Moolmanshoek is situated in the Witteberg mountain range, between Ficksburg and Rosendal, Eastern Free State, South Africa. Do you long to escape for a while from the city noise and stress? Are you seeking rest for your soul, a peaceful environment, or that ideal setting for your wedding, for team building or a conference? The reserve was declared a Natural Heritage Site (No 199) in 1994, mainly because of the rare Mountain Bamboo that grows in the valley. Come and share this piece of Paradise with us for a few days. Take a leisurely stroll across the valley floor, go on a relaxing game drive or explore the reserve on horseback or by horse cart. Our SA Boerperd and Endurance Arab horses are born and bred in the valley, where more than 300 horses make Moolmanshoek their home. It is our hope that the uniqueness and splendour of our surroundings will be as inspiring to you as it has always been to us. We believe that Moolmanshoek is:A feast for the eyes, rest for your soul and firewood for the times ahead! It is our privilege to be stewards of more than 3 300 hectares of the breathtaking Moolmanshoek valley. The Witteberg Mountains surround the valley in the shape of a horseshoe (with Visierskerf peaking at 2407m above sea level) feeding several mountain streams in the valley floor below. This basin is home to a variety of game that include Springbuck, Black Wildebeest, Blesbuck, Zebra, Eland, Gemsbok and many others that are historically indigenous to the area. More than 230 bird species can be seen in the reserve, while a wide variety of plants grow on the mountain slopes and in the beautiful wooded ravines.Under the skilled hands and vision of the owner, Willie Nel, the once productive farm was transformed and developed into a game reserve and conservation area. It was later declared a private nature reserve. You are invited to visit us and revel in the breathtaking natural beauty and tranquillity; the rich variety of wildlife, flora and birdlife in an unspoiled mountain environment. Explore the reserve on horseback, go walking alongside streams and dams, or enjoy fly-fishing in clear spring water. Follow one of our three hiking trails or various day walks and renew your mind and soul. Challenge yourself with abseiling, a 4X4 drive or climbing one of the peaks.

Detailed Reviews
I had a wonderful visit with 2 friends for my first time in Africa. The service from all the staff was exceptional and I have to mention that the chef was great and I hadn't expected such an amazingly high standard of cuisine. The room was gorgeous (and I loved the bathroom pipework used creatively as part of the design) and the views of the horses coming in and out of the paddocks was a special treat every day, when I sat on my balcony area with a cup of tea.
The spectacular scenery and high standard of care of the garden and surrounding areas was part of the luxury as we sat for breakfast or relaxed on the verandahs. I loved the riding and my first outings on a Boerped (especially Albert, who looked after me when I rode out) and I felt very secure with our lovely guide. I liked everything and felt not just a tourist but also a houseguest by all the people I met. I really hope to come again, there was nothing that I did not enjoy from the weather to the wild animals to the birds, sounds and skies. Thankyou. xxx

The activities and horse riding is truly magnificent. Setting is spectacularly beautiful and overall a recommended place to go. I was however disappointment in miscommunication between staff and us as the guests and how final billings and discounts and fees were handled. The staff is friendly and the food was good and portions are huge. The kids were thoroughly entertained outdoors and plenty to do. I do however think rooms could have been serviced a bit better, guests can be better informed on timeframes and costs for activities and dinner should be a cancellable option and not be billed if not used and not included in daily room rate.

I had a fantastic stay at Moolmanshoek. The horse riding is one of the best I have ever had, but it looks also like a great place for hiking. Easy to see a lot of game that just roam around. I also loved the refreshing natural pool (which is actually a good size swimming pool in the middle of the meadows, with natural (fresh) running water coming into it). The setting of the lodge is stunning, and it's nice just to walk around the property, take time on a bench enjoying the nature. All the staff were fantastic, from the staff at the stables and guides to the staff for the rooms and restaurant. You feel at home and free to enjoy life, while staff are there when you need them. The food is great, the sundowners just fantastic. I look forward to coming back.

