses) at Chez Jacques is delicious and copious.
A great place to meet other travelers. We have enjoyed our stay very much.

This is definitely not the 5 star beach resort experience! This is better! The italian owner is a fantastic host and even a better cook! You can rent surf gear or if you're lucky you can even go on a trip with him. The rooms are very basic but nice furnished.Chez Jacques is situated right next to some of the best breaks and kitespots on the island. From hardcore backpackers to families. Everybody is welcome!

I almost never extend my stay or stay in one place for a week but did both here. Great place to relax within a local village rather than a resort. You can also swim in the surf from the beach here instead of within the reef. Ivan is a great host and cooks tasty food for dinner if you eat in and you can get real coffee at breakfast.

We stayed here for just 2 days but could of stayed for a long time! The rooms were nice! The upper rooms had a beautiful terrace and chill spot. The owners and all the locals that hang out there are super chill! We had an incredible group dinner there which was exquisite! The entire vibe here is a place you just want to be! You are a shorty walk to the sunsets on the beach and the waves if they are there. We booked a whale tour through the hostel and saw sperm whales so close! We also went dolphin swimming which was a treat!

The people and the vibe set this apart from any where else! The breakfast and group dinners do too!

One of my favorite places in tamarin !

Can’t wait to come back!!!

Spent 2 weeks here and it was the most pleasant stay- the staff makes the place a home. Thanks again for kindness, good advices, food and friendly smiles to Ivan, Gerard, Jean Marie, Tina and Hans, as we missed the time to say goodbye and thanks to most of you.
Plain and simple house, very clean, just a few metres from the beach with the loveliest sunsets.
Two restaurants nearby (chinese - tasty; italian - nice and busy: book a table!), food on the beach or street in foodtrucks - a must do if you want nice and cheap. And try dinner in the house! Ivan and/or Jean Marie cooking - lovely food and nice company with staff and guests. Got best tips there (Thank Jutta & Volcan for the hike Le Pouce)
Kitchen is open, space in a fridge. Drinks available in the kitchen for payment later.
Breakfast: fruit salad, toast, jam, cheese and eggs by choice.
Someone in another review complained about the towels not being changed: just ask and it is done.
There is always someone at the place, so don't worry about savety: our door wasn't locked a couple of times and it was never a problem. Windows are not all like windows that we know. So don't expect windows to be shut.
The street is busy and lively a hotel around the corner with live music (mainly Jazz) in the evenings, a building site in the near. During the week work starts at around 8 am, evenings get quiet around 11 pm, We never bothered: we liked the music and we got up at around 8 anyways.
Dive and surf center around the corner.
