Whenever we are in the area of Lancaster, we ALWAYS stop for the night (or 2) at the Red Caboose.
No longer solely red, the collection of 50+ cobooses (cabeese?) are looking better and better due to efforts by the owners to spruce up this attraction (in its 50th year in 2020!!)

We had been planning a trip for a month, and kept checking the prices of the various rooms and to our extreme amazement, rooms that we have rented many times before for about $130/night were being advertised for $1250/night.
So we thought - lets go down in person and ask.

Arrived mid afternoon on a Wednesday...tried the door (to the reception desk, also the entrance to the gift shop) but it was locked.
The sign for the restaurant dining car (Casey Jones) did say it was open, but we didn't bother.

So unfortunately, our trip to Ronks had to result in no overnight caboose stay for the first time. I'm sure the cabooses will be better than ever for the summer season though, as it appears that they have been adding new stairs and porches.

We arrived Friday afternoon, and drove through Paradise, PA on the way to the motel. U.S.Route 30 is a busy route, but the motel is nestled a few miles out in the country. We had to take a detour since the Ronks Rd. bridge is under construction. But, once we got here, and learned our way around we settled in nicely. The staff was friendly, and very helpful. Our room was very comfortable, and functional with 2 bedrooms, a large bathroom and shower/tub, with the sink in the hall. There was a microwave, fridge, coffeemaker, and large flat-screen tv (with cable) as well. The beds are very comfortable, with soft pillows. Heat is supplied through baseboard heaters, and there is an AC unit in each bedroom.
There are about 19 cabooses in the complex, with varying degrees of accommodations.
The main building houses the Casey Jones restaurant and a very large gift shop full of reasonably-priced clothing, books, gifts, toys, Christmas decorations, etc.
The food and ice cream at the Casey Jones restaurant is tasty, and a good value.
The complex also has a petting zoo (miniature horses, goats, and llamas), Amish buggy rides, and a silo that has been converted into an observation tower.
The Strasburg Scenic Railroad and Penn. Railroad museum are only about a mile away.
We highly recommend this establishment for a unique getaway that the entire family would love.

PROS: Great staff, (Christina) LOVED dining in train car restaurant, delicious breakfast and dinner, wait staff uber friendly, (All, especially Kristen) very beautiful and peaceful grounds, buggy rides right on site, cute petting zoo right on sight, Strasford Railroad train goes right by and sounds wonderful, close to everything (Strasford Railroad Train Station), nostalgia of caboose sleeping cars is just a hoot (some caboose cars need exterior paint repair, but I found it a non- distracting part of the experience), owners constantly updating cars, cars are plenty spacious if you consider it’s a caboose and do your research, first, car #21 microwave, fridge and a/c all worked fine, plenty of lights and outlets, very attractive cabin decor, plenty of towels, cups, etc.,cars DO NOT rock or shift, heard NO noise from surrounding cabooses, stayed one night...Would DEF stay again. Would DEF suggest you experience it, but not if you prefer 4 star hotels only, silly....These are 100 year old cabooses.

CONS: Replace current window coverings to assure full window coverage, shampoo the rugs regularly to help reduce the slight musty scent in the room, mattresses were perfectly fine, but bumping up the grade would please people, I’m sure.

Overall Red Caboose Motel gets a five star from me...Because the entire experience was unique, happy, peaceful, nostalgic, and charming.

A fun night for a rail fan - 38 cabooses, each decked out as your own motel room. We stayed in a recently refurbished New York Central caboose. It had been remodeled inside with drywall and was neatly decorated with train curtains and train artwork on the walls. We stayed in another caboose motel in Texas previously, that still had the wood trim inside which seemed more authentic, but this was a nice room, none the less. Very quiet, comfortable beds, and excellent service at the office. They have a restaurant and gift shop on property which were very handy. This would a lot of fun for kids - highly recommend for families. New owner is doing a good job of improving this property.

