We had planned a relaxing and special weekend break on an island that we looked pretty special and in a hotel that promised to be pretty special too.
We arrived early evening to be told that the restaurant and bar were closed as it was the end of season! The receptionist told us that she had just e mailed us to tell us ( we had been travelling all day so no wi-fi) and she said that the information was on booking .com .When we booked we didn't see that and , afterwards, when we looked again we had to scroll down through a lot of info to find it. We should have been informed clearly on booking, by the hotel ,that this was the case so that we could reconsider our booking. The hotel is not within walking distance of any restaurant so the receptionist gave us a short list of possibilities. We drove in darkness on unfamiliar roads to the Flying Goat. Hardly a relaxing start to our special treat!
The room,207,was small, noisy from staff activities and chat until midnight. The bedding clean but ill fitting( the fitted sheet kept springing off at the corners and ,along with the stuffy room,a woollen blanket under this sheet, made for an uncomfortable sleep. I took the wool underblanket off on the second night and had the windows open!

Going down to breakfast was like being on the Marie Celeste, no staff in site to greet us, and tables set out as for a formal function. The breakfast was adequate BUT no hot food as the restaurant was closed of course.
We feel dissatisfied with the whole hotel experience as it was certainly very expensive ,not value for money ,as it lacked the facilities we were expecting. We go back to England with resentment I'm sorry to say.

Awesome place to vacation, or get away for a weekend. The amenities are great from tennis to biking, water activities, a game room, and an awesome pool were you can take a dip. There are many great restaurants on the Island to check, starting with the Pridwin restaurant. Breakfast is great and the staff is quite friendly and accommodating. One of the best hotel stay I've experienced.

On 8/23/18 We had book a stay at a different property. The Hotel was terriable and at 10:30 Pm we decided to switch hotels. I called The Pridwin and spoke with Kim Fowlow who said she could get us in for 1 of the 2 nights we need. They were booked for Friday. When I got to the property the staff could not have been nicer. We were helped with our luggage up the stairs and even gave us free soda from the bar to take upstairs. The room was small but comfortable. The next morning we went to the complimentary breakfast that they offer. I was looking for another hotel for that night. Kim came and found us at breakfast and said she would be able to give us a bigger water front room for the night if we wanted to stay. She said we could have it for the same price as the night before. We were thrilled to be able to stay. The hotel may be a little dated but has an old charm to it. The beds are comfortable and the hotel its self has a very charming vibe. We would definitely come back if we are in the area again.

The Pridwin on Shelter Island really could be one of my favorite places on earth. Myself and my family will continue to come back again and again. The rooms are spacious, and the food throughout our stay was fresh and delicious!

The property is absolutely spectacular and one of a kind. Being able to go from beach to pool in such close proximity was truly a treat. I love that it still maintains it's Shelter Island orginal vibe unlike so many of the newer establishments.

I highly recommend the Pridwin to anyone looking for the perfect place to vacation with a relaxed adult as well as family vibe. Thank you!

We do so appreciate you taking time to review and your recommendation. You have discovered one of our favorite rhythms: the pool to bay samba! Thank you for sharing. The Pridwin

While the staff at the Pridwin was friendly, the hotel is poorly maintained.

The Pridwin boasts a lovely view of the bay, a dock with a some water equipment and friendly (but disorganized) staff. However, the hotel is very old, dirty and poorly run. The carpet is at least 20 years old, the paint is chipping and everything on the premises is dated, especially the wood paneled tv room with the, yes, VHS machine. Our room (recommended as one of their best) was very small and the mattress was so old the springs no longer functioned. The walls are thin, which enables guests to hear everything down the hall or in the next room. The 1970’s air conditioning unit was powerful but noisy, large and ugly. The bathroom was cramped. The decor is dingy and cluttered with decor from the 20’s and the 70’s. Most of the hotel is dusty and musky. The Pridwin is more like a motel with creepy hallways suitable for a horror movie. In particular the framed period swimsuits on the walls and the terrifying mirror atop the secondary staircase. There is no elevator. Staff directs guests to take their own luggage (however much) up the three flights of stairs if they are on the 3rd floor in the most expensive rooms with the best views. This is despite many able-bodied teenage staff roaming the halls.

The hotel welcomed mostly families with small children. This is not a hotel suited for a romantic getaway or for business. The wifi is unreliable. The staff is comprised of teenagers - this is not necessarily a bad thing, but they seemed to lack adults directing or motivating them to provide active guest support, and most seemed to be socializing with each other. While we were happy they had numerous water activity options, staff was not quite prepared in terms of rigging or vessel prep, or safety instructions. Further, if you use the beach, you must bring your own towel. There is no service down at their private beach.

The food at the restaurant is fresh and thoughtful. However, the complimentary breakfast comprised of powdered eggs, cereal and cheap carbohydrates like donuts and toast.

Lastly, there is a beautiful fishing boat docked at the hotel dock named “Pridwin”, ready to take guests on a beautiful tour of the bays. Except that’s the owner’s boat that the staff is told to explain it is used by the owner to catch the fish you will eat at the restaurant. It never left the dock during our stay. Judging by the type and condition of the boat, if the owners would put their personal recreation fund into the facility this place might be worth staying at. Too bad, it has potential otherwise.

Given the price point of the hotel, it was a disappointment.

We are sorry for your disappointment, though perhaps it’s to be expected with our Gryffindor allegiance? ; ) The Pridwin was built in the 1920s (well before motels!) and we do try to maintain the original intentions of the style and sensibility, while aspiring to modern standards of service. For the record, all the carpet in the hotel has been replaced in the last 6 years and we maintain a similar replacement schedule with room mattresses. You nailed our achilles heal this summer: we lost a porter and 2 beach attendants within weeks of opening and because of the nature of seasonal hires were not able to recoup those positions. We are very sorry for that. Because yes we do typically in season have young workers to help with luggage and the watercraft and beach service, yet this season our forces in these departments were diminished. Different strokes for different folks, some people come to the Pridwin breakfast just for our home made donuts. We are always making improvements and hope if you do have an urge to come out our way again that you’ll consider us again. We would be honored to make sure you get the right accommodation and service. Just ask for Jen when you make your reservation. (And yes, The Shining and Dirty Dancing are two of our favorite films!). Yours truly The Pridwin
