If you read this, you may to want to stay there and I want to keep this as my secret.
But first - you must understand it is a hostel. It is not a hotel. Having said that, This is the cleanest, quietest hostel I have ever stayed in. The no drinking/drugs/smoking rule is heaven for those of us who really just want a good night's sleep in a peaceful, safe environment.
There are 3 types of rooms. The dorm room setting is the least expensive, but I am well beyond college age and did not want to act as "House Mum". The other two options are still seriously less expensive than area hotels (which are not as quiet or clean). Whether you choose a private room or a room with shared bath, you will still have mismatched towels and sheets, but the mattress has good support and access to a rather nice kitchen.
It appeared as if most of the rooms were actually student housing, so perhaps I just stayed there at a time when most students were studying, but everyone was friendly, yet kept to him/herself.

I wrote a glowing review about this hostel back in August. Unfortunately, when I returned in October for a week stay I was VERY DISAPPOINTED. First, "Ledo" (owner) was not around and despite having contacting him he never had courtesy to reply. Although, he was in constant contact with staff. First, the hostel guest now must use rear door entrance (like second class). The hostelers are barred from the front (before, we had free access). The staff (all female) seems to be a like "Charlie's Angels" if you get my drift. Lastly, to my horror throughout the day homeless people, hikers or campers can enter for a shower ($5.). However, the shower is the one we pay for and our room/belongings are unattended and these people (although, video cams watch) could steal something and New Paltz Hostel claims no responsibility. The staff was not friendly and merely interested in collecting money. Although, I was given permission to remain a few hours after check-out to wait for my bus back to NYC. The charm of this place has certainly diminished. Don't think I'll return except to take a shower.

Room Tip: Don't stay in dorm room ... although, to get private room may cost more than a hotel.

We have stayed at this hostel a number of times over the years. It is certainly not for every traveler, but it suits our needs perfectly. We like the fact that there is a strict no drugs/alcohol/smoking policy and the hostel is one of the quietest I have ever stayed in. This is not a hostel for the late night partying crowd.

The rooms are nothing special, but each has a warm, welcoming touch. Our room during our most recent stay included a queen size bed and two bunks with a private bathroom for $70/nightly. This is higher than most hostels charge, but the New Paltz Hostel is a bit more "upscale" than conventional, bare bones hostels, and the motel rates in the area are rather pricey in general, even the flea bag motels.

One great thing about the New Paltz Hostel is the ease of access to public transit. It is right next to the Adirondack Trailways bus station, and there is also a bus link from the Poughkeepsie Amtrak/MetroNorth train station across the river (a bargain at $1.75). You can't beat that.

Be careful with the form you fill you must pay $50 and they never return your money back. They never say about rate of cancellation and they charge you 25% of the whole reservation, even it is due to an emergency they really don´t care . Be careful if you let your luggage there to store, they will charge you $50 per day. And with the worst attitude they say "Give the money to open the door and give you your luggage" That's robbery, that's what that is

Boy, what a let down... I have stayed at this convenient and low key place a number of times and it was easy in, easy out and very clean, cool and hassel-free.

This last visit was a nightmare - the girl who checked me in was literally insane - unfriendly, un-helpful, and so full of herself and the fact that she was the manager for the evening thatit was uncomfortable from the beginning... I have stayed there many times and after I got in, we went down the little hallway to the office - a 2' x 3' cubby off the hall - and she went to the computer to log me in; as she was trying to find my name I leaned in a few inches to see the screen (as I have done many times before with other managers) and she went ballistic, literally transforming instantly into your worst nightmare of a registration person! She freaked out, and in a very loud voice said to get out of the insanely small cubby I wasn't even in... the tension was insane and I tried to talk her back down but nothing could bring her back. She became Nurse Diesel, and showed me the room key and then went up the stairs to take me to the room. I told her she did not need to do that, I have stayed in this room before, and I know where it is... but she insisted, and now became beligerant and defensive. So we went up three flights to the room which she opened and then insisted on opening every drawer, every door and the bathroom, no matter that I tried to tell her I have been there many times and she needn't do this before but to no avail. On the way downstairs an hour later, I went out the front door to my can which was 50 feet away in the driveway, and I propped the door open for a moment, got my bag and came back in - this girl confronted me in the hall, and demanded to know how I got in - I told her that she had just checked me in, showed her my key and told her I went to my car for a minute to get my bag. She went crazy - she started screaming at me that I couldn't do that and that it was a violation of the rules (huh?) and I needed to use the back door and I'd better think about leaving. She'd cancel my three day reservation and refund my money. I said Ok, I'll think about it and went upstairs. 30 minutes later she was at the door, knocking loudly and insisting I needed to leave.

