Visited for a week day evening meal. Group of 20. Place was quiet but we were mesmerised by the beautiful setting and idyllic atmosphere as soon as we walked in.

Service for drinks and food was quick. Food came within 25 mins. Best rump steak I’ve ever had! 20 clean plates and full stomachs by the end of the night.

Definitely worth a visit!

There is a lot good to be said of our stay, the rondavel huts were charming and while a bit outdated, well-maintained. The rooms were clean and equipped with air conditioning and a television. Our friend's hut did not have hot water and the free wifi does not extend to the rooms, it's only available in the main dining area. The main dining / bar area is delightful and we enjoyed a great meal there on our one night stay. On the negative side, our stay was a bit uneven in that they allowed us to book a room on a day they were "technically closed" (they're only open 3 days a week which we did not realize) but didn't fully inform us at the time of the booking. When we arrived, they advised that while we could sleep there, the restaurant, bar, etc. were all closed (and there is nothing else nearby for kilometers). Our small group pleaded and the host (assuming it was the owner as he lived on the property) advised he'd open for us, put some beer and wine on ice and offer us 3 selections for dinner. Another person told us we'd be served dinner at 4pm and we'd have to eat in our rooms because they were closed and we couldn't dine in the restaurant area, when we balked at that, the owner appeared and said..."no, no, no...stay here in the restaurant area as long as you like". So in the end we had a good result, but the overall experience was a bit uneven. Best to book and stay on a day that they are fully / officially open and I'm sure you'll have a great experience.

We booked for one night's stay on our way to the South coast of KwaZulu-Natal.

We were never informed that the cabin that we would have to stay in didn't look anything like on the website. We would have slept in one of the two tin-roofed houses near the dam.

The cabin was dirty and dusty. The toilet didn't flush and there were only three cups and the cabin was a four sleeper. Also the restaurant wasn't open and there were no places nearby for approximately 25 to 35 kms to get something to eat for dinner.

After we went to have a chat with the person who welcomed us, he replied that he was sorry to hear that we didn't want to make use of the cabin. He also said that he would only transfer our deposit to us if there was someone who would want to rent the cabin that night. Otherwise he would not be able to refund us.

We weren't even offered one of the other cabins that is shown on the website. Needless to say, we were not pleased with the service.

My wife and I stayed over at Bingelela Lodge (8 February 2024) on our way to the South Coast. We opted for the scenic R74 via Oliviershoek Pass instead of the busy N3 via Van Reenen. Just before reaching Bergville, you will find Bingelela – a mere 100 or 200 meters from the road. A beautiful and peaceful setting amongst large Eucalyptus trees. We had an awesome time with really great food from a great menu. Ask Paula about their specialities). Bingelela has a great ambience, great hosts (Joss and Paula) and a great wine list – a must visit!

We had made a short term reservation at Bingelela for a Saturday night stay during low-season, which is also the "cold" season. This lodge is completely misrepresented on their website and not worth your consideration. After arriving we decided to first eat lunch and relax in their courtyard. A pleasant young man served attended us and after a short while served us various fine dishes - so far so so good! Then when it was time to check into our rooms, the surprise was big when we saw what was advertised as "the perfect spot to kick up your feet, relax and enjoy the splendor of our country retreat". We were presented below standard, run-down and cold rooms that were totally unacceptable for a price tag of $100. We then asked for the manager and were eventually led to meet with the owner himself. A rude, insistent man which was everything else but the friendly people we have met in South Africa until then. We do not recommend anyone to stay at Bingelela because the quality of accommodation does not pare with the price.

I recently travelled to the Drakensberg with friends who use to live there. I was so excited as I've heard only good things about that part of the world. On our way through to the Central Drakensberg, we stopped off in Bergville for Sunday lunch at Bingelela on recommendation.

The restaurant was busy and understaffed with only two very stressed staff members waiting tables, so service was slow. Furthermore, I was surprised to see dogs allowed in the dining area which I later learned belonged to the owners who clearly find this acceptable in their establishment. I'm not sure if South Africa is an exception, but this surely goes against Health and Safety/Hygiene regulations? I'm an animal lover but was completely put off by this, even more so when one of their puppies urinated under our table and was jumping up against us while we were eating.

After alerting a staff member, it took about 30 minutes to get someone to clean the urine, yet the dogs were not removed and no apology was forthcoming, which I found completely unacceptable. I was so disappointed but moreover, disgusted by the blatant arrogance of the owners. When you're paying those prices to dine, the last thing you want to worry about is dog urine, dog hair and heaven knows what else to be around your food. I asked our waitress to call the owner, who conveniently disappeared.

Not wanting this to ruin the rest of our trip and mar the beauty of the Drakensberg, we begrudgingly paid our exorbitant bill and left. I then went online and looked up the establishment to get a contact number to put in a formal complaint and was surprised to find, amongst others, a website set up by an American who had what I deem to be a nightmare experience.

I was appalled and shocked after reading this - stunned at the owners view that they are untouchable. Looks like we had a narrow escape. Sadly, I will never support or set foot there again and advise you to do your research online before considering staying or dining at Bingelela. Such a shame as the food and setting is good.

Response from bingelela Lodge b, Manager at Bingelela Lodge
Responded 17 Feb 2014
Hi Meridith, Thank you for your review. We apologize for not resolving the issue while you were at our restaurant and will do our best in the future. The pup Vino is currently still being trained on manners, this will come right soon I assure you. After speaking with the owners, the team and myself together with the owners will do our best to ensure that the dogs are not in the restaurant while customers are dining. We have employed new waiters, so service should be back to normal and the owners and myself will be able to pay attention to finer details again. Once again the owners, team and myself would like to offer our sincere apologies and hope to see you again. Kind regards, The Bingelela Team

We had a last minute stopover in May and were given what I would describe as the worst accommodation I have stayed in for a traveller. We were given a rondavel that upon first opening the door gave off the foulest odour I have ever smelt. we discovered the plug hole in the shower is higher than the rest of the floor so the dirty water does not run out but lies there until it is mopped giving the place a dank odour. The small lounge has a tv and fireplace but no wood and the brochure states clearly if you want a fire you need to "basically get back into your car and travel into Bergville and buy wood as they do not supply.
There was no milk with the coffee and tea in the room and no hairdryer for a traveller. The place is so basic the curtain rails were skew. Curtains completely see through. If you closed the one in the toilet it was so long that it hung in the toilet. There was a very primitive rickety staircase up to a mezzanine level with a bed. If you were a tall person you would need to stoop.
No thought has been put into the accommodation. It was freezing cold and we wanted to go and sit in the bar and have a warm drink next to the fire but hey! Guess what patrons were merrily smoking in there AGAINST THE NO SMOKING LAWS so we sat in the cold on the open veranda next to the pool until it started to rain and the smokers had started to leave. The only good thing was the food.
Sorry guys we will definitely not be back. Did contact owners but have had no feedback. Not important to them I suppose one traveller's opinion doesn’t make a difference.

Away from the hustle and bustle of One Stops, this was the perfect place to stop for lunch after hiking for 5 days from Mnweni. The food was amazing (pizza's are a definite recommendation) and atmosphere is relaxed with adorable dogs all around lazing about.

The service was slightly disappointing, with waiters taking away unfinished drinks and not being quite so friendly. But other than that...great place to stop!

We went there for an evening dinner since we stayed in Drakensbergen. This place is really a hidden gem!!! Also pleasant to do with kids. The best food we ate in that region and above all, very friendly staff.

"Request the one-level chalet's, they are all the same price. They are a lot more spacious and comfortable, with more modern finishings (glass shower doors opposed to clammy shower curtains)."
