The Terra Nova is in a great position with easy ski in and out. The food choice is excellent and plentiful with lots of variety. The rooms were a good size we had 3 adult blokes in one room with no space issues and the separate WC and bathroom were excellent. The staff were all great the reception were always pleasant and helpful. The restaurant staff were great clearing plates quickly to ensure the table was clear for the timely serving of the excellent Maine course of which there was a choice of 5 really good dishes. Tasty choice of desserts from the buffet as well as really good choice of cheese with nuts , dried fruit and a massive selection of fresh fruit. Not to forget the ample red and white wine which was very drinkable.
The bar was well stocked with very good barmen.
Easy access to the main centre that had a great selection of bars, restaurants and shops.
I would not hesitate to rebook if I visit this area again.
And on top of all that the skiing was excellent we were blessed with 5 glorious days of weather with only a little cloud on the last 2. The pistes were well looked after which was a testament to the slope staff as it was a while since the last snow dump.
Rooms warm sometimes a little too warm, comfy bed and pillows. you can reserve your dinning table. Gala night dinner was the best they put on a glass of prosecco & drink for the kids, there was more English style of food. I feel if my husband had gone then not all food would suit plain english eaters ie herbs and sauces in all food and vegetable. More English dishes ie Shepherds Pie, pies and more stews. Kids was pasta, chips and burgers every night and pizza was a few times a week. Wine included free with every evening meal but there was no soft drinks for kids other than water which I found a bit strange. Floor 2 coming out of lift there was a horrid smell of stale smokey rooms they were staff quarters. No T & C facilities in the room and no food could be taken to the rooms which sometimes people want to chill in the room. Food dishing up area at the back you could see dirt on the floor and you could see it had not had a good clean in a while. Dining room a little chilly at times. 7pm for dinner with kids was a little late and found I had to feed them before that after a days skiing possibly 6pm. Lunchtimes sometimes the food was luke warm. Breakfast on the last day was available from 5am however we went at 6.45am and still the egg machine for boiled eggs was not ready and no baguttes, I still would return the hotel as it did not ruin my holiday
existent, food hit and miss and often served cold. Great location, direct access to easy green run and heated lockers in boot room. Several items went missing from the boot room whilst we were there, so don't leave your ski gear lying around for too long. The hotel needs to be managed properly, far too many staff hanging around doing nothing, some of whom were quite rude. Top marks to the lovely Australian lady on reception, who went out of her way to help. Improvements need to be made to bring this hotel up to standard as it could be so much better. It’s dated and in need of refurbishment but this would not be such a big deal if the rest of the services were up to scratch. Reminded me of holidays in Butlins!
The hotel was in an excellent location, with ski in ski out facilities that lead straight down to two lifts. It was also only a short 2 minute walk to the bubble lift, and a 5 minute walk to the village with its shops, restaurants and bars.
The ski hire shop was in the hotel, which made renting gear easy. We had an issue with the first set of skis, and the staff were happy to swap them no bother at all.
The facilities in the hotel were not bad, the restaurant was partly cordoned off which made it sometimes difficult to get a table, however the restaurant manager was happy to assist in locating a table if needed, but we never struggled. You could also reserve a table if you were in a large group. There are very few tables for 2 people, so if you are in a pair you might have to make some new friends at dinner, which we enjoyed.
The bar had plenty of seating, a pool table and foosball tables. There was also ping pong in the gym. The bar staff were lovely, they were happy to explain any cocktail ingredients or drinks choices. This is a cash free hotel, so bare that in mind. We used the card they give you at reception on arrival, which works as a tab for your hotel stay, with no problems at all. They give you a receipt for every transaction if you are worried about losing track of what you've spent!
We found very little wrong with the food, it was a slightly limited menu, but there was always a choice of mains, an extensive salad bar, a cheese selection and at least 3 desserts. You could go back multiple times so if you didn't like something you could just try again. The food was quite fish heavy the week we went, which I enjoyed but probably isn't for everyone. Remember this is France not England, so the food will not be served piping hot. I did hear there was a microwave though if you prefer your food warmer.
Free wine and water readily available at dinner.
The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, from reception to the bar to the restaurant.
The only slight downside was breakfast, it did lack the range of dinner. If you are expecting a full English, you aren't going to get it! but they had cereals, fruit, yoghurt, eggs, bacon, toast and pastries, Tea/Coffee facilities and fruit juices. They also had facilities to make sandwiches for the slopes.
The hotel is a little on the basic side, but overall this is a good hotel with friendly staff, a great location, and good facilities. I would stay at the Terra Nova again.
