The Machrie hotel is celebrated for its well-equipped rooms that provide a comfortable stay, though service levels sometimes fall short of expectations. Its cleanliness is particularly lauded, with rooms being spotlessly maintained. Despite occasional lapses in bar service, the hotel's amenities, including a picturesque golf course and indulgent spa services, are highly praised. The luxurious and inviting atmosphere is enhanced by the hotel's high-standard decor and the scenic views from the suites. However, guests should be aware of potential issues with room temperature and accessibility.

Out for a spot of lunch and then a walk at the beach. Jo-Ann took great care of me and I had a lovely lunch thanks to the chefs. Had hunter chicken and Asian slaw side. Treated myself to chips. Well worth a visit especially with the wonderful views.

We booked the Machrie for our anniversary stay as it allowed our four legged furry friend to join us on our trip and was built on a golf course. We loved everything about this place. Megan welcomed us when we arrived and was friendly and helpful throughout our stay, nice to have a local to share her knowledge of the island.
Top quality restaurant with some excellent specials to choose from and really attentive waiting staff.
Was great to have David the golf pro available on site who was helpful and always up for a chat giving me some good advice about the course. Fantastic links course in immaculate condition, got more enjoyable each time!

A few suggestions to improve would be putting a dog waste bin close to those rooms at the back as it was a bit of a trek to bin them each time we took our pooch out. Also, as so much time was spent on the terrace (the only place to legally drink alcohol at the moment) lighting up some of the course or paths out to the ocean would really highlight the beautiful setting even in the evening.
Overall a fabulous stay and we will certainly be back!

A beautiful hotel for a great stay on Islay. The hotel is in the most amazing location with beautiful views across the golf link and the beach. The hotel rooms itself are cosy, well decorated and huge! There is welcome fruit and still/sparking water in your room on arrival. The bed is the biggest/comfiest bed I've ever been in with amazing linen. Great touch in the eve with a turn down service, including the placement of slippers at the side of the bed. The hotel restaurant is AMAZING. One of the best meals I've had in a hotel to date. Can't fault this hotel and would highly recommend to anyone visiting Islay.

We booked a two night stay in a sea view room through Booking.Com at a cost of nearly £500. Unfortunately the ground floor room (Room 20) whilst very pleasant had no sea view. In addition the room lacked air conditioning and was very hot. However being on the ground floor we couldn't open the french windows overnight for security reasons .We advised reception at checkout of our disappointment and suggested in view of the lack of sea view for which we paid extra a token reduction in the very high cost of the room would seem reasonable. The helpful receptionist offered to speak to the manager but returned advising the manager wasn't prepared to offer any reduction. Given the cost of the stay, an appearance and apology in person from the manager would have been appreciated. I would add that the reception and dining room staff were excellent , and the hotel was extremely clean and safe, but we left feeling that we had overpaid for what we received and will stay elsewhere on our return to Islay.

We visited The Machrie today for lunch. On arrival we were waiting at the stand that asked us to wait there to be seated.. after standing several minutes a member of staff realised we were standing there when a really loud alarm sounded to say remove obstruction! We were then greeted and advised to take a photo of the menu which was written on a board. They are unable to issue menus due to COVID which I appreciate but is there a big issue to laminate copies of the menu and sanitize them inbetween use?
We are then shown to our table and once seated we noticed this table hadn't been wiped at all as there was crumbs all over the table from the previous sitting. We asked the staff to clear this which they did but the crumbs only ended up onto our legs and onto the floor!
Ordered drinks which took around 13/14 minutes to arrive with two members of staff behind the bar. Ordered our meals before the 2 only other tables that were in the restaurant and yet seemed to receive our food last which took around 35 minutes to arrive. We ordered a kids cheese pizza, two beef burgers, fish and chips and a cheese and pickle sandwich?
Ordered another drink only to be advised they could no longer serve the pineapple juice because the manager has just noticed that it has today's date on it and so she is no longer willing to serve anymore (nothing to say about the glass we had already consumed).
Moving on to dessert and when we asked for the chocolate brownie with ice cream, the member of staff (who previously claimed to work 12 hour shifts every day there) went to double check if that is something that they serve as he has never been asked for it before although it was clearly written on the menu board and surely if you work those hours "every day" someone is bound to have asked for that dessert at some point? He returns to the table to thank us for educating him about that as he had never heard of it before.
Feeling totally disappointed we then paid for the bill and agreed that it's very unlikely we would be back.

As a local we decided to spend our Hogmanay at the Machrie.
Our room was excellent it was spacious and had all the extras..bath robes etc lovely view out towards the front of hotel.
The special menu was first class and something you would expect from a high class restaurant all was beautifully presented and service was spot on.
All staff were extremely welcoming and couldn’t do anymore for you.We enjoyed the use of the cinema room to watch some Hogmanay programmes on the big screen.
At midnight we were given a glass of fizz and welcomed in 2020 with other guests and staff.
Also the Spa treatment was spot on too.
Thanks to all for a brilliant stay and we will be booking again for next year.

