Travellers' Choice
Coul House was built in 1821 and is set in the hills above Contin and offers scenic views and an award-winning restaurant. Located within 5 miles of Loch Achilty and Loch Ussie, this hotel is only 20 minutes' drive from Inverness. The spacious twenty one rooms are individually decorated, and many have period features and garden views. All rooms have a flat-screen TV, a private bathroom with free toiletries, tea and coffee facilities and a seating area. Free Wi-Fi is included. Many of our repeat guests have their favourite room; whether it is for its accessibility to the outside to let the dog out or for the commanding views down the glen. The restaurant has a unique octagonal shape and an ornate ceiling. Serving a contemporary gourmet menu using local produce, there is also a wide ranging wine list. We are known for our versatility here at Coul House, often saying that our meal times are guide lines not deadlines. Chef Garry offers a range of dining options which includes both contemporary Scottish Cuisine and some more traditional favourites. I am sure you will agree there’s something for everyone to relish whether it’s for Lunch, Afternoon Tea, or Dinner. With plenty of space to relax and wind down, you’ll find yourself in awe of unique architecture, ornate plasterwork, fine craftsmanship and the unusual shapes which adorn the interiors of Coul House Hotel. Magnificent fireplaces, ornate ceilings and great views from all of the public areas create a unique environment with a very relaxing ambiance. Set in eight acres of beautiful mature woodland, Coul House is opposite the biking track to Rogie Waterfalls, in Achilty Forest. Free private parking is available and the market town of Dingwall is just 6 miles away. Beauly can be reached after a 20-minute drive. Nearby attractions include the castles at Dunrobin and Cawdor, Glen Ord Whisky

A very friendly welcome awaits and an excellent menu for dinner meant we left feeling very happy and contented. Stuart, the owner was great advising us on wine choices. The bar and restaurant have a refined feel making you think for a short while that you live there permanently, just what you want from a country house hotel.

Had a wonderful stay at Coul House Hotel. Very relaxed atmosphere. Beautiful hotel and grounds. Evening meal and breakfast were superb! All members of staff were very pleasant, attentive but not overbearing - bravo! Beata, in particular, was a superb member of the team. Will definitely stay again. Thank you 😁

Other venues had already closed so we stopped in for Sunday late afternoon tea on the terrace with stunning views, delicious homemade scones, complimentary shortbread, good value and excellent service. What not to like??

From the minute we drove up along the long drive and walked in to the reception hall and found ourselves stood in front of an enormous fireplace with a beautiful ornate carved hardwood surround, we knew we may well have stumbled on to something truly enchanting. We were shown our suite and our baggage was brought up for us. My wife and I are very fussy but what can I say, we were utterly impressed. The bathroom had a free standing bath, television, heated floor, large shower cubicle, 2 sinks and was very large. Our bedroom contained a beautiful 4 poster bed, period furniture with a separate seating area, ample free standing wardrobe space and a small dining table in case we wanted to order breakfast in bed. The room was beautifully decorated. My wife and I both cook well and we consider ourselves to be foodies. So we went downstairs to the hotel restaurant with high hopes but we were not disappointed. The menu is modern Scottish but at the same time perfectly adventurous whilst based on local produce. We ended up dining there every night in an effort to try everything on the menu. The venison is sublime! The rabbit starter paired with a bottle of their Riesling will bowl you over. They have an excellent wine list and I did not think it to be extortionate at all. Even their cheaper bottles were very good indeed. The breakfasts menu is excellent and the dishes are cooked and served at your table. The scrambled eggs and smoked salmon is excellent (especially with haggis on the side). The service is excellent and the owners and staff can not do enough for you. The house is gorgeous with a lovely history. The owners and staff are very knowledgeable and passionate about the house and it's history. The grounds are beautiful and the location is excellent for site seeing around the highlands. We even took a walk after dinner one evening to the old Mackenzie family cemetery, who were the original owners of the manor house. I can definitely say that we will be back again.
