Remote and peaceful, Fundu Lagoon has a distinct Robinson Crusoe air with charming rustic buildings nestling on the shore of the Indian Ocean, shaded by thatched roofs made from sundried coconut palms. While crowds flock to Zanzibar, few have heard of the Pemba island, her little sister to the north, which remains largely undeveloped. Living up to the ‘Spice Islands’ nickname, cloves form a major part of the local economy. Magic is also embedded in the culture, with ju-ju witch doctors providing medicine and social cohesion. Only accessible by boat, the resort extends along a natural beach, where the lush jungle meets the sea. Fundu Lagoon’s staff are almost all from the local villages and bush babies, vervet monkeys and dolphins also call Pemba home. Whether relaxing by the infinity pool, wandering along the shore and watching local women collect seaweed for the beauty industry, kayaking through the mangroves or admiring the pristine coral gardens around nearby Misali island, days here can be as relaxed or fun-filled as you make them. A consistent winner of the Good Safari Guide ‘Best Marine Safari’ Award, Fundu Lagoon smoothly continues the safari experience for those arriving from the bush, as well as being a standalone destination for couples seeking a romantic bolthole or families and friends seeking a place to unwind and switch off.
Star ratings are intended to indicate the general level of features, amenities, and services to expect. This property is classified according to Giata.
This is a very special place, arrival only by boat, literally hidden in the shoreline jungle. There’s little to do here ( unless you are a diver) and that’s its beauty. Accommodation is in tented villas which are very comfortable. Ours ( No 6) had a great wooden balcony literally surrounded by jungle. Days consist of walking along the beach and maybe visiting the village ( would recommend this) and a little tour of the spice farm. Other than that’s it’s a little swimming, reading a book or having a cheeky mid afternoon siesta. Sundowners at the Jetty Bar bring perfect days to an end. The food is exceptional and the complimentary wine was great quality. We stuck with that but if you want to choose something else prices were very reasonable. Ellis Flyte whose idea it was to build Fundhu Lagoon was staying when we visited … what an inspirational and visionary lady. If you go … and you should if complete isolation is your thing … do read the book that’s in each room about the story of how FL was built. Enjoy … we did … and we know we will again when we return. Our only feedback … and this is not a criticism but ways to enhance .. 1. Have the little wooden foot baths at each of the villas to make it easier to wash off the sand and 2. Sell the beautiful masks that are dotted around the hotel in the hotel shop. They were exquisite

Thank you so much for your recent review of your holiday with us at Fundu Lagoon, and especially for your very kind comments about my design of the resort - I’m delighted that you enjoyed reading all about its creation. Whenever I look back at the book myself, I often think “how on earth did we manage it?!!” However, it was certainly worth all the effort as Fundu is so very special to me, so it’s wonderful to be able to share such an amazing place with our guests. I’m not sure why your footbath was missing as we have them for every tent. I can only apologise to you for this oversight, and I will speak to my manager and ask that housekeeping make sure that all of the tents have their footbaths in place. We are sometimes able to sell the masks dotted around the hotel and in the hotel shop, but this is can only be done on an ad hoc basis as the good masks tend to be hard to source and aren’t always readily available, and we can’t leave the hotel with empty walls! Thank you again for your lovely review – all of our staff will look forward to welcoming you back to Fundu Lagoon and will have a cocktail on the jetty bar standing by for you! Our arrival at Fundu Lagoon was the most scenic we have ever had. I will not spoiler, go and see it for yourself 😊 We felt truly welcome from the first moment and until our departure. This was indeed Robinson Crusoe experience mixed with barefoot luxury. We walked for kilometers on the white-sandy beach without being disturbed. At every meter, a beautiful seashell was waiting for us to pick it up (or rather to leave it there for the crabs to claim it as their home). We would not have missed one single sundowner, since the sunset was a ‘wow’ experience every evening.

