I was excited to get back into the travel mode after all the craziness over the past year. I used to love staying at downtown hotels, but things have changed--at least at The Sam Huston Hotel. There are lots of people loitering in the area. On the first night, I witnessed two people fighting on the sidewalk across from the hotel. Not much the hotel can do about that, but they did not address the controllables. The room was well-worn, with mold in the shower, and covering the HVAC register. Large water-stains discolored the ceiling. In addition, why stay at a "full-service" hotel when there is no service? Upon check-in, I was told that there was no "turndown service" because of COVID. What he meant was no maid service. I asked if there was a list of recommended restaurants that delivered, and was told to "look on GrubHub." Gee, why didn't I think of that? On checkout, the "valet" stood at the driver's door, while I had to ask him to open the liftgate on my vehicle, which he couldn't do, so he watched me open it, load my suitcase and close the liftgate. Obviously, no one had spent any time training him. Not only will I not return, I canceled all my reservations at Hilton Curio Collection properties I had booked over the next few weeks, and booked limited-service hotels. Again, why pay for full service when you get no service? Sad.

The area has tons of homeless. The hotel was safe and the valet was super nice and friendly. It’s vintage and has a lot of character. The rooms were clean. Bed was comfortable! I would stay here again.

The valet and the young lady that checked us in did a great job. The overall cleanliness of the surrounding area is terrible. The amount of homeless people and trash was very disappointing. Our walk to the Astros game was very unsafe. Houston has a problem!

Apparently, the management thought it was a smart cost control measure to leave the AC off in the unoccupied rooms . . . in Houston where the humidity is high and ever-present. Mildew, damp, smelly. No food service in hotel.

We traveled to Houston to visit our daughter and stayed at the Sam Houston downtown. It was a great location and the hotel was historic looking and well kept. We were a little surprised that there was no cleaning service available so we did our own bed making and towel changing, etc. It wasn't bad at all and the room was so clean at our arrival it was easy to keep it that way. These pandemic times are difficult and it shows in the service areas, on airlines, restaurants and at the Sam Houston. People did the best they could with a friendly, helpful attitude and I hope life gets back to a more normal for them and for all of us.