Although we didn’t stay at The Machrie ( we opted to stay at the superb & very nearby, Glenegedale House) we decided to eat one evening at the Machrie Hotel. We had a thoroughly enjoyable meal and accompanying SA red. Gabriel, our excellent Portugese waiter, looked after us superbly well and is a huge asset to the hotel. My doble baked soufflé and brisket special were delightful as was my chocolate & pistachio dessert. My wife enjoyed her starter of heirloom tomato, local ricotta and melon followed by a beautifully cooked ribeye steak. Every member of the team from Siobhan at reception to a Iain, the restaurant manager and his team were welcoming, especially the aforementioned Gabriel. Overall, a lovely meal and evening. The hotel was fully Covid adhering to Covid regulations which waste-assuring.

We just returned from a two-day stay at the Machrie Hotel on the island of Islay. Amazing place for everyone who is looking for peace in luxurious conditions and accessible by wide Scottish nature. The golf course around the hotel makes a great impression, it is fantastically maintained and is adjacent to a beautiful beach. Nice discreet service, Very good food and the interior of the restaurant that tastes even better. Special tasted delicious juicy salmon with a crispy crust. The lobby on the floor exudes spaciousness, invites comfortable couches, intimate lighting and crackling fire in the fireplace to sit down and look at the wonderful beauty outside the window. Our room was bright, spacious with direct access to the golf course and a great comfortable bed to use with absolute silence and darkness at night completed blissful relaxation. We highly recommend even in winter.

Just back from a 4-night stay at the Machrie and what a fabulous time we have had. We booked 2 executive rooms (room 23 and 24) which allowed our teenage son to have his own space but with the 2 rooms being linked by a private hallway, they could be left open and create a joint space. The rooms are fabulous and very spacious, from the décor, the amenities to the comfort and the view on the golf course, simply wonderful rooms.
From the moment we arrived, the Machrie staff was so welcoming and accommodating. We were greeted by Lorna, who took us on a tour of the whole facility, provided us with tons of information about the Island (which was very useful since this was our first time in Islay) and who throughout our entire stay has been so attentive and a ray of sunshine. Reina also helped us throughout our stay and was the person who recommended the executive rooms, which fitted our needs perfectly.
All the facilities available at the Machrie are tremendous, great snug for games on rainy days, an actual cinema room, lounges where you can lose yourself in a good book in front of a fire and of course, the tremendous golf facilities. We were warmly welcomed by the Pro, David Foley who took the time to give us great details about the course. Even in winter, the 18-hole course is in great condition for the time of year. There is also a small par 3 course, which can be enjoyed if you don’t fancy a full round. The hotel also offers a Trackman simulator, which came really handy one of our rainy mornings. David and his son Dale bring such golf expertise and in such a friendly manner.
And in addition to all this, we enjoyed delicious food during our stay. The breakfast is something we looked forward to every morning, with a great selection of both continental and cooked to order warm dishes. At dinner, your can choose from both the lunch menu, which offers great classics like Fish & Chips, burgers, etc. or from the dinner menu, offering more refined dishes, so definitely something for everyone. We were lucky to be looked after by amazing staff. Our first mention goes to Gabriel who through his expertise made us discover new wines and spirits. Reece and Shalom brought us such great attention throughout our stay, such a friendly manner and always with a smile.
Another impressive asset of the Machrie is the gorgeous beach just off the golf course. Gorgeous scenery for wonderful walks.
The hotel is impeccably run under the leadership of Ed Richardson, the General Manager who also brought a personal touch to our stay.
This was our first time in Islay and the Machrie and its staff made it such a memorable experience, thank you. We hope to come back soon

We enjoyed a three day break as part of a wider staycation in Scottish hotels.

This hotel had the most extreme Covid 19 restrictions which may or may not align with what you want as a guest. We were very happy with the well marked one way system and were happy to comply even though it added a lot of steps each day. Sadly many others including staff if not. Masks have to be worn at all times except when eating or drinking. We were advised by a member of staff we had to keep them on even when sitting in the lounge several metres from anyone after dinner as we were not drinking which wasn't a great experience so we just went back to our room each evening.

We did find the interpretation of the need to ventilate the restaurant to be excessive, every window was open and the doors to the balcony were wedged wide open. There was a gale blowing on two of the nights and rather low temperatures outdoors so sadly dinner was not a great experience, we were frozen, no "warmer" tables were available and again for Covid reasons staff wanted you to sit at the same table each time we came. I would not come back whilst this rule is being so rigidly applied as it spoilt the stay.

The food served was very good (though got rather cold quite quickly in the icy blast). The choice was very limited though as the menu did not change each night. We were not advised of specials on the first night, on the second night due to Covid restrictions they had not been able to make any specials, however we did manage to get a special on the third night which was great.

Service at breakfast was chaotic, tables were being overlooked and staff members did not know who had ordered what and were wandering around with plates of food. We got the wrong order on two days but as the staff were trying hard, we said nothing, however other 4/5 star hotels we stayed at on the trip had managed to upskill their staff in the new normal.

Information accessed via the Q code in the room had not been updated, staff advised that they could not give any paper out to guests in any form (so without an enabled mobile phone you re in trouble - we only had one so ordering dinner got tricky!) however it was amusing at the end of the trip to be handed a paper copy of the bill and not offered an email version as other hotels did.

The location is brilliant, the rooms are well appointed and beautifully set out. We had absolutely no issue having a grass bank rather than sea view on the ground floor as the little terrace would have been lovely in good weather.

I appreciate the hotel was trying to keep everyone safe but compared to the high end establishments on the mainland and other islands we stayed in on our trip they should look at how far they should impact on the guest experience.