I just loved reading your review of your recent stay with us at Fundu Lagoon, as you wrote it in such a way that one could easily imagine everything that you described, so thank you for that. I particularly appreciated the reference of not taking the beautiful seashells home with you too. As you saw, we are in a very privileged position of having some fantastic wildlife in our midst, and the crabs play an important role in our environment. When I was staying at the hotel myself, I wondered what a constant ‘thud’ sound that I could hear was and discovered a hermit crab doing his/her best to drag its new home along the decking of my tented accommodation, so these shells really do have an important role to play in the everyday life of crabs at Fundu. I am delighted that you had such a wonderful holiday with us. Thank you again for taking the time to write your review. It is very much valued. Ellis Flyte (Creator Director)

after 15 days of safaris, we spent a week at fundu lagoon; arrival by boat (10 minutes) from the port is unforgettable because the coast where the lodge is located is very wild; tall trees, and lush vegetation everywhere, and also on the beach; Hannes welcomed us and then headed to our bungalow; These are very well appointed tents, everything inside is made of wood; it's very pleasant; small swimming pool on a terrace; there is also a raised terrace with sofa and table; it's sensational; what we liked is that everything is designed on a large scale with space, at Fundu Lagoon; the designers really thought about this subject; we feel free; I really appreciated the large swimming pool at the lodge which is located high up; large terrace and beautiful views on all sides; a big thank you to Magube who runs the bar (he is also a football goalkeeper for a team from the 2nd village) he is very professional and very helpful, and very kind; for meals, in the restaurant, several choices for breakfast, lunch and dinner; it's perfect ; we really liked the seafood meals on the beach (barbecue, there is also gigit of lamb); we really appreciated the bar on the pier, in the evening from 6 p.m., because there is a little sea breeze which refreshes when you have aperitifs; because the bar is all made of wood, the armchairs with light blue cushions are superb; we were lucky enough to see the sunset, once, without the clouds; We really enjoyed the practice of mask and snorkel on the island of Misali; superb seabed, corals, fish etc etc thanks to Nemo and Sabrina (the goat mascot) who from afar looks like a Dik Dik we thank Salim and Bwanga, for our good times of laughs as well as all the staff we met but whose first names we did not remember and all those who work behind the scenes (kitchens, households) who are very efficient and discreet ; on a personal level, I encourage Hannes to continue to help the 3 surrounding villages; and to share with tourists, local life in these villages; (you can visit the 3 villages, which I did and it's an excellent memory); Hannes is a dedicated and very warm person, with sincere and deep empathy, with a heart on his sleeve; Fundu Lagoon employs many people living in the 3 villages and that is very good; the 'authentic image of the place' is reinforced; a big thank you to everyone, who on site, through your work, makes the place magical best wishes

We started our 2 week tour of Zanzibar in Stone Town and Fundu Lagoon was our second stop. We set off from Stone Town after an early breakfast and were taken to the Zanzibar airport domestic terminal to catch our short flight to Pemba island. The plane was a 12 seater Cessna and a fantastic experience - proper flying! The views were incredible and after around half an hour we touched down in Chake Chake. We had to sign a Pemba visitor register and then were met by the Fundu Lagoon driver who drove us (just over an hour) to Mkoani port. We then had to take a speed boat to the resort. This is the bit I was dreading - I hate boats. I explained this to the driver and he let me sit at the back with him (less bumpy) and said he would take it gently ("pole pole"). Everyone else sat astride a central seat, with luggage at the front of the boat. The ride took around 25 minutes (as we were going pole pole!) On arrival the the Fundu jetty we were met by the manager and after registering at reception were shown to the restaurant for lunch (it was around 1pm). We had a 3 course lunch and wine (all inclusive) while our luggage was taken to our "room". Our room was a fabulous thatched tent set on the edge of the beach with a balcony and steps down to loungers on our own section of beach. This is glamping in paradise! There is no air conditioning but several fans and a lovely sea breeze meant it just wasn't necessary. Each day there were 3 course lunches and dinners served in the restaurant, delicious breakfasts and cocktails in the Jetty bar while watching the sun set. One night there was a beach BBQ which was amazing. We didn't wear any footwear the whole time we were there - there really is such a thing as barefoot luxury! One day my partner did a snorkelling trip on nearby Misali island while I lounged by the pool. We also did a tour of the local village (right next door) to understand the local culture and see some spices being grown (modest clothing is a must). Most of the staff are from local settlements and some stay in a staff compound behind the hotel. They all said it was a good place to work and the service was impeccable. All the staff here ensure that everyone has a wonderful time and makes the most of their stay. As (almost) everything is all inclusive it's a very relaxed environment. Hakuna matata :) The best thing here (as far as we were concerned) was the wildlife. We saw giant millipedes, snakes, land crabs, hermit crabs, monkeys, flying foxes and bush babies. Top tip - put some banana on the railing outside your tent. The bush babies will smell it and come by after dark to eat it - right in front of your tent! Be sure to stay up to see them munching away!
On our way back the speed boat driver remembered me and made sure we went "pole pole" back to port. We were very sad to leave.

