After 12 years living in Zambia I finally made it to South Luangwa National Park. Would it live up to all the chatter I had head? Definitely, it did. Flatdogs was a name I had heard over the years as other folks I knew had headed for game viewing. It was the best decision ever... I can hardly give the team enough praise. Ade and Jess are great hosts attending to us in an understated way but keeping an eye on the ball to make sure everything ran smoothly - if it ever didn't during my 4 night stay, I certainly didn't notice. The team was friendly, polite and helpful - when you needed someone they were around. Well trained in what they did and proud of their camp. The food - wow, to have on tap so many choices at any time of the day was just amazing considering the logistics to the region. Their support to local producers for much of their requirements is great for the rural community and bringing in modest supplies where items are not available locally, really good neighbours to have!! Five star food, some of the best I have enjoyed in the whole of Zambia. If something went off the menu temporarily, an even better dish replaced it. I've undertaken trips to many of the key African safari destinations over 40+ years but I can't remember having had so many sightings of the Big 5 guys - leopards, lions, buffaloes, elephants (I see rhinos in Livingstone regularly anyway), plus add the elusive wild dogs/ painted dogs is a much better name when you get to see them up close. I had 6 game drives and 1 walking safari - every one had something special. Leopard in a tree chewing an impala, lions tracking impalas in the dusk, huge herd of buffalos causing a traffic holdup, migratory carmine bee eaters filling the sky, 50+ crocs feasting on a dead hippo in a lagoon - you name it we saw it. It started to get ridiculous really when on the last day there were lions mating in front of us - I mean really!! Obviously some luck involved but Flatdogs' guides got us to the right place at the right time every day. A brilliant break from a hectic intensive job, I felt I had a holiday despite getting up at 5am to get out into the bush. Even in their grounds there is a lot of interest - pukus, impalas, family of mongoose, monkeys galore with bald headed babies, giraffes and a family of elephants with baby strolling past my deluxe tent. Flatdogs gave me one of the best safari experiences that I've ever had and I will definitely chose them again if I'm heading that way. Thank you Jess and Ade and team.

This review is a little late! We stayed at Flat Dogs for three nights in May of 2021. Our trip was postponed from 2020 due to covid. Jess, Ade, Paolo and their staff were amazing!! Our guide Geoffrey was superior to most of the guides we had on our trip. We visited six national parks in Africa. The Ala Carte dining is an excellent option. We were able to chose from a wide menu any kind of food we felt like eating. We saw lots of elephants, lions, leopard, wild dogs, giraffes etc. We stayed at another more expensive place in South Luangwa after Flat Dogs. Flat Dogs is certainly far superior with their service and excellent staff.. We certainly plan on visiting them soon.

It is very nice to hear that our service and staff were superior to the more expensive lodges in the South Luangwa. Our aim has always been to provide an excellent experience at a reasonable price and this is why we have won "best value safari lodge in Africa" a couple of times in the last few years. We try to exceed expectations by concentrating on the important things. Quality, knowledgeable and ethical guides who use their skills to show you the wonders of the bush (rather than relying on radios to tell them where things are!). Great quality food, freshly prepared by our local chefs, with a varied choice to suit most (including gluten free, vegan, and other special dietary needs) Comfortable accommodation set in a natural environment (creating a safe place for wildlife to roam). And last but by no means least our incredible team who look after people so well. You picked up on all of those things which makes us very happy. Thanks very much for taking the time to write the review and it is good to know you still recall the visit to Flatdogs so fondly after all this time. We hope to see you again some day. Adrian

We came back to Flatdogs after 10 years and spent 2 wonderful nights there. It was and is one of our favourite places to visit and we had an amazing experience. We stayed in chalet 2b which was huge with its own kitchenette although we didn’t use it as there is an all day restaurant available with a long menu list and daily specials all freshly made, beautifully presented and delicious. The pool area is lovely with views over the river. Jess, Ade & Harold were fantastic hosts as were all the staff who were excellent and it felt like home away from home. Our guide was Yotam and he was brilliant as we saw lions, leopards, hippos, giraffes, zebras, elephants, buffaloes and wild dogs amongst others as well as a lion eating a kill and the interaction between him and the lionesses, being stuck in an elephant traffic jam, and watching hyenas firstly steal a leopards kill and secondly eat a buffalo that was stuck in the mud. The Luangwa is a stunning place to visit. Harold also kindly took us the Project Luangwa sponsored school (Flatdogs is a donor) and it was heartwarming to meet the boys that we sponsor and the coordinator Mable and to hear the effort and the drive behind the project to provide sustainability to the area. Flatdogs was a wonderful trip and we hope we can fulfil our vow to be back every year!

