My wife and I visited andBeyound Benguerra Island for a 5 night stay to end our honeymoon and it was the perfect ending. In desperate need of some rest and relaxation, this was the ideal way to spend it.

After the short helicopter flight, we were greeted by Isaac (who was incredible the entire stay) who checked us into the resort and got us situationed. Introduced us to our butler - Nelson - and set us up for a welcome lunch outside our private Casinha.

We were staying in Casinha 1 and we felt like we were on our own private resort. We were tucked away from all the other guests, although the walk was longer to get to the main part of the resort for drinks and meals - which was never an issue for us.

Nelson was very attentive to our needs and made sure we were always satisfied with food, drinks, snacks and always just a phone call away if needed. Nelson made sure our stay was perfect.

The activities (snorkeling, Dhow sunset cruise, picnic, and island tour) were all great in their own way. It was good to see how the resort is adding to the island economy and take great pride in employing and helping the locals.

Our room was very comfortable to relax and sleep in. The AC worked great to keep us nice and cool, and we never had a bug issue indoors. Walking around at night there could be bugs (it's an island in a tropic location) but the provided bug spray was enough to keep them away. I think after 5 days I had 1 mosquito bite.

The outdoor shower might not be for all, but we personally loved it. Showering at night and looking up at the stars is pretty magical.

We've never been to this part of the world before, but we cannot wait to return.

We worked with &Beyond (Jacqui) to book our honeymoon. We started out thinking we would do Kenya + a nearby beach location but after talking about our priorities and budget, Jacqui recommended South Africa (Phinda Vlei - reviewed separately) and &Beyond Benguerra Island. The itinerary was perfect, all of our travel was so seamless, and we wouldn’t have changed a thing. We stayed six nights at Benguerra Island which was the perfect amount of time. There is plenty to do - we left our agenda up to our activities manager, Lorenzo, and were able to do all of the included activities (snorkeling, sunset dhow cruise, private island lunch, horseback riding, paddleboards). We still had plenty of time to enjoy our private suite which had a pool, day bed, and beach chairs. The suite itself was also very nice and comfortable. Paulo, our butler, was a highlight of our stay for us. He truly has a passion for hospitality and you can’t help but smile when he’s around! The food was also amazing - meals are either in the garden or at the dhow bar, and dinner is set up right on the beach. The island is so beautiful and the staff are incredible. Cannot recommend enough! (We went in July 2022 and the weather was perfect. Maybe a *little* chilly at night but they had blankets at the tables)

This lodge is just something else.. Even though we had been to this island before, this specific organisation and its staff really is above and beyond anything we have ever experienced.

Management: Zané and Lorenzo were there all the time without you noticing or realising it. They anticipate your every need and wish and nothing is too much to ask from them.

Our butlers: Sergio and Paolo were phenomenal - always friendly, happy and around to serve you endless flows of food and drink. Both have a great sense of humour and we laughed at their little jokes all the time.

Mike, the chef, is an absolute master. Fresh fish from the ocean is on every day's menu and just when you think it can't get any better, it does.

Zef and the guys at the bar make fantastic cocktails and are always ready with a drink and a smile.

Mario and the catamaran team were also awesome - from fishing to snorkeling and picnic on a deserted island, they were lovely.

The setting is beautiful. We had dinner on the beach every night and could not believe that every sunset was just perfect. The casinhas are well equipped with gorgeous outside showers and little details like a blue tooth speaker. Each private pool has a sea view and you have a choice of a sun lounger next to the pool, in the shade or on the beach.

We were trying to find some constructive feedback to give before we left and we just could not think of a single thing - this lodge and its staff are out of this world! Go as soon as you can!

We were very disappointed with our stay at &Beyond Benguerra. We arrived to our room and found multiple openings to the outdoors intentionally built into the windows and ceiling. Because of this, there were constantly insects and other living things in our room despite our best efforts to keep them out. Over the course of our stay we found a mouse, several cockroaches, centipedes, spiders and more in our room. Several salamanders seemed to live in the room and we would see them on the walls without fail each time we returned to the room. There were also bats flying around outside, but they never entered the room. My wife and I are both leaving with tons of bug bites and a rash. For a place advertised as a luxury lodge, it was unacceptable to us to have so many issues with insects and animals in our room.

