Wow wow wow is all I can say! My husband and I spent 4 glorious honeymoon days at Nedile Lodge. From the start we were blown away. Picked up by Wienand at the gate and straight away we experienced the magic of the Safari as we drove past cheeky warthogs, sweet impalas, elegant zebras and the ever contented wildebeest. When we arrived at the lodge all the staff came to meet us and we were offered a lovely cocktail. Wienand then told us they had a special surprise …and it was a huge one, a massive Bull Elephant washing himself in the pool (watering hole) just below the balcony. It was so emotional! Such a big Elephant leisurely washing just next to us. During our stay many other animals came up to lodge to basque at the water hole and we were able to sit there and just enjoy watching them. We spent the first day just my husband and me which isn’t usual but was amazing for us, we had a personal game drive and learnt so much. That afternoon we saw: another Bull elephant, a Cheetah mum with her cubs, who had just made a kill, they were eating and playing she was relaxing just next to our jeep, we also saw Rhino’s, Zebras, more warthogs and Wildebeest. At Welgevonded they have such a large number of white Rhinos and due to their location and guards the Rhino all have their horns which is lovely to see. We were blessed to see a whole family with their baby and take a drink right next to them! We went on many more drives over the next few days and saw so much: hyena’s with cubs, Baboons, Vervet monkey’s, Buffalo’s, Giraffe, male Lion who again had just made a kill (zebra), Crocodile, and Hypos with their baby on their back. We saw So many beautiful birds too, one had real attitude and really made me laugh. Wienand was so good at spotting all the animals and was very knowledgeable and we learnt a lot on the drives. Especially about poop, I know all the different colours shapes and sizes lol. The lodge itself was a dream. It was the first time for ages I felt true peace, sitting on our balcony just looking out over the reserve was so zen for me. I felt weird to begin with having a bath with no blinds but once in I felt at one nature lol hope no one had binoculars near by!! The food was just out of this world. John would tell us the menu choice at the start of the day, and each meal was top class, delicious. Not one disappointing meal. Between drives you get a little down time to sunbathe, read or have a massage. Gladys gave me an incredible Swedish massage and I felt even more relaxed after that, perfect way to get rid of the flight stiffness. Lizzy gave my husband an African massage, using what looked like a rolling pin lol Remember to tip the staff, we took cash with us but were able to also tip on card. They work very hard and really deserve it. It’s hard at first to get your head around the currency, but take a few moments before you go to work out what the exchange is and consider what you would tip in your country and work it out to their money. They really appreciate it. We have so many amazing memories, but this isn’t over for us, we are already planning to return and possibly combine Nedile with another location. We went on to Mauritius for the second part of our honeymoon but next time we will extend at Nedile. We went on November 13th 2023. Some days were hot and sunny. Others were windy and cold, make sure you pack for both weathers, a big puffer jacket was used as well as the Ponchos offered from the lodge! See you soon Nedile Lodge!! 🥰

If you are after a mid range, good value, affordable game reserve/safari experience in a beautiful, malaria free, reserve then Nedile is unlikely to disappoint. I was looking for a last minute 2 night ‘bush fix’ while on business in SA and as I am familiar with Welgevonden Game Reserve - having stayed at various lodges going back 20 years - made some enquiries and Nedile could accommodate me. I knew of Nedile Lodge and it was a different experience to others I have enjoyed on this well managed reserve. While Nedile has a 5 star rating it is smaller and more intimate than some of the bigger commercial lodges on the reserve - only accommodating 10 in five rooms; some in the same unit, and quite close to one another and the central facility. Nedile was built 20 years ago by the current South African owners on the rocky top of one of the mountain ridges and enjoys a spectacular and commanding view over the reserve with the Waterberg mountains in the distance. The immediate outlook over hilly wooded bush means there is not a lot of passing game although I saw warthogs, zebras, baboons and kudu drinking from the small waterhole below the central facility deck. The close proximity of bedrooms and central facility means you can hear fellow guests and also conversation, noise and activity at the central facility. Quite a few other solo guests when I stayed. I think Nedile would work well should you want an exclusive use experience with up to 10 family or friends. The rooms are well appointed with a degree of privacy including private deck with chairs and usual outdoor shower with the same incredible view. While the rooms have a ceiling fan there is no A/C and it was very warm at night when I visited at the end of November. There are also no flyscreens over windows or doors meaning you can’t leave these open at night to cool down or to enjoy the sounds of the bush! There are no mosquito nets over the comfortable beds although at the time of my visit I was not troubled by any bugs or mosquitoes outdoors at night. A small and friendly staff took good care of guests. The food was good, relatively simple and tasty, and served at tables (one for each room) on the central facility deck next to the pool and with the view stretching in from of you. The lodge has a boma area but this was not used on the 2 nights I stayed; apparently it is a Saturday night thing. Nedile is situated right on the western side of this vast reserve which means that getting there via the West Gate added 40 minutes to the journey compared to Main Gate, and the last 16km was on a very poor corrugated sand road in desperate need of repair and tough on non 4x4 vehicles. Being right on the western side of the reserve makes it practically difficult to get to large parts of the reserve as the drive would take quite a lot of time in the game viewing vehicle. This means you may not see as much of the reserve which may impact on which species you are likely to see. Of the Big 5, rhinos are the easiest to locate and see and I was fortunate that we had a great leopard sighting on a morning drive. There was plenty of evidence of lion and elephant in the proximity of the lodge - spoor, dung etc - but unfortunately they remained elusive. I think Nedile can deliver the Big 5 if that is what you are after although I saw these more easily from other more centrally located lodges I have stayed at on the reserve. Nedile has some great birdlife which I enjoyed. The pool at the central facility is good although there are only 4 sun loungers. While game drives and three meals were included in the daily rate all drinks were extra including the Amarula in the coffee at the morning game drive stop! Also no padkos for the 4 hour journey back to Johannesburg!

