This was our second time at the Cavern and we went for a double celebration of my wife and 2 year old son’s birthdays this Sunday. The first time we had gone for almost 10 days so as a weekend trip we were hoping it would live up to the high expectations our first trip set more than a year ago. This it did! The staff are so friendly and approachable. We asked for a specific hike (Tugela Gorge) and it was posted and advertised as a full day walk (which ended up being a private hike). Sipho, our guide, was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. As a family with young kids we were somewhat nervous about leaving them with the nannies while we went on our hikes but there were no issues and I believe they were the happiest they have been on holiday. The nannies are so well trained and good with the children and we were extremely happy. This is one of the Cavern’s specialties and means the entire family can enjoy their time away and spend quality time, whilst also taking time to do more age specific activities, something that isn’t always available in other resorts.

The catering, as always, was excellent. Walks were inspiring especially Echo Cave which we did in cool and misty conditions on the day we were leaving, but the hotel was more than happy to assist us so we could leave after the hike was done. We were even able to arrange a birthday cake which we took up to enjoy in the cave making for an fun birthday experience for my wife. We left on a high for the drive back after lunch and I’m still on a high from a great trip.

If I had one request/suggestion it would be that WiFi is extended to additional parts of the resort and some of the rooms. My cell signal was pretty poor and it was difficult to do pretty much anything on my phone without going to the dining room/reception area. This can be somewhat frustrating so much of our lives these days is on our phones. This too since there was no tv in our room for some night time entertainment.

All in all a wonderful experience and we look very forward to our next happy return!

Dear 903adamm Thank you for this comprehensive and wonderful review. We are so pleased that, once again, your expectations were met and that the whole family had a special break with us. We look forward to the next visit! We are looking at options of increasing the WiFi coverage but at this stage we may not be able to get signal to every room. With our best wishes, Megan & Hilton

The Cavern generously donated a free weekend to the Kids Hzven golf day as a prize. One of the Kids Haven children won the prize and The Cavern generously gave two chaperones a discount for a family room. The two girls had a marvellous time hiking in the Berg for the first time, standing under a waterfall, horsiding, table tennis, tennis - all for the first time as well. The delicious fine dining cuisine was an eye opener but was soon tucked into. A wonderful place to stay with empowered staff who deliver excellent service.

Dear Jmmacg It is always so heartwarming to be able to reach out and offer a getaway and just wonderful that one of the Kids Haven children won the prize! It's simply special. Fabulous that the two girls had the opportunity of experiencing the beauty of these mountains and the natural environment which we are so fortunate to call home. Thank you to the chaperons that made it all possible! With our best wishes, Megan & Hilton

This was the first on our route Cavern -Cathedral peak -Nambiti game reserve .despite the heavy rain in all three it was a great routing .
Amazingly all three were priced ( in the end) at a similar cost,
Cavern was spectacular , the staff were brilliant, friendly and a great sense of humour which did not detract from their professionalism. The meals were just right for us elderly Brits with a choice of starter , main meal & afters . If you were really hungry one could have All 4 starters & a couple of main meals & all the sweets . The food was extremely good & would do justice in a fine dining restaurant.
We stayed in the superior suites 70-74 , I believe, which had tremendous views . Many thanks to Ibrahim our guide on the “long” walk in the morning despite the flooded paths which he navigated skilfully .
In Hindsight we should have booked at least 3 nights not two

Here for 2 nights, firstly let me say the staff are wonderful, happy smiles all round and seemed genuinely pleased to help.. sadly for us the hillside setting did prove to be difficult, particularly if you walking problems, as most of it is on a slope. To get to the pool is a steep descent. The parking likewise so if you go out it’s a slog from the car park back up to reception then up to your rooms. So not a place for elderly or infirm. The rooms are ok, our bathroom was very small and tight to turn in. There is no WiFi apart from the lounge which I find sad as one can always get WiFi pretty well anywhere nowadays. There is no fridge in the rooms which was a sad surprise, and there is a lack of privacy from one chalet to another.. in adding up, if you don’t mind a more holiday camp atmosphere then this is the place, with tennis courts etc, but if you want a hotel with quiet and privacy outside your room, this is not the place for you. We did enjoy our stay and thank you to the wonderful dining room staff.

Dear Squoppy2 Thank you so much for taking time to review us. One of the wonderful features of the Cavern is that it right in the hills but this makes for many ups and downs which can be tricky to navigate. It might have been better to have booked a superior room or suite which would have been better suited to the more discerning traveller. They are set a short distance away from the main building, overlooking the magnificent indigenous Fern Forest with private patios to enjoy the views, listen to the sounds of forest streams and relax in our mountain wilderness. Each unit is spacious with a TV and bar fridge. The WiFi signal works in-line of sight which makes this challenging with all the protruding hills and trees. But, it is a good escape for many, particularly families looking to get away from screen time. In the future, as the offering improves, we may look at extending the WiFi reach each room. We do know you enjoyed the art work and I was meant to pass on the Auctioneers details. Please let us know if you are still interested. Our best wishes, Megan & Hilton

We booked a 4 night stay at the Cavern in a standard room, which on first accounts looked a lovely peaceful retreat for us in the Drakensberg. Upon arrival we were invited to have lunch in the restaurant or balcony with a view, this is where the problem started.
After getting our buffet lunch we proceeded to sit on the balcony and then to our horror two dogs arrived and started sniffing around the table waiting to be fed. After asking the waiter if this was a regular occurrence he shrugged his shoulders and moved the dogs away. This lasted 10 minutes before they returned. This also happened at the evening meal when one table decided to throw chicken bones for the dog. I informed the restaurant manager about our unpleasant incidents and he said he would tell the owner of the hotel we were not happy. They offered us an upgrade for the remainder of our stay which we refused and left the following morning.
It would appear the owners have 5 large dogs which are all allowed to roam freely in and out of the restaurants and guests are expected to let this happen and say nothing. The staff when asked about this just smile as it’s very obvious they can do nothing.
If you want to eat your food in a kennels, this is the place for you.