Following the insistent recommendation by a close friend we went and spent (unfortunately only) 2 nights at Mollmanshoek Private Game Reserve near Foerisburg.
Once arrived via tar roads with quite a few potholes and 20 km of dirt road (the alternate gravel route is much shorter) we arrived in a little paradise: what a peaceful and inspiring location, great service and attention by owners and staff alike.
While my wife is still on cloud number 7 from her outing on horseback I spent my time walking all over the amazing property.
We were also treated to a game drive by the amazingly knowledgable owner who not only shared his broad knowledge on flora and fauna but also the astonishing history of the farm and its current and previous owners.
if there is one regret is is our limited time we were able to spend due to flight schedules and that we did not know about the amazing place much earlier.
Moolmagnshoke is definitely on our list of things to do with more time and leisure in the near future.

Lovely. Although I think children should not be allowed to roam the premises almost non stop with a mechanical go cart. It dampens the natural tranquility some what, but I believe that was an unwanted once off by guests. Keys for the room doors and a save would maybe also be a good idea, so that it is not necessary to carry your valuables along when going for walks in nature. That said, it remains a wonderful place to visit.

I only stayed at Moolmanshoek for one night, which wasn't long enough for this stunning place! The farm is beautiful and tranquil with horses everywhere - the perfect getaway from the city. What impressed me the most, was the hosts' hospitality and the fact that the owner genuinely cares whether his guests are enjoying their stay. I had a flat tyre upon arrival, but the owner and a friendly farm worker immediately changed the tyre for me. The owner also checked on me during dinner and breakfast the next morning - he even drew a map for me to ensure I took the shortest route to Ficksburg for a new tyre. The chef prepared a delicious 3 course dinner for only myself at short notice, and the breakfast was a proper big farm breakfast. I would definitely love to go back to Moolmanshoek with my family and friends!
Tip: If you don't have a bakkie or SUV, ensure that you have enough time to drive slowly on the R26/R70 (potholes) and the gravel road to Moolmanshoek. Also make sure you drive to the main big entrance gate - the GPS mistakenly took me to a back entrance.

Moolmanshoek is a wonderful place - an amazing valley full of horses and game surrounded by beautiful mountains. It is like being in a different and very peaceful world where one can get their batteries recharged and forget about daily life's problems.
There are plenty of activities possible. We enjoyed going up the mountains to see the sunrise as well as cycling, horse riding and walking to the pool to get refreshed.
The rooms are very nice and comfortable. We were every day surprised by the nice room service who offered cookies and sweets.
The service is very educated and friendly and the food just amazing. Everybody was very welcoming and helpful. We enjoyed our stay so much and are looking forward to come back again.

We had a wonderful stay at Moolmashoek.
You just need to take a look around and everything you will see is just stunning.
We enjoyed the activities as we have done some 4x4 as well as some horse riding. And what a great experience to ride surrounded by all this game. The staff is great and the owners are very welcoming.
Also, we were very surprised by the diners, worthy of a 4-star restaurant and serving their own meat. Having 2 young children we can also say that it is a very kid-friendly place.
We would definitely love to come back.

Moolmanshoek is an unique place with unique mountains. The surrounding mountains are always an unforgettable refreshment for your soul. And now I have also seen the variety of animals on the farm and the love it is cared with. The farm is well kept and whether you are camping or staying in the rooms, you will experience the farm as an unforgettable experience. The sandstone buildings are part of the heritage of the Free State and here you can live it. I have twice participated in the "Four Peaks" mountain race in 2007 and 2008 and therefore has seen it from there as well. Congratulations!

This is one of the major highlights of my year. We have never been disappointed. The riding is amongst the best in the world on beautifully trained horses and Wiseman and his team our excellent horseman.
Mafie's attention to detail is consistent. From Sundowners in the mountains, picnic lunches, water/coffee stops after long canters.
The chef is fantastic and every meal a gourmet delight.
The accommodation is clean and comfortable.
I can't wait for next year

Good day David
Thank you for your interest in Moolmanshoek.
The Lodge is 2 km from the campsite. We do have two braai lapa's for campers to use and then we have fireplaces on the ground as well. You can sit around the campfire with most of them. There is no supplies at the campsite, only wood.
