Kafunta is located overlooking the Luangwa River plain where animals can be seen at all times including hippos, elephants, impalas and a selection of birds from The upper and lower decks of our clean, comfortable chalet. Our chalet would easily accommodate four people with beds on the main floor and loft area. Daily laundry service was a great benefit. There’s a large deck at the main lodge, where dining and the bar are located, as well as a pool and hot tub. The main feature at Kafunta is the game drives in the park, accessed by pontoon ferry or a short drive to the main gate. We saw a wide variety of wildlife including leopards, lions, elephants, giraffes, hyenas, wild dogs and their young. The prize for cutest babies goes to the elephants imo but lion cubs are a close contender. Two drives every day always provided a great wildlife experience and our guide, Paul, seemed to know where to be at the right time. We also experienced some stargazing and got great pictures of the Milky Way. The vehicle was an open safari car with elevated seating providing great views. The park can be busy near the main gate area but we often had sightings all to ourselves. Kafunta lodge provides good meals with an excellent buffet lunch and a more formal evening meal. Light breakfast served before the morning drive and a snack before the afternoon drive. You will not be hungry. Meals are served at individual tables, which I prefer to the communal type at some lodges. Staff are friendly and sincerely accommodating. Kafunta is about a 45 minute drive from Mfuwe airport. We were very pleased with our four day stay here.

Dear Roxtor, Thank you for taking the time to post a review following your recent stay at Kafunta River Lodge. And thank you for your kind feedback on our guide and services such as our dining experience. I'm glad you enjoyed our private dinners, we also think a right combination between hosted tables (breakfast/lunch) and private tables (dinner) is a nice way to enjoy a vacation. I'm glad you enjoyed the large suite accommodation, as well as the complimentary laundry. It seems like you had great wildlife sightings, including lion cubs! That's wonderful. I hope you will consider visiting us again on a future trip to Zambia. Most sincerely, Izzy

Wonderful staff, couldnt be more helpful, great guides, Lisa & Betty were so lovely. Rooms had plenty of space, plenty of electirical sockets (English type) , room safe, good bathroom. balcomny overlooking the wetlands, hippos outside at night,. Journey to park was a bit long & bumpy- wish we had gone a few weeks later when the pontoon was built.
Saw 7 amazing leopards, elephants, lions, giraffe, exotic birds. TEa breaks & sundowners always had amazing views,
Pool was small but perfect for the breaks in the safaris, and loved the natural hot tub
WiFI is very erratic but thats down to the weather.
Super little village to shop & support local charities
Wish i'd known about the excellent free laundry service- could have brought much smaller luggage!
Rooms prepared for daytime relaxing and night sleeping every day & very clean & good safety systems for walking around in dark

Dear Jacqui, Thank you very much for taking the time to post a review about your recent visit to Kafunta River Lodge! I'm so happy to read that you had a good stay and you enjoyed our staff and services and that you had great game viewing! The first month of operations (we reopen in April) is always tricky with the road to the main gate, as while rains persist we are unable to grade the road so it does make it bumpy. The pontoon is usually put in place in early May, it also depends on the river level. This is one of the reasons we offer lower rates in April and May, to compensate for the disagreement. As for the laundry, I'm sorry if this wasn't clear - it is listed in our inclusions/exclusions shown on our travel documents. We're happy to offer complimentary laundry on a daily basis. Let's hope you can return for another visit in the future. Most sincerely, Izzy

I've been to a number of lodges and safaris throughout the African continent, and must say that Kafunta Safaris stands out with its dreamy location, excellent service, and tasty food! Traveling alone with my 7-year old, we never had a dull moment, and enjoyed the fantastic view over the wildlife passing by as we were swimming, relaxing in the natural hot tub, or enjoying our breakfast/lunch/dinner. The place is perfect for families! And so is the food. The staff are like friends, and make your stay feel like you're home! Being a photographer, the guides knew what I was looking for and made sure we had good game drives starting as early as needed! Kafunta is a place we will always remember and we can't wait to revisit this amazingly beautiful place!

