The approach to the small but very pretty Moncioni is “interesting”, with no shortage of hairpins but the reward of wonderful views over central Tuscany. Top tip one if you arrive in a car is not to drive right up to Sassolini’s wrought iron gates (you will find yourself reversing downhill through a narrow archway) but to park on the road immediately below the hotel: it’s free and was safe for our soft top for the two days of our stay. Our welcome was less than rapturous and unfortunately that was a bit of a theme: staff were ok but really didn’t add anything to the experience. Nobody made any attempt to form any kind of a relationship with us. Our room, 7, up several flights of stairs, so for the less sprightly maybe ask for one on a lower floor or take the lift, was large, with a chestnut wood floor and a limed beam ceiling. Decor was very good, in muted greens and amenities good quality. However, Wi-Fi connection was hit and miss, air con came and went. Perhaps least satisfactory was the bath/shower, which actually requires you to climb onto the two feet high surround then down into the bath for ablutions. For those perhaps not in the first flush of youth, or less physically able, this is very difficult verging on dangerous, on wet surfaces. More positive are the views from the breakfast and pool area which are magnificent, though partly obscured by trees which would benefit from being lopped. Top tip two is the restaurant Vin Divino, 100 metres below the hotel. It is friendly, multi lingual and serves good Italian food and wine at sensible prices. Two can eat very well without stinting for under €100. Overall, Sassolini is a glorious property in a great location undermined slightly by some practical flaws and staff who might be a little more engaging.

We arrived to a hearty welcome from the Manager, Andrea. Nothing was too much trouble and we upgraded to a beautiful suite. The whole space has been carefully designed to suit contemporary living, with stunning artefacts, paintings, mirrors and a collection of wall mounted clocks created by the owner Marcello, who pain staking renovated the villa a number of years ago. Each room has a unique clock fashioned in metal, each telling a different time. Marcello also popped into the lounge to say “ciao” too. Clever hidden doors disguise service rooms and cupboards, each decorated with giant mirrors, ensuring the a cosy, homely environment.

The evening menu is small but each dish perfectly produced with local ingredients and a reasonable selection of wines, many options for local Chianti, along with vino from across the country.

Each bedroom or suite is individually designed and Andrea offered a tour to view a few options for our next visit. A private spa, with small plunge pool, sauna and steam offered a chance to unwind and relax. A small gym, with treadmill too.

The most breath taking feature is the view from the terrace and outside pool. You can literally see have the Tuscan landscape and mountains in the distance. Ever changing throughout the day, as the light, clouds and even occasional rain, float by.

Fantastic place!

My partner and I had a wonderful experience at this magnificent luxury villa in Tuscany.

The rooms are wonderful, functional, and equipped with everything necessary for a great stay. The hospitality is excellent, and the staff is very kind and helpful. They always promptly assisted us with any requests and also provided recommendations for things to do and places to see.

The location is truly excellent, as it is situated in a typical Tuscan village, 20 minutes from Chianti, 40 minutes from Florence, 50 minutes from Siena, and 40 minutes from Arezzo. It is perfect for those who, like us, want to stay in a relaxing place and explore Tuscany with ease, as it is centrally located to all major points of interest. It also offers breathtaking views of the Arno Valley, as it is located on a hill.

Furthermore, one thing we really liked is that this luxury hotel also has a delicious on-site restaurant and an excellent outdoor restaurant called Vin di Vino, with beautiful modern interior design and very good local cuisine served with elegance. At the end of our day exploring Tuscany, it was always a pleasure to return to this place, both to relax and enjoy the good food. Not to mention the excellent pool, sauna, Turkish bath, spa, massages, and more!

