We Loved this hotel. Located in the heart of Stone Town with direct access to the beach. We’ve not once needed a taxi as it’s within walking distance of all the attractions in this historic location. Staff was great and really very friendly and super helpful. The room/apartment is big and we loved the use of local Arab/Asian architecture and furniture to retain the historical charm of the place.

The hotel is in Stone town.We visited during peak Christmas season and it was only through Agoda I managed to book a room here.We ,an adult and 2 kids(11,15) ,stayed here for 4 nights.
The location as mentioned by many is very good.Sort of walkable to all touristy places in stone town. The room we stayed had 2 double beds (very high to climb)and still had good space to spare. There is small balcony but we hardly used it other then putting our wet towels etc to dry.The swimming pool in courtyard was well used by kids and is decent.Towels for pool are separately provided.
The breakfast included in the booking was excellent with good spread .Though the hotel was full we never faced problem finding seats to sit or lack of any item.
The waiters though were selective with their service, prefering certain tourist over others even in terms of greeting.
My only problem was with bath tub.Beautiful to look at but very impractical. The shower is placed in such way that the water comes straight down where there are knobs of the taps blocking access .It hard to bath.In the sitting down tap , even me who is less then 5 feet can't fit .They need to change those showers to hand shower asap.

Dear pragati9, Thank you for staying with us at Dhow Palace Hotel during the festive season, and for taking your time to rate, review and shar your thoughts on TripAdvisor. The bathrooms are styled after traditional Arab inspired hamams, where one actually sits down to shower... However, your points shall be looked into and modifications made where need be. We hope to see you sometime again. Kind regards

Don't want to be too harsh on the place but you can't feel comfortable there.

The place has a good location, has an authentic look, it is near the beach of Stone Town, the post office is also very close, you can buy shillings there, the shops are also near but that's all.

After a 7 hour long flight we finally thought that we are going to have some rest but as soon as we got into our room we were warmly welcomed by a cockroach. They were everywhere, under the bed mattress, on the walls, under the fridge, (soon over our suitcases). When I took a look under the bed there were balls of dust which could also be noticed on the chest of drawers.

Also the strong odor, after 2 weeks it still haunts us through our clothes. Please keep your clothes inside the suitcases, keep the suitcases zipped to stop roaches crawl inside as well as to keep the smell away.

I understand "it's Africa" but it wouldn't cost much to clean, keep bugs away and maintain good or neutral smell. Would it?

Food was okay. If you are very picky then this isn't a place for you. Every morning you'd have scrambled eggs, fresh croissants, pancakes, lots of fresh fruit, tea, coffee.

We stayed at the Dhow after our Safari in Tanzania for 2 nights. Our room was quiet and comfortable. We had room 11 on the main floor. 2 small bottles of water were provided each day. Coffee was provided. The fridge worked! Nice to have a cold drink! Had trouble with the kettle, the front desk was prompt to replace. There was a safe in the room but we were told all valuables should be stored at the office as the safe was not working. We did take breakfast at the Dhow. Eggs made to order. Cereal, yogurt fruit and toast, some sausage. We also had lunch there the day we checked in. A grilled sandwich. The pool was refreshing. It was very hot and humid for us while we were there Feb 2024. There is a sign, the pool is deep. For those that aren't strong swimmers be aware it is 3 meters deep in the main part of the pool. There is a great view of the city and harbour from the top floor of the building and interesting artifacts sprinkled throughout the floors be sure to take some time to check it out. We did notice other tours stopping in at the Dhow because of its historical significance. As with most places there is a tip box at the front desk and tips are shared among all staff. The location was convenient to walk to sights, shopping, market and restaurants.

We did use trip advisor to book a private tour of stone town which we enjoyed and felt was well worth it. It included sights at the harbour, Slave market and fish meat and spice market.

Love this hotel, it is full of Zanzibari character with antiques, fountains, stained glass, carved wooden balconies and an old world Indian feel. Swimming pool
Is fabulous and the rooftop rooms offer a great view of the Stone Town rooftops. The breakfast is a little odd with lunch items offered but you can order eggs, and there is fruit, cereal and pastries alongside soup and pasta. Tea and coffee in the rooms and a fridge. Loved my outside bathtub/ shower and the space in the room. Clean, welcoming and full of character. Much nicer than staying at a Hilton or a Hyatt, this is the real thing.

