Arrived to the hotel from Reus airport 20 mins away at 10.30. Check in was a little lengthy ( there were 8 of us in 3 rooms) Wristbands on we headed to the luggage room above the arcade where we stored our luggage safely in lockers for 2 euros
We were then able to use all the facilities while we waited for our room to be ready
We headed to the snack bar for something to eat and a drink . You can have a late breakfast here and lunch . Nightimes it serves as an Al fresco restaurant serving steaks mixed grills fish dishes etc. We found the food here lovely
Room was ready at 1pm, very bright clean and modern and enough room for our 3. 2 single beds pushed together and a sofa bed.
Our other family had a larger family room with a double bed and bunk beds that looked great too.
Cleaners came every day made beds cleaned bathroom and left clean towels. Clean sheets on day 3.
2 main pools we used the one at the back where you could use balls and inflatables . The kids loved it and it was very clean. Never struggled to get a sunbed there are lots!
They do give you an allocated time slot to enter restaurant a great idea to avoid congestion. I believe you can change if it doesn't suit but a couple of times we were late and they really didn't mind.
Breakfast is everything you can think of!
Never had lunch here but evenings were a great choice too . Even the fussiest would find something.
Staff work hard here clearing your table as you finish with your plates and Never rushed.
A bar inside upstairs and an outside bar near the entertainment. Night times 4 staff work efficiently and the queue is shortlived. Good choice of drinks. You can pay 10 euros a day for the branded drinks if you wish but we found the local spirits very nice.
Did feel a bit sorry for the lovely man in the mornings on his own serving the after breakfast coffees!
Entertainment starts with a kids games/disco around 915 and then a show/quiz/magician.
There is an arcade behind the Entertainment all the machines are around 1 euro each and there are 2 bowling lanes for 2 euros per person.
There is a teen club although we never used and there is a little hut by the inflatable pool for the younger ones to draw/play games. The young girl in there was very good.
We found all the staff very friendly and very good and patient with the children
Come out the hotel to the right walk to the end by the cage bar and the bus stop to portaventura is there 2.05 euros per person
Overall this is a lovely hotel you can see room for improvement outside by the pools but thus did not have any impact on our holiday.
Thankyou Hotel Calypso and all your staff for a great family holiday!

Pretty average hotel, stayed two weeks all inclusive. More negatives than positives though.

Positives:

Al fresco food is really nice
Pools cleaned every day early hours in the morning
The cleaners were thorough cleaning the hotel lobby
Reception staff very friendly
Plenty of pools to choose from
Plenty to do for kids

Negatives:

Entertainment was shocking, I remember one day they were playing water polo and the entertainment team weren't paying attention, too busy talking to lifeguard not keeping score with the guests. At the end of the game the players definitely didn't look entertained
They ran out of coconut rum so cocktails were very limited
All inclusive finished at 11 which was weird
Given allocated time slots for our meals
Bed bugs and covered in bites
One of the entertainment staff went to the toilet and he never washed his hands, let's just say he was in the toilet for a long time as well
Cutlery and cups were filthy
Plates and bowls chipped
My husband found a drug needle in the pool area, not good when there's kids running around
Tables dont get cleaned in the bar area enough, one table still had rim marks on from us using it night before
It was really nice to get away with not having a holiday abroad for some time but sadly I won't return back here

Dear guests, Thank you for choosing to stay with us at the Calypso. We are disappointed that we did not meet with all of your expectations but we are glad that you were very happy with kids entertainment, friendly staff and cleaning service. Your comments are forwarded to the hotel´s manager, he is always available to speak with guests if they experience any problems or are dissapointed with services they are provided. We wish you had contacted him during your stay, especially regarding such things as bed bugs which we need to deal with with emergency. We do hope that this will not deter you from returning in the future and that we can try and change some of your opinions. Kind regards, Loyalty & Community manager, MedPlaya

I cannot understand how anyone can say this hotel is awful .i have just returned with family and grandchildren .we have all had the best time.
Rooms were cleaned everyday with fresh towels and they were modern and brightly decorated they were ok size wise.we had 2 rooms both to accomodate 2 adults and a child and we managed ok with the space as we just put the sofa bed back up during the day .
We were all inclusive and never once did we not like the food .breakfast had cereals yoghurt all different types of cakes and pastrys as well as full english .
Lunch we ate on the outside terrace area and had salad, jacket potato, burgers hotdogs fruit and icecream which was all adequate for what we needed .we ate in dining room at lunchtime on a couple of days and the food in there is also very good .evening meal was again lovely and the children loved the mr whippy type icecream machine which they could serve themselves and enjoyed putting different toppings of sauces and sprinkles on top .the chocolate fountain was also a lovely treat for them as well .
Drinks were served for you and the queues were not to bad as there was always 4 serving at night and daytime they were very quick .there is a variety of cocktails as well as san miguel beer spirits and rose white and red wine as well as sangria .
Staff were all very friendly and even some that couldnt speak the best english were always very pleasant to us all .
Never had a problem with getting a sunbed we would sit at the rear pool as it was where all the games happened in the day .pool opened at 10am and beds were unchained then and we also had an umbrella everyday .we didnt see much evening entertainment but people said it was enjoyable .finally im just giving 1 negative about the hotel and that is there is not enough lifts .we were 4th floor and rely on it when you have a pushchair but they were very busy and slow .Apart from that i would like to say thankyou to all the staff at hotel calypso for making our stay with you a very enjoyable one and we will hopefully be back soon

