Hubby and I checked into N'taba River Lodge and were greeted by both Bugs and Kieron (owners) From start to finish the service was exception. Bed comfy! and the food DELICIOUS!

It was during the load shedding week - rooms had generators ensuring we were still comfortable, although who spends that time in their room when they have glorius views feeding the soul around you.

The gardens were clean, well kept and beautiful.

We even treated ourselves to a massage at the spa - which was so relaxing.

We will definitely be back!

We had a good stay there. It’s in a lovely peaceful setting and the management were getting ready for Christmas with a few teething problems but they were kind and sorted them out very well! The location is damp and the whole site suffers from it which can be off putting. The Resaurant and spa are excellent and over all we had a great stay.

We have stayed at Ntaba River Lodge on many occasions. Each time has been with a London school group and the charity Broaden Out Their Horizons as part of our international exchange projects. Bugs and Kieron are always fantastic hosts and happy to accommodate all our needs, from the beautiful freshly cooked meals, daily packed lunches to birthday celebrations. They and all the staff make the stay a real home from home. Students and staff always hugely appreciate the stunning setting and the warmth of the welcome. We always look forward to coming back.

Sadly this establishment is not up to 4 star standard and what we have paid for. The rooms smell of damp, the establishment in general is run down and need some much needed TLC. A place with so much potential, it's just not looked after. The restaurant's food is terrible and not having much options in town we opted for dinner at the lodge. Extremely disappointed in the food and felt quite sick afterwards. Although the staff have a friendly nature their service skills and professionalism definitely lacks finesse. If you are thinking of visiting Port St Johns to explore the region, stay away. The place is a complete dump and just another municipality that has turned into a failed one. We booked for three nights at Ntaba River Lodge and forfitted two nights stay as we couldn't wait to get out of the place. Think twice before visiting the area and booking at this establishment.

We were a group of women that went to PSJ for a hike which unfortunately was cancelled due to the bad weather. We found the hotel quite amazing from where we had stayed 2 previous nights. The food was excellent, the views, grounds and rooms were immaculate and the staff and owners were very friendly and extremely helpful. We had had car trouble en route to PSJ and the owner went above and beyond to help us where he could - the establishment was one of the businesses hit by the floods - the bar and resturant were under water after our first nights stay - but Mr Moodley was ever so accomodating in organizing us food and transport eventhough they were suffering a major disaster. Thank you Mr and Mrs Moodley for the kindness and compassion that you showed to us stranded ladies we shall forever be grateful.

Dear Tracy, We were in a predicament when you arrive, but you guys were also very patient and understanding of our situation. Your friendliness and positive attitude helped us also in keeping our spirits up. We are always at hand to assist our guests, more so when it is a group of ladies who needed some assistance. So glad that we could offer assistance and loved our short interactions with you. Take care and stay safe. Hope to meet again soon. Kind Regards Mrs.Bugs Moodley

Beautiful setting and lovely rooms BUT the mouldy smell was huge and completely overwhelming. Other rooms were the same so we couldn't move. I realise there has been an lot of rain but this was definitely mould and it was very strong and terrible. Other than that it is a lovely place. My husband ate the best T-Bone steak he has ever had. My mussel starter couldn't have been any fresher. Apart from the mold smell I would highly recommend it. Take mosquito spray. We didn't and were sorry about it.

We stayed for two nights and we regretted it. No Wifi at all despite we paid for a executive room. The food at the restaurant was totally unacceptable, so was breakfast. Basic beyond. The staff was sleeping behind the counter ! Service was bad. Please do not book this place . Stay away !!! TV not working. Light bulbs not working. We waited for ten minutes at the gate before they opened. Electronic Safe did not work.

It looks nice on the internet, and the view at and from the hotel, towards the river, is nice.

We didn't like the stuff attitude, that both at reception and at breakfast, was MUCH BELOW our expectations. The rooms (on the ground level) are filled with moisture odor (we asked and eventually moved to the upper level floor).
The stuff attitude at breakfast was "cold to non existent" though the food itself was OK.
לדעתנו המקום לא שווה את המחיר אותו הם דורשים!

Just had a weeks stay at N'Taba. First the good... the property is gorgeous, well maintained and tranquil. It's exactly the sort of place you can see yourself doing yoga by the pool or tai chi on the lawn. But since I do neither of those things, I'll just say it's picturesque. There are two pools by the spa (*) and restaurant/bar. The rooms are similarly nice. At first I felt like I was missing out of having the patio seating area that the ground floor rooms have, but once I got a chance to be in my upper floor room I realized I got the better deal. There more privacy on the upper floor and on a nice day you can leave the sliding door and drapes open and enjoy the fresh air without anyone looking in. The very high ceilings with the thatched roof also adds to the appeal of the room. While I never figured out how to use the ceiling fan (I'm convinced that I was missing a remote) the air conditioner was perfect for the cusp of fall, especially if you have it pointing at the bed. The bathroom is spacious and there's a separate tub and shower. There's good hot water in the rooms but in the morning it may slow to a trickle or even stop if too many are using the water. (I mean the entire shower stops, not just the hot water). This didn't last long and it always came back so it's more a quirk, but not a true issue.

So now the less good... the lack of decent wifi makes it near impossible to work while here, or do anything else internet wise. There is one network that's open to guests (the other must be for their camera system) but it (in theory) only is usable by the restaurant/pool area. I say in theory because I could never get internet on it even when connected to the router. Colleagues had more hit or miss use and some were even able to do full VPN/Presentation meetings over the wifi. Most frustrating is the wireless does not reach the rooms. The owner seemed annoyed that this would even be a concern because "it's rural here". Note to readers, rural might affect internet speeds or how much data they allow guests to use (I.e. probably not streaming shows all night long) but it has nothing to do with property coverage. That just takes additional routers to make a mesh across the property. It's purely infrastructure investment. Even small guest houses I've stayed at have multiple to reach across floors.

The bar only sells wine by the bottle and I never tried for hard alcohol. Breakfast was solid and what you'd expect from a property that includes breakfast. Dinner was also good but there's the quirk that they take the orders in the the evening before dinner and it's a fixed menu. The appetizer and dessert are set and you can choose between one of two main courses. And it's prix fixed so nothing available a la cart. As a result, I found myself more often walking to the lodges two doors down and having drinks and dinner from their restaurant which had a much much more expansive menu and affordable prices. While I don't mind paying more for dinner, I want my choices to be made off my cravings, not the limited fixed options.

For what it's worth, and peeking through the windows of the other adjacent lodges, N'taba has the better rooms, but for Internet, meals and drinks you're better off going next door. N'taba's management must realize this because in multiple places Onhs property are signs saying that "unauthorized food may not be brought in and consumed on the premises". This annoyed me probably more than anything else (well, except for the rural wifi comment). I've never stayed anywhere where a paying guest was told they can't bring their own food to their room. I don't know if this is ever enforced, but it just left a bad taste in my mouth seeing the sign.

I will say the staff at N'taba, other than my initial interaction with the owner upon checking in, were very pleasant and they are very careful to quickly learn guests names and address them by name when interacting with you. Again, a nice spa/resort touch.

*oh yea, the spa... I never got a chance to experience this. Before we arrived we had heard that all the spa staff had left the property but someone came mid way through our stay. A couple coworkers were able to get massages and services as a result, but depending on staffing your mileage may vary.
