We stayed here for one night while visiting my niece at Vassar. It was very clean and the coffee machine in the hallway was put to good use. There was also a fridge in the hallway where we were able to store our leftovers from dinner. The lady who checked us in and out was a pleasure to deal with. The room is small and my other family members had corner rooms and they were at about twice the size of our room. My only negative would be that the mattress was very soft and I had trouble sleeping since every time my husband moved, it was like being on a water bed. Walking distanced to restaurants. I would absolutely stay here again when visiting my niece.

Like a museum or a castle! Well appointed. Lovely. Beautiful old furniture. We stayed here while dropping my daughter at college. Staff was friendly and helpful. Room was huge. Bathroom remodeled. Breakfast is simple but good. Right across the street from campus and lots of history within.

We found ourselves in Poughkeepsie and needed two rooms for the night. Unluckily all hotels were fully booked so I checked "www.tripadvisor.com" in hope for a room. Thanks to a fellow tripadvisor member who posted his comment a few days ago we learned about this -I guess otherwise hard to find- hotel.

It's probably difficult to approriately bring across my satisfaction but I will try it anyway: it was one of the nicest and most charming places i have ever stayed in - and I am travelling quite a lot. This is the kind of hotel we are all looking for! A very special building (old masion) in which everything is original and very well maintained and at a price which is far lower than even the Holiday Inn around the corner would charge.

I can recommend this hotel to everyone even though it is probably too nice for business travellers such as myself. It rather deserves newly weds or at least couples looking for a romantic getaway.

P.S. Something I liked in particular as a European was that all prices included taxes so that you get the full picture even if you are not familiar this the actual tax rates.

You want to visit your college student at Vassar. The Alumnae House is right across the street, promises bed and breakfast, and convenience. What could be bad, you think? So you book a room with a king-sized bed for two ($145/night, plus $20/night for the extra person in the room). It'll be like staying with family.

The first surprise comes when you check in. Breakfast isn't on the premises. The receptionist hands you $12 coupons for two nearby cafes. (Treasure the moment -- you won't see any employees again.) Well, okay, it's not as convenient as eating in the house, but you're game. At least, until the next morning, when it is pouring rain.

You make your way upstairs, noting that, although there is an elevator, you wouldn't necessarily want to stay here if you were mobility-impaired; the halls are narrow, there are steps from one level of the floor you are staying on to another. There's a free Keurig machine in the hall, and a vending machine (not free) for snacks.

You open the door to your room. Oh, it's just like home, isn't it? Somewhat shabby furnishings, a bedspread that has seen better days. The over-all impression is Early-20th Century Mustard. One of the lamps, you discover, has a delicate on-off switch, and it turns itself on in the middle of the night. Well, fine. You're only here for two days.

And then -- you sit down on the bed, and sink down, and down. It's an old, saggy bed. The sheets are at least part polyester, in a never-clean cream color. The blanket is disgusting -- one of those old foam things that should have been retired years ago. The bedspread is smelly. The pillows are two-inches thick, polyester fiber-fill, with no spring left in them.

The bathroom has peeling paint, holes in the plaster, mildew on the grout between the tiles. The tub was refinished once, but the coating is peeling off, making it look smudged. There are other people's hairs on the bathroom floor. The towels are barely adequate -- they have never been thick enough to be called "fluffy" and they haven't gotten thicker with time.

If you were staying with family, you wouldn't complain; it's so nice of them to let you use their spare room. They don't have the money to replace pillows, sheets and towels, or to repair the walls. They're too old to do a good job of cleaning. They can't afford to redecorate and update.

But -- wait -- this isn't family. You paid $165 for one night here, remember, and the breakfast only cost $12, so why did they charge you $20 for that extra person? $8 for the use of the towels?

I know that there are overhead costs associated with each person. But for the cost of staying here, and the nickel-and-diming that the $20 charge represents, I'm not inclined to give the benefit of the doubt.

In short: too expensive, too shabby, too dirty. Stay elsewhere.

I had no idea that Vassar had accomodations available to the public. I found out by reading their web site.

