Detailed Reviews
Plagne Soleil, La Plagne.
I was very apprehensive when the coach started to near Plagne Soleil, like I always get when I start to think about the accommodation and the horrible things that can go wrong, especially in cold snowy places - I’ve been to Poland!
My initial reaction was that the location was great - not at all heavily built-up, a nice square with children building an igloo in the centre and sledging down an embankment (I planned to join them later…), some small shops (including a grocery store of the ‘par variety), a few bars/restaurants and the accommodation. Perfect.
I had felt a little worried when the rep on the coach said rather dramatically: well, for those of you staying in Plagne Soleil, this is it. Everything is in this square. But it turned out that everything you need is in that square…and for anything else, Plagne Centre is about 5 minutes away on the 3 bubble-lifts across the piste.
I will break the rest of my review down for ease of reading (like I always do…).
Mont Soleil Apartments (also known as Pierre & Vacances Residence Le Mont Soleil)
Accommodation - Checking- in...
The desk staff were extremely lovely and the reception area was clean and stylish – which was irrelevant really with the apartments being self-catering…but it always helps!
So, we head up to our apartment in one of the lifts - there is more than one, which is great because of the amount of baggage accumulated for snow-sport holidays, and the fact that if you have travelled with a large tour operator, you will have a number of people all heading to their rooms at the same time after checking in.
The Apartment (sleeps 2-7).
Firstly, I was relieved to find that it was already heated to exactly the right temperature (which is important when you’ve just dragged your luggage through the snow from the coach), and my first impression was that it was clean, simple and in the perfect location!
The lounge area – is open-plan style with the dining table and kitchen, and is a relatively decent size. It is furnished adequately with 2 large sofas (one is a sofa bed), and a couple of coffee tables.
The Dining Area – is quite poor really if you plan to have proper table dining experiences. There is not really enough room for a dining table of that size in the alcove style space they’ve given it. Once everyone was seated, only the end 2 people would be able to move freely. But, it is usable and well made from a farm-style sturdy warm pine.
The Kitchen Area – is compact but contains everything you might need…with the exception of a kettle (I don’t know what it is that the French have against them, but it’s travel kettle or pan!).
There is a grill/oven, coffee maker, dishwasher, pots and pans and all the dishes etc you would need for 7. Also, the dishwasher is really quite silent so it is possible to put it on overnight and still be able to sleep!
Master Bedroom – is an adequate size, contains a cupboard/dresser and wardrobe (shelves not rails), and a double bed (which I personally found to be a little small but then I am quite tall and my boyfriend is 6’3”…).
Bunk bed Room – is big enough for the bunk bed and a bit of movement, but isn’t huge. There is a tall cupboard for clothes (shelves again) but not much room for anything else alongside the beds. If it were to be used by children there would be more than enough room for them, adults would be a bit more squeezed, but then you’re asleep so does it really matter?!
Bathroom(s) – The main bathroom contains a reasonably large sink unit with mirror and a bath with shower, directly across the hall is the bathroom with the toilet and another large sink unit (with mirror). I like having a separate toilet/wash room in apartments made for many people, makes everything so much easier when someone wants a bath to ease the first day muscles!
Balcony – The doors open out from the lounge area onto a large balcony with chairs and stunning views of Plagne Soleil! You can also see across to the Plagne Villages and down to Plagne Centre.
Accommodation Summary.
Overall I found the apartment (and its contents) to be everything we might have needed for the week’s self-catering.
Apparently the apartment we had was for 2 – 7 people but I would imagine that fitting 7 people in it would be a bit of a challenge personally, 4 –6 no problem! Any more and you would all have to get on really well with one another or it could get nasty! ha ha ha!
The staff are extremely helpful and polite, and speak excellent English. The best thing about the Mont Soleil for me however had to be it’s prime location!
I would also like to mention that within 2 minutes of the apartments there is a bar/pub style restaurant called Monica’s, and it’s great! (and no, you can’t hear any noise from the square from the apartments of an evening).
I cannot recommend this place enough…the staff are friendly and helpful but not smothering, the service is prompt and efficient and the food is excellent! It is gorgeous food at decent prices for a resort restaurant; there is quite a selection of food available as well (for people like me who don’t eat red meat…France can be a nightmare!), and the deserts…it’s just beautiful!
If you go to Plagne Soleil (or the Plagne Villages/Plagne Centre for that matter), whether or not you stay at the Mont Soleil Apartments, I would highly recommend visiting Monica’s one evening!
Plagne Soleil Summary.
Plagne Soleil is by far one of the prettiest villages/areas of La Plagne; it gets the sun for the majority of the day, and has the best views of the surrounding area. There is also immediate access to a number of the lifts and you can ski in and out of pretty much everywhere.
Because Plagne Soleil is one of the least built up areas of La Plagne, there are only a few places to stay – the Mont Soleil Apartments, Plagne Soleil Apartments (above Monica’s) and the chalet’s on the other side of the square.
A Note on Lyon Airport.
I feel like I must make comment on the state on Lyon airport. Yes, our suitcases came through relatively quickly given the volume of people on the plane; however getting the snowblades and board-bag was another story.
The system of reuniting people with their skis at Lyon is a total farce. Basically, you go to one carousel and collect your suitcases and boot-bags, then you have to go to the mosh-pit like queue for your skis.
What they do is have a very large box between the carousels and they simply take all the boards & skis off the plane (and any other flights that happen to have landed) and throw them into it.
You have to fight your way to the front and then crawl through the mass of equipment in the vain hope that yours is there…all the while, the staff are throwing more and more into the pile.
It was absolutely ridiculous, and surprised me seeing as Lyon (as with Grenoble) is one of the major airports for people going on snow holidays every single winter. It was like it came as a total surprise to them that they should receive all this oversize luggage, and yet this happens every single season, you’d have thought they would have devised a better system by now.
At Manchester, we have decent sized carousels that they can put people’s skis and boards onto as well; they send the suitcases through first, then everything else. Simple.
But this was the only joy about coming home from Plagne Soleil, I loved it there!

