What is Travellers’ Choice?
Tripadvisor gives a Travellers’ Choice award to accommodations, attractions and restaurants that consistently earn great reviews from travellers and are ranked within the top 10% of properties on Tripadvisor.
Imagine staying in some of the world’s most undiscovered, pristine environments. Completely private and removed from the rest of the world. Where authenticity of the experience, without compromising on standards, is the key. Where there is a philanthropic goal of both protecting the environment and giving back to the local community. Azura offers some of Africa’s ultimate private luxury hideaways for just a discerning few to discover. Privately owned and managed, our hotels are small and personalised, with award-winning 'eco-chic' villas, delicious local cuisine, and a whole range of unique experiences to enjoy. The Azura team is ready to welcome you, as they love to go out of their way to make every visitor's stay special. Our core philosophy is that each day should be different, and that we ‘wow’ you in some way during your stay with us. We are very proud of our guestbook, which is full of comments from happy guests, many of whom return to stay with us time and again.
Azura Benguerra is truly a beautiful hotel. Each villa is beach facing and their location is such that they are very private and quiet. They are surrounded by island vegetation, and you meander all a series of shell pathways to the restaurant and reception. Whilst the location feels like a magical desert island it is the staff that makes your experience really memorable one. It starts when you gently touch down by helicopter and are greeted with a warm, jovial and smiling group of staff including Olivia, Agostinho (my Mozambiquan host) and Amos (the hotels GM). What an exceptional team this is! They greet you by name from day one and make you feel as if you have come to stay at your best friend’s house for week. It’s the individual touches that set this hotel apart from all the other hotels that I have visited over the years. It’s the handwritten letter in your room, the fully stocked homemade cookie jar and the fresh fluffy pillows on the bed. The rooms are cool, gentle and spacious with luxurious bathroom soaps and shampoos from Rain. The food in the week that I was there was varied, fresh, local and beautiful prepared and presented. I kept ordering their Mozambiquan prawns which were some of the bests I have ever tasted. Agostinho was always on hand and was usually one step ahead of me. If Robinson Crusoe is still looking for his man Friday Agostinho, is it! Try the Peri Peri Beach Club lunch if you can it’s an experience you think about long after you left. I tried the scuba diving, snorkelling, Doha cruise and Island drive all expertly delivered by Pablo. Then after dinner one night Dawson having a fascinating star gazing evening pointing out stars and distant planets through a high-resolution telescope. This is the sorted of hotel you really don’t want to talk about simply because you want to keep all for yourself. To the management team and all the staff congratulations on creating a unique ten-star experience!!!! …

I highly recommend Azura. The staff were so warm and welcoming. The rooms are spacious and the facilities are incredible. The staff went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable and we’re SO sweet with our kids. We can’t wait to go back again.

Our stay at Azura was the most wonderful we could ever hope for during our honeymoon. Amazing service, super welcoming personnel who spoiled us every day, great selection of delicious food and drinks. The great list of activities offered to guests allowed anyone to fill their days, if they wanted to, but one could also decide to stay at home and relax at their pool or make use of the spa. As part of the activities, we loved exploring Paradise Island and snorkelling surrounded by beautiful fish and turtles. We can’t wait to be back!

We had a wonderful time on this beautiful island. The staff looked after us so well and the food , drinks and hospitality were excellent. The accommodation was vast and extremely comfortable with a large plunge pool and lots of shade. We enjoyed the Island hopping excursion with a great picnic and also the snorkelling amongst lots of tropical fish and the occasional turtle and small shark. Our ‘butler’ Carlos was fantastic and also Paulo looked after us really well when we were out on the boat excursions particularly as people new to snorkelling. Back at the resort Amos, Nelson, Olivia, Sara and Dawson organised everything for us and in addition to the boat excursions we really enjoyed the spa and stargazing. The concert put on by the local school (built by Azura) was a real treat and the enthusiasm and joy of the children just amazing. Thank you to everyone at Benguerra for looking after us so well.…

Amazing in every way. The setting is idyllic, the sand really is that white and the water that turquoise. Food and drink delicious. Best of all is the quality of the Azura staff and the flawless service. The host system is excellent (we wanted to take Bernard and Angela home with us), constant attention to detail, every need met before you knew you had it, and always with such charm and huge smiles. An exceptionally well run hotel, managed by a highly visible and engaged team led by Amos and Olivia. Thank you to all, I’d be back tomorrow if I could.

This was one of THE most magical experiences we have ever experienced. From the Helicopter ride, the FOOD, the hospitality and the beautiful sunsets. Everyone on the island is so kind-hearted and informative. I honestly believe that each person should at-least go experience Azura once. Thank you to Olivia, Hassane and everyone else. We will definitely see you again.