My wife & and I had a brilliant 14-night holiday in the charming and spotlessly clean Med Playa Hotel Calypso in Salou from the 8th to the 22nd of October 2023. When we arrived, we were greeted by a very pleasant and polite receptionist named Maria. The other three amazing reception staff who also looked after us exceptionally well during our stay were Brenda, Mataous and Rebecca. Their spectacular goodwill was outstanding. It was amazingly good to meet and chat with David (the General Manager) and our thanks go to Meryem Amine (the Assistant Manager) for all her help and kind-heartedness.

Our room was overlooking the pool and this was cleaned every day by very friendly chambermaids. We were staying in the Hotel Calypso on a half-board basis and the fantastic restaurant manager named Samba has a great personality and always greeted us with a smile. In actual fact, all the restaurant and bar staff were superb and very thoughtful and in particular we enjoyed the humour and courtesy of Eva, Rosa Rosario and Rafa during our meal times.

Mike Dear (Aberdeen).

We stayed here for 10 nights and wished we’d stayed elsewhere. The room itself was alright. Was cleaned on a daily basis, towels were changed everyday. One day I noticed one of the fresh towels had a stain on them and on a few occasions, the bed sheets had stains on them. The first day the room got cleaned, a bag full of rubbish, which wasn’t ours, was left in the bathroom for about 4 days in a row.

The food was abysmal, only one row of that of food and one side was the exact same as the other and a tiny section for the desserts. If the food needs replenishing, they take about 10 minutes to do so. On a few occasions, we had raw chicken and sausage from both the fry station and the main section. The snack bar on the terrace is out in the open, so there were a few occasions that flies and birds would try and eat off the plate, which isn’t very hygienic. Most of the time, we’d either not eat or go out and find somewhere. Some plates had chips and cracks on it and one of the wine glasses in the table we sat on had chips n cracks on it. The fizzy drinks were flat most of the time and doesn’t taste like Pepsi or Pepsi Max. It tastes like a cheap version. You are given a piece of paper with time slots to go for your meals which is a bit of a faff on.

Whilst we stayed here about 80 Spanish school kids turned up and the pool was basically out of bounds. It was impossible to get any food when they came into the dining area as they would just push in making it impossible to get some food so we were left with the left overs. Maybe some pre warning would’ve been nice about the kids coming as people have spent a lot of money to enjoy an all inclusive holiday and for it to be ruined by Spanish kids isn’t on.

The all inclusive is only between 9am and 11pm which we only found out about on the night time. We’ve never been to an all inclusive hotel where there has been a curfew. Afterwards you have to pay for any drinks. Again this should’ve been advertised. The entertainment is terrible as well. Same things on everyday

The pool isn’t cleaned. We went in and there was leaves, dead flies and even chocolate wrappers just floating in the pool which isn’t very hygienic. The lifeguards disappear half of the time and do nothing. Kids running around the pool, diving into the pool when there’s a sign saying your not allowed and they just sit there and do nothing.

Fair to say we won’t be returning. Avoid.

Dear guest, We are very sad to hear that Hotel Calypso did not meet with your expecations. It is never our intention for anyone to be unhappy during their holidays and we appreciate all of your comments and feedback. We are sorry that the food was not to your tastes, the chefs try hard to prepare a range of menus and dishes to suit all tastes but we know that we will never please everybody all of the time. We do advertise that the hotel sometimes caters for groups not only Spanish school kids, but also British, Irish and French. It is also advertised our times of All inclusive finishing at 23.00. We are sorry for any misunderstanding. Again, we are very sorry for any inconvenience. Your comments have been forwarded to the hotel's manager. Hopefully even though the hotel was not to your liking we do hope that you enjoyed your time in Salou. Kind regards, MedPlaya Hotels