+1
I stayed here with my partner in the second week of January. I am a skiier and she is a snowboarder. We thought the apartment met our needs perfectly.
The apartment is located literally right on the side of the piste. The door out of the ski locker room leads straight on to a blue run that leads down into La Plagne where you then have a choice of several chairlifts up, or several runs that continue down the valley. You're not going to find many apartments located better than this. All of the rooms' balconies look out over the pistes, so it's perfect at night for a glass of wine and watching the piste bashers.
Our apartment was well equipped. The kitchenette had all manner of pots and pans and utensils. Even had a steamer, a potato peeler and a cheese grater. Plus a few gadgets I couldn't fathom! The only thing missing was an oven, but there is a microwave and we soon discovered we didn't actually need an oven to cook the meals we needed. We managed to successfully make Tartiflette without an oven! The bed was very comfy, there was a huge stock of clean towels and bed linen, and the bathroom was clean and big enough. The living room was large complete with sofa beds and a dining table big enough for the number of persons the room slept. Not a single complaint from us.
The reception staff were very friendly and spoke near perfect English. They offer a bread delivery service; you order your bread the night before (baguettes, croissants, pain au chocolat etc etc) and then you collect it from reception at 0830 the following morning. While this service is very handy, we did find that you could get better bread/pastries from the Spar shop, which is in Plagne Soleil and just a 30 second walk from the hotel. We found they tasted better from Spar. While on that note, the Spar shop is reasonable priced, it was always well stocked and you can find everything you need in there.
For entertainment-wise, Plagne Soleil is a lot calmer and serene compared the larger Plagne Centre or Plagne Bellcote. You have Monica's, which is right opposite Residence Mont Soleil (you can't hear it at night in the apartment). Monica's is the centre of the village, is open all day and offers Après and drink deals from 1700 onwards, and is usually open until 0500 with live bands or DJs playing. There is also another bar known informally as The Piano Bar. There are four restaurants in Plagne Soleil. We tried two of them, and they were both 5-star. The fondue we had in one was spectacularly tasty. There is also a small square in the centre of Plagne Soleil... one night, a firework display was put on with free mulled wine and hot chocolate and an outdoor disco. A lot of the reviews on here say you have to travel to find a good restaurant. This is simply not true. There are four in Plagne Soleil, and another four or five in Plagne Villages (located literally just the other side of the blue run outside the apartment).
The whole La Plagne area is well connected by free ski buses that run every fifteen minutes, and by tele-buses that run until about 0100. It's a slick operation.
In summary, if you want a modest, but more than adequate apartment, in a quiet and tranquil village, perfect for couples or families, but without being too far from the après, then I fully recommend this place.
To finish, just a bit on the La Plagne ski area, given we're all likely to go skiing if you stay here. La plagne has a lot of blue runs. There's a lot of variation in the difficulty of them. Some are a bit tame, with flat parts that snowboarders won't get on so well with, that I would consider more of a green. There are also steeper, choppier, more technical blues that I would consider more of a red. I went there a Bambi-legged, novice skiier and came away a much better skiier and had conquered a number of red runs. I would say La Plagne is 5-star for skiiers, my partner says 4-star for snowboarders. If you want reds, the best ones are found in the Les Arcs area of Paradiski... which is just a short trip over the Vanoise Express telecabin.
Hope you all enjoy your holidays!

