I really enjoyed my stay at The Spotted Grunter resort in Port St Johns. The room was clean and had everything that I needed. The bathroom was amazing, with a great shower. The locality is brilliant. Just far enough out of town to escape a lot of the busy activity and still near enough to be convenient. The staff were friendly and helpful and the owner Vernon couldn't have been more pleasant and helpful.
There is a convenient slipway and jetty for boaters and the resort made us packed breakfast and lunch every day. The little shop is well stocked with fishing gear. I would recommend this resort to anybody visiting Port St Johns, whether for fishing or just a family getaway.

A great spot to chill out, good location, receptionists very pleasant. Nice restaurant area, good food. Bathroom area a bit confined, toilet seat requires attention reported to reception. Rates a bit steep for this area.

good location. tiny living area. beds are literally in the kitchen. hot water in the shower seldom works. i expected much more from the pictures online. i would have expected the 4 sleeper to be a 2 bedroom, instead theres one tiny room and the 2 single beds are part of the kitchen. theres barely place to walk around once your baggage is in.

First time to the Transkei and what a lovely experience it was. The live music and relaxed atmosphere is exactly what I needed to break free from the hustle and bustle of Johannesburg. The owners of the lodge took us out on an evening boat cruise which was easily the highlight of our trip. Will most certainly be back!

When booking was made a wheelchair friendly room was requested and confirmed by the hotel. On arrival they had no wheelchair friendly room booked and we ended up with a room with a step. The aircon didn't work and when we complained we were moved to a room where the fridge didn't work. When going out to dinner we found the key wouldn't lock the door. They had to change the lock. The shower has hot water for a short while and then gets cold. Family in a similar room had the same problem. Manager said she would speak to the owner who was away on holiday and come back to us. Still waiting a month later.

Good day Neil, thank you for your review. The managers and staff went out of their way to help you and tried their utmost to make your stay comfortable. This despite continuous threats that you would give us a poor review. The problems that you experienced were as a result of load shedding which was out of our control yet we still did our best for you which clearly was not enough. I apologise for your bad experience and we will do our best to make what we can right going forward. Regards Vernon

We stayed here for 2 nights en route to Durban from CapeTown. Port St Johns was convenient. We had booked dinner bed and breakfast but the booking service failed to note this. We couldn't have had dinner on our day of arrival as the restaurant is not open on Sunday evenings….no one had informed us. Although the manager was helpful in advising us on the couple of eating places in town it was not what we had wanted to do after such a long drive. He also advised us that although we had booked and paid for DBB the system showed us as self catering which caused us difficulties at breakfast and then dinner the following day with the waiting staff declining to serve us. Finally sorted by our departure day….but trying to settle the balance caused the reception staff difficulties which delayed our departure and caused us concern as we had a good drive to north of Durban.
I am sure the new manager will sort out all these problems and also the slowness of service, the surly attitude and lack of customer interaction in the dining room!
On the plus side there are photo opportunities at PSJ airstrip and northwards along the coast The resident monkeys and birdlife are interesting too. The wooden cabin we stayed in was tired and none of the windows fully closed. Sitting inside was limited as although we were a couple we had two beds in the living area as well as a double bedroom. The sofa was a tilt and fold bed and very uncomfortable to sit upon. Maybe we just chose the wrong accommodation. I would phone next time rather than use the website to ensure we got what we needed.

Myself and 2 friends stayed for 3 nights and had the best time ever, very clean rooms and property in general with access to the river right from the resort which has multiple boats and paddle boats. The food is really good and very decently priced. Enjoyed every minute of our stay.

2nd time in a year to stay there in exactly the same unit, but gas geyser still problematic. Child ended up being burned. Breakfast and Dinner experience is terrible. One person in particular behaves as if she does you a favour by serving you. You also wait forever for someone to arrive to take your order. Dorado was far overdone (burned on one side) - at least I received a refund for just the dorado on the seafood platter. Seafood platter (and other meals) are overpriced and the only good thing was the sauce and chips. The bar offered a variety of only 3 bottles of red wine. I was embarrassed that family from the Netherlands opted to have dinner at a different venue. The location is fantastic and this is basically the only reason I stay there. This establishment does not deserve 3 stars.