The "House" is a converted mansion adjacent to the beautiful Vassar campus. The price was very reasonable, although the rooms are quite basic (no TV). Making up for the sparce rooms, is the beautiful sitting room/library and majestic common room.

The bathroom was renovated and we were supplied with high quality toiletries. A continental breakfast is offered for a nominal price ($6). It was ample.

The Hall is a nice alternative to a chain hotel. It's location in the Hudson Valley is ideal if you are visiting the CIA , FDR house etc. There are also plenty of good restaurants nearby- we especially liked our meal at Bone Fish on Route 9.

I have stayed here twice now and it does not disappoint. Well appointed rooms in a historic setting. Various libraries and parlors to relax and soak up the ambiance. Only regret is that on site restaurant and pub is not open. Would LOVE high quality dining on site.

Breakfast not being readily available is a bit of a pain, I'm used to staying in name brand hotels where you receive all the comfort and cleanliness that is expected during a stay away from home. A bit of advice, clean the shower, mold is not a good look, being I am part of a hotel management team, I may be a bit critical seeing as this is defintitely not a hotel, it's more of a "dorm room/motel".
Next time I'll definitely stay at a chain, at least you are aware of the expectations and standards. this was a huge disappointment.

We stay at Alumnae house each winter, often on the way to or from somewhere further north, although we have also used it as a base to drop into the city for a day. We love this place. Lots of great little places to read (a library straight out of Oxford, a beautiful great room, and of course the cozy guest room itself). Lots of great antique furniture and stone makes it feel like a castle (would be super fun for little ones). Keurig coffee maker with Hot chocolate and tea options available for guests. Most rooms are great, but make sure you request a bathtub if you want one as not all rooms have them. The ones that do have great deep soaking tubs- super relaxing. The beds are exceptionally comfortable and high quality. Front Desk staff is wonderful and very flexible. Reasonable prices give what it is (and includes vouchers for breakfast).

Great place to take long walks in the woods and around campus. Good for talking, reading, and reflecting. If you need a TV and blaring entertainment, this is not the place for you.

Lots of little cafes nearby for food.

then you would LOVE the dorm style rooms of this hotel. OK, so everyone is right about the fact that is is a really "cool" old historic place to visit. It looks like it was lifted up from some old town in the UK and plopped in Poughkeepsie. I am sure the normal (expensive) rooms are fine, but dont, i stress DO NOT book the "dorm style rooms". The only thing they mention about these rooms is that you share a hallway bathroom. I was just in college not too long ago, so this was not a major deturrent. I figured that since the price was only 60$ a night compared to 150 for the real room, id gladly pay half as much and deal with the shared bathroom. I can't tell you how shocked I was when I unlocked the room and walked in. It was like something out of National Lampoon's European Vacation. The room seriously was probably about 6 x 8 and the entire ceiling was at a 45 degree angle. It was like being inside a traditional triangle chuck of cheese. The room had 2 children size beds and a light. thats it. My girlfriend did not find it amusing, but I did. THank God we were just sleeping there and then getting up early and going out. I would rather stay at a home for the mentally disturbed. I wish I had taken pictures, to try and save future travelers the terror. Yes, everything was clean, yes it was only 60$, but I have paid 60$ thru hotwire for a 4 star hotel in downtown montreal!!!!!! rooms that you could roller skate in and have balconeys overlooking a beautiful city witha pool on the roof! Well, anyways, my main point, is DONT GET THE DORM STYLE ROOM.

We stayed the night here, as our son had a tour at Vassar the next morning. it is the best place to stay in town and walking distance to some good restaurants. It feels a bit like staying at your Grandmother's house. Cozy and historic.

"Rooms at a nearby hotel will suit most people much better. if you want really want to stay on-campus and are OK staying in a college building that has guest rooms, keep your expectations low, and you may enjoy the beauty of the building and the history. Otherwise, there are rooms for the same price that have all the ameneties a stones throw away."

"There is not "service" at Alumnae House in the way that there is (or should be) at a hotel. Staying here is not about "service." It's about the glorious architecture, location and grace of the building."
