Simon, Cheryl and the staff have renovated and nurtured this lodge into a wonderful, authentic retreat. It oozes charm and friendliness and they have thought of every possible item you could need or desire from umbrellas and mosi cream to delicious toileteries and complimentary jelly babies! We enjoyed the communal dining, great food and wine and the stunning views. With a viewing platform, swimming pool, library and sitting room full of books on local culture and wildlife, there are plenty of areas to while away time in the heat of the day. The owners lead walks into the neighbouring game reserve where we saw, zebra, giraffe, jackel and white rhino. Within an hours drive of the lodge we accessed wonderful walks in the Drakensberg Mountains. If you want to cover a bit of wildlife, the battlefields and some great hiking all from one base, Three Tree Lodge is an ideal location.

We stayed at the Three Tree Hills Lodge as part of a family vacation for three days.
We were very warm welcomed by Melanie and introduced to the fantastic and lovely lodge and its activities.

Each room is represented by its own cabinet, and decorated with an excellent focus on the details. All rooms provide a fantastic view towards the national park, and with good eyes some animals (e.g. Giraffe, Zebra or Rhino) can be spotted.

Beside the lovely rooms, there is a modern pool, an other lounge area and a nice fire place available, and as an absolute highlight a fantastic wine cellar.

The food is very delicious and offered in a high quality, including vegetarian.

The whole team around Cheryl is doing an excellent job to make sure a guest feels comfortable and fully relaxed. Within seconds, we felt being "home" and had our please to chat with the whole staff. We will for sure return to the lodge for a longer stay!

What a treat to be in an establishment where it is clearly apparent that attention to detail, care for their guests, staff and environment are of paramount importance. This is also the first lodge we have been to where the room with disabled access can accommodate our family and not only 2 guests. The quiet, calm beauty you will find here is like no other. You will leave your heart here and have to return to visit it :)

Looking for something different to break the trip down to the Oyster Box Hotel in Umhlanga we stumbled on an absolute Gem! So pleased we decided to spend three nights there!
Simon, Cheryl, Melanie, Ron, Sandy and the entire staff run a wonderful lodge in the heart of the Anglo Boer battle fields and just 30 minutes drive from the majestic Drakensberg mountains in the Royal Natal National Park. The lodge rooms are magic, with views forever, the lodge lounge and dinning room, are welcoming and comfortable. COVID has changed the way you dine, rather than all around a large table, it’s separate tables and careful and considered practices to keep everyone comfortable and healthy. The food throughout our stay, breakfast, lunch and dinner was great.
The property boarders on the Spionkop Game reserve and the well marked walking trails take you close the the fences where game is plentiful. The pool, library and wine cellar provide plenty of options during the day.
We spent a day reliving the battle of Spionkop, one of the bloodiest between the English and the Boers in 1900. Ron as guide and historian had us hanging on his every word, it’s a must!
Our second day was off to hike the Gorge in the National Park, with packed lunch, clear directions and perfect weather we had a day we will not forget.

We will certainly to be going back again and hopefully again in the coming years!

The room in individual cabins is very large with a nice terrace overlooking the hills.
The central lounge and library are very comfortable and large. Lunch with all the other guest jointly meant we met a number of very nice S.African couples with whom we shared dinner the next few days as well. The clearly marked walks around the property give a good chance to explore and meet up with zebra’s and other game. The early morning game walk with the guide brought us in very close proximity with a group of giraffes which was a unique experience. We failed to spot the rhino but the trails showed they were definitely there.
The Battle field tour was impressive. The history and story in itself is quite something but the way it was told and explained by our guide was chilling. A moving experience.
Further a nice pool to enjoy, fireplace outside but also spacious in the lounge for our dinner during a thunderstorm.
Beautiful spot!

We booked for three nights on a friends recommendation and ended up staying for eight nights as were enjoying it so much. You absolutely must do the Boer War Battlefield tour with Ron Gold, you dont have to be an historian to appreciate it. When you arrive at the courtyard your first reaction could be to be slightly underwhelmed as you can only see the outside of the reception and the lounge, but once you are established in one of the rooms which have a brilliant view of Spion Kop or have visited the lounge which is full of African memorabilia and artefacts or the excellent library or the wine cellar, you realise that you are somewhere special. The rooms are comfortable andthe staff very friendly and helpful. The food is excellent. It is a great base for exploring the Drakensbergs as well as the numerous activities that the lodge offers. Very highly recommended and we will certainly return on our next South Sfrican trip.