Your description of Fundu Lagoon as a “distant paradise” is an excellent choice of words, and I’m so pleased that given your extreme fear of boats, you found the courage to endure the boat ride to the hotel and that it didn’t put you off the rest of your holiday. As you saw for yourself, all our staff ensure that the comfort of our guests is their top priority, so I’m delighted that the “pole pole” approach worked well for you. I’m so pleased that you both enjoyed the daily variety of menus that we have on offer to our guests at Fundu Lagoon, and thank you for your kind comments about the impeccable standard of service you received from them, which will be much appreciated. I was also delighted to read that you enjoyed your tented accommodation with your own steps down to your area of the beach. “Glamping in paradise” made me smile – another top phrase of yours! It's also wonderful that you had an opportunity to do a village walk. You are correct in that 75% of our staff come from the villages which surround us, and their welfare is an important part of Fundu Lagoon. As I’m sure you saw, we have been instrumental in building a village school and contributing to all sorts of other elements that benefit their everyday lives. Whilst it is indeed wonderful that you got to see so much of the local wildlife which surrounds us, we do actively encourage our guests not to feed any of the animals, crabs and birds. Admittedly the bushbabies are very enchanting, but they have been known to whizz in and raid the canape trays during cocktail parties for our guests, so I’m sure that you understand my logic here! Thank you so much for taking the time to write your review. I’m thrilled that you and your partner had such a fabulous holiday at Fundu Lagoon. Ellis Flyte (Creator Director)

I'm a little delayed writing this review, but in doing so have been transported back to a glorious few days, in the most stunning location. Fundu Lagoon certainly did not disappoint. Our arrival by speed boat was great fun, and we received a warm welcome from Hannes. We'd booked the hillside tents, and were thrilled to be offered an upgrade to beachside accommodation, which was just beautiful. By the time we'd unpacked, it was time for a late lunch, which was delicious, although enormous (we didn't make it for our evening meal that night, which is pretty unheard of!) After a little snooze on the balcony, we rallied around to meet our friends at the sunset bar! Such a beautiful setting, we really did feel like we were a million miles from anywhere and so relaxed. Sitting on the decking early morning, watching the visiting Vervet Monkeys was magical. We enjoyed the trip to Misali island, which we'd combined with an early morning dolphin safari, we could not believe it when our captain started to turn direction and shouted "Whale!", we were treated to the sight of a whale and its calf, which was just incredible, alongside the many pods of spinner dolphins. On Misali Island, we enjoyed a delicious breakfast before a fabulous snorkeling experience, and I was lucky to see a shoal of around 40 elegant squid swimming past. The food was delicious throughout, and we were looked after incredibly well by our waiters Hamis and Chi Chi, who tried to teach us new Swahili words each evening, and gave us bananas to attract the bushbaby at night - with great success, thank you!! On our last day Hamis, escorted us on the village trek and to the spice farm, which I'd recommend, it was so informative and interesting to learn about all of the different herbs and spices and what they're used for. It was also great to see the support that Fundu Lagoon provides to the local village. It's really hard to sum up our experience at Fundu, so relaxing, the sheer beauty of the location, and the welcoming staff provided us with the most fabulous end to our trip. Thank you all.

