We have just had a one stay at your lodge and we were very confused when we left. We read up on trip advisor some of the comments and must agree this place has an identity crisis. Where is the new management team and where is the chef? We paid premium rates to stay in the luxury chalets, but young campers took over the facilities including the bar area and pool. Staff also took over bar area with television showing sports all day and excessively loud. Certainly no peaceful sundowner, not the place for quiet time. Although beautiful room, no attention to the maintenance, telephone broken, no torch in place allocated ( apparently broken as well), only 1 towel - there were two of us, no soaps, shampoos. No help from staff with luggage when we were leaving. No master key. Altogether a disappointing stay.

Our convoy stayed at Shakawe River Camp Site right next door to the Lodge in Shakawe; stunning camp site, lovely clean facilities, beautiful surroundings. Through our tour guides (Bhejane Adventures) we had access to the Lodge facilities - pool, bar and boats, which was totally amazing. The birding boat trip on our first morning was incredible - Pells Fishing Owls, Fish Eagles snatching fish out the water right in front of us, Skimmers, Goliath Herons... it was very beautiful. The sunset cruise on the Okavango later the same day was something I will never ever forget. It definitely helps having tour guides that are so knowledgable and so willing to spend time with you to help you make the most of your stay, not so sure you'd get the same results travelling solo!

If you're looking for a well run, beautifully designed and decorated lodge on the Okavango panhandle, Shakawe River Lodge is the place. The awe inspiring entrance with a soaring thatch roof and a view of the river beyond is a great start to your visit. Contemporary African decor with touches of luxury make the whole place easy on the eye. There's a flat screen TV in the chalet if you get tired of looking at the river. Comfortable beds with the requisite Egyptian cotton sheets and aircon! I loved it. I didn't eat dinner but breakfast was generous and the cappucino was a bonus!

We there in April 2018. The setting is amazing . The accommodation is quite stunning. The staff were sadly totally unsupervised. They were totally unmotivated and uninformed as to how to run a lodge. There were no selections of wines, very little variety in the bar, no glasses, walkways and decks were not swept, no towels at the pool, the staff seemed to spend their time on duty looking at the one TV that is above the bar. Breakfast was not included, and cost a huge amount if you decided to have it there. We were a group of twelve guests, and had one lady serving us. She could not cope. So so sad, because the setting is amazing.

From the moment we arrived, we were given a very warm welcome, Marieke and the rest of her Team were great. The place is just out of this world!!! The food was delicious, the chef interacted with all the guests making us feel at home. The boat ride was also refreshing and fantastic...We had a really great time there and will definitely be visiting again soon...Keep up the great work...

I struggle to understand how this place has such good reviews. We stayed in many places through South Africa, Namibia and Caprivi and a few in botswana and Zim. This has a lovely lodge entrance and riverside but somehow everything stops there. What's more the lodge is very expensive and empty. I cannot imagine that this place will be running under this management in 5 years.

We had a friendly greeting at the lodge on arrival but had booked the campsite so were directed around. We had chosen the luxury/dome tents with beds. We took one look and decided to camp with our small tent instead. They are must, were still being cleaned at 3pm. The ablutions were poor and the worst thing is there is no view and they are in trees 10m behind the bar with not even space to sit outside the tent.

We looked at the campsites which were better although ablutions still pretty poor and plug points were not clean and sometimes looked electrically unsafe. Have river view which is ok but nothing spectacular for this area.

Our biggest complaint was the staff were generally unmotivated and seemed disengaged. We went to the lodge area to use the wifi and eat lunch at 3.30pm. There were no guests there and the staff use the nice bar area as their communal area to watch tv and talk so we felt we were intruding. We ordered two chess and tomato sandwiches, the only vegetarian option and were told by the bar staff firstly to wait for the waiter who had gone to the campsite and should be back in a bit before we could order. When they arrived we were told there was no cheese. Finally they agreed to use mozzerella which they did have, asked us did we want it now (clearly hoping we would say no), then returned 30mins later with only one. There was more of the same in the evening as we went back for a drink and felt awkward as several staff members were at the bar watching botswana's got talent.

This place could be a perfectly nice lodge and campsite if the campsite was better maintained and the service was a LOT better. Staff really don't look busy as it was virtually empty so there should not have been any issues. It has a long way to go. We booked 2 nights and stayed 1.

Response from shakaweriverlodge, Owner at Shakawe River Lodge

Dear Joseph T, Although it is unfortunately to late for you, you will be pleased to know that an experienced European couple of managers has arrived two weeks ago to take over the lodge management and supervise our 25 staff members. We are extremely sorry to read your review and confused about the food order, which I personally checked : it shows that you had only ordered 1sandwich, so they must have misunderstood your request and we apologise for this. I shall ask the new managers to make sure this never happens again. Kind regards

The best part of this review first, room was a double, very clean and spacious

Now the worst, staff are unprofessional and very difficult to spot.
It was hard to tell the guests from the staff.

Apart from the room which was supposed to be a river view and was actually just bush the rest of the site looks like it hasn't been maintained or cleaned in years

Bar choice was limited, food was ok, breakfast was appalling

Power was constantly on and off all day and night, had to unplug the TV so it stopped starting up every time

Look around for somewhere else

The campsite 4 had an obscured view of the river. It was close to the ablutions block. Assistant manager Mark was exemplary - unlike the rest of the staff.
We did 2 boat rides - enjoyable. We left a day early.

The Shakawe River Lodge has huge campsites on the banks of the Okavango River. The location and view are fantastic and you can hear hippos all night long. The staff is very friendly, there is free wifi at the reception area and the whole place is kept very clean. The italian chef prepares delicious pizza.

Can really recomend the tents, very cheap but with nice beds and bedding event towels and it gets cleaned dayly!
Even if you are only driving by, just do so for the Italian shef's Pizza, honestly the best I have ever tasted, even in Italy!!
Good wifi and nice bar and lodge setting on the river
Would not recomend boat hire unless its September and you want to fish, other than birdlife not a lot to see
Friends camped at stand #2, great site and ablution