We spent 3 nights at Three Tree Hill, and loved every minute of our stay! The room was beautiful and supremely comfortable with the greatest view over Spioenkop. The sounds at night lulled us to sleep, while warm days were spent in the swimming pool (very nice and cold) after excursions. We really enjoyed the history tour - so informative and well presented. Horse riding was great too! We couldn't have asked for better food, Christmas Eve and Day were so special with all the small personal touches. Thank you to everyone who made our time at Three Tree Hill Lodge such a magnificent experience.

We had an incredibly wonderful time at Three Tree Hill. It was our first visit to the lodge, and we were absolutely thrilled. There was nothing that could have been better.

The lodge is very authentic and comfortably furnished. The rooms are spacious with a terrace overlooking the Spioenkop Nature Reserve. We were fortunate to see rhinos from the terrace upon our arrival.

The lodge features a large dining room adorned with numerous artworks and antiques, along with a library and a wine cellar that is worth exploring.

Simon, Cheryl, and the entire team—special thanks to Melanie for making our stay even more memorable—are incredibly warm, and you truly feel more than welcome.

We also appreciate the evening gatherings with other guests for sundowners by the campfire and shared dinners at a large table. It was a unique and delightful experience. The food was outstanding, prepared fresh and exceptionally delicious.

We found it thoughtful that guests could borrow binoculars. We joined a bush walk with Simon, an experience not to be missed, where we were lucky to witness rhinos, giraffes, and zebras up close—a dream come true.

It's worth mentioning the team's kindness in washing our car before departure, a gesture we found truly attentive.

As mentioned, we can't imagine a better accommodation and were more than satisfied. 5 stars plus.

Thank you for the unforgettable time!

Gorgeous views of Spionkop and a few nearby trails for hiking where you can see wildlife roaming. I felt very welcomed from the moment I arrived up the long dirt and gravel road. Excellent service and food. I didn't get to use the pool but it looked nice as well. Each morning there was a personal table set up for breakfast and the staff cater to your every need. As a solo traveler I really enjoyed the communal dinner with other guests and having a host each evening to learn more about the country through their personal experiences and immersing myself in a different culture. The lodge had many paintings and relics from the Boer Wars that added a lot of atmosphere to the location. My guide for the battlefield Tony was remarkable; he is extremely knowledgeable about the history of the battle and made a somber, silent, place feel alive even 124 years after the fighting. The on site library was very unique and cool, I found myself spending hours in there reading after dark just fascinated by the history. I do wish there was a way to keep the rooms a little warmer at night in winter, the bed was comfortable and had plenty of blankets but the heater in the room didn't seem to do much of anything.

Everyone at Three Tree Hill is helpful and friendly. The Double Cottage that we had booked was delightful - although it was down a pretty steep hill! The views from the room and balcony were absolutely stunning, and if you cared to take a bath - they were the same. Everything worked well, including the air conditioning and the ceiling fan.
Meals were communal if you liked, with the option to eat alone if you preferred. We chose the communal eating and met some wonderful people and thoroughly enjoyed our evenings.
The food was excellent, if not always to our taste, and they took account of any dietary requirements perfectly. All meals are included in the rate (and they offered to pack up a lunch if you were going out for the day), including a lovely afternoon tea. All beverages are charged.
The pool was difficult to access, down a very steep slope and was evidently unheated, so despite the 30 degree temperatures, we decided not to venture down.
The views from the veranda were breathtaking: a nature reserve - and a telescope is provided so that you can see zebras etc grazing in the distance.
There are various tours that can be arranged from Three Tree Hill and we took 2 battlefield tours. Our guide, Pierre, was extremely knowledgeable and began our first tour with an hour long potted history of SA which put everything into context. His tours were excellent and I would recommend them to anyone interested in the history of the area.
Load shedding was coped with excellently with a lovely candlelit dinner one night. Their generator clicked in when necessary.
I would recommend Three Tree HIll to anyone wanting a relaxing break with a fabulous ambience.

Dear Alan, yes is can be cold. However, typically our winter weather here has little or no rain during the months between April and October, and normally the days have clear blue skies with temps up to 25degC. The nights are usually chilly, with clear skies (and excellent stargazing) and temps dropping to 3-5degC. Making the fireside red wine all th more pleasant! Occasionally one of the bigger cold fronts that hit the cape reaches us and we can have a few days of cool overcast weather. kind regards - Simon