We are just back from Safari at Kafunta Lodge, Three Rivers and Island Bush Camp and we have had a truly wonderful time! Kolo and Betty, front of house at Kafunta made us feel so welcome and nothing was ever too much trouble. The Lodge is beautiful, very clean and comfortable with views across the plains and water right in front so plenty of animals visit throughout the day. The food has been excellent! TJ at three rivers could also not have been more helpful, amazing views from the lodges and an opportunity to sleep in a bed open to the stars (under a mosquito net) very special. Martin was also lovely at Island Bush Camp and although this is a more rustic camp, a fabulous experience for a couple of nights. Our guide, Ernest, who was with us for all of our game drives, and our game walks (we were out every morning and every afternoon for 10 days) was so knowledgeable and experienced. There was no question he couldn't answer and his story telling ability made the information so easy to take in and understand. We learnt so much about the animals, birds, trees, and plants but also the community and life in Zambia. Our 'spotter' and trainee guide Kevin was also excellent and will make a fabulous guide very soon when he's passed his exams - good luck Kevin! And Mr Mike with the gun, who led us safely on our walking safaris told us all about how they were dealing with poaching and training the poachers to become game keepers and involving the community in the conservation of the national parks. Thanks to their experience and knowledge, we were able to see many animals that I'm not sure we would have found without them! We would go back in a heartbeat!

We had an amazing safari 8 day safari with Kafunta Safaris. We stayed at all three camps, the main Kafunta River Lodge, Island Bush Camp, and Three Rivers Camp. We were well cared for at all camps by the wonderful staff. All the meals were delicious and they did a good job of keeping us all well fed, and even did a great job catering to my vegetarian diet. The lodging at all the camps was comfortable, private, well appointed with wonderful views. Our guide, John Mwape and our tracker Paul were superb. They worked hard to make sure we got to see everything we could possibly see. I am a devoted bird-watcher and we were lucky to be paired up with John as he is also passionate about birds and he helped me add over 70 species to my life list! Highly recommend Kafunta Safaris! If you have always wanted to go on safari, go to South Luangwa NP in Zambia. The Zambian people are wonderful hosts and you will not be disappointed. Your travel dollars help the local people which helps ensure the safety and continued existence African wildlife.

We only stayed one night at Kafunta River lodge, after staying at both bush properties for five nights before. The River Lodge has a bit more a hotel feel, for those who prefer it. I must confess that I enjoyed having a bit of Wifi at the main area, but was still able to appreciate being disconnected in our chalet. I think that this is necessary to really appreciate the safari experience. We also enjoyed the luxury of a very relaxing massage with Maria before going out on a game drive. The location on the floodplane was wonderful, especially as we stayed back on our final morning to catch our flight and were still able to enjoy watching the animals, including some impala leaping around. Our chalet had excellent views of baboons as well, who spent time just outside the closed in balcony area. Our transfer from Three Rivers was like a game drive itself, and we had an excellent evening game drive with David and Zagwa, who made sure that I finally saw a zebra (several actually, including a baby) up close. We also visited a leopard eating her kill (an impala) up a tree with a hyena waiting for her to drop it. We learned that hyenas tend to be more solitary when there are more leopards than lions, as they can steal their kills. Somehow, Zagwa and David spotted a chameloen in a tree, at night! The game are a bit richer here than at the bush camps, but you do encounter more people and vehicles. We were excited to see Jacob from Island Bush Camp to greet us, as the bush camps had closed. This was the close of a wonderful first safari experience, and we are so glad that we chose to stay with Kafunta Safaris.

Dear Amanda, Thank you so much for taking the time to add a review for Kafunta River Lodge, even if your stay was very short! And thank you for your dedicated reviews of our other camps, where you stayed longer. Your itinerary was a bold one - starting with our most remote and rugged camp! But we're glad you enjoyed every single day out on safari and every night out in the camps. Having no Wi-Fi at the camps is a delight indeed, a proper way to disconnect and immerse yourself in nature. Kafunta River Lodge is a bit different because, as it is located near Mfuwe, we are lucky to have full electricity and access to more amenities. And wifi allows our guests to share their experience with their friends and loved ones! For you, it was perfect to end this way. We're so happy you understood our various properties for what they are and offer: "an experience of a lifetime"! But we hope it won't be your last safari! Thank you again for trusting Kafunta Safaris with your first African experience. Most sincerely, Izzy

I spent 14 nights at Kafunta River Lodge where I hosted two separate photographic groups. Last time I was in South Luangwa was 10 years ago, so I was very eager and excited to get back to such a marvellous place – and Kafunta did not disappoint!

From the word go the service was exceptional, from being picked up at the airport and guests being given their own name-tagged water bottles, to the comfy and spacious rooms, the constantly smiling and attentive staff – attention to detail is spot on and the everyone was made to feel comfortable instantly. The lodge itself is beautiful and offers stunning views, particularly for sunset, and plenty of opportunities for spotting different birds and mammals across the wetlands.