Thank you so much for your amazing review of your recent stay with us at Fundu Lagoon. Depending on hotel occupancy, wherever possible it is always our pleasure to be able to upgrade our guests, so I’m delighted that Hannes was able to do this for you. The Vervet monkeys are always non-stop entertainment – one can lose hours watching their antics! I heard from another one of our guests that whales had been spotted when they went on a dolphin safari, so it’s terrific that the whales came out for your trip too, let alone the squid on parade! Our chefs will be delighted to hear of your wonderful comments on their food and the variety of menus that we have on offer for our guests. Thank you also for your suggestion to other potential guests of visiting the spice farm – it really is fascinating. We are very proud of our involvement in the Village welfare project, and with thanks also to the generosity of our guests, it continues to be a privilege to continue to help out the villagers. Feedback from our guests is genuinely appreciated, so thank you again for taking the time to write your review – it means a lot. Ellis Flyte (Creator Director) Hannes Wolters (General Manger)

The most magical stay of our lives. We chose Fundu Lagoon for our honeymoon after a safari and it was the best decision. It's a beautifully designed mix of high luxury and rustic off-grid between the jungle and the beach. It feels totally removed from the rest of the world, a real contrast to busy Zanzibar. The staff were all incredible, so friendly and welcoming. The food was excellent which was very important to us (especially as one of us is a chef) staying at an all-inclusive.
We spoke to some of the staff who would love to travel – perhaps you could work with them on stage schemes? The staff are a total credit to you and it would be great to help them with their wish to travel, especially as it could even further improve the service (if possible!)

Thank you so much for taking the trouble to write about your recent holiday at Fundu Lagoon. How interesting that one of you is a chef - our chefs will definitely appreciate your terrific comments on the food you had! Given that pretty much all of our supplies have to be brought over by boat, producing the variety of menus that we have on offer to our guests can at times be quite a challenge as you can imagine, but our chefs are incredibly inventive and always manage to come up with impressive results. I fully appreciate your suggestion about stage schemes, but these are incredibly complicated to set up, manage and run, so we feel our time and efforts are far better spent for us to concentrate on maintaining our Village Welfare project which is always at the forefront of our attention, and runs in tandem with Fundu. I’m so pleased that you both enjoyed your stay with us so much and thank you again for writing. Many congratulations on your marriage and all good wishes for a very happy life together. Where do I start! I've been lucky enough to travel the world since a young age, and stay in some wonderful, luxurious places, but this went above and beyond any previous travel destinations I've been to. I could write pages about this place but don't want to spoil it for those who are yet to go....the care and attention paid to guests by Hannes is second to none and the team he has there with him is fantastic. We were lucky to be staying at Fundu Lagoon during a relatively quiet week, so it really did feel like we were celebrities, with the place to ourselves! The accommodation is stunning, we went on a magical snorkelling trip to Misali Island (you can easily go Scuba Diving too but we were happy with snorkelling) and the food and drinks are delicious. We do have to apologise to the chef and the restaurant team for appearing like we didn't like the food, but we were on anti malaria tablets for the week (worst decision ever) and they made us feel really 'bleugh' so we struggled to eat or drink much the whole time we were at Fundu Lagoon. Such a shame as the daily menus available were amazing. The team were so thoughtful, as they clearly picked up that we weren't feeling well, with ginger being offered to us at every opportunity! Breakfast juice with ginger and carrot (delicious!), ginger tea, even ginger in our cocktails ha ha! The daily sundowners with a perfect sunset every night were a great treat, and you wouldn't believe how much nature there is. Stepping over millipedes, seeing dolphins out to sea, regular visits from the velvet monkeys, and teasing the bush babies out in the evenings with fruit - the cutest visitors ever! Unfortunately the weather didn't behave itself, with more rain than was expected, but it didn't matter. When you're staying at Fundu Lagoon, you really do feel like you've landed on a deserted island and with a good book and a cocktail, you don't even notice it's raining! A huge thank you to Hannes and the team at Fundu Lagoon, if ever anyone mentions looking to go to Zanzibar (where we went on honeymoon) we shall certainly say no, you HAVE to visit Pemba Island and Fundu Lagoon.

