Set in the pristine Northern Drakensberg of Mpumalanga, this wilderness and fly-fishing retreat is a haven for nature-lovers and adventurers alike! Just 2 and a half hours from Johannesburg, guests experience a true 'reset' getaway - our lodge is nestled within a gorge right on the Komati River, with beautiful views at every turn. We offer a range of accommodation options from large 12 sleeper self catered homes to bed and breakfast suites on the river, as well as hiking huts for those who prefer to 'rough it' a little. Activities abound here at Komati Gorge Lodge - we offer picnics at "Blue Lagoon", horse riding, hiking (the Kranskloof Hiking trail is on our property, as well as several of our own marked routes), mountain biking, fishing, archery, paintball, clay pigeon shooting, canoeing or tubing down the river and game drives, where you can enjoy a sundowner overlooking the exquisite wilderness of our 2000 hectares.

Sandy, our host, was amazing from start to finish. She advised on road conditions, weather, bird life and even allowed us to order our food to prepare for the loadshedding schedule. After a welcomed cup of tea, we had a great drive round the property, watching the sun go down with the black ibis over one of the dams. Then finished off with a lovely dinner. Despite the loadshedding challenges, this family has done everything possible to make you feel at home after a long drive. It’s my third visit, and I’ll always make an effort to go back when I can.

This review is relatively objective, being my 16th road trip, this time staying in 14 properties over a 39 night period. We stayed for 3 nights in February, this being my second visit. Easily found off the R36 on a well maintained gravel road normally suitable for sedans. However, due to the heavy rains/dam water being released, the final access road was impassable and we were met at an adjacent property and led in over a 4X4 trail - our 4x2 Hyundai Tucson managed - just! Upon departure the river level had dropped sufficiently to use the normal ‘sedan’ route. Ross and Sandy were welcoming, efficient and helpful hosts, as were all staff we encountered. The lodge is really well maintained in every respect, without being over manicured - a difficult balance to achieve. Lovely to have the horses wandering free. We stayed in the riverside Kingfisher ‘chalet’ - more of a detached house, which was excellent in every respect. Brilliant star gazing. WiFi very patchy in the chalet, but strong by the office - not the end of the world. We didn’t use the DSTV. On site generator for load shedding periods. We didn’t self cater but used the excellent restaurant - good food at reasonable prices. Hiking trails well signed and maintained, although some were unusable due to the high river levels. The non big 5 game evening drive revealed another side of the Lodge - really worth going out with Ross for this. Highly recommended.

Our third visit to Komati Gorge. A truly wonderful place, set in a stunning remote gorge, surrounded by wilderness. Lovely high quality rooms with stunning views, excellent food, and most importantly Ross and Sandy are fantastic hosts - nothing was too much trouble, and we left feeling like friends. Our next trip needs to be a longer one to explore the hiking trails.

This review is relatively objective as this my 15th road trip, this time staying at 7 properties over a period of 21 days. Easily found along a surprisingly good quality gravel road by following the very clear directions supplied by the Lodge. Ross was very welcoming and informative. Staff throughout were friendly. What a great location, with superb vistas. My riverside suite was modern, large, clean, comfortable and well equipped. A clue in the name with great views of the river and canyon/gorge walls. Meals in the very atmospheric restaurant were to a good standard. The restaurant and bar/lounge have obviously been designed by someone with flair and a desire to relax guests. There’s a generator on site to take care of Eskom load shedding. The outside deck area overlooking the river was very relaxing. All internal and external areas are very well maintained. Unlike some properties which advertise walking trails, the trails at Komati Gorge were very well marked and maintained - loved my walks. For the fishermen there are the river and well maintained dams. Next time I’ll try the MTB trails in an area with wild life. Very limited cellphone coverage as you’d expect in a remote deep gorge with scratchy, but workable WiFi. Highly recommended - if I’m back in the area I’ll return.

Komati Gorge Lodge was just wonderful. Comfortable rooms with a fireplace. Great food at the restaurant. Really good and well marked hiking and MTB trails. Ross and Sandy are super hosts. The scenery and nature is simply stunning, with lots of diversity - running rivers (with swimming options), rolling hills, cliffs and gorges, diverse game, good birding options etc. This is a place to truly connect and feel wild and free within the natural environment. Don’t stay here on a stopover, make it a destination. Already looking forward to my next visit!

What a peaceful and pleasant break-away from the Covid-driving new norm in Johannesburg and the rest or the world! Ross and Sandy with their 2 sons, amazing staff and Rusty, the dog, do everything to make it an experience worth having in a world where everything has changed. A gem hidden outside Carolina within an afternoon's driving from Johannesburg took us to peace and tranquility with beautiful hikes, mountain biking and a glas of wine looking at the river flowing past. Lovely chalets, restaurant and pub ad the necessities for leaving only with your toothbrush and wallet to regain sanity in a world that has changed for us all. We will be back!

This is one of the best resorts in South Africa, Ross and Sandy the management couple are the most welcoming hosts I have ever met. The resort is just amazing with both Sandy and Ross making sure we where OK all the time and also suggesting great family activities. The hikes are really great the fishing for trout was brilliant and the access to the komati river was on another level with lots of great yellow fishing spots. The birding was also very rewarding. Gaming viewing, river tubing, fishing, hiking... just too much to list. Thank you to the team at KGL but a big thank you to Sandy and Ross, these guys are really on another level with the way they manage the resort. ah and the food was also really good, make sure to ask for the tomato soup :). You really cant go wrong with this place so much to offer and only 3 hours from Jozi.

We loved our recent stay at KGL. The security guard at the gate was expecting us and informed reception about 3km away of our arrival. The staff at reception waited for us with drinks and gave us all the necessary information pertaining to the lodge and activities available during our stay. This level of service continued for the duration of our visit with all the staff going out of their way to make us feel welcome. We will visit again!

As returning guests we feel like family. From the guard at the entrace gate to the staff looking after the terrain, all welcomed us back with open arms and smiling faces. Nothing we requested was too much trouble to get or arrange for us. Amanda and staff, thank you for making Komati Gorge Lodge a second home for us. Birdlife and game was in abundance again, with the light drizzle in the morning painting grass and flowers with diamonds through the camera lense. The food was again top notch - compliments to your chef. We will be back soon.

This amazing lodge is hidden along the Komati River. Beautifully set along the river out of mobile phone reception is an added bonus. This pet friendly lodge has great walking trails for you and your four legged family members. There is also MTB in and around the farm as-well a 4x4 route with great scenic drives. Accessible by most cars along a well maintained dirt road. The management and staff are friendly and accommodating. Highly recommended!
