First Trout Haven Fishing Resort is amazing
and my family loved it!
We caught a direct Flight from Mesa, AZ to Rapid City, SD on Allegiant Airlines. In 2.5 hours we were in Rapid City.

This was our first trip to South Dakota and a big part of it was to see Mt. Rushmore and ride horses and ATV's. We picked Trout Haven because it started in 1952 and has a long history of creating memories and showing families a great time. It is also in the heart of the Black Hills and close to everything.

Trout Haven was so amazing and beautiful. We rented a 2 bedroom cabin that had just been remodeled by the new owners. We were not disappointed.
The cabin had a nice deck over looking the resort.
We saw an Eagle that seemed to be home at Trout Haven.
What an amazing thing to see. The wild life and pure beauty was worth the stay.

Trout Haven had stocked trout ponds and they provided all the poles, bait and license. You just pay a modest amount for each fish you catch. Yes, they even clean the fish for you. It was a real bonding experience for my family. If you are not a world class fisherman like myself but still want a stress less thrill then go catch a fresh trout.

The on site restaurant will cook the trout fresh for you.
The menu was diverse and we ate there several times.
Buffalo hot dogs and burgers, ribs, beer, brownie ice cream desserts. Vacation food ;)

We also rented ATV's at Trout Haven for a full day.
They were fully automatic and the resort is by an endless amount of trails. We had the time of our lives. The fishing is a given for the family but rent an ATV if you want pure FUN!

The new owners and all the staff at Trout Haven were first class and very polite. You knew that they cared and wanted us to have an amazing family vacation. They also knew all the best places to visit and explore on a limited budget.
It's good to have local knowledge.

We also must mention how cool the tipi's were and the playground. Free stuff for the kids and horse shoe's.
Free games for the cabins and free DVD rentals.
The resort also had a community fire pit called Party Haven.
It was fun to meet people from all over the country.
We give it a thumbs up and the you'll love it!

We arrived at Trout Haven on a Tuesday afternoon and were greated by the friendly owners and staff. This is a family owned business and they really take the time to get to know all of their guests. We felt right at home from the get go! My children fished right away and the staff did everything from bait the hook to cleaning the fish. My 10 year old daughter really enjoyed watching the staff clean the fish right in front of her! Some of the crazy staff will even eat a fish heart for a tip of $5.00. Yuck!! The cabins were very clean and newly remodeled. We took our kids on a 4 hour ATV tour with Chuck who was an awsome guide. I was nervous my kids wouln't last but they did and we had a blast. It was one of the highlights of our trip. Chuck knew the trails and showed us some sites off the beaten trail. Anybody staying at Trout Haven has to rent the ATV's and take a guided tour with Chuck! The cafe was a pleasant surprise. The food was fantastic. Breakfast was a highlight of the day! The interior is small but nice, looks newly remodeled. They also serve beer. My only complaint is they didn't stay open longer for cocktails at night, I think they close at 8 pm. Everyday the staff greated my family by our names which was a nice touch. This place is a total package, nice cabins, great cafe with beer, fishing, ATV rentals and great owners and staff! Most other resorts don't take the time to get to know their guests like this one does. If you needed anything extra, they were always willing to get it for you. The location was perfect too. We were between Deaedwood and Hill City which gave us a central location to all the activities we wanted to do. When we return to the Black Hills, we will definately stay here again!

We stayed here for 2 days, the 5th and 6th of July. My two 8 year old boys got to catch their first fish ever!!! They were so thrilled, and the staff was so friendly, they were just about to close when we arrived, but they stayed open and baited the hooks for the boys, and waited until everyone caught a fish, then they cooked all of the fish fresh for us for dinner in their cafe. That night the staff came over to our RV site to check how the dinner was, and gave us firewood to make a fire and stayed and chatted with our family for a while. This is a great place with old fashioned hospitality, You must make this place a stop on your vacation, You won`t regret it.

I know of two couples that have been given notice and forced to move from this park. Told that they could have year round site. They put lots of money in their lot. Owner threw them out with two week notice. This park does not fall under year round park so the owner is legally allowed to do this. Try moving your whole home in two weeks.