Dear Adventure443440 Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts. We are dog lovers and our social media portrays this in abundance ~ #mustlovedogs. The Cavern has always been home to many pets, over many years, and our "Regret No Pets Allowed" does not mean that there are no animals but rather that we have 5 gorgeous dogs and there is no space for more. Most of our visitors enjoy these friendly hounds. They join them on hikes, the children love and pet them and they give warmth to a home. We do encourage people not to feed them because we understand and know that it can become a problem. We did offer you an upgrade because the superior rooms are set away from the main building and away from the animals. But, you chose to go. We apologise that this has infuriated you so. We cannot be everything to everyone but fortunately the vast majority love Gus, Lucy, Orla, Moya and Zinga. In fact, many people return just to see them. Take care, Megan & HIlton

Visited The Cavern for a family getaway. There were three generations and it was perfect for all three. For the small children the facilities were great. The play areas are suitable for all ages and the child minders were quickly favorites. Pretty became a firm friend of the littlies and was warmly greeted each meal time. Pony rides were a daily event and the pool was well used.

For the parents the chance to have “adult meals” was really appreciated as the children were looked after. The food was really tasty and there was no problem to request seconds,or even thirds.

The rooms were clean and comfortable.

Overall a super 5 days. We will definitely be back.

We did not overnight at The Cavern, but did visit their Spa - the Forest Retreat. Nestled deep in a forest you can relax and leave all atress behind as you make your way down the winding path. Small spa, but beautifully appointed. All views are on the trees and forest and the only noises are those of the birds. We had the Forest Relaxation Package (30 min back massage, 30 min foot massage and 30 min facial) I can highly recommend a visit to the Forest Retreat if you are in the Drakensberg area.

Cavern gave us a fantastic green mountain view from our 3 bedroom unit, long mountain hikes with a guide, inexpensive spa services, great food, cheap high quality wine, and excellent personalized service.

The accommodation was spacious with a view of the mountain from our bedroom. All meals plus wine and beer were included and served in the dining room. The food was good and we liked that the staff put on a Zulu show on Saturday night.

There was lots to do such as mountain hiking, a pool, and spa services. My wife and my son had massages and found them to be good and also quite inexpensive.

We went on two long hikes (about 10km) and one short one. The scenery was lovely with many small waterfalls, beautiful flowers like proteas, and stunning green mountain peaks. The hikes started at the resort and had morning tea included.

Recent flooding had caused a potential problem in our unit. The staff talked to us about potentially moving to another unit. While we did not have to move, I was impressed that the owner gave us a nice bottle of wine just to compensate us for having to talk to them about the issue.

Speaking of wine, the Cavern has a fantastic wine cellar where you can buy excellent wine for what were very cheap prices compared to Canada where we live.

Overall we were very impressed. The only concern we had was that the road to get there has many potholes and is not in great shape.

Dear Robin B Thank you for taking the time to review us so comprehensively! We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay at The Cavern. Every now and then, nature plays havoc but we are pleased that it didn't impact on your time with us. And, we will continue to impress upon the authorities the importance of good infrastructure in this tourism region. We see small improvements from time to time but much work is needed. With much thanks, Megan & Hilton

We stayed for 3 nights. Email communication before arrival was excellent. We ran late and they were happy to keep dinner for us...with a complimentary bottle of wine and they gave us a room upgrade. Which made the partially scary drive worth it. We drove at night which was a bad idea as visibility was poor due to the smoke from the controlled fires and the mist from the mountains. There are some damaged roads...in the daylight they are not an issue.

Our cottage room was lovely and big, with a lovely patio with gorgeous views and sounds of the stream and birds. Big bathroom. Bottle of sherry always topped up for an evening nightcap. Our room was also close to a designated parking area which made things easier and we were close to the Forest Spa. Forest Spa is a lovely treat. Couples massage surrounded by forest and forest sounds.
They didn't have any bathrobes which I think is an essential for a hotel that has a spa. Nicer to be able to walk from the room to the spa in a bathrobe instead of clothes.
Some of the upgraded decor in my opinion isn't in line with the style of the venue.

It has a great bar and wine cellar which is very reasonably priced. Only thing is they shut when they feel like it which means you may find the bar closed.

Food was excellent. It is done as a menu which I liked and means there is less wastage and no excessive eating and feels more like you are at a hotel.
The service was good, some weak points with some staff being slow or unobservant specifically waiting staff.

Overall, the resort is in a beautiful location, with lots of walks right outside the door plus very close to the National Drakensberg Park Gate and other activities.

We highly recommend it and will be back.

Dear SusanaJose Thank you so much for the lovely review. Super that you enjoyed your stay and would recommend The Cavern. Your observations will be shared with our team and we value the suggestions and ideas. We do play around a bit with the decor and try and redo spaces every 4 years. It keeps the place interesting for our many return clients and we hope the pops of colour help brighten the spaces. Our access road remains a concern but continual interaction with the Department of Transport and even participation with the Parliamentary delegation has seen slow action with work beginning on the Oliviershoek Pass this week. We will keep the pressure on as this remains a vital link to the Drakensberg region. Thank you so much for your time. Our very best wishes, Megan & HIlton