Even if the above hadn’t been an issue, there were still several significant shortcomings at the lodge. The wifi was weak when it worked and would cut out completely all the time, there were no tvs in the rooms, no gym at the lodge, a tiny bathroom and no indoor shower. The outdoor shower was in the direct sunlight most of the day making it very difficult for someone with fair skin to shower when it was light out.

I will say that the staff was very nice and went above and beyond to make our stay more comfortable. They were there to help with our every need and truly cared about us having a good time. The snorkeling and castaway picnic were also great experiences.

At the end of the day, we paid $1,600 a night to stay at the lodge and really had trouble justifying how expensive it was. As a baseline, we would never expect bugs or animals in our room when traveling. Adding the other issues on top of that just made us feel like we didn’t get any value for what we paid. There are tons of other remote beaches around the world that are significantly less expensive and offer a better overall experience. Even if you are ok with insects and animals all over your room, you can find a better luxury experience other places for significantly less money.

Hi Dberk93, Thank you for taking the time to post your review, we are sorry that your stay at &Beyond Benguerra Island Lodge did not live up to your expectations. Being out in nature amongst the lush Island Forest and the beach there are times when little critters manage to find their way indoors. That said however, our teams do everything possible to keep them outdoors – again, we are sorry that you experienced some of these little creatures; nature certainly has its own agenda. Thank you for your praise for our teams whom I am aware did everything possible to make you feel comfortable and please be assured that we are in direct consultation with your Travel Agent who, I have no doubt, will be in touch with you directly. Kind regards Niall Anderson

My wife and I booked the final stay of our honeymoon at AndBeyond Benguerra. From the moment we arrived we were disappointed with our experience. The manager "warned" us that the weather was going to be miserable all week, even though it turned out to be 80 and sunny for our entire stay on the island. The manager also spoiled a surprise boat ride I had booked for my wife and myself. Despite the start to the stay we were willing to look past these incidents, but more issues arose as the day went on. The huts are not secure to the outside so we had multiple lizards inside of our room, specifically in the bathroom stall, around our laundry, toothbrushes etc.. After multiple attempts to reach the manager she came to our room and said there was nothing they could do about the lizards in the room, but they're good to have because they eat the bugs. Meanwhile, the room was filled with other bugs and the mosquito net was filthy. The manager then suggested on her own accord that we might be happier moving to a different resort.

We woke up the next morning without knowing that the manager had called the resort next door, Azura, and we decided to walk over there to check out the property. We were greeted by their manager and the tone was completely different. He informed us that our agent and andBeyond had already arranged for us to move and transfer our existing reservation with no additional cost.

We then went back to andBeyond to pack up our things. The same manager and other staff came up to us to say they were glad to hear the move was arranged and that Azura would pick us up in an hour. Shortly thereafter our agent called to inform us that andBeyond would be charging us for the five nights originally booked i.e. a full cancellation fee. We were shocked by this given andBeyond arranged the move.

At this point, we were disheartened and began looking at flights back to the US. We decided to sit down with a different manager to see if we could resolve our issue with someone new. She completely understood that we could not pay for two resorts. Within 30 minutes she had contacted andBeyond management, gotten us a documented letter acknowledging andBeyond would waive the cancellation fee, and organized our transport to Azura. We were very impressed and grateful to the other manager who sorted out the issue, but it was shocking that andBeyond would try to charge a full cancellation fee after suggesting we move.

Once again the AndBeyond Group have shown their class above the rest. From the helicopter flight in, the welcoming reception, the personal attention and attention to detail you can’t go wrong. This is a lodge built to enjoy what Africa and Mozambique have to offer. It wild and rustic with all the glamour. Don’t expect tv’s and wi-fi, expect to enjoy the warmth of the Mozambique people together with tropical environment you’re sharing with nature. The meals served pretty much on the beach by your private butler are one of a kind. Really enjoyed my stay and would gladly recommend for a romantic break for couples. I’ve had the pleasure of staying at other Andbeyond lodges and they have all been great experiences.

Wonderful stay with outstanding service but need renovation

We had a fantastic time on Benguerra Island at the &Beyond facility. Particularly noteworthy is the outstanding service: Our personal butler Abel was simply excellent, and our cleaner Alder was also a true dream. We would have liked to take both of them with us!

The facility is unique and individual, and deserves its five stars – not least because of &Beyond’s great commitment to the local population. Supporting schools and a hospital on the island is impressive and gives the stay a special touch.