What can we say about Azura Benguerra? Besides from the obvious that this island is paradise personified, the villas, the staff, the sheer attention to detail that goes into making the experience for each individual as perfect as can be is just second to none. The helicopter ride from Vilanculos will leave you speechless, particularly if you haven't experienced the Indian Ocean before like we hadn't. You will be greeted with warmth and feel at home right away. Our beach villa was beautiful. Kept immaculately clean and our host organised multiple special breakfasts, lunches and dinners throughout our 12 night stay. The food here is superb, with individually crafted menus to suit all tastes and dietary requirements. We visited the local school during our stay which was heartwarming and a must-do, we went whale watching and were fortunate to see humpback whales and dolphins, we rode horse on the beach, went snorkelling, danced with the local children, had a private beach picnic on paradise island (a small uninhabited island nearby accessible by boat), went on an island drive, ran up and down the sandunes, saw crocodiles, watched a local football game, went paddleboarding, kayaked, went on a sunset dhow cruise, had a couples massage in the beautiful spa - it's safe to say we FULLY immersed ourselves into Benguerra Island and made friends for life with many of the staff. It was my husband's birthday whilst we were there and they organised a private beach ceremony at sunset so that we could do our wedding vows all over again - a moment we will treasure forever. Thank you for helping us create memories for life and giving us everything we could have dreamed of and more in a honeymoon.…

Beautifully luxe appointed villa, superb service, on an unspoilt island. We were treated like royalty by staff that went out of their way for us, and got to completely relax. The snorkeling (coral, turtles, diversity of life) was excellent.

Excellent staff .Very respectful and polite . The food was very flavoursome and tasty. More music and more activities should be offered. Some entertainment at night during dinner time would be perfect . Everything was beautiful and serene . Definitely would recommend this island to my family and friends .

This was the loveliest resort, beautiful beach, peaceful and gorgeous, the people were amazing, as was our time there. The room was perfect for us - there were others with larger pools etc, but this did us perfectly for what we needed We did a snorkel trip to Two-Mile Reef, which was lovely, there was just 4 of us on the boat, so felt very intimate, never rushed and the guide made sure to check I was ok (knowing I'd had a bad shoulder and so couldn't swim fast). We saw colourful sea-life such as star fish, as well as corals and lovely fish. Exceptional and I'd recommend this trip We then did whale-watching where we saw hump back whales and dolphins - just us two on that trip, which made it even more special; again, the guide and his team were excellent and took time out to make sure we had the experience we really wanted. We then did a snorkel trip to Paradise Island - where we saw turtles and so many thousands of beautiful fish; that was excellent too We didn't do the other trips (full Paradise Island day tour, Island hopping, or Island Drive), but other people said they were excellent. The Peri-Peri beach club was a lovely idea and having it available just 2 days a week worked well. We had 2 days where we went there and met with other guests and had quite a fun day in the pool and round the bar (and had pizza), but also had other days where it was just us and the perfect down-time without the need to mingle unless we chose to. Overall it was gorgeous - it is authentic though, this is a real island with real lives going on (it's not the man-made perfection of the Maldives is what we were told before, and I understood that after going - but it was still perfect, in a more authentic way. The ONLY call outs I'd make were: 1. There is no house-reef and the way the tide works you couldn't just walk onto the beach for a swim, apart from between around 4-6pm each afternoon. We knew that before we went and it was fine for us, but something to be aware of if you really want to be able to just plunge in the sea at any time (either for a swim and/or to snorkel) 2. We found the menu a little limited having just two options for each meal (although they did an excellent job with my pescatarian options). We totally understand why, given how small the resort is and the low number of guests that they have (I think there were 22 when we arrived) - it simply wouldn't work to have an extensive menu, but there were a couple of occasions where it felt a bit limited and we picked things we might perhaps not normally go for. That said, our meals were excellent, we had dinners on the beach, they also did us a special seafood platter one night (lobsters etc) and on the last night we dined in their wine cellar, which was lovely. My husband had an excellent fillet steak one night too - very good quality and huge. It's not a complaint about the food/options at all, rather it is more limited and not a full a la carte offering that you might be used to if you normally visit larger resorts. My favourite time of day here was in fact lunchtime though, where we'd sit on the restaurant terrace, watching the boats come and go whilst eating delicious lunches such as fresh crab pasta, giant prawns with lovely chips and salad, all coupled with a nice glass of rose. Oh the prawns, one night we had a tiger prawn - my goodness that thing was HUGE!!! Overall we loved this resort, the people, the experience, the food...everything. Azura was more "authentic" and I mean that in a positive way. This was an inhabited island and the hotel was a part of it, so we got used to seeing the locals going about their business and it felt as though it was built to fit in with them. Loved it and would recommend it.…