I'm giving this a very good mainly because we had such an amazing holiday. If you fly to somewhere like Chambery then the transfer is quite quick, less than a couple of hours. In reality, and when you first arrive, the apartments seem very small, dated and really basic. We initially had misgivings but once you get your stuff unpacked and remember that you are there on a ski holiday, and shouldn't need to spend much time in the apartment, then it all comes together.
The apartment has an electric hob, a kettle, a microwave, a dishwasher and a fridge. You also get a welcome pack with 5 dishwasher tabs, a sponge, a couple of tiny washing up liquid bottles, a cloth and a tea towel - enough for us for a week although we did eat out a lot.
When you arrive I recommend that you head out into the square in Plagne Soleil and stock up on stuff at the Spar. They sell all the essentials as well as fresh bread and croissants. You only get one or two toilet rolls so you'll need to take or buy some of those.
You get a paper bag to put your recycling in and a black bag, in a bin under the sink, for general waste. There are bins out front, in between the two Mont Soleil blocks. It's really interesting watching these being emptied. The bins are really deep and built into the ground and a crane lifts them out to empty them!
The apartments have a boot room on the ground floor and you get your own locker for your own room. It does get crammed if you have a number of snowboards and pairs of skis and there are no boot warmers, so you have to store your boots in your room.
The only usable radiator in the apartment (for drying clothes) is in the bathroom. You need to turn this on the control underneath it. As soon as you get in you need to start drying gloves and socks etc.
There was always plenty of hot water for baths and the shower was okay too.
We found the place incredibly quiet and never got any noise from rooms either side. On a couple of nights there was rowdiness at pub kick out time but nothing too bad and it never woke the kids.
The apartments all (I think) look out onto the piste and the location is unbeatable. You are literally on the edge of a great blue run that connects you with Plagne Centre. Note that the bottom of this ski run, near the Bergerie chair lift, is actually quite steep, more like a red run for about 100 metres so be careful on your first run down. Most of the ski schools start at Plagne Centre and the quickest way to get there is to ski down the blue run (Ecartee) and head to the chairlift on the left at the bottom. This takes you a short way up paste the Le France building and drops you off nicely to ski down to Plagne Centre. So anyway, on your first day, if you kids aren't strong skiers then you might want to consider getting the bus and the telecabin to Plagne Centre and try the blue run on the second day once they have their ski legs. Saying that though all three of mine made it down on the first day and it was on the second day that my youngest panicked a bit... Once they have the hang of it though it is a great run.
There is a free bus that leaves next to the metal steps (across the main square where the restaurants and ski hire shops are) every 15 minutes or so that takes you to Plagne Village across the other side of the blue run. From here you can get the free Telecabin down to Plagne centre. The connections were always spot on and we never had to wait long for a bus. Whenever we got the telecabin back from Plagne Centre, there was always a bus waiting to take us back to Plagne Soleil. Maybe we were lucky.
There are a few good restaurants and bars in Plagne Soleil. Monica's bar is good for piste-side hot chocolates. The Cap Nord is okay for a crepe but they also have an outside sitting area with heaters for a drink on a sunny day. The Pizz'allo pizza takeaway place is very good and the pizzas are excellent. You can have a sneaky beer there while you are waiting.
All in all basic accommodation but made up for by the amazing location.