We were touring the area and decided to stop in and stay. Trout Haven has an absolute beautiful view and we enjoyed the scenery. We were impressed with the natural beauty surrounding the Resort. We did not fish as the cost was a bit steep .80 cents an inch for the small fish and 2.00 an inch for the large and we were unable to connect using phone or internet or television (you may use their phone in emergency or wifi in their cafe where they also have dish service hooked up to a couple of big screens) which was not an issue as we were just passing through. We were unable to use the septic at the site but they did have septic on the premise. It is centrally located to other attractions and is 19 miles from Rapid City and Deadwood. It is the busiest out in the middle of nowhere spot and is conveniently located right off of hwy 385. It is a bit of a tourist trap as it is in the middle of nowhere, but a lovely one at least. We had a nice stay getting away from it all.

This was a great place to stay. It is family owned, (new owners), and they are very helpful and friendly. The cabin was very clean. The cafe had great breakfast. My son caught two trout in the pond and they cooked it up for him in the morning for breakfast. They were wonderful and I highly recommend you stay here. It is also located centrally in the black hills so that all of the attractions, no matter the distance, is about the same.

The cabins were perfecf just what I expected, they had very rustic feel. The cabins were very clean and comfortable. The price to stay here is very reasonable. The hospitality was great, the staff were accommodating and outgoing. They would help you with anything you needed. The fishing was very easy and fun! My son caught his first fish here and boy was he excited! The breakfast was second to none. If you are ever in the rapid/dead wood area check this place out. It will not disappoint!!

We were very excited to stay here with the kids based on previous reviews and what was listed on their website. What a let down! The staff was rude on multiple occasions and acted like we were a bother by even being there. The cabin smelled terrible, none of the amenities listed on the website were present, the water was so bad you could not take showers without feeling more dirty than when getting in and not to mention the water smelled so bad it stunk up the cabin for hours. Most uncomfortable beds we have ever slept on. We only stayed there to sleep since it was so bad. If we had known that it was nothing like their website shows we would have stayed in a hotel and saved money. We spent extra for a "resort" and there was nothing there that we would recommend, fishing was a joke, and kitchenette is stretching it. We make yearly trips to South Dakota and this is the first time we have been disappointed.

I just returned from a two night stay at Trout Haven and thought it was a great location. My friend and I stayed on a tent site for only $15/night. We chose this campground for it's central location to Mount Rushmore and Deadwood (each site is 30 minutes away).

Things I did like about resort: Location. Staff was very friendly - we bought wood and they drove it up to our camp site for us. We were able to choose which campsite we wanted to stay on. Shower facilities were very clean.

Things I didn't like: Prices - besides the site itself the prices they charged for amenities were ridiculous. They charged $6.50 for a bag of ice (we had bought similar sizes for about $2 at gas stations). They also charged $18 for a 12 pack although I was told later the bar next door will sell it to you much cheaper. Also, they charged a standard $5/bundle for wood. However, the next door neighbors were selling 2 bundles for $5 and their bundles had more wood in them.
They also didn't have our reservation when we showed up (booked through deadwood.org) although they were very accommodating and just asked to see our confirmed itinerary as proof.

Also, we were there in what the owners said was a very dead week and we were the only people on tent sites. However, if this place was crowded you would have zero privacy as the sites are extremely close together.

No reflection on the resort but when we were there it was easily the worst two nights of sleep I've had in quite a while. First night was extremely windy and almost knocked over our tent and the second night it dropped down into the 40's.

We stopped at this place on the way to Deadwood and were glad we did. We just had breakfast there. They caught the trout fresh from their stocked pond and cooked it on the spot. It was great. We saw the tourists riding their atv's Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves and next time we go to this area we will be sure to spend more time at this beautiful place.

They have a fishing pond stocked with rainbow trout. We caught 6 trouts and paid about $50, so the price is probably about 70¢ per inch. No license is needed, and they provide the fishing poles and bait (very simple but good enough for this kind of fishing). Fishing itself is extra easy, great for kids and first-time beginners like me but probably too easy for more sophisticated fishermen.
