I had the experience of a life-time at Kwihala Camp. The staff there was so welcoming and made sure they helped make my experience very special. My safari guide Gilbertwas so wonderful and knowledgable and taught me so many incredible things about African wildlife. And I saw so many incredible animals including a pack of lions. The camp itself was so beautiful. The tents we so lovely and comfortable and had so many amenities. The meals were exceptional and and I loved sharing meals with some of the other guests. Overall, this was a great experience.
We visited Tanzania in 2012 and were lucky enough to have stayed at our first Asilia Camp -- Olakira. After such an amazing visit there, we opted to stay at Kwihala (and later Jabali Ridge). Kwihala did not disappoint. Our tent #1 was specious enough with nice chairs inside to relax between game drives. The drinks and dinners held in the dry river bed alongside of camp were great with excellent food and house red wine. We enjoyed having dinner with a couple of other guests and our safari guide, Rama. Our last night in camp, the staff made a cake for our 50th wedding anniversary. One really had a sense of being in the real African bush. At night we heard hyaenas calling but always felt safe in our tent which we were escorted to at night. We saw all the Big 5 except for rhinos (which we saw later in our trip) and much other wildlife. Our guide Rama was respectful of the wildlife which is not always the case, especially in areas like the Serengeti where there are so many safari trucks gathered around any siting. Ruaha National Park is definitely a place to visit before it gets too crowded -- it is being marketed heavily so I expect that there will be more crowds in the future.…
From the moment we arrived, greeted by the entire staff singing and playing instruments, to the moment we left four days later, we were made to feel special in this lovely camp. The staff treat all their guests like this and their attention to detail is second to none. Our tent was comfortable and we had the best possible guides - Charles is exceptional in his ability to predict an animal's behaviour and is the best possible teacher, too. Extra special is the drawing together of all the guests each evening, with the managers and guides, for drinks (free of charge), either round a camp fire or for sundowners out in the bush, followed by dinner together round a table on the dry river bed - an opportunity to discuss experiences with other guests and staff. We enjoyed the enthusiasm of the chefs and barman to discuss the excellent food and drinks they produced - Kwihala shandy is a speciality! Our first experience of game here was a parade of baboons in front of our tent; among the most exciting was watching a leopard protect its kill high up in a baobab tree. And the birds! - I counted 125 species in eight days in Selous and Ruaha. We covered a large area, our guides finding some wonderful spots for breakfasts or lunches, and we rarely came across any other vehicles. Highly recommended for anyone seeking the safari experience in an area free of the crowds and really interested in learning about the wide variety of animals and birds - thank you, Kwihala, for a wonderful stay.…
This was my fourth African safari. Two were excellent and one was mediocre, but this camp wins the prize by far. The tents were comfortable with elegant simplicity. The food was fabulous and my celiac diet was accommodated with ease (I had more selection than I do at many restaurants at home - how can a small kitchen in a tent in the bush provide better options than a big city restaurant? I was impressed beyond belief). Above all else was the incredible staff. Friendly and competent. Again, many hotels and restaurants at home could learn a lot from this company on how to provide excellent service. Topping off this amazing staff were the guides. I find it hard to imagine anyone having greater knowledge than our head guide Charles. Sight, sound, and smell are on high alert at all times and his ability to spot even the tiniest details was impressive beyond belief. Add to this his obvious love of learning and teaching, as well as his good communication skills and sense of humour, and you have the epitome of the safari guide. Our group learned so much. To top it all off was Asilia’s philosophy of sustainability and of giving back to the local communities. Most impressive. I will recommend this company to anyone considering a safari and I will be booking any future safari with them. We did in fact do a second safari with Asilia right after and found the same level of commitment. Impossible to go back to anything else after this experience.…
Staying in a tented camp was a highlight for the senses. Hearing the wildlife at night in and amongst where we were sleeping was powerful and brought the trip to life. The food and ambiance was extraordinary and the staff went well out of their way to make this a special experience.
