One will need a 4x4, preferably with low range to currently access the lodge; apparently the road is due to be upgraded, which for most people will be great, for those of us who enjoy roughing it, the access road was great.
The accommodation is excellent, clean, private and situated with awesome views. For birdwatchers and hikers, the place is a dream.
The owners were top of everything, yet totally unobtrusive, giving us the solitude and peace we were looking for. Next time I go back there will be for longer than a weekend.

The stay at Toplodge was just perfect and went way beyond our expectations. The accommodation was so cosy and inviting, perfect to get back to after a day of doing some of the hikes that are on offer. There are various hikes to go on which are really exciting and beautiful. There is a dam to take a refreshing swim in, Eland to spot and endless views of the Berg. Toplodge was peaceful and fun and definitely a place we want to go back to for longer than 3 days! It brought us back to what matters.

An adventure. A fun 4x4 off road to get to the lodge in the Northern Drakensberg, in the distance you see three cottages, surrounding the three cottages are nothing but mountains and the sky.
Everything Adriaan and I needed to bring was our food, hiking equipment and a good read and our CHILL. The cottages was fully equipped with the basic needs.
we got to experience hot summers days and a stunning thunder storm where we used the indoor fire place.

We absolutely loved our stay at Toplodge. Driving in Gavin's old Landy up to the lodge was one of the highlights. I could have listened to his stories all day. I would definitely recommend this option unless you are an experienced 4x4 driver.

We stayed in Chestnut Cottage, which was everything we hoped for. Perfect for a couple seeking to get out of the rush of city life to relax and unwind. The sky deck was awesome and we used the outdoor shower a lot.

We enjoyed doing the trails when the weather allowed us. We found them doable, not a complete walk in the park, but also not too difficult.

We will definitely be back to enjoy the peace, tranquility and the beautiful views.

Thank you to Gavin and his wife for your amazing hospitality and for the most wonderful time at Toplodge.

See you again soon!

Thanks for your very kind words, Jenna. It always gives us great pleasure to know that Toplodge has given our guests as much pleasure as it gives us. Thank you for the immaculate condition in which you left the cottage - you and Dave will always be welcome!

If you are looking for a place to get away from all the noise and people in a city, to take a moment to stop, breathe out the chaos and breathe in fresh air and peace there is no place better than Top Lodge. The surrounds are beautiful and you can be happy just sitting and looking at the mountains or you can explore some of the hikes in the property. To note, the hikes aren’t hard but there can be some spots that can feel uncomfortable if you aren’t used to hiking or scrabbling down one or two relatively steep declines so would be mindful of this if one is mobility impaired but manageable otherwise. Overall the stay was wonderfully restful and wish I could have stayed for a month. Can’t wait to go back!

We had a very peaceful relaxing weekend at Toplodge and would recommend it to anyone needing to get away from the daily grind. We parked our vehicle on arrival and didn't get in again until departing. There are some wonderful hikes on the farm but the best was to sit and enjoy the view and the tranquility of the place. We were both revitalised after our stay. Lots of Peace and Quiet!

Toplodge was great. We stayed in 1 of the 3 houses on the property, all well kitted out with fantastic inside fire places. The accommodation was very comfortable and everything worked. Excellent walks on the property, some sections fairly challenging though. This is a place to go and relax.

"It is in your power to withdraw yourself whenever you desire. Perfect tranquillity within consists in the good ordering of the mind, the realm of your own,” (Marcus Aurelius) & with a little bit of help from this amazing little getaway.......... TOPLODGE

Right in the beautiful Northern Drakensberg mountains, we made our abode for the weekend.

We could not have asked for a more relaxing & peaceful weekend away.

It started off with a 4x4 trail in your typical tough old school land rover with our fantastic host Joan Everitt, who drove like a champion up into the mountains with the most awe-inspiring views. Once dropped off at our quaint little cottage we started the braai, got a few cold ones out and took it all in.
The fireplace was roaring both nights as it gets a wee bit chilly, although stepping outside we were privileged with an awesome view of the stars!

Over the weekend we saw incredible bird life, wild life and some of the most spectacular views that I've ever seen.

The most rejuvenating weekend I've ever had....

Thank you to Gavin & Joan Everitt for hosting us. It truly was a great experience.

We cannot wait to come back and visit!

We stayed at TOP Lodge in April this year and it was awesome! We didn’t have a 4x4 so Gavin gave as a ride the last 4 km. Do not even think about driving this road in a normal car. During our 4 nights stay he gave us a ride to our car and back whenever we wanted. That was really nice of him. Even though our plan initially was to go hiking in the close by Royal Natal Park at least 2 days, we ended up going only one day since we preferred to stay at TOP Lodge and enjoy the silence and nature there. The cottages are really nice and comfy. We used the fireplace every evening since it was starting to get cold. The cottages are fully equipped and we didn’t miss a thing. There are some hiking trails at the farm which are nice for a short hike. There is also a 2 hours trail but we preferred to lie in the sun, listen to the birds and enjoy the view. We would definitely stay there again since it is the perfect place to get away from all the city stress!

...this is the place to be - Top Lodge is simple surrounded by lovely mountain views. Quiet and secluded as it is only accessible to residents only and also due to the difficult route getting up there, it is ideal for those looking for complete privacy and tranquility.

The cottage is not a 'basic' cottage - it has a well equipped kitchen as well as an outdoor braai. The bedding is of good quality. The host, Gavin, has also thoughtfully provided a set of quilt if one wishes to lis outside on the grass, just to enjoy being outdoors. And when it gets chiilly outside, the fireplace and ample firewood will make it warm and cosyinside.

There are many easy short hikes to enjoy around the area without having to venture further. We enclose some pics of the views around the cottage. And if you are interested to venture further, the Royal Natal National Park is just 15 mins drive away. There, you can attempt the famous Gorge Walk which only takes 5 hours, and is manageable if you leave the cottage early in the day. We also drove to the Sentinel Peak and did a short hike to enjoy the views of the Drakensberg Mountain. Gavin is always so kind and obliging to accommodate our requests to pick us up and drop us back to the cottage; and was very flexible in the timings too.

We would love to stay here again if we come back to this part of South Africa during our travels.