In short, I recommend anyone who wants to have a magnificent and relaxing stay in Tuscany to choose this place!
We will be back soon 😁

The hotel is very nicely decorated but not managed at all and for this price totally unacceptable.
The bed in the room makes so much noice that just breathing will make it impossible for your partner (or yourself) to sleep.
The hotel is run by two Rumanians (one present during breakfast and the other one during dinner) and an Italian girl (doing the reception work and helps during breakfast) who do their utmost to make things work as the manager (owner??) does nothing at all. (If he is not the owner, I would advise the real owner to fire him immediately as the man is not only useless but very arrogant as well).
The dinner in the evening could have been so nice as the setting is beautiful, if only they had a chef in the kitchen (maybe he/she was fired because of the Covid closure).
If you are looking for traditional Italian dishes (pastas, raviolis etc) forget it and there are no vegetarian choice on the menu (wouldn’t think this was still possible in 2020).
The dishes which are being served are of appalling quality as it seems they serve the leftovers/end pieces of the fish and pork to the guests whereas the manager/owner is enjoying the best parts; yes he is sitting there in the evening enjoying his dinner at the first table on the terras and yes he is served first and yes he gets the best pieces of the fish and the meat for all guests to see!!!
We have during the 3 nights that we stayed here not seen him ones do anything or interact with any of the guests.
He was sitting at the table very close to us while I complained about the food to the friendly Rumanian but our manager/owner did nothing and said nothing!!
The second evening, trying our luck again in the restaurant, things didn’t get any better; a steak tartare was served of 3rd grade beef in big chunks which even a loin would have to serous work on.
I gave up and left it by the starter and returned the steak tartare but my wife was brave and even went for a dessert; the first night we had a crème Mille-feuille whereby the crème certainly wasn’t freshly made which turned out to be the case as the same crème was served the second night in a glas with an apricot on top as a pech-melba. I assume that they will use the same crème for their other two dishes on the dessert menu.
The breakfast wasn’t much better with factory bread rolls and caned orange juice (of the worst kind); their excuse was that it wasn’t the season for oranges (how come we can by then the year around.
All in all this is a hotel has lost the plot (it seems that they have only received 1 and 2 ratings in 2020). I assume the hotel, like others in the sector have had tough times, but instead of justifying their premium hotel prices, they are trying to make up for the losses on the back of their guests.
This could be a great place but what a missed opportunity and the manager should really look in the mirror and wonder if he should not find himself another job, as hospitality is certainly not his forte.

Fantastic hotel but poor and amateur service throughout.
Checkin was inattentive and unwelcoming. We felt like an inconvenience. Front desk always understaffed, not staffed at all. Had to wander around the hotel to find help. Room nice but horribly over-priced.
Not enough pool beds for guests
Bikes were poorly maintained. Most of spa out of order. Having it in a separate locked and unstaffed building elsewhere in the village was not inviting
Dinner a catalogue of disasters....
We arrived about 815pm and all tables full soon after. George was rushing around like he was in a race. Not his fault because the restaurant was understaffed. He was only person serving 8 tables other than one person who came out occasionally and looked like he was helping out and not trained. No tables received any food for over an hour. We all looked at each other wondering why nothing, literally nothing came out of the kitchen. Only food was a big family who had finished when we arrived.
Eventually at 950pm I complained to George and our starter arrived quickly afterwords. The rest of the meal followed but was not of a high quality. Probably the least accomplished dinner we had in a week in Italy. One couple simply walked out before they were served.
Then a person who looked like the owner came out a few times to talk Italian to friends. Then just after 10pm he sat down at a spare table and was immediately served dinner without waiting.
We had a booking for 3 nights but immediately cancelled the 2nd and 3rd night and left as soon as possible the following morning.
The whole experience was as if the original owners and creators had built a nice hotel and then left it to new management who are disinterested amateurs at service. That is why I called it upscale "Fawlty Towers" the name of a famous UK comedy series about a badly run hotel.