What an incredible review to read of your recent stay with us at Fundu Lagoon – I’m totally blown away by it. Hannes will be particularly thrilled to read your kind words, and I’m delighted that you felt that you were treated like celebrities. Every guest is special to all of us at Fundu Lagoon, and we like to make sure that we look after each person in as special a way as we can. Ah yes, the dreaded anti-maleria tablets. Such a shame that you couldn’t indulge in the food menus and just had to admire them from afar, but the same thing has happened to other guests. Some people sail through it, and others unfortunately like yourselves, get a bit of a reaction to the tablets. I’m glad that the team did their best to look after you until you felt better, and a decent set of cocktails always seems to help the situation! Thank you for your wonderful recommendation to others who might be thinking of visiting us – it is very much appreciated. With all good wishes for Christmas and 2024. If you are looking for a real Robinson Crusoe type of holiday, away from the modern life hustle and bustle, then this is the place. Remote, beautiful, quiet, paradise, awesome food, amazing staff is just a few of the words that come to mind. We rested, we scuba dived, we did some deep sea fishing, all in the most romantic remote location you can imagine.

We travelled on to Fundu Lagoon from Botswana, so the transfer was long, but boy was it worth the trip.
It is a slice of paradise when you get there and has been so beautifully put together. We can't imagine there being anywhere else like it on the planet. It really feels like a hidden gem.
Ramon and his team bent over backwards to make our stay special. From the moment we were greeted from the boat, we had every need catered for. The beach rooms are stunning and literally right on the beach. They were cleaned and re-set twice a day.
The restaurant served up beautiful food 3 times a day and we were lucky enough to have the private BBQ outside our room on our final night and it was incredible. The bar on the jetty is a perfect place to watch teh sunset and the communal pool nestled in the forest was idyllic.
Speacial mention also should go to Medi and his team at the dive centre. We did two dives whilst we were out there and they were awesome. My wife didn't have a diving qualification, but was still able to enjoy a discovery dive and was well looked after. The dolphin safari was also well worth it.
A truly magical trip and we hope to return back one day.

