The last part of the access road from Bergville has many potholes, animals and pedestrians. The chalets are well maintained but access is more suitable for the young and fit - mostly far from then car park and uphill over the lawns - not suitable for wheeled suitcases. Although you have amphitheater views, the bottom part is cut off by overgrown brush. The road near Thendele is badly potholed. Do not rely on the shop except for wood - no ice. The hiking routes are not as well maintained as they used to be

It's difficult to rival the views this little resort offers it's guests perked on a hill overlooking the full Drakensberg Amphitheater, but it's clear the resort are not trying to be a 5* lodging... which isn't a bad thing!

Staying here for 3 nights was pure bliss and makes you really think how little one needs to be happy and enjoy the simple pleasures of life. Top trick: don't arrive with high expectations, and you will be pleasantly surprised.

We were in a 2-bed chalet in the lower camp, which was great as you have an uninterrupted view of the mountains in front of you. Upper camp is perked a bit higher which allows for a more expansive view - but each to their own, overall a great spot!

Unfortunately though our weather was not favourable to braai outside on 1 of the nights, but there is a small oven/stove job that does the trick, as well as a portable gas hob which we ended up using for most meals outside on our porch. There are a few niggles and perhaps a small revamp needed at some stage, but overall a memorable stay! We will definitely return with friends and family.

We stayed at one of the 6-bed cottages in Thendele Lower Camp. It had a fantastic location, far from all other units and beautiful view.
What we liked: the view, the oil heaters in the rooms and the fireplace. The staff were friendly.
What can improve: the chalet is in a terrible state of disrepair - kitchen cupboards are falling apart, fittings not attached properly, bad damp with paint chipping, the beds are old, pillows ultra thin, bedding old and faded, etc.
The bench outside in the garden overlooking the amphitheater leans to one side and will fall over if you sit on it. There is no shower mat and standing in the bath to shower is very slippery (you have to step into the bath to shower - hard for elderly people to do). We were very disappointed by how badly it is maintained, it really needs to be revamped for what they are charging!

It is not good value for money and we won’t stay here again.

On the positive side, the camp has an unbelievable location. The views are majestic all around and onbe is spoiled with too many options for hiking.

On the neagtive side, the condition of the unit we stayed in was shocking We stayed upper camp unit 27. I think the photos tell it all and one could have taken much more photos of the shocking state the unit was in.

The view is wonderful, the chalet not. The rates are expensive for the awful state of the chalet. The toilet roll plastic casing kept popping open, clearly broken, dishes were not clean, the colander missing a handle, the chopping board sticky & unclean. The chalet is poorly maintained - cracks in walls. Braai was broken - missing its base, the heater was broken - missing its wheels. They charge for firewood which is wet
.... They aren't giving value for the money, and simply appear not to care. I've been twice now (2011 & it was in a much better state) but never again.

The Thendele camp has the most breathtaking views of the amphitheatre of the Drakensberg. The bungalows are basic and clean, but the natural beauty of the environment make up for it. There are many hiking trails and outdoor activities. The cascades walking trail is strongly recommended, with waterfalls and natural pools to swim in.

The ONLY good thing about this place is the view.

Based on the star rating and pricing we thought we would be in quite comfortable accommodation. The lower camp unit was very poor, with cobwebs, cockroaches, leaking shower and very cramped.

The staff were quite disinterested. Given that they charge R2000 per night there should be enough funds to keep the units in good shape so the poor condition cannot be excused.

This accommodation is a waste of money and you are better off staying at the nearby mount aux sources.

If you still decide to stay here, ensure you get the upper camp accommodation as it is double the size for a 10% higher price.

We stayed three nights in Thendele Lodge situated right at the bottom of the amphitheatre in August 2014. The lodge was designed to blend it with the environment and you could not see it from the walking paths or from the other accommodation. The roof was covered in grass which blended in well. The Lodge was comfortable with three large double bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms. The beds were a little hard but each room had marvellous views out of huge glass patio doors onto the mountains. The dim lighting was frustrating (all energy saving light bulbs). There was a lovely open fire but the sofas were placed around the large flat screen TV which meant dragging chairs across to be able to sit in front of the fire.
The lodge comes with a cook /house keeper which was a treat.
The main plus of renting the Lodge is the truly fantastic position which surely cannot be surpassed. You are right in the amphitheatre with no sight of any other huts / chalets. There is a lovely garden to sit in and look at birds / or just watch the ever changing mountains. The lodge is a good place to do the many walks into the mountains.
Would definitely return here again.

We were there for three nights. The view of the Amphitheatre and the Drakensberg is so special! Our chalet provided everything that we need. Everynight we had a barbeque and looking at the mountain. Wow! Hiking from here to Tiger Falls, the Cascades, the short Forest Walk and the Thukela Gorge is fantastic. We love this place with a passion and will be back!

This was a highlight of our trip. We stayed here for four nights and felt absolutely relaxed when we left. The view of the amphitheatre was stunning, plenty of walks for all levels, beautiful swimming spots and lots of local wildlife around the chalets. Would highly recommend for those looking for quality self catering accommodation.