Having arrived in Spain during a heatwave the hotel looked clean and better than expected. We queued up to check in for half an hour and then were told rooms weren’t ready till 2:30pm so we went to get some lunch and were told cases not allowed. We were told to pay to put them in storage for an hour so decided to just get a drink and wait for rooms. When we finally got to rooms they were clean and ok. Had to pay for the safe, no English tv channels apart from euro news, one small wardrobe door for a triple wardrobe. Had to ask for soap in dispenser in bathroom and towels to be replaced on a couple of occasions. Air con worked well when all doors shut, not very sound proof but the 42 degree heat in the shade wore us out!! Pools are busy and not a lot of shade and one pool was very dirty looking (the water was emptied and replaced during the first few days) Food and entertainment was repeated each week and a lift was out of service for 8 days of trip so had to carry down suitcases as reception told me no one can help!! The remaining lift was always rammed. A lady called Rosario in the restaurant was lovely. A chef cooking hot food was extremely miserable and rude but overall the staff were pleasant. Hats off to the bar staff too they work very hard. The company with us (8 in all) helped make the holiday. The small cove about a 15/20 min walk was beautiful. Also Salou was a short walk away. PortAventura parks were nearby but very busy with a 4 hour line for some rides. With the heat we left early. Caribe water park was good but very busy. Food was edible and a couple of themed nights had better food. We all decided the hotel should only be a 3 star not a 4 star. The hotel over the road looked much better.
After reading so many negative reviews we were all happy with rooms and company. We felt a few tweaks would make the hotel experience a better one.

Dear guests, Thank you for your feedback regarding the popular Hotel Calypso following your recent holiday. It's encouraging to read that you were happy with the cleanliness of the hotel as well as with the friendliness of the bar staff. We apologize for any inconvenience regarding one of the 4 lifts being broken during your stay. Unfortunately, it happned on the weekend and the piece we requiered to get it repaired had arrived later than expected. We always try to offer earlier check in for free whenever it is possible, if guests have to wait, they can confortably store their luggage in the luggage for 2€ per big locker and start enjoying their all inclusive package and facilities of the hotel. We appreciate you taking the time to leave your review and we hope to get the opportunity to welcome you back to the Calypso on future occasions. Went for the last week of August with my partner and two children.
I will start with the positives the hotel is generally clean and had recently been modernized.
I found most of the staff very friendly and accommodating especially the pool bar staff who work tirelessly and are very polite.
The food is of a good standard and there was always something to eat as we were AI it was a plus.
Now Negatives
You are given an alloted time slot for meal times we were given 8am breakfast time slot not everybody wants to get up that early and eat all Spanish guests given 10am etc, also this system does not work as Spanish guests will sit for 2-3hrs eating a meal which is fine in a private restaurant not in this system so was very crowded in dining hall and chaotic at times.
First hotel I have been in were people would reserve sunbeds with there towel at 8am disappear for hours at a time so nobody else can use these beds I don't think we would have been allowed been English but different rules for there own.
Unruly children everywhere around pool parents not bothering with them neither were lifeguards.
The entertainment again is focused on Spanish clientel (terrible) each to there own!!
Our room was 565 in building 2 building nice our balcony huge which was good but room stank of damp which was coming from Aircon unit as u could see mould around vents which is surprising as Aircon did not work very well.
Also have never been to a hotel were the lifeguards enter dining room pick and then eat when guests do sat at pool bar eating his dinner??
And when going in snack bar placed in dining room staff sat eating dinner absolutely fine but drinking lager with it must be a good company to work for if u provide free alocohol.
Would highly recommend this hotel if your Spanish if not???
Was the pool closed at 1pm?

Hello Jimmyslater, Thank you for choosing to stay with us at the Calypso and for taking the time to review your stay in such a different summer. Hotel Calypso as well as our town Salou are very popular international destinations. But this year it is true that we had mostly national guests, although we strive to provide the best service to fit all our guests. We are sad to learn that there were some aspects of your stay which did not meet your expectations but we do hope you enjoyed your time here in Salou. Due to Covid-19 very strict health and safety protocols have been put in to place to ensure the safety of our guests and staff, therefore our guests might experience a difference in how things are executed and find it different from before. We hope to get the opportunity to welcome you back to our MedPlaya Hotels on future occasions. Kind regards, MedPlaya Hotel Calypso.