This was so insane that I said I am not going anywhere - I had the res, there were no other accoms available, I had paid for this and done nothing wrong. So she went downstairs and reappeared 10 minutes later and had a phone with her and the owner was on the phone. I explained it all to him and added that if he really wanted me to leave I would, but there would be legal consequences since this girl had no basis for doing any of this and it was all on video and he should look at.

He rang off, then the girl took the phone and vanished downstairs...

Well, I ended up staying for the two days I had booked, but the Nurse Diesel girl was there for the weekend too, and it was uncomfortable and she did nothing to explain or apologize for her outrageous behavior... this was a dead weekend and there was nothing going on and no guests in the Hostel so it seemed to me an over the top reaction by a young, seriously affected person with an inability to handle responsible guest management... and I do not believe I will ever go back after this unfortunate experience.

Avoid at all costs. So sorry...

This was a pleasant experience. We stayed in a private room with a private bath. The staff was very helpful as we arrived late at night yet they were very accommodating. This place is colorful, literally. Our room had crazy paintings on the walls and the towels and linens were equally bright. Our room had a full bath and a full size refrigerator as well. There was AC and for the price we will definitely stay again. Our only hang up was the check out process. There was no direction as we arrived late and at check out time the next morning there was no one around to direct us. We finally found a sign on a door telling us to drop our key there. There is also off street parking but it is limited. Regardless, for the price it was perfect and we will stay again.

Stayed overnight since we planned to spend 2 days hiking and rock climbing in New Paltz. Room was small, clean and cozy. Not recommended for extended stay (especially if you don’t like tight spaces) but good enough for a couple of nights. Lots of activity nearby and the town including shops, spas, restaurants, coffee shops and stores which were all buzzing at night. We returned at 10pm to obey the hostel curfew.

This is a residential house converted to a hostel/ student residence.
The hostel has a central kitchen (fully equipped, complimentary tea, coffee and oats) and a living room, as well as several computers available for the guests. There is parking at the back yard.
Staff is friendly and informative.
We slept in room 3, which has a private bathroom. It has a double bed and a bunk bed, so it sleeps 4. The mattress on the double bed is really bad, with a depression in the middle. Room has AC (no remote control in the room when we were there, staff has it and said the system is new and in testing). The room is not very spacious, but it does the job. It is clean, but the paint is peeling off here and there.
Overall I'd say the room is somewhat overpriced ($84)- I've slept in much better rooms for this price, but you'll pay that because there's no better value around. Value is not that great if you're just coming for a night's sleep. It's better value if you're staying a bit longer, in which case you'll appreciate the living room, kitchen, and in-house coin-operated laundry machines and dryer.

Great spot. Walking distance to all your needs. Clean and well taken care of. Staff were great.
The only thing that was disturbing was how unsociable and entitled the residence were. I have never been snubbed so many times in two days in me life! Spoke to at least 5 people without acknowledgement. The people living there take supplies from the kitchen for travelers passing through. Such as cooking utensils, cutting boards!. Leave dishes in sink when there are provided with there own kitchen. I guess they they have forgot the meaning of a hostel. Hostels are social entities for travelers and students. This disrespect of others is horrid. Just because you live some where does not mean you are suppose to hangout with us travelers. But to be blatantly rude and just down right mean is appalling and should not be tolerated. I have stayed in Hostels and Backpackers in 96 countries so believe me when I say staying here is an great place to do, but beware of the people residing here. No love lost or gained! just full on WANKERS!!

Loved the staff and the Hostel!! Would defiantly recommend to me mates.

Cheers.

This hostel's a great and cheap option in New Paltz. I only stayed here one night, but it was one quiet, comfy night. Big clean bed, clean bathroom, intimate atmosphere. Right on Main Street, near great restaurants and shops. For those heading to the Metro-North station in Poughkeepsie, take the Ulster public bus. It runs seven days a week, cost 1.75 dollars, and best of all, it's small and rarely crowded.

S J, Yes the hostel has a parking in the back and driveway that will fit 4 or 5 cars. Also there is street parking in front. We were there for the 4th of July weekend and had no issue parking in the back. All the best.
