Unrivalled jaw-dropping views. Dumbe 3 is quite exceptional. The hosts have thought of everything, with a keen eye for detail you will want to stay indefinitely!
Quiet, scenic, relaxing gem. Which provides a beautiful view of the sunrise in the East from your patio (or even your bed).
House was immaculate upon arrival, ground staff were friendly and helpful. Hiking route is clearly marked.
Cannot compliment this property and it's hosts enough!
Remember to bring cash for wood, property has a great fireplace and cosy lounge area.

The cottage no 4 was very privately located and had great views. The set-up is geared toward a romantic get away and the fireplace place with ample wood was well used. We went for a very nice hike via the marked trail and also visited the Kaalvoet Vrou monument located some 800m from the cottage. The only suggestion I have is to have a better and perhaps larger braai available on the patio and also a bit more warm water (larger geyser) to be available while spending time and enjoying some cocktails in the Jacuzzi bath (which is great) as the water gets cold quite quickly.

If you want tranquility, this is the place to go - no neighbours, you are all on your own. Fabulous views, Lots of walks, bike trails, 4x4 trails available for the energetic. Everything is self-catering, therefore, ensure you have everything you need as it a fairly long bumpy dirt road to get to the cottages.

Wow is all my husband and myself can say. Absolutely beautiful spacious accommodation with outstanding views and spectacular sun rises. Peaceful, nobody else around - if you want to relax, unwind and have total isolation, then Dumbe is the place - we stayed in number 4.

We recently booked a weekend away at Dumbe Cottage no.1, hoping to get a bit of snow. Unfortunately there was no snow in sight but it made no difference. The incredible views and stunning chalet more than made up for it.
The 4x4 trail along the old Retiefs Pass was brilliant - tough but doable. And did I mention the views?
All in all, good value for money and the stuff memories are made of.

Situated on the edge of the escarpment, the Dumbe cottages offer some of the most amazing scenery of the whole of the Drakensberg. The cottages are tastefully decorated, super clean, neat and wonderfully quiet. Although only self catering, the experience as a must for all visiting the Drakensberg. The road along the edge of Sterkfontein is passable for most normal vehicles, just enjoy the view and tackle slowly. Can't wait to get back. Thank you Elma and Solly.

My husband and I had the pure and utter pleasure to celebrate his birthday at Dumbe nr 3 from 19 – 22 May 2017.
Dumbe is situated 45 kilometers from Harrismith on the R74. The last part of the road is a gravel road (approximately 12 kilometers). It was quite a bumpy drive with pot holes and lots of rocks but we drove slowly (very). I do not recommend a low clearance/low profile vehicle for this road.
The setting of our cottage with views stretching over the Kwazulu Natal escarpment was magnificent and breathtaking. The cottage was sparkling clean and neat. It was equipped with everything we needed to self cater. The electric blanket on the bed was a real life saver from the cold. Apart from the lovely corner jet bath the chalet also boasted a large shower.
The ambience was utterly romantic and the roaring fireplace at night set the perfect mood. Firewood was available in the chalet at ZAR20.00 per bag. This must be paid in cash at the chalet. Magazines, books and interesting information on the history of Retief pass were available on the coffee table.
Our chalet was very private. The big veranda was the perfect place to relax and soak in the sun (the mountain tops were covered in snow). The serenity and tranquility at Dumbe is perfect to restore and revive body, mind and soul. The starry sky at night was spectacular and a magical sight to behold.
We walked to the “Kaalvoet vrou” (Barefoot woman) monument and the monument that was erected to commemorate the hundred years after the “Groot Trek” of the “Voortrekkers “ which was special and part of our history.
We want to extend our gratitude to the three very special cleaning ladies. Their true and heartfelt friendliness completed our very special experience at Dumbe. The owner, Elma was very helpful and friendly when we requested information about the weather and restaurant suggestions.
Dumbe was the perfect place to celebrate a romantic and unforgettable birthday. We will most definitely be back.

This was our third visit to Dumbe Cottages. First time August 2015. Then May 2017. This time Dumbe 4 in July 2017 for my sixtieth birthday. Only myself and my wife. Dumbe is one of our favorite destinations and can be highly recommended.
Dumbe is serene, very private and o so romantic. It has lovely view down the Drakensberg escarpment. Cottage 4 is beautifully appointed, and has a fireplace and spa bath - a must for romantics. We'll be back, for sure! One can get to Dumbe by sedan, but SUV will be better. 4X4 will be an overkill! A must visit.

The setting is beautiful and the view magnificent. I do however feel that the furnishings and bed linen were not quite four star as it is advertised. The interior is mediocre. The fire place warms up your chalet in a minute. We stayed in chalet 1. In the cold winter months I like to bath and there is just a shower. The kaalvoetvrou monument is within 5 min walking distance. If you enjoy a complete break from everything you will enjoy Dumbe.