Beautiful remote setting at the top of a winding hill. Hotel interiors are well designed, small pool, great view. We stayed for 4 nights with 3 kids in room 7/8. My main reason for writing this review is the room, we arrived on a 36 degree day and the air conditioning was at 27 celcius and took 48 hours to get down to 22, it was roasting, it should not take this long to cool a room. The air conditioning system was being controlled by staff in the hotel office v’s in-room controls. They did provide a fan but it was unacceptable that the air conditioning didn’t work given what we had paid for the rooms. The lights flickered, the internet was inconsistent and the international power socket did not work and they made no attempt to fix it. The hotel is very quiet and not a family hotel, the continental breakfast is 15 euros each + 6 euros for eggs. There is 1 restaurant across the road from the hotel (the hotel only serves breakfast and lunch) there are no other options in the tiny village. Be prepared to drive if you want restaurant variety.

We absolutely loved our romantic 4x night stay at Villa Sassolini. Despite having bad weather and it being so remote we felt it was perfect for cosy stay. We enjoyed the breakfast, drove for a wine tasting close by, spent the wet afternoons playing chess, reading and enjoying the spa! The onsite restaurant far exceeded our expectations (I'm a huge foodie and was worried re. reviews), it delivered elegant classic cuisine, at it's finest (we went to some modern restaurants peddling haute cuisine close by, to which it was far superior) with a heck of a view, the silence of the valley and brilliant service,... and we could both drink VinoSanto to our hearts content and pootle back to our hotel room! Our highlight was the cooking class, again I was a little nervous (I'm a big cook) but it was so well presented, organised, the lunch delicious (we did have some help!) and the recipe card is our prized highlight of our whole trip. From reviews here I think it's worth noting that this part of Italy is expensive and Villa Sassolini is really a rather unique, authentic and a special gem!
My only feedback would be is that it's worth noting this is not an adults only hotel which, given it's intimacy and romantic nature was a serious struggle, with a couple of families making noise and dominating spaces, as families do. Whilst staff seemed to do miraculous job of accommodating everyone, having U5s screaming, bombing in the pool and dominating the row of limited sunbeds or games room wasn't relaxing - seems like a very odd choice on their part IMO!

The hotel as well as our room were very nice but the service level does not meet the requirements we have for a hotel in this price class:
1. No one helped with the bags at check - in and checkout
2. We have not received any introduction in the hotel facilities:
a) the restaurant is closed and only the vin divino is open
b) we have not received any introduction in the SPA and no one showed it to us even though it is in a different room
3. We have not been served at the pool. For every new drink or water we had to look for waiter which could serve us
4. As the restaurant was closed, we asked if the reception could assist us with recommendation and a reservation near by. They could not help and did not help with the reservation either once we had googled for a restaurant ourselves.

All in all, its a nice hotel, but for 720 euros (2 nights) excluding any consumption the service is very poor.

Villa Sassolini is situated in the most amazing setting. Overlooking the rolling hills you feel like you are in a movie set. The Villa has been renovated to an amazing standard and you feel like you are living in a luxury magazine. We had a fantastic room overlooking the pool and hills and loved waking up to the view.

The staff were very attentive and helpful especially Cristian who took us on a great wine tour of the area.

Breakfast and lunch were always what we wanted but we were a little bit disappointed with dinner. Pizza at Divino was great if you are looking for a more casual dinner. If you are looking for something more fancy I would head down the hill.

Would we come back? Most definitely!

Villa Sassolini is spectacular in every way. From the beautifully decorated reception spaces and hidden rooms inside and out, to the wonderful pool area with stunning views, just the perfect place to relax on a sunny afternoon.
We spent three blissful nights in a fabulous suite which had everything we could wish for to make our stay perfect.
The staff were fantastic - always discrete, but always available to offer an aperol spritz by the pool, or assist with restaurant recommendations and reservations, or to advise on the most suitable Chianti tour.
We extended our stay by one night as we just did not want to leave. We can’t recommend Villa Sassolini enough.

I would suggest Florence, as it was 30 minutes by train from the Montevardi. Montevardi is about 20 mins by car from the hotel, as it’s up in the hills.
