I stayed at Hlalanathi Drakensberg resort for 4 nights during October 2020. It was a very positive experience overall.
Firstly I had made a mistake with my rushed booking by selecting a chalet with 4 beds instead of 5. The night guard immediately made a plan and organised me a bigger chalet for the night (we arrived late).
The views were simply breathtaking!
The super tube was a load of fun and was switched on daily between 10h30-15h30 despite only a few people using it.
All the staff were friendly and professional. (Reception, guards, cleaners)

The restaurant was not up and running due to Covid-19. The main swimming pool I found to be a touch murky or over-chlorinated at times but the staff were very receptive to my recommendations about this.

Hlalanathi is well situated close to Tower of Pizza (which is an excellent pizza place) and other fun attractions like All out Adventures and the horse riding at Montusi lodge.

A great family destination.

The cottage was clean, well maintained and staff were friendly. Unfortunately we had no hot water when we first arrived but this was sorted out quickly by the friendly staff. Unfortunately the view was very smoggy due to the fires. It wasn’t busy at all so I would have expected a discount in those seasons when things were slow. R5800 is a lot for a weekend away. Rather decrease your price this time of the year to encourage more visitors. Also the road between Bergville and Winterton is very bad!

We stayed in Chalet 2. Absolutely spectacular view of the amphitheater. 10 mins away from the Royal Natal Park. Staff service was very hood. The accommodation was sufficient. Unit needs serious upgrading especially the bathrooms. Bathrooms were actually disgusting. We hardly had hot water to shower. Couches smelled of sweat. Kitchen had everything you need. Cleaning service everyday. The restaurant was closed which I felt should have included a daily rate discount. Facilities are mediocre. All in all the view made up for all the shortcoming. With a little bit of tlc this resort could be really nice.

After viewing this property online we booked a two sleeper chalet for 3 nights. The pictures were great and showed an amazing view of the mountains from the comfort of our patio. When we arrived our room was not yet ready and we were advised to go have a bite to eat at the restaurant until it was (2 hours later!) we eventually could check in and when we were told how to get to our chalet we were a bit confused as it was behind the camping area. It ended up being their garden cottage which was half the size of every other 2 sleeper chalet (for the same price!) with absolutely no view expect the back of the house in front of us. Our "braai area" was two very old broken chairs which did not conform with the rest of the resort. When we went to management to see how to rectify the situation she advised us we should have phoned to book as they don't control the online bookings.Needless to stay we left after the first night and we were VERY lucky to find alternate accommodation nearby (which was amazing!). This was very stressful as there is no signal or wifi opportunities at Hlanlanathi and being the festive season most places are booked months in advance. We definitely won't be recommending or returning.

Let's start with the positives. Lovely camp with friendly staff. The views are stunning. But that is if you can look past all the false advertising they are producing. First thing you see on their website is the supertube. What they don't tell you there is that is only turned in when there are 10 or more people available. So I went there to enjoy it, but could not because of this rule they refrained from stating on their website. The other pool on the property is murky and not crystal clear like you would expect from a resort like this. So I ended up taking my kids to the kiddies play area. What a hazard. The one trampoline has holes in it, and the other one is missing quite a lot of springs. The roundtable thing is broken. So I walked out to the outside play area. luckily most of that was in a working order. Made a turn on the golf course. The waterfall there was full of litter and the water dirty. And all of a sudden it was very difficult to keep enjoying the beauty around you. And all you started seeing was all the things wrong. I would definitely not recommend it. Especially not if you have small children you want to entertain. Drakensville is much better.
I was really disappointed in the overall state of Hlalanathi. So sad as it is jewel.

We arrived to play a game of golf on a Tuesday.
Quoted over R1000 for 3 of us to play 9 holes with 2 carts.
Not another player on the course and when we enquired if any better rate for 9 holes we were told as non-residents, that was the rate.
We left as we felt the cost was not justified for 9 holes, mid-week, winter and out of season.

This is my second time to visit South Africa and my second time to stay at Hlalanathi. I was in a Toyota 4x4 pickup with a rooftop tent. Once again I stayed at site 51 which provided a private ablution facility and an absolutely spectacular view with excellent separation from other sites. It is also conveniently close to the Royal Natal National Park.

In contrast to my last visit, the restaurant seemed to have a new/different owner. The food was tasty, although I was tending towards beer and appetizers. The only problem I had was with payment, as there were frequently problems with processing credit cards. That would not bother me except my bank had locked up my account when I tried to make an ATM draw on my first day in South Africa, so I was careful about spending cash.)

This resort and the Drakensberg range are my favorite places in South Africa.

We stayed at campsites 1 & 2. The campsites are clean, and well maintained. And the view is spectacular!

The ablutions are well maintained, clean, and have sufficient toilet paper.

The swimming pools were both clean and in good condition.

There were some extremely rowdy guests (20+) drinking alcohol, playing loud music, and causing a nuisance. The resort tried to calm and quiet them (but you know how alcohol affects partygoers). Instead of just leaving us to suffer in the noise, Hlahlanathi were kind enough to move us into alternative accommodation far away from the noise at no additional cost!

We will definitely be returning here! Would recommend to anyone who enjoys camping, with a short drive to hike in the northern berg.

The most disgusting meal I’ve had. I ordered the pepper steak pie which they said was delicious and home made. It cost R120. So I thought it be everything they said it would be. When it arrived I was confused.. it was 3 triangles of pastry with no sign of pepper steak. The pepper steak was hidden under the pastry, 5 little pieces of beef smothered in what tasted like a packet of pepper sauce. My son ordered the Nachos and has been vomiting all afternoon .

I have been coming to this resort for almost 40 years and it continues to be my happy place! A trip home to SA is not complete without a stay here. The campsites are well maintained and the views from the front row are incredible. There is so much activity to keep kids busy and a bar and restaurant if you dont feel like cooking or want to meet other adventurers. There are many gorgeous hikes nearby as well as mountain biking or horseriding. We also recommend eating at the Tower of Pizza down the road. Will keep returning here every chance I get. Highly Recommend !