We rented a 4-to-5 people flat at a cost of £300/night, with 2 adults and 3 children (6, 11, 17)
The flat was located on the far right of Building B (one of two buildings), under the slanted roof with limited ceiling height everywhere in the flat. It wasn’t possible to stand in the tiny shower, nor walk around the double bed. Finding enough space to put down our suitcases was rather challenging. As for the 3 additional sofa-beds in the living area, there are rather flimsy.
I could have lived with it if the flat had been in good shape. But it was both drab and dirty, contributing to the overall feeling of being ripped off.
There is a local SPAR and yes it’s expensive, so would advise you come ready with supply for at least two breakfast/dinner. There is a large supermarket (Leclerc) in Aime-la-Plagne, a 16km ride down the valley. Allow 30min to get to it at least.
Then all sorts of small but irritating things from the staff. They would only provide a single roll of toilet paper and a bin bag which is barely strong enouh to support its own weight. They would only take order for the Boulangerie one day at a time. The basic and free WIFI was so slow, it was simply unworkable.
So not a place we were looking forward to going back to every day. Yes it’s relatively well located, on the blue run with access to La Bergerie, but la Plagne Bellecote with its 3 chair lifts is a better place.
No, we won’t go back.
The flat was located on the far right of Building B (one of two buildings), under the slanted roof with limited ceiling height everywhere in the flat. It wasn’t possible to stand in the tiny shower, nor walk around the double bed. Finding enough space to put down our suitcases was rather challenging. We stayed here from 28 March 2015 to 4 April 2015. The location is fabulous. True ski in ski out from the boot room and close to all the main amenities in Plagne Soliel.
As with most self catering apartments it is functional as opposed to opulent but certainly met with our needs and expectations.
We paid the supplement and went for the seven room apartment (two adults, two children staying) and the extra space meant we weren't living on top of each other.
With it being truly slopeside we also skied home every lunch to give the children a break and to eat.
There is no conventional oven or toaster but a toaster can be obtained by a small deposit. The staff, from our very limited contact, were friendly and approachable and the rooms was as clean as could be expected.
I have slept in comfier beds but as I'm here to ski I can live with that and for the price it is certainly excellent value.
If we returned to Plagne Soliel we would stay here again in the seven person room

Positives
- excellent location being on an easy blue run into Plagne Centre
- just across the slope to the Telebus if you want to go down without skiing
- Friendly staff, early check-in available at €50
- lots of hot water and decent heating.
Negatives
- Very tired decor with patchy red/black carpet, awful duvet covers, bathrooms old-fashioned
- Dusty to the point that it triggered allergies in one guest who required anti-histamines all week
- Very limited storage for clothes etc.
- Kitchenette tiny with no oven or grill.
We paid over €1400/week and won't be back.

Great location within a few minutes of most things. Great family skiing with a great choice of runs that will suit most, not much in the way of reds and black runs. The local shop stocked most things but you pay for it so best to stock up before. Be aware we drove from Lyon airport and it took us 5 hours due to traffic but only 2.5 to return.
The accommodation was ideal for our family of 4, we stayed in a 2 roomed apartment so had plenty of space and the apartment was clean and comfortable with a never ending supply of hot water. The wifi was fine and we found the building to be quite during the night. We would return.

overall good. We had a very nice stay. At the reception games were avilable. The bread is of a good quality. The matrasses are very firm but the overall quality of the furniture is o.k.
Ventilation in the kitchen must be installed.

