The South Luangwa National Park marks the end of the Great Rift Valley, one of the last remaining unspoilt wilderness areas and possibly the finest wildlife sanctuary in Africa. It is through this that the great meandering Luangwa river runs, with its ox bow lagoons, riverine supported woodlands and large plains, all of which play host to huge concentrations of game including elephant, buffalo, leopard, lion, giraffe, hippo and over 450 species of birds. Luangwa River Camp sits nestled under an ancient ebony grove on the banks of the Luangwa River overlooking the game rich area known as the Luangwa Wafwa. This small and intimate camp with just five bush suites, along with its setting and location creates a real “wow” factor and a romantic feeling simply flows through the camp. The subtly decorated bush suites with brick walls and thatch roof each have ensuite bathrooms with sunken bathtubs looking out onto your own private corner of Africa. Both the bedroom and bathroom are afronted with large sliding doors leading onto a decked area allowing a lovely breeze into the room and great views onto the river. The main area stretches over various elevated decked levels amongst which a tempting double plunge pool with a waterfall linking the two is situated. Seating areas around the pool or in the shade of the open plan bar on the highest level all offer uninterrupted views across the river and into the National Park. Luangwa River Camp offers all the creature comforts of a lodge yet retains the intimacy and privacy of a bush camp.

As soon as I arrived the lodge, it felt like home. When I add the exquisite service of all staff, the delicious food, the experienced guide John, host Bianca, the magic setting, I can only say this is a unique lodge which I would recommend anyone.
The rooms are very spacious and perfectly equipped, laundry service is so handy as well as the night watch who takes care of you when returning to your cabin. Crossing the Luangwa river daily to reach the park gives an extra touch. Also a big plus, a massage, right in your room, very nicely prepared lunch box....all these extra details turn your holiday into a very relaxing stay.

My second time with Robin Pope, we came back expecting great things and we were not disappointed!

The accommodation is delightful with bath and shower and plenty of hot water. The rooms are very private and secluded, apart of course form the odd Hippo or elephant walking by!

The staff were brilliant, always welcoming, always informative and just really lovely people. Our guides were very knowledgeable and not just about the mammals, we were educated about birds, insect and trees as well!! Such a great learning experience for us both.

Our first of five Robin Pope lodges in Zambia and Malawi. A 30/40 minute drive from Mfuwe airport, the latter part - unsurprisingly - on rough terrain. We were welcomed to the lodge by Kim, the Host(ess). Our room looked directly out over the river which was very low at the end of the dry season.
A short trip via jeep and boat brought us into the National Park. Our guide, Dowdie, was excellent and gave us great viewing of Leopards, Elephants, wild dogs, lions and many other animals. He had a great sense of humour and was very informative.
Back at the lodge, Kim was always there to welcome us back, ensure we had all we need and enjoyed the excellent food prepared for us.
The camp is open to wildlife and we particularly enjoyed the hippo immediately outside one night. Security was not a concern though, with guards 24 hours a day who accompanied you to and from your room at night.
In retrospect, it would have been nice to have air flow conditioning rather than just a fan (as all the other lodges had) but that was a minor inconvenience.

After 2 years of waiting and wondering whether it will ever happen, I finally arrived at Mfuwe airport to be welcomed by Daudi and his crew and taken to Luangwa River Camp at the start of a 2-week trip to Robin Pope Safaris properties. A beautiful location, lovely accommodation and the warm hospitality provided by Daudi and Kim and their staff set the mark for the rest of the trip. On a bush walk the next morning, I was fortunate to have the benefit of Daudi's detailed knowledge of the area which I found quite different from my previous visits to southern Africa. When returning from walks or game drives, there was always a warm smile (and a cold drink) offered by Kim. And a top class food to follow.

My wonderful experience from Luangwa River Camp was repeated at Nsefu and Tena Tena Camps as well as during 3 days of Bush Walking. I cannot wait to come back. I have already booked again for 2023.

In September we had the wonderful experience of spending three nights at the Luangwa River Camp. Our room was lovely, as was the entire setting. The hostess, Kim Hubbard made us feel like part of the family. The river camp is optimally located for easy access into the South Luangwa park across the river and we saw leopards, wild dogs and so many other animals that our stay was very fulfilling. Evenings were spent with drinks around the campfire and then dinners worthy of a four star restaurant. We would stay there again!

Yet again Robin Pope excelled. Transfer from Tena Tena was by boat and the scenery is breathtaking. Very different to Tena Tena as it is a permanent camp. Kim the hostess is a lovely lady and Daudi a very good guide. He knows the area very well and ensures that you get to see as much as possible. Again magical encounters with Wild Dogs, hyena elephant and amazing birds. Not forgetting the nightly lullaby by Hippos.

Wonderful wildlife, both animals and birds, everywhere! Amazing National Park environment. Knowledgeable guides who were great at finding the wildlife, and explaining the ecology. Attentive and capable support staff. Couldn't be better! Thank you!

The camp is just stunning, great setting and lovely communal areas. Plenty of space between the chalets, which are in themselves very spacious and comfortable. The food is fabulous and the team look after you very well indeed.
The guiding is superb, even quieter drives are made interesting!

We spent 4 nights at Lunagwa River Camp. und we enjoyned the time on this absolutely brilliant place. Every morning during the early breakfast, elephant herds crossed the river bank and and at siesta time we got a visit from 3 bachelor elephant bulls. One time we were alone on the car and we were focussing on bird watching. We had a great day with Daudi our guide. Ignacio was a brilliant host and we would like to thank you to all other staffs in this camp. We had a memorable time.

Dear matthew k, Thank you for your question, I apologise for the delayed response. Our high season is from July to October which is best for seeing wildlife as it is our dry season so the bush and foliage dies back for easier viewing and the wildlife tend to gather round the few remaining water sources in the parks where we are located in Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi. The Vic Falls are in full flow around March/April but the best time to visit is around June/July as the water is slightly less ferocious meaning that all the river activities can be enjoyed and the view is better as there is less spray :) You can find our contact details on our website should you have any more questions. Very best Gabriella

There is a fabulous laundry service at Luangwa River Camp. Put your washing in the laundry-bag in the morning, it is returned ironed when you get back from your afternoon/evening game drive. So you need only two daytime safari outfits. Naturally, you'll need to wash your own smalls.