However, we would like to point out that the accommodation itself has become somewhat old. Although everything was functionally fine, renovation work would be urgently needed in some places. In particular, the wooden decks, upholstery pads and also the bed could be modernized to keep the standard of the facility up to date.

Nevertheless, our stay was an unforgettable experience due to the exceptional service and beauty of the island. Thanks to the whole team!

We went here on the 2nd part of our Honeymoon in Africa, following 4 days on safari and this was the perfect end.

The helicopter to the island added something special to kick off the trip, the views of the water and island were spectacular from the helicopter. We had the warmest welcome from the staff once we landed and after a smooth check in we were taken to our rooms. The room is huge and comfortable with plenty of water, drinks and even snacks. You have your own pool, lounging space, covered day bed/cabana and beach chairs. Your patio space is completely private with a lot of foliage around and even on the beach there are barely anyone in your area. There are 12 total "cabins" I believe, half on each side and I know the one side was getting renovated when we were staying there. Everyone got a butler, who ours went above and beyond for everything. Drinks, food, snacks you name it and he got it. The food was amazing too.. it was almost to much food (if someone forced me to say a negative about that place it would be that we ate to much at every meal haha).. everything was so fresh and healthy though. The drinks were amazing too and the beach bar was a cool spot.

Dinner on the beach was also really nice and private. There could be bugs at night but I wore a long dress each dinner and didn't really have a problem between that and the candles/breeze. We also did the Dhow cruise which was really neat and I recommend... and the Castaway Picnic was absolutely amazing and we HIGHLY recommend that too. Everything was just so private and felt exclusive.. it was a perfect honeymoon paradise.

Also, there was nothing where we were that was dangerous (different from safari) so that was comforting when walking around. The people were all very friendly and seemed very happy for all that the resort brought to the island. It was nice to talk to everyone there and see how they lived and their backgrounds. Everyone went above and beyond. The beaches were amazing too.. crystal clear water and white sand.. other than when the tide went WAY out.. the sand was mucky where the tide was but that was ok, we walked around the beach a lot which I would recommend too. There were some really neat shells.

Highly recommend to anyone thinking about a special, private trip together.

This was perfect beach oasis to cap off our African honeymoon adventure. The world is seemingly at your finger tips as soon as you set foot at this resort, with a chorus of woman singing local songs to welcome you. The staff truly knows how to make your feel special. The sprinkle meaningful details throughout your interactions with them and are very personal. Our butler Helder and activity leader, Carlos were particular highlights of our stay. They provided truly special service. The management staff is also very engaging throughout the stay in order to guarantee every detail is correct.

In addition to the excellent staff, a number of activities are included in you stay including: Snorkeling the local coral reef (the BEST snorkeling i've ever done), traditional dhow boat sunset cruise, horseback riding, paddleboarding and private picnic.

Lastly, this resort also fosters a deep connection with the surrounding island villages, creating a sense of pride in knowing that your stay contributes to the local community. This meaningful relationship adds an extra layer of purpose to the luxurious experience.

We honeymooned at &Beyond Benguerra from 8-14 May 2023 and it was perfect. The helicopter flight into the island gives you a taste of the untouched natural beauty that is a theme throughout your stay. The island is one of the most beautiful I have been to and &Beyond have managed to find the perfect balance of championing nature whilst ensuring the utmost of luxury living. The suites are incredible and have everything you need so you never need to leave your room! The activities are perfectly thought out and are carried out by the loveliest of people. But what really made our stay unforgettable was our butler, Abel. He went above and beyond to ensure we had everything we needed, often anticipating our needs before we knew them! He has the biggest smile and the warmest heart and I loved seeing him at our different meals throughout the day. Thank you, &Beyond, for giving us a magical and unforgettable honeymoon.

They are private. Each side of the room is well vegetated and in front of the room is sparsely vegetated. People walking the beach can not see into your room from the beach due to a small sand dune then the roof of your swinging bed. The distance from the beach to the rooms varied. The biggest thing to remember is that the island itself is private with few visitors and the resort is highly inclusive. My husband and I walked for hours on the beach without seeing a soul. The staff of the hotel are amazing and do a great job scheduling activities for you. It is one amazing place.

You can definitely hire a dhow by negotiating the price with one of the locals. My husband went out while we were there. He "hand" fished (no rod just weights, line, and hook) and then once the tide went out he spear fished lobster. He brought the lobster in and the chef fixed them for us as part of our dinner that night. Hope this helps.