Stayed here for two weeks all inclusive. Travelled from Ireland 2 adults and 2 children age 15 and 8 (bare in mind the 15 year old was classed and paid for as an adult) rooms absolutely tiny! Couldn’t swing a cat in it. Defo not a room suitable for 3 adults and 1 child. 2 singles and bunk beds. No room to change etc. storage space was terrible too! I complained upon arrival about the room and the girl behind the desk said she understood and explained the room we had was for 2 adults and 2 small children and not for 3 adults and 1 child. They kept telling me to come back tomorrow. This went on for 4 days and I eventually gave up. They didn’t care and they all barely spoke English. They wanted an extra 600 euro for a bigger room. Before I arrived I asked for pictures of the room I had book on multiple occasions and they had none to show as stated in emails from them! I honestly didn’t expect a room so small. Rooms aren’t clean at all. Manky dirty, filthy floors and dust everywhere! I had to strip my beds each time so they’d be changed otherwise they wouldn’t be touched. I even went back to the room on occasions and room wasn’t made up. They’d have to send someone up that evening to sort it. Cleaning isn’t to a high standard in the whole complex never mind the rooms. Pools weren’t cleaned once in the two weeks we were there and neither were the grounds. Spillages everywhere and the shores stunk the whole place out of it. Food was terrible! Catered for the Spanish and not Irish or English, although there were plenty of English and Irish there. One good night which was American and that’s about it! Lunch was always terrible as was the snack bar food and dinner, so we still spent a fortune eating out! I’ve so much more I could say, but I’ll leave it there. Definitely would NOT return even if you paid me! Nowhere near a 4* hotel! I’ve stayed in better 3* hotels. I can’t wait to get home!

Hello Sophie M, We are very sad to hear that on this occasion the Hotel Calypso has not met with your expecations. It is never our intention for anyone to be unhappy during their holidays and we appreciate all of your comments and feedback. Hotel Calypso is one of most popular family hotel in Salou offering many types of rooms for all tastes and offering best quality for the price. It does surprise us that you have not been shown photoes of room type you booked, you can find them on our web page and even on our instagram account there are not only photoes but also reels of the room. Most of our staff speaks English fluently, we are sorry for any misunderstanding. The pools are cleaned every day by our maintenance staff and checks are done to the water quality. The hotel is also supervised every month by an external safety company Preverisk as safety of both our guests and staff are very important to us as a company. We hope that although you will not come back to stay with us, you will come back to Salou on future ocassions! Kind regards, Loyalty & Community manager, MedPlaya

We arrived on the 30th July 2 adults and a 5yr old. Reception staff were very rude and sat in the phone while checking people in.

The room Itself was tiny with stained bed sheets no coffee making facilities and the bathroom falling apart.

The breakfasts were good with plenty of choice however there was no organisation to any of it it was like a cattle market in there. Dinner was another matter my partner got the beef stew went to take a bite and he almost ate what can only be described as a full artery needless to say it out us off the evening food and we ended up eating out every night.

The kids entertainment is shocking they basically sing the same songs every single night in Spanish my 5 yr old couldn’t join in because he can’t speak Spanish and also the person on stage would only speak to the Spanish children so a lot of the English or or nationality kids would be left out. There really isn’t much for the kids to do apart from swim.

A select few of the bar staff were great but some others just did not want to be there and kept huffing and puffing at customers when being served.

Location is really good about a 5 min walk to the main strip and 10 mins to the beach and some really good restaurants nearby which I would recommend over doing all inclusive.

And lastly if you want the hotel to order you a taxi anywhere think again !!!!!!! They just tell you they are full and have no taxis in salou we had to wait 55 mins for a taxi to get to the caribe water park. Trying to get a taxi in salou is nigh on impossible.

Arrived here as a family of 4 on 12th AUGUST 2022 (All inclusive). Reading the reviews on the hotel before we arrived was a mixed bag really, but we only take these as a guide anyway as we prefer to make our own judgements.
The main sticking point with this hotel and what seems to be a common theme with most of the reviews of this hotel is the pool area, lose pieces of concrete, smell of sewerage, presumably from the pool filters, pool area was not washed down in the evening, there was even plasters stuck on the floor and in some places, quite a bit of debris at the bottom of the pool.
The hotel itself had been modernised and so were the rooms, towels were changed daily and the room was cleaned everyday. The aircon in our room could have been a bit colder but it was acceptable.
The sunbeds get locked up at the end of the day and don't get unlocked until 10:00am the next day which is not an issue, there are also plenty of sunbeds available, even late on in the afternoon.
Entertainment in the afternoon and evenings was not brilliant but it was ok, the outdoor bar area was clean and the drinks were spot on, bit of a queue at times but it went down quickly.
The food was ok and hot, but not much variety for the 7 days we stayed there and you also had a set time you could go down and eat, but you could change the time if it did not suit. The staff in the restaurant work hard and keep the place lovely and clean ready for the next set of diners.
Overall, we had a good time and the hotel met our needs and it was a nice break away. I am lead to believe that the pool area is the last area to be refurbished and when this is done, it should be a better overall experience.
We would not come back to this hotel again, but this is not because of the hotel, it is because we like to experience different hotels.