In terms of location (for skiing) this has to be 5*. The ski storage area door (block A) takes you practically out onto the piste (ecartee blue) then down to the Bergerie lift/Plagne Centre and the rest of the La Plagne area opens up from there!
All apartments appear to have good views of the pistes/mountain across to Le Biolley and behind the apartment block are the bars, restaurants etc. There is a small but well stocked Spar shop just minutes away and (I think) 4 or 5 ski (hire) shops!
I stayed in a "D-apartment" (designed for 4-5 people) which had a (double) bedroom and bed settees. Some have described the décor as 'dated' but I felt it was fine. As with most ski properties it was small for maximum occupancy. The kitchenette area had basic equipment but no oven. The microwave seemed to have a grill function but I wasn't sure how it worked. Why do some self catering properties not include instruction booklets? (or at least have access online??) Facilities for (food) storage was minimal, basically the fridge was it.
On arrival, you are given a small box containing 'cleaning stuff' consisting of dishwasher tabs, washing up liquid, cloths and a dish cloth .... more than adequate. Towels & bedding was in the apartment and needed to be placed onto bedding and then removed at end of stay. There was only one toilet roll provided so it would be a good idea to take more with you if you didn't want to buy packs at the Spar shop. It is disappointing that there was no salt/pepper in the kitchen ~ I've stayed in previous properties where these are provided or possibly left (as with extra toilet rolls) by previous occupiers.
The bathroom was perfectly adequate and I found no problem getting enough hot water for a shower although it would have been better to have had a full shower screen both for privacy (allowing someone else to use the basin) and for preventing water getting on the floor! The heated towel rail was excellent.
So why only 3*?
Firstly, as a British traveller, I expected the TV to have some English language channel(s). I've stayed in hotels/apartments in many non-English speaking countries e.g. Belgium, Germany, Poland as well as France and all have had (at least) an English news channel, but not here.
Secondly. On entering my apartment (A311) I was aware of a very unpleasant smell which I attributed to stale food or cigarette smoke (there were cigarette burns on one of the settees) and in spite of buying an air freshener, I found my eyes watering if I remained in the living area (not bedroom) for too long. Later on I thought that this smell MIGHT be due to body sweat from someone using the bed settee without bothering to use the sheets; I'm not sure, but it wasn't pleasant. I contacted reception about this and they did offer to send the cleaning maid but I couldn't see what remedy this alone would be. I feel this room needs a complete deep (steam?) clean which couldn't be accomplished while I was there. I hope that action is taken before anyone else takes occupancy.

This is a great hotel!! It is right on a blue slope, so you can grab your skis from the ski room and ski straight out! The room was lovely and had everything we needed. Lovely welcome pack provided with dishwasher tablets, washing up liquid, soap, towels etc. All bedding and towels provided, very clean. The room has a fridge, dishwasher etc, very well equipped with plenty of cutlery and crockery etc. Very big room and plenty of room for 2 people, would also be suitable for families. It was a 2 minute walk from a supermarket and near Monica's bar and restaurant au coin du feu which both had lovely food! The reception staff were friendly and we often used to pool table in reception. Really good and would definitely go back!

Hi The double bedroom is at the start of the appt ,suitable for couple, passage through to lounge with loo & separate bathroom off to one side ,large cupboard for hanging on opposite sidet,,kitchenette , dining table & chairsin main area. Two long sofas one each side of area ,large windows with door onto balcony. The 2 sofas will make up into 2 beds& 1 bed pulls out from under neath to make a third.
Ok for 3/4 very tidy people .!!Ideal couple in main bedroom ,& 1 adult in lounge area, far enough from each other for privacy as bedroom has a door. you can also shut door by kitchen. Ski locker on ground floor direct onto snow & piste.
All linen ,towels etc provided .We have spent many years there.
Spar supermarket 200/300 m away, very well stocked ! Enjoy.!
3 bedroom appartment would be called 4 pieces and I am not sure they have it. Maybe this is 2 pieces interconnected... Not sure. This would have all you need and more.
3 pieces is 2 bedroom and they will be rather small bedrooms. We managed to put our 3 kids (10,7,5) in 1 of them moving single bed from living room but then there were just 3 beds and no space. The other r[m has double bad - was great for me and my wife. Living room has space for up to 3 but it is a living room with kitchen.
It takes 2 slopes and 1 lift to center and there are 2 options to take. 15 min is fine unless cues. Took us 30 min in the worst case cue in the top season.
There are some shops around and you do not need to go to center to buy food, rent skis, etc. You can go to center by frequently running busses if bored.
We were very happy there.

"All rooms face the piste/mountain with a balcony. We had 5 person room for 2 adults and 2 children. I recommend having a bigger room than necessary as you have extra bedroom/storage rather than all sleeping in o e room in bunks."Read full review
