We just returned from another stay at Refuge Inn, celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary. The rooms are wonderful, the staff is amazing, and the location is ideal. Always several ponies in the corral, looking for a handout, which is available at the bike shop on-site. Over 25 years we stayed at a number of hotels there, but once we found this one, we'll never stay anywhere else!

Very nice small hotel with clean rooms and friendly staff. Unique with a decent breakfast (brought to the room now as part of their Covid protocol). The pool area is nice with potted plants to create a little oasis. Hot tub is small, but a nice option. The location is perfect - right next to bike rentals, so no driving necessary to rent bikes. Also, close to the Wildlife Refuge. Love it here and will be back!

We stayed for only 2 nights but we all wanted to extend our stay. The staff is very warm, friendly and very professional. The hotel is located close to the wildlife refuge, restaurants and a new water park all within walking distance. You could also rent a bike next door. The hotel owns horses that you can feed with corn for .25 cents per portion. The pool was open along with the hot tub. Breakfast options dropped off at your door includes, cereal, milk, juice, egg cheese and bacon croissant and yogurt. The hotel is small and clean you’ll feel right at home.

The staff was very friendly! Gift shop was cute! Loved being near the horses for my little ones. Was also nice that breakfast was included and accommodating by bringing to your room at your time request. Will be back again for sure!

We were very disappointed in our recent visit to the Refuge Inn. The photos on the motel website show beautiful views of the lighthouse and marsh, or pines. In reality, your room is either facing the pool (including the pool pump house and some discarded piles of lumber) with a few pine trees, or the parking lot with a small muddy horse pen beyond (and a good view of McDonald's beyond that). So either way, you get noise--either from people in the pool and hot tub or from the parking lot. BTW, you can also access the horse pen from McDonald's parking lot. It is nearly impossible to see the lighthouse from the motel which is another thing that was shown on the website. When we first entered the building, there was a strong smell of old wood and wet carpet. Our room smelled the same way. The room was VERY VERY clean, though, for which I am thankful. More than once we had to close our balcony door and couldn't enjoy being outside because of neighbors smoking (and it is supposed to be a non smoking facility). There was a crack in the headboard of my bed, and one of the chairs on the balcony was broken so only one of us could sit out there at once. The pool was beautiful and well kept. We were very disappointed in the breakfast, which was brought to us in a brown bag. There were few choices that were not carbs. So while the room was so so, I think we'll find someplace else to stay next time. Definitely not worth the price we paid.

Hello, I'm so glad you reached out here on Tripadvisor as I got your comment card with many of the same comments but it had no room number or date listed, so I couldn't follow up on any of the issues you encountered. Could you please e-mail me at marketing@refugeinn.com with your room number so we can handle the maintenance issues? A broken chair and cracked headboard are not up to our standards and we'd like to have those fixed ASAP. A smoking neighbor is something else we would like to have handled while you were here, as we take the non-smoking policy very seriously. When a guest alerts us of someone smoking near the building, we can identify the smoker and remind them of the non-smoking policy they agreed to at check-in-- and, if necessary, enforce the penalty fee for each instance of non-compliance. Unfortunately we can't correct these issues if they aren't brought to our attention. As far as the view, there are photos on the website taken from our rooms, marsh observation platform, 3rd floor observation deck, the office, the pool, and around Chincoteague and Assateague Islands. None of the photos are altered beyond basic lighting, cropping, etc. I took a look to be sure I hadn't placed a photo in a misleading spot, like on the "Rooms" page, but they all look good to me. In any case, just to clarify, you cannot see the lighthouse from any of the rooms. You can only see the flash at night-time. There is a GREAT view of the lighthouse from the Marsh Observation Platform, which might be the photo you saw. I'm so sorry that you got the wrong impression from that shot. You may not have noticed that the hotel has two "sections" -- one building closer to the office, and another building past the pool. They are connected via breezeways. The first building near the office houses our Deluxe Rooms, which are slightly more expensive than our standard rooms. The pine tree side, particularly upstairs, in that section is the quietest location in the hotel. It seems like you must have booked a standard room, given the view of the pool. We're happy to accommodate requests for specific locations whenever possible. I'd also like to note that 2021 has been our busiest year on record by a long shot. It's been getting harder and harder for us to accommodate special requests as the calendar is solid full. We're typically not full to the brim during the week in the Spring or early Summer, but we've been pretty much at capacity since Easter this year, when restrictions began lifting across the country. When the hotel is full, just like any hotel in a family vacation destination, there's going to be some noise outside and in the common areas, and I mention that because I think it's important for future guests to understand that as well. As far as breakfast is concerned, the current offerings include your choice of apple juice orange juice, yogurt, fresh fruit, cinnamon toast crunch, cheerios, milk, a fresh baked good, and a bacon egg & cheese croissant. Feeding almost 300 people in two hours is quite the feat, and normally our breakfast crew runs a tight ship. I did want to note that if you stayed here last week (I think you may have, given when I got the comment card) breakfast was really struggling. One of our key players was coping with a back injury, and it made for a rough time for everyone. I think we've ironed out the wrinkles in case we're down a staff member in the future, but that was our first time with the breakfast delivery, without our "A Team" and it was simply not up to par. I sincerely apologize if you were affected by those staffing hiccups. All of us here at the Refuge are sorry your expectations weren't met, and we wish you smooth seas and good luck in your future travels.
