The venerable "Emerson on Hurumzi", Grande Dame of restored palaces in Zanzibar has returned to service under the acclaimed management of "Emerson Spice". The same majestic building with the same spectacular views is developing a new concept of lunch and dinner. Designed to marry the culture and style of the building with the distinct culinary heritage of the era, The main house that today hosts Emerson on Hurumzi has particular historical significance since it was where the abolition and emancipation of slaves occurred in the 1870's. The recent refurbishment attempts to maintain the quality and style of the period in which it was built in the late 1800's whilst combining period antique furnishings with colour and comfort of the 21st century, a curiously magnificent building with historical significance and unique style.

The service at the property was wonderful and everyone was very kind and attentive. We had an AMAZING dinner on the rooftop terrace restaurant (the highest rooftop in Stone Town with awesome 360 views) and one of the best meals we had in Zanzibar. The quality of the food and service was absolutely wonderful. We'd come back to the restaurant anytime.

We stayed in the Suite Tour. It was an interesting room with a cool little private rooftop terrace. The room itself is very pretty with lovely details like fresh flowers but the furnishings were a bit dingy and could use a bit of a refresh. Furniture is old with some stains and dust. There was no soap in the bathroom/shower area until we asked. There is only a curtain to keep the toilet private, but the curtain is right next to the toilet so there's actually no room to close it. There is no door between the staircase to the terrace and the room, so turning the air conditioning on means losing half the air as it goes up an exits through the rooftop. The room was very warm and humid.

All in all, great stay in a very unique property with an excellent restaurant and very nice staff. The only recommendation is to refresh the rooms a bit and perhaps make a more efficient cooling plan for the Suite Tour so not all the air conditioning escapes through the roof.

Thank you for your review and your suggestions, we will definitely put these in our list to address. The evening breeze "over the bed" air-conditioning unit that we are trying out in two of our rooms might be the solution as it both can give a more comfortable sleep and be more environmentally friendly cooling only where it is needed, not as you say loosing to much to the high sealing and exit out to the rooftop. Our furniture are antique and we like to try to keep them as original as possible, but, yes indeed, a refresh is on the schedule. Thank you again and warmly welcome back

We stayed three nights at Emerson in the Blue Room - we enjoyed the large space of our suite (separate bedroom/living area) and the rich character in everything from the ornately carved doors to the furniture. AC was strong and kept us comfortable at night and helped dampen the noise from the street - it’s in the heart of Stone Town, after all. The hotel also provided a box of essentials (toothpaste, toothbrush, soaps, shampoos, Tylenol, ear plugs) in case any were forgotten at home. Location was right in the centre of Stone Town, close to parking/the sea front and with several good cafes and restaurants near by. Breakfast of fresh fruits, eggs to order, and pancakes with cardamon spice was very filling. We also had dinner one evening on the rooftop. Prix fixe with 3 courses of tasty Swahili dishes and live traditional music, with views of the sea. Definitely recommend both the restaurant and the hotel for a character-rich experience in Stone Town.

A well thought out guest experience from the none plastic water bottles to the handmade soaps made by the local women.
I love the fact they keep the community interests at heart when designing the perfect guest experiences.
The rooms are spacious and breakfast can be served in the room or communal area.
One of my favorite meals was on their roof top restaurant paired with some great cocktails and friendly staff
Highly recommended!

We stayed in the “Keep” suite. We absolutely loved it. We felt swept back in time. The private rooftop balcony has the most amazing views and luscious, refreshing breezes. The service was beyond top notch. Breakfast brought to our balcony each morning - starting with coffee and delicious local fresh fruit and avocado. The fruit followed by eggs cooked to our preference and a selection of breads. Overall, the service was amazing. The free laundry a gift after 8 days on safari (note the safari hotel charged 138.00 for a small load?!). The unit air condition in our sleeping quarters worked very well. There were plants and flowers dripping everywhere. The open areas swept and immaculate. Warning to anyone with mobility challenges, the room is on the fourth floor, crossing rooms and planked walkways, the balcony on the fifth. Steps are a little steep and more shallow than modern construction. Don’t miss dinner at their restaurant or sister restaurant, Emerson spice. Both, spectacular.

The lunch option definitely did it for me. At first I was worried about eating a hot meal in the blazing sun but the location of the tea house is such that you have some breeze whilst seated on the floor/lower seats to eat your meal. Its great for sharing but make sure you ascertain they bring enough food if your party is more than two. The waiters are nice, the service and views are great so that you forget the flights of stairs going up. I also think you get more out of the lunch offer in terms of view and pricing. Veggie for 10 dollars and fish for 15 dollars

Lovely accommodation in an old building in the centre of Stone Town with great furniture and decor. Very Instagrammable. The staff were very helpful, arranging trips for me, helping me sort a SIM, advising how to book a PCR, doing laundry and printing my travel documents. The rooftop terrace has great views. The rooms (I was in Blue then West) were beautifully decorated, quirky and comfortable.

The vegetarian lunch on the rooftop was excellent at $10, so I ate there twice. (I wished I'd eaten there three times as I tried Secret Garden, part of the sister hotel, and didn't enjoy the food as much. It was nice, but I preferred Hurumzi's.) The dinner, by comparison, seemed ridiculous at $40. I've only ever paid that much for a vegetarian meal in the finest of restaurants in New York, so I skipped it here.

I chose the wrong time to be there as overnight in Stone Town is horribly noisy during Ramadan so I got little sleep. It'd be lovely at other times of year.

A friend and I decided to make a girls trip to Zanzibar in Sept'21 and came across the sunset to sunrise package. We chose the North Room since it seemed like the most requested room! We arrived at the hotel with an icy hibiscus tea welcome drink, such a refreshing and unique drink to start our time here!