But the real reason we were there was for the game drives and wildlife sightings. John, our guide, was an absolute joy to work with and really went out of his way to accommodate our groups and any wants / needs – and always with a smile and pleasant sense of humour. We had leopard every day, plenty of lions (with cubs), wild dogs making a kill and that’s not to mention all the hippos, elephants, hundreds of birds and general game that’s in abundance at every turn. A real photographic paradise, boosted truly by the genuine expert service and luxury comfort by that of Kafunta and its lovely staff.

Dear Samuel, Thank you so much for your detailed, and very kind, review! I'm so happy to read that your two waves of photographic workshops have gone well and that you have enjoyed our lodge. We were honoured to host you, and we certainly hope you will return for more! South Luangwa doesn't stop to impress us at every turn. Leopard sightings are amazing, and you will have noticed a big increase in wild dog sightings since your previous visit ten years ago. It's all great news for us all! Thank you for your positive feedback, which I'll share with the team. Most sincerely, Izzy

I went here on a Tailormade holiday. The welcome I received from Lynda and her staff was superb. Everything was explained fully as to how the place was run. The food was excellent and as I like to try the local cuisine they provided it for me. My safari driver Solomon was great fun & knowledgeable as was Bright who was training. After each game drive you were met with a damp face flannel to freshen up. Soft drinks and coffee were readily available as was Laundry service should it be required. I could not praise this place more highly. The staff had a lot to contend with as I have a slightly off the wall sense of humour which the staff all got & hopefully enjoyed?

During our holiday in Zambia we’ve stayed for four nights in the lodge The location of the lodge around 20 minutes drive from Mfuwe. It has its own pontoon to the national park. This is fantastic, because in this way you’ll be very fast in the national park in an area, which is more quiet than the area around the main gate. The lodge is almost at the river. It’s a very quiet and safe place. We’d a big bungalow. Everything was very clean. You’ll get the meals on a platform, where you can see a lot of animals. Some of the animals for example hippos come really close. The food is very delicious. All of the employees and guides were very nice. Our trips to the national park were fantastic. We’ve seen leopards every day. Even the lodge is expensive, it’s absolutely worth to stay there.. Thanks a lot to the management and the staff for an unforgettable stay.

Our stay at Kafunta was an amazing experience from beginning to end. The staff are all so friendly and welcoming, that it felt like staying with your extended family. All the facilities were top notch and it was hard to believe at times that we were in the middle of the wilderness.
The bush camps were excellent value and offered a different perspective on the park and its wildlife. Would recommend this experience to anyone wanting to visit Africa.

Hi Mark, this is Izzy with Kafunta Safaris (I’m the marketing manager and have been with the company for 8 years and in South Luangwa for 13). Tse-Tse flies are a bit of a novelty in South Luangwa as they’ve only been more obvious in the past few years. But their distribution is limited to more remote areas with very dry mopane forests. So for example, in the main Mfuwe/central area of the park, they are not so frequent (one of the reasons why Alan, who commented above, didn’t see them in November at Kafunta River Lodge). They are observed closer to our remote camps Three Rivers Camp and Island Bush Camp when on game drives (when crossing those mopane areas), but not within the camps themselves. If you plan on combining Kafunta River Lodge and our remote camps on your visit, then considering coming in June and July may be the best way to avoid them completely. From September onward, as the bush dries out and it gets very hot, then Tse-Tse annoyance will increase. But in any case, they are not a huge issue. Saying that everyone responds differently to them, with some people not attracting them at all while others seem to react poorly to bites. Sadly, there are no effective insect repellents for them. We always suggest avoiding wearing dark colors (black/dark blue), which seem to attract them. I hope this will help. You can always email us for more information.

Hi there Sakshiabc. I'm Izzy, the reservations manager at Kafunta River Lodge. To give you an idea many lodges close from January until March, while the more remote bush camps close from November until May. This is due to the probability of rains. When rains start abundantly, it becomes very difficult to drive around due to the nature of the soil in the park. Lodges that are very near the main gate, and have access to "all weather roads" (elevated) are operating. But your road network drops greatly, is more limited in drives one can do. And the probability of getting stuck in the mud is high. BUT saying that, if it doesn't rain much, then it's stunning. Everything is green. No one can tell you what the rains will be like. It has been raining now for a couple of days but it can dry off again. Yes, animal sightings are harder just because of the vegetation. But plenty of birds (migrants) and still lots of opportunities to see plenty of wildlife. It is just a VERY different season (called green season, or emerald season but also secret season...) When it comes to Kafunta River Lodge, we are closed from Jan 5 to Mar 31. It is not worth keeping the lodge open during this time and we prefer to use the slow time to renovate and repair. Most sincerely, Izzy
