#2 of 2 hotels in Yarmouth
The George Hotel is a 17th Century townhouse enjoying a wonderful location nestling on the water’s edge between the castle and pier in the bustling harbour town of Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight. This magnificent building is steeped in history and was once home to the most noteworthy of the Island’s Governors, Sir Robert Holmes who often entertained King Charles II. Today the country house interior with its sweeping staircase, ancient panelling, uneven floors and stone flags is complemented by smart contemporary flourishes. The 17 bedrooms are individually designed, many with spectacular views of the Solent or the vibrant harbour.

Although I had booked a prestige room with a balcony some 3 ish months previously I was very disappointed on arrival to find the room had been given to someone else and the room allocated instead although very comfortable was overlooking the street and not the Solent. However the deputy manager who was on reception dealt with my complaint very well. We were given a reduced rate plus a lovely bottle of champagne with our dinner plus a few more extras. This was a surprise birthday treat for my husband and although almost ruined turned out to be a fantastic weekend. The staff from front reception to the rest of the staff in the bars snd restaurants were extremely attentive snd helpful throughout. We will be going back to the correct room next time, would recommend The George Hotel as a brilliant place

Stay at this hotel to get the easiest access to the fab "beach club/restaurant". Especially during a packed pandemic summer, where every restaurant is over booked, it is worth it. Staff were super friendly and accommodating. The hotel is in a "traditional" house, so don't expect every room to be uniformly good. If that upsets you, go down to the bar, order yourself a nice drink, and chill! I will certainly be coming back.

We had booked a Prestige room which was on the ground floor. The room was lovely however it had a terrace outside which was full of junk and clearly a space to dump stuff, not something you want to see from your window especially if you are paying almost a £1000 to stay there for two nights. We ended up being moved to a different room which was smaller but had a lovely view overlooking the sea. We were a party of 6 and the other two couples had booked Prestige rooms too. One couple’s bed was very hard and when they mentioned it to reception the lady there said ‘oh yes it hasn’t been changed in years’! The other couple had no problems with their room until the second day when they turned a pillow over and it as covered in disgusting black marks. Food is absolutely delicious but the service is incredibly slow. It took 20 minutes for our drinks to arrive when we had dinner the first night. Most of the staff also seemed incapable of making coffee correctly, we had to send a lot of ‘flat whites’ back as they turned up as milky lattes and tasted awful. It also surprised me that there were holes in the carpet and armchairs in the seating areas also had holes. Considering that hospitality has been closed a lot for the past year you would have thought that that was the perfect time to make improvements. Overall the George is massively overpriced.

I was a guest with the wedding party on the 20th July 2021, and had a fantastic day. We were looked after at the bar by a bespectacled man who was very friendly and efficient. We were later looked after at our table for a few hours by a young waiter called William. William was patient and friendly despite dealing with a large table feeling merry on sunshine and Aperol. He couldn’t have done enough for us, and he made the day what it was. Please, please pass on our thanks and let him that he’s an asset to The George.

I came to the George to simply exchange my income for some very expensive drinks (honestly though, £8 for a pint is nothing less than extortion). What I left with was a feeling of dejection and offence. If there was a competition for making someone feel unwelcome the George should put their maitre d'hotel up for nomination. If you're going to make a poor excuse for someone not to visit your establishment just stick with the one; you don't need to tell them that: 1. the garden is fully booked now (swathes of empty tables) 2. the garden is closed (there were people there) 3. the garden is fully booked later Now I may not be in the top income tax bracket but I feel that I still have the right to be treated like a human being, which is an area the George unconditionally failed in. Please preserve your humanity and do not visit this establishment.