I’m so glad that you felt that your super long transfer from Botswana to Fundu Lagoon was worth travelling on all the various forms of transport that you had to take to reach our corner of ‘paradise’! I’m delighted that you were so well attended to by Ramon and his team, and also that you were impressed by our standard of house-keeping services and the food choices available to our guests. Having your own private BBQ outside your room is a wonderful way to end your stay at Fundu Lagoon – it is very special and creates superb lasting memories of a great holiday. Medi and his team will be thrilled to read your lovely comments about the diving excursions that you had with them. It’s great that your wife was also able to participate, and, as you saw for yourself, she was in very safe hands. I always try and take a dolphin safari whenever I visit Fundu – I never get bored of seeing these extraordinarily beautiful and entertaining mammals. Thank you so much for taking the trouble and time to write your review – it is genuinely appreciated and everyone at Fundu Lagoon will be looking forward to welcoming you both back for another visit. The corona pandemic doesn’t make traveling any easier. However, thanks to the great help and flexibility of Fundu Lagoon (poor Ramon; our airline changed its flight schedule almost every week, much to our annoyance and he had to rebook our domestic flights four times) we arrived at Fundu Lagoon in the middle of November.
It was our first visit since Corona, and I have to say our best decision! It was great to see that Fundu was able to keep most of its staff despite the difficult times. So, we saw many familiar faces again and we felt right at home. The originally planned 2 weeks became 3 weeks and we totally enjoyed every day.
Rusty told us that after almost 18 months in which the resort was closed; a lot of renovation had to be done. However, if we strolled through the resort, we would never have noticed this. It all looked flawless. Even when we were the only guests in the resort for a few days, we were totally spoiled.
Diving is our great passion and one of the reasons why we came back to Fundu. We were skeptical about the reefs, whether everything still looks as beautiful as it did 2 years ago. And yes - the reefs are all in great shape and you can still see a lot of fish. It was just a dream! We couldn't get enough and Medi and his crew did 31 dives with us! We were reluctant to leave Fundu Lagoon.
Thank you all (Ramon and Martie from Management, Kessy from Front Desk, Shamie, Engenia, Khamis and Wuanga from Restaurant/Bar, Medi, Faki and Musa from Diving Center and Ida from Spa/Housekeeping and all the others we do not know personally by name) who helped us to carry out our trip and gave us an unforgettable vacation!

How completely fabulous to read that you recently returned to Fundu for another visit, and 10/10 for your sheer tenacity in being so determined to get to Fundu that you had to change your plans a million times over! I’m so glad that Ramon and our bookings team were able to accommodate your new arrival time and flight schedule – we’re certainly in challenging times at the moment and Ramon and his staff have been wonderful in keeping everything afloat. I’m delighted that you extended your stay with us. We have kept on as many staff we can, but, as with many other businesses across the board, sadly we weren’t able to renew everyone’s contract. Hopefully this will change in the coming seasons. Whilst the resort was closed last year, the silver lining was that it did give Rusty and his team a chance to take their time and do a lot of renovation work that needed to be done at Fundu – normally it’s a frantic 6 week refurbishment between the end of one season and the opening of the next. Rusty will be thrilled to read your comments that everything looked as good as it ever did, and it must have been a real Robinson Crusoe experience to have had the resort to yourselves for a few days – you were quite rightly spoiled! It's lovely to read that the reefs at Misali are as magical as ever, and I am seriously, seriously impressed with your total of 31 dives with Medi and his crew – that must be some kind of a record! It is so kind of you to list as many of our staff’s names as you can recall and they will be absolutely delighted to read this review and see their names in print – that’s so thoughtful of you. Thank you for your incredible review – it is particularly appreciated in difficult times such as now and is so encouraging to both myself, Ramon and all of our staff. On behalf of everyone at Fundu Lagoon, I wish you and your family a healthy, happy and wonderful 2022. Ellis Flyte (Creator Director) Ramon Ribes (General Manager)

Hello, and thank you for your question. Yes, we have plenty of sun beds for our guests to use both on their individual terraces and also on the beach and at the poolside. If you wish to have a sun bed moved to another area our staff are always on hand to help.
We very much hope you will be able to visit us next year and we look forward to welcoming you to Fundu Lagoon.
Thank you for your enquiry. If you go to our website directly, you'll see that we are a Padi 5-Star Dive Resort. Go to the Home page, look for the Indian Ocean tag and scroll down, and you should be able to find all the information you need there, and please feel free to contact the resort directly for any further queries that you might have. As you can see above, a previous guest of Fundu Lagoon has dived with us and found it to be great, so do come and give it a go yourself!!

Thank you for your question. I would confirm the previous responses to your query - there can be short bursts of rain during November. We recommend that our guests use mosquito repellent, but there are also sand flies which some people can suffer from more than others.
We look forward to welcoming you to Fundu Lagoon next year. With all good wishes for Christmas and 2019.

Thank you so much for your enquiry. Currently only 3 of our accommodation suites have air conditioning units, but we provide overhead fans in all the other bungalows.