And how nice it was to see you again!!! Sorry you could only stay two nights but great that you squeezed us into your busy Zambian schedule. We have done quite a lot with camp since your last visit and we are pleased you liked the new pool area, the upgraded chalets and that your safari experience (most importantly) was so good! We were a bit jealous to be honest! The Luangwa is stunning, you are so right! And what a pleasure it is for us to have guests coming back to experience Zambia and the Luangwa after 2 years of it being so difficult. And now we have COVID testing at Flatdogs with results in 3 hours, it is so much easier! Harold is heavily involved with all our community projects so it was great for him to take you out and see the kids you so generously sponsor through school. And great for you to meet the team at Project Luangwa who make it all possible, with our support. Thanks for coming back and I am sure we will see you again soon. Thanks guys and hope the chili sauce got home safely! Ade

I was here on a brief one-night, pit stop stay. This camp is considered a solid, mid market option, although they certainly have different levels of accommodations so you can go up and down as your wallet allows. It is very comfortable, and the pool area is quite amazing and I said this even as a non-pool person. There are lots of bush bucks wandering around the property. The tents look out to the river. Hippo gruntings provide the lullaby.

Thanks a lot for taking the time to do a review. As you say, there are many different accommodation options for people to choose from which makes us a favourite place for many different types of traveller. Our a la carte restaurant with its extensive and changing menus also allows total flexibility of what and when to eat, which suits so many of the modern day safari goers. Sorry you didnt stay longer but hope that this little taster will be enough to get you back for longer next time. All the best and thanks again for the review Adrian

Just spent five days with Flatdogs Camp, for the second time after my first visit in 2017. Very happy to see that Jess, Adrian and Paolo were still around, entertaining, helpful and hospitable as always. The addition of the new pool area is perfect. It's so good that I skipped game drives so I could fully relax in camp, especially when we encountered 43 degrees heat. The camp is an awesome place to unwind and just chill. The restaurant has so much variety, you have to stay for a long time to finish the whole menu. You regularly see elephants, pukus, impalas, baboons, bushbucks roaming through camp, occasionally also buffalos and hippos. Great safety measures are in place that everyone can happily coexist. Jess and Adrian perfectly organised my Covid Test which can be taken in the camp. You get the result back and it just took 3 hours. So this is helpful, so that stop-overs in Lusaka just for the purpose of a Covid-Test are not needed. They print the test out for you, the QR code can be scanned with your mobile phone when applying for the GlobalHaven certificate (which nobody wanted to see at the airport anyway). The CoVID certificate was accepted in South Africa, so it's all reliable. The Game Drives were nice, the other travelers I was mixed with were a good fit. We actually had a lot of fun. Sightings wise, was a lucky week that the 21 wild dogs I have seen at Puku Ridge earlier moved on to the Mfuwe Lodge area and we could see them in two more game drives. Sightings of leopards and lions was less often than I experienced in 2017 (which was Aug/Sep), probably due to the heat. Still, we had some cool moments with leopards as well. It's good to see Zambia getting the international tourists back. CoVID safety measures are in place so everyone can feel comfortable. Till the next time!

Hi Timo, Thanks very much for the lovely review. It was great to have you back and we are pleased you liked the new pool area which we think has created a very nice space for people to relax in between safaris, or like yourself, instead of. The beauty of us leaving Flatdogs so natural is that we get so many animals who see this place as home. So to sped the odd morning enjoying a safari but not having to go anywhere is a great option. We have continued to develop our local chefs, who use as much local produce as possible and feel that our a la carte restaurant is adding more and more value to our guests when they stay here. Many of our return guests mention the food and the relaxed dining atmosphere as one of the reasons they return to Flatdogs for their safaris (along with our amazing guides of course!) Our wild dog population which was impressive has been bolstered this year with 11 packs denning in the south Luangwa area, and a recorded 94 pups being born. So sightings of the painted wolves are at an all time high, so we are pleased your saw them. And thanks for mentioning the new COVID testing we have available in camp with results in 3-4 hours, which has taken a lot of the stress and inconvenience out of having to have a test before heading back to your home countries! Great to see you again and hope you will make it back here one day. Thanks again for the review and all the best in your quarantine! Adrian