The receptionist helped us carry our big bags upstairs, so we didn't have to worry about anything! Each floor had a different decoration, out of all, the Muslim girl peeking at the peacock wall painting was my absolute favourite, we also enjoyed our lady receptionist's story telling about this wall painting - make sure you hear about it when you visit!

The high bed in the room was extravagant, and we particularly found the experience of someone making our bed and setting our mosquito net before sundown extra royal and truly felt like such queens! At night, when we came back from the night market, we captured the moonlight over the outdoor shower/bath with our camera, and it was such a romantic setting that we thought we could enjoy with our future partners.

We also had dinner (included in our package) in the rooftop tea garden in a Swahilian way! What a beautiful experience, and such amazing, exotic and fresh food with many varieties (both of us are big foodies and have rather high standards for food when we travel) and an amazing first day to the start of our trip!

The next morning, we had the breakfast brought to us on our veranda, starting with a tropical fruit platter, made up of avocado, yellow passion fruit, bananas, pineapples and watermelons, served with coffee, and followed with normal egg & toast breakfast. Again, felt like a royal!

Everything was amazing here at Emerson, and a great moment to reminisce over when we think about Zanzibar again xxx

We booked a table for 4 and were asked to arrive around 6pm (as we were staying elsewhere) to enjoy the sunset from the roof terrace and also so that we would be there for when service started at 7pm. This all sounded great as did the traditional music that accompanied the dinner. We were hoping for a relaxed dinner with stunning views and background music. What we got was a reasonable dinner, stunning views but not exactly background music. The thing that really ruined the evening for us was when the singer walked around collecting money and the waiter shouted down the stairs after us to not forget to write a TA review. We had hoped for an experience that matched the upmarket price and in all honesty the money would have been better spent on another roof top!

Dear guest, Thank you for writing a review about our restaurant. I am sorry that you were not able to fully appreciate the evening. The evening experience in our restaurant gives in various ways an experience of Zanzibari traditions and provides an insight into Zanzibar cuisine and culture. It is a pity that this did not match your expectations. During dinner service, the musicians of the Dhow Countries Music Academy play traditional Taarab music. They usually play a few songs, pause during the call to prayer, and another short break a bit later. The musicians as well as the academy are properly paid for the performances, and require no further donations. During the evening they will explain a bit more about the school and invite guests to the concerts that are organised there. The musicians do not walk around collecting money, however it might be that other guests tipped the singer, who moves through the restaurant, which is a common gesture, especially among Zanzibaris when traditional music is performed, but this is absolutely not a must. On a future visit to Stone Town, perhaps we may welcome you to our restaurant during lunch, to enjoy the daytime views over Stone Town and the sea. The Tea House restaurant at Emerson Spice is also a good option for those who like to try an interesting meal in beautiful surroundings. Kind regards, Lisenka and the team of Emerson on Hurumzi

This hotel is a home that had been converted into a hotel, with each room a unique exotic experience. Our room had air conditioning, although it was always open to the outdoors at the top, which was perhaps not awesome ecologically-speaking. I failed to get a picture of the amazing bathtub. We only used the shower, but it was really stunning. They also had local soaps made by a women's cooperative. I brought them home and am using them now to remind me of our trip. The only hiccup here is that the toilet was under the stairs with just a curtain, no door. We developed a strategy of just saying hey, I think upstairs might be interesting right now. I was a little concerned when we first got to our room. The bathroom situation was really not up to par with what we would normally expect. Also, the couch and arm chair, while looking lovely in photos, are quite broken down with pokey springs, so they aren't terribly comfortable to sit on. Our other option in Stonetown was the Park Hyatt, which would have been a very different experience. On balance, however, I'm glad we stayed at a local place and saw something so unique and wonderful.

We had a wonderful time in Emerson. It is a place like no other, each room is different but every single one has loads of character. It feels like stepping back in history, each room is beautifully decorated and the staff makes you feel immediately at home. Staff go above and beyond to make sure you have the best stay possible. We had forgotten stuff in our room, and staff made sure it got sent to our home address. Can only warmly recommend this place and we will definitely be back.

Answer from Management E
Stone Town, Tanzania
Dear Crystal, All rooms in Emerson on Hurumzi are indeed different in their setup, please see below difference in between the rooms: The suites Keep, Tour and Zenana have AC and coffee/tea making facilities in the room. Keep and Tour are suites with their own private rooftop Tea House with views over Stone Town and the sea. Zenana is located on the first floor and also has a balcony. Rooms North and East are open rooms on the third floor, with a balcony/veranda and views over Stone Town and the sea. Because an AC would not work in these open rooms, the rooms North and East are instead equipped with an Evening Breeze, which cools the air in and around the bed. Seyyed, Rose and Blue also are rooms with airconditioning, but don't have a balcony. At any time of day there are public spaces in the hotel where you are welcome to sit outside. In each of the rooms it is possible to order coffee and tea or other drinks from the drinks menu and our waiters will bring this to your room. For further details about the rooms, you are welcome to have a look on our website and contact us on e-mail. Hope we may welcome you to Emerson on Hurumzi soon!

Answer from Management E

In Emerson on Hurumzi, each room is differently designed and decorated. Several rooms are equipped with AC. One room on the top floor has an Evening Breeze, which cools the bed to a pleasant temperature. There are two rooms on the top floor that have quite an open character and much airflow. These two rooms are equipped with a ceiling fan only. When you make your reservation with Emerson on Hurumzi, please let us know your preferences for the room and we will do our best to accommodate.