The hotel is gorgeous. It's like going back in time. The hallways, passages, and common areas are truly a gem.

The good: The staff is beyond friendly and helpful. Great smiles and humor from these guys. I seriously enjoyed them. The pool is beautiful, although I didn't try it. The location is great as you can walk to the center to see all the major attractions in a matter of minutes.

Okay: The wifi was okay. It was a bit slow, but I've in Africa and that seems to be the standard in some places. The breakfast was okay, fresh fruit, eggs to order, and some other offerings such as beans and toast. I would have liked some of the foods to be better guarded, meaning I don't want to find the bread for toasting covered in flies. I stuck to eggs and fruit mostly. The fruit was fresh and tasty and the eggs were eggs. The room I had was suitable for the price. I slept well the first night tired from a flight, the other two nights I did not. Not sure if it was because the mattress was a bit hard for my liking. The room did have working AC which was great and the shower worked great.

Can be improved: The overall cleanliness. You'll find that the classic style of these buildings has open baths of which the tops of the walls were covered in cobwebs and could do well if cleaned. There is a piano or two in the open areas near the rooms. Children walk past and slap on the keys which can disturb you if you are trying to sleep. I booked a room with a ''garden view'' but was given a view of an alley..okay.

Would I stay here again? I could. I think some of the rooms are better than others. I think it all depends on your needs. If you are hard to please, don't stay here. If you're easygoing, it could work for you.

When it says family friendly , what it means is over run with kids . On the pool table, shrieking and clacking balls.

The swimming pool is not a place to relax its full of children dive bombing , morning noon and evening. I couldn't sit round the pool or even sit out on my balcony due to children noise .

Breakfast is unpeaceful , parents seem to let their kids free to devour the buffet breakfast .

Walking tour guides bring clients in - its like Picaddily Circus .

I left a day early for some peace . I had been camping across Zim , Zambia, Malawi and was desperate to relax - not possible , kids everywhere.

Stone town is hotels and tourist shops , locals give you hard sell and you have to persistently be saying no thank you .

Very disappointed in hotel and Stone Town

We spend 1 night in the hotel, The desk staff were very friendly and accommodating (even upgrading us to a suite). The room are quite big, clean and the decor was amazing, included an en suite bathroom with large sultan style shower, solid wood furniture, a little balcony.

The location was excellent , stone town is not very big so from the hotel you can pretty much walk every where. It is also located a less than 10 minute walk away from the Freddie Mercury house and museum :)

The breakfast was good thought the menu for dinner and lunch we pretty uninspiring (Pizza, pasta, burgers, sandwiches e.t.c).

We were offered the use of hotel facilities even after we checked out , our flight was late afternoon which was very kind of them.

One thing i would point out (not sure if it said on the hotel website) is that its a non-alcohol hotel.

We had a great stay and would recommend the hotel!

Okay so the reason why we booked this hotel is because the other options offered by our tour company were either way out of budget or we had to stay more than one night.
So we came to the hotel with no expectations really, because we paid a “lower price”. However here are my observations:
Staff is okay. Usually at the places we went to on the mainland staff is extra nice, welcoming and would do anything for you. So we found it was a big difference.
Our room was small, no place to sit anywhere except for the bed or the toilet sit.
AC was the best part of the room I guess, worked fine and kept us cool. However I got a bit cold at night and the covers on the bed are veeeeery thin.
Sheets on the bed were basic and it had a permanent blood-like stain on it. In my opinion, if the sheets are permanently stained, you should discard them and definitely not use them for guests again.
Toilet was very small, nothing to put your amenities, toiletries or cosmetics on except for a tiny shelf or the toilet seat.
Shower was… colourful which made me wary of its cleanliness. But water was warm and good water pressure.
Breakfast and dining room were definitely dissapointing! As we were picking stuff to eat, we were just praying we wouldn’t get sick afterwards. The table we sat at looked looked dirty, and we didn’t dare to use the salt and pepper because the shakers were horribly either rusted or greasy (I didn’t wanna touch).

Another good point is the beautiful doors each room has. The riad style hotel gives you a “moroccan” vibe. Pool looked clean but we didn’t use it.

Overall, if you can pick somewhere else, do it.