Would we return? Only if there was no other option at that price range (read: as low as possible).
The hotel is tired and only mildly pleasant (I mean barely) and only saving grace is that, quite literally, we spend absolute minimum of time inside. That's to say, sleeping, eating and getting ready to hit the slopes or getting ready for dinner after returning from the slopes. Rooms are rather bare, connected by internal doors and you can hear your 'neighbours' talking/snoring.
Food. This part is a bit funny actually. Under no circumstances try to approach hot/mains food counter with a smaller, salad plate. You will either get a stern, scowling look from one of the cooks stood behind the counter, you might be told off for using a wrong plate or, as I have witnessed on one occasion, the plate will be snatched from your hand and the cook will point you to where the correct, dinner plates are. Also, there are two trays from which, under no circumstances, should you be helping yourselves as you walk along the counter deciding what to have. You must wait for a cook to give you a piece of whatever might be in those trays at any given evening. If you try to do it yourself, you are risking for the spoon/fork to be, as with the plate, snatched from your hand and from there on, you end up in the cook's 'bad book'. On the other hand, frequent 'please' and 'thank you' do wonders with the cook.
Food itself. Dinner. Make sure not to leave arriving until too late, as the food does run out and an hour into a service nothing is guaranteed. If you are a fan of a salad bar, you might actually be pleasantly surprised. I am not a great fan myself, but the food was quite good and for the first time I have been found raiding the bar most evenings. Now, the reason for it was that the hot selection was very much hit and miss avtually. It might appear at first that there is a good selection, on some nights there is nothing sensible there. Still, not the worst ever experience we had but right at the bottom.
Breakfast was rather sorry affair but once you found your 'thing', you can stick with it for the rest of the stay. Mine was 3 soft boiled eggs, a toast, and slice of ham an cheese.
Ski lockers. Ensure you arrive early as there is little room there and, if you are unlucky, you will find someone blocking the passage for some minutes while trying to fit their ski boots on. We found the best way is to grab all your staff from the locker as quickly as possible and get into the hallway to put it all on; or there is usually plenty of space to sit in the shop/rental place which is inside the hotel right by the lockers.
I think that's it. Not a disaster but I am sure the hotel is on its way for a major refurb soon enough. Though unlikely to help with the food or stern cooks lol.
Our room was perfectly adequate but did have an interconnecting door which meant you do not need noisy neighbours! Housekeeping standards were hit and miss. The beds were comfortable, 2 singles in our room. Bathroom and toilet separate.
The reception staff were helpful and all the other staff were friendly. There is only 2 lifts and the stairs are not easy to find but it is lung busting climb to the 6th floor!
There was a good assortment of food but the evening main meals were generally warm only, not Hot. Wine with the meal was ok and water on tap. Generally a good 3star hotel but a little tired in some areas.
I wasn't expecting much for ski accomodation but this hotel is really nice, if a little dated.
The rooms are large, warm, with comfortable beds. A little too warm on some evenings when i had to leave the balcony door open but you can turn the radiators off.
The rooms also have a little balcony overlooking either the blue piste at the rear or over the road to the mountains at the front. The bathroom are a decent size with a nice hot shower which was tricky to get to your ideal temperature. Beds were comfortable with clean sheets and pillows. The cleaners make up your room daily and change things if you require.
The reception staff are really friendly and allow you to check in slightly earlier if your room is ready which i thought was really nice of them. They do take 100 euro deposit from a credit card for any damage but it isn't taken, just blocked on your card.
All of the staff were really friendly and some of them tried to speak to me in Spanish (although i speak fluent English) which i thought was nice.
I was very suprised at breakfast and evening meal, again staff around to help and pleanty of choice of things to eat. They had red and white wine on tap with different flavoured cordials if you didn't want alcohol. Actually for the evening meal there was too much choice of things to eat and you could probably eat until you exploded.
I noticed a small gym with a few bits of equipment and bar area which was quite nice to sit and chill in during the evening. The hotel is very close to the shops and other bars or places to eat too.
It is ski in ski out onto a blue piste which took you down to a lift which then took you to lots of other lifts all over the place, so it's a really good base to explore the whole of the ski area.
Skiset hire and heated Ski Lockers on site so all that was very easy and the coach dropped you off right out side the hotel so no dragging suitcases all over the place.
I was really pleased with my stay here and only had the one issue with a couple in the room above having sex every night for 5 minutes (poor girl) but i didn't mention it because what can you say! haha.
I would definately come back to this hotel.
