The first things you notice is the stunning views of 2nd Beach and the welcoming, professional staff. What you miss when you leave is the sound of the waves, the company of the friends you made, and the simple, but really tasty food. I spent 4 day nights here as a solo traveler and was well taken care of- from help getting trips planned, to taking an emergency run to the pharmacy, and generally being included in whatever was going on. I'm looking forward to returning! (ratings on rooms and cleanliness are just about it being rustic-its a backpackers, not a 5 star hotel-neither negatively impacted by experience)
Fun place to stay. Friendly, helpful staff. Not too much to do around the area so the two nights were enough for us. A bit too cold in winter. Liked the restaurant which had an easy going, open-minded feel.
I love spending my december holidays jumping from one backpackers to the next and Amapondo was incredible! The people, surroundings and experience! Firstly the food is the best food in port st. johns, don’t even bother looking for another place to eat. It is incredibly tasty and the menu changes slightly which is something I personally love. We were staying in a glamping tent for two nights and moved to Seaview cottage for another two nights. Glamping was comfortable with a double bed inside and table and chairs outside. It also has a plugpoint. The Seaview cottage was beautiful but interior could be upgraded in some places. Crockery could also do with an upgrade. I also feel like it could be cleaned a little better ie webs and dust, but nothing major. The owners and other people who stayed there were lovely and so welcoming. I’ll definitely be back for another stay.…
My friends and I camped at Amapondo over new years and it was the most magical experience. The warm, generous and awesome owners (George and Natalie) and their amazing staff made us feel at home during our week there. They arranged hikes, a tour and lunch in gorgeous settings and they were all just absolute legends. The views are our of this world and it was just such a fantastic trip. Thank you Amapondo! Can't wait to come back.
From the time I arrived till the day I left (about 6 nights in total) I felt completely Safe and Welcome. A bunch of us chose to Camp while we were there and the view is absolutely stunning from the Campsite! All the staff were very Kind and Helpful. George and Natalie (The Owners of Amapondo Backpackers) were absolutely phenomenal! They even sent my Favourite hat that I left behind all the way from port st John's to JHB at no cost. P.s George is an absolute ledge!!!
We travelled to PSJ and stayed at Amapondo from 31 Dec – 3 Jan. A stay at a backpackers is a lucky packet experience because you never know what you will get (in hosts and fellow travellers). Our stay at Amapondo was a most memorable lucky packets-value for money stay! The new owners Nathalie and George do the most to make you feel welcome and part of the Amapondo “family” (even if you are staying for just 1 night). The highlight of our stay was a day visit to Magwa tea estate, magwa falls and angel falls topped by lunch at a charmed mountain lodge in Mboyti. George was the perfect guide on this adrenaline packed day trip 😊 Look forward to visiting Amapondo in the future with friends!
A friend of mine and I visited Amapondo Backpackers, there was a group of white guys chilling having drinks. My friend and I were also about to order drinks before the server informed us that NO LOCALS ALLOWED. I was shocked and disgusted at the blatant racism and discrimination. You use our name and call yourselves Amampondo Backpackers but no Pondos allowed. Why come operate here if you have a problem with natives? Disgusting
Amampondo was very pleasant and comfortable I think your emails and phone calls to remind us about our visit its more welcomed and also make us to keep on coming thank you so much and continue doing it again
Always good, excellent food and great service! I have used this place as a base for my NPO teams since 1985, when it was still an orphanage. The Amapondo Backpackers is still our home for the teams, and I hope to keep it that way!
The location is perfect to have a good atmosphere in that extraordinary coastarea. The bar atmosphere and the adventure events with others were great. Unfortunately the shower does't work proper, no hot water unless we beg two times to check the showe.