Just stayed here with my husband and son... and my expectations prior to arrival were pretty low. I have a train loving toddler and I knew he'd love this place no matter what. I absolutely got lucky that I got #41 which was technically reserved for those that require accessible rooms. (Ramp, large doorway, etc) This was newly renovated so it was super clean, had a large private porch with 4 adirondack chairs/table, two double beds, huge bath and to my surprise a fridge with separate freezer section. I can't recommend this place enough especially if you're a train fanatic. Christine in the lobby was beyond helpful and called me about 1/2 hour after checking in to make sure all was ok. I appreciate her enthusiasm and her knowledge with the motel/trains/restaurant, I was so impressed. I'll definitely be back and would not hesitate to recommend this to anyone. This is definitely a no frills kinda place but provided everything that I needed to have an enjoyable stay. (As others mentioned, there are buggy rides ride on premises, HUGE/well stocked giftshop, petting area, two playground areas, silo that you can walk up and my favorite part is being able to see the train go by. )

Always ready for a new experience, we booked a night in a caboose. Ours had a queen bed. The office called shortly after we arrived in our room to asked if everything was O.K. I mentioned that the air filter of the A/C in the bathroom was very much in need of a cleaning. We were offered an immediate visit by housekeeping to remedy the issue. I declined it, but suggested it be cleaned before the next tenants. Caboose a bit dark, since opening blinds would let all passing by to see in. Smaller area than I anticipated. Lots to do on grounds for kids. Silo "lookout" required climbing spiral stairs to top.....would burn off kid energy. Also petting farm and buggy rides available. The Strasburg RR passes right by property....fun to watch.

On a trip to Lancaster, PA, I was looking for a hotel/motel for my 88 year old mother and me. She loves trains. When I found the Red Caboose, I thought I'd give it a try and surprise her. I knew she'd love staying in a train car! It was fantastic and met all our expectations. We stayed in the "Double Double Caboose". The room was great. It was updated, spotless, and included a small refrigerator/freezer and microwave. Casey Jones's restaurant had great food (we ate breakfast and two dinners there). All the staff were so friendly and helpful. The location is awesome - minutes away from Kitchen Kettle Village and Bird-in-Hand as well as other attractions. It was just a delightful weekend!

You don't have to have little kids or like trains to enjoy your visit here. We stayed 2 nights and I think that my husband and I enjoyed it more than our two boys. Our "room", the mail car, was plenty spacious for our family and the train passed right in front of the motel. You can't get any closer than that! The property has an old silo that has been converted into a viewing tower, there is a small playground on site, and the petting zoo had a handful of animals as well. The Casey Jones Restaurant had great food at reasonable prices and the staff was very friendly. We cannot wait to go back especially when the restaurant opens for dine-in seating. I would highly recommend this experience to anyone young or old.

My wife and I were visiting the awesome Railroad Museum of Pa and got a little Hungry so we drove over to the nearby Red Caboose properties. Service was great in all sections, staff was nice. Decor matched the theme to a T. food was above average for such a small ish location away from a "big city. Prices were reasonable. Looking to maybe stay overnight on one of the cabooses at a later time, stay tuned!

The cabooses are nice and cozy. The AC and the heaters worked well. Everything in the room worked fine. Because you are sleeping in your own train car there is a lot of privacy and no noise from the next car. The bathroom was tiny and so was the shower. If you like trains then you will love this hotel and the area. If you aren't a fan of trains then you will hate this place.

The Strasburg RR Station is just down the hill and excursion trains run right in front of the hotel several times a day. There is a railroad crossing so you will hear many trains horns and you will see several steam engines close up.

We had breakfast at the restaurant every morning and it was very nice. The coffee tasted wonderful. I loved the chance to eat scrapple.

I do not know if they do. But I have found any city I have visited, always has a visitor center where maps and discount coupons can be picked up. Plus the personal knowledge of the area's best known places to see from their own experiences.

Is it pet friendly?
Answer from
Upper Darby, Pennsylvania
Hello, lisatayloriv187, I am sorry to say, not pet friendly..only service dogs allowed. I had the same problem. I think nearby there is one pet friendly motel but very small like a closet size room. This is why I am not posting the name of it. Apologize I could not help further but hoped in some way it did. thank you, Lu

What type of room is the Reading? I'm looking to fit two adults and two 3 year olds (too small for bunk beds).
Strasburg, Pennsylvania
Hello! The Reading Caboose was recently renovated and now features a single queen bed. There is a small area to sleep up in the cupola using a sleeping bag but we don't count that toward the capacity of the room. We market this room as being for 2 people. Your better bet would be to request a "Small Family Caboose." The Small Family Cabooses have a double bed and a set of bunk beds. If you have any other questions we would be happy to answer them. Give us a call at 717-687-5000. All aboard!
