Room pokey (had to tuck chair under desk to move), bathroom pokier, shower limp, Bed like a board, in sheer desperation doubled quilt and tried to sleep on that for cushioning ( and I like a hard bed!) others in my party agreed. Staff didn't care, not even asked if all OK on departure. Grounds lovely, food OK but nothing special for the price. Would not recommend

Hotel is a beautiful building with stunning grounds. However our allocated room was situated at the top of the building (reached by 70 stairs at various difficult levels). The room was very average and there was no view as the window was obscured, presumably to block the view of the scaffolding ! We requested a change of room but told, after some confusion by reception staff, that the hotel was full but that a refund could be made - no managerial presence and reception frequently not staffed. Dining experience very slow- there seems to be a lack of staff everywhere and those available obviously inexperienced but doing their best without any guidance. There has been no response email to manager (who was never available) and no refund. (Contact with hotel owners is next step !)

We stayed here just for one night as a family of 5, enroute back to Devon after a night flight from Gatwick. We got to the hotel just before 1pm and were able to go straight to our room. We opted for a double king sized bed family room as I knew our family could quite easily sleep under these conditions. Our room was lovely and the interior was in line with hotel decor. Our bathroom was just fabulous, fashionable but still keeping with hotel overall feel and decor. Have to say the bathroom was massive so enjoy. We stayed on dinner, bed and breakfast basis and the evening meal was pretty good. Not a lot of choice compared to the 'normal evening menu' but what we ordered was tasty. The only thing that let this hotel down and made it feel cheap was the breakfast. Just not what I was expecting of a hotel that felt 'a step above the others'. Breakfast was self service....I can only hope this is due to Covid. If not, then the hotel has ample staff to make this a ordered occasion and FRESH. One more slight negative was that we felt the waitoring staff lacked experience of the hotel and what they offered. This only applied to the day time bar staff as evening meal waitoring staff were engaging and genuinely interested in what we had to say. Overall we would come back, especially if they upped their game at breakfast time and implementated a order menu.

We were greeted at 6pm by a dour male receptionist who told us we couldn’t have dinner because it was fully booked. In all our travels we have never been refused an evening meal as residents. We struggled to the second floor with luggage as no lift, but no offer of help. Our special evening ended up as a bar snack..poor menu.. and extortionate drinks. The barman was very friendly. On leaving, we settled the bill and asked for a receipt which was not offered. Before handing it over the receptionist said it was for the wrong room. No void receipt was offered. Utterly awful

Really disappointing and wouldn’t return or recommend. Far too expensive for a very standard tea. No homemade cakes, sandwiches really cold just out of the fridge. Restaurant was just set up for a standard hotel service no tablecloths etc. Paying £24 per person is too much when compared to a wonderful tea had at other local venues I.e Tylney Hall wished had gone there but thought a change would be good but so wrong. Only thing I would say is the lady serving was polite and working on her own and doing her best. It’s a lovely venue and probably lovely to stay but go somewhere else for an afternoon tea. Wish I read other reviews before booking