Response from Hennie Kriek, Owner at Nedile Lodge
Responded 3 days ago
Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experiences at Nedile Lodge. We're delighted to hear that you appreciated the unique, intimate setting of our lodge and the spectacular views it offers of the Waterberg mountains and the reserve. We understand your observations regarding the room amenities and the absence of air conditioning. Our commitment to being eco-friendly, as you noted, has led us to rely on more sustainable options like solar energy and ceiling fans and the natural cooling provided by our environment. The rooms were specially designed to provide a natural flow of air. What also contributed to your experience was that the Limpopo province experienced an unprecedented heat wave during your stay. We strive to offer an authentic bush experience, and part of that is immersing our guests in the natural surroundings, including the sights and sounds of the bush. Your feedback about the rooms is vital, and we will certainly consider this in our ongoing efforts to improve guest experiences. This was, I might add, the first time that we received this feedback in the 22 years that I have owned and operated Nedile Lodge. We're glad, however, that the layout facilitated a close-knit community feel during your stay. Regarding the road conditions and location, we continuously liaise with the local authorities to address maintenance issues. We agree that the journey can be part of the adventure, leading to our more secluded spot, which offers a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city. It is remote, and this is what some guests appreciate about the trek down the dirt road. We're thrilled to hear of your wildlife sightings, especially the leopard, and appreciate your understanding that animal movements are unpredictable, making each safari experience unique. Our location on the western side of the reserve offers a different perspective on the game-viewing experience, and we're glad this contributed to your overall enjoyment. The western part of the reserve is known for its game-viewing host spots such as fig tree plains, but if you want to experience a Serengeti feel with large open planes, it is better to book a lodge in the southern parts of the reserve. Thank you for your kind words about our staff and the dining experience. We aim to provide warm and personalized service to all our guests. Your suggestion of staying in different parts of the reserve is an excellent one, and we're happy to help arrange such experiences for future visits. We appreciate your insights and will take them into serious consideration as we continually strive to enhance our lodge and the experiences of our guests. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back to Nedile Lodge in the future for another memorable bush experience. Kind regards Hennie

We loved it here. We just loved it. The staff. Superb. Quite superb. From the amazing chefs, to the “do anything” helpful staff to the funny but oh so knowledgeable Andrew (game drive leader) to the organising masterful Lisa who runs the show… everyone was simply amazing. The location. Magnificent. An awesome elevated view of the park - out of this world. The game drives. Different every day but we saw several lion, elephants, zebra, cheetah, wildebeest, warthog, etc. The only thing we didn’t see was a leopard though others in a different vehicle did. Outstanding.

We spent three nights at Nedile Lodge and it was probably the best trip we've ever done. Everything was just perfect, and so much thought went into all the little touches that made the whole experience truly wonderful. The team were amazing, especially our safari guide Wienand who was super knowledgable and passionate about what he does. The lodge itself is stunning, and Welgevonden is the most magnificent backdrop imaginable. Would return in a heartbeat!

I just returned from an amazing 7 day stay at Nedile Lodge and could not be happier with my experience. From the moment we arrived, the staff made us feel very welcome and very much at home. The lodge itself is beautiful…set atop a hillside overlooking the Welgevonden Game Reserve with first class suites and accommodations. It was a treat each evening to watch the animals come to the watering hole below the open air deck. As amazing as the facility is, it was the staff that made the visit so unique and memorable. We went on daily game drives with Hanro and his passion for the animals and his knowledge of their behavior enabled us to get in position to see an amazing assortment of animals - lions, rhinos, giraffes, zebras, cheetah with cubs, and countless bird species. We even watched a pair of cheetahs stalk and chase the small pack of zebras! (It was an unsuccessful hunt and no one was harmed in the process). I would definitely recommend the Nedile Lodge for a world-class taste of Africa and the amazing wildlife that lives there.

We had the most incredible stay at Nedile Lodge. The staff were so friendly and made our trip so special. The views around the lodge and from the rooms are stunning and it’s so nice watching all the animals come to the watering-hole whilst you are eating your meals. We saw all of the big 5 apart from the leopard. We had some amazing sightings and even got to see the cheetah with her cubs which is something we’ll never forget. We can’t thank Wienand, Danell and the staff enough for all their hard work and all the extra little things they did to make the trip so enjoyable. The game drives were brilliant and Wienand is such a knowledgable guide and made the experience unforgettable, he clearly has such a passion for what he does and has the most interesting stories to share. The food was phenomenal and every meal was delicious we were lucky enough to have Mapula as our chef for our stay. Cannot recommend this place enough and we’ll definitely be visiting again! What a trip!

We had an amazing 3 nights stay at Nedile on the first part of our honeymoon trip. First time on safari and we were lucky to see all the big 5. The atmosphere is so nice and cosy in the lodge. The surroundings are beautiful. The staff are really quite amazing! They work so hard! We really appreciated the hot water bottles on the cold mornings and put in our bed for us at night, the notes and chocolates and having our fire lit so our room was warm when we got back from dinner. The driver Vinand was amazing. He did such a great job finding the animals even when it was cold on the mid-winter morning drives! He was very knowledgeable and we liked learning about anti-poaching in SA. We got loads of great pictures and we loved the hot chocolates with amarula on our morning game drives! We have bought some amarula for back in the UK! Also must mention the chef John. What a guy! The food is really amazing at every meal and John was such a great host in coming to tell us what was on the menu. All the great staff make this such a fantastic place and we really hope we get to go back on safari again in the future! Thank you Nedile!
