The South Luangwa National Park marks the end of the Great Rift Valley, one of the last remaining unspoilt wilderness areas and possibly the finest wildlife sanctuary in Africa - a claim which is not an overstatement. It is through this 9050sq kilometer National Park that the great meandering Luangwa River runs, with its ox bow lagoons, tributaries, riverine supported woodlands and large plains, all of which play host to huge concentrations of game including elephant, buffalo, leopard, lion, giraffe, hippo and over 450 species of birds. Situated in the exclusive Nsefu Sector Tena Tena sits nestled under a magnificent and thick grove of mahogany trees. On a double tiered river bank each room enjoys its own private view onto a long stretch of the Luangwa River. Tena Tena is synonymous with Robin Pope Safaris as it was the first camp which Robin opened and ran and has become a favourite amongst many safari lovers over the years. Tena Tena when translated means “temporary home” and this is the feeling that we have tried to emulate throughout the camp but with a twist of luxury and comfort. The six tents are very private with plenty of space between them and each with its own window onto a magnificent stretch of the Luangwa River where the hippos wallow and the lions roam. The en-suite bathrooms are spacious and open to the elements, designed to copy nature with curved walls around the trees and simple subtle colours and a view from every facility. Each tent is specifically located to maximize privacy both in the rooms, bathrooms and on the verandahs with comfortable sitting areas and excellent views onto the river. The main area moulded around a large termite mound and mahogany tree with an old hippo run adapted into our path between the different levels is shaded by an enormous tent strung up between leadwood poles. With plenty of different seating areas there is space to relax and unwind whilst reflecting on the day's safari, before sitting down to a beautiful dinner on the banks of the Luangwa, under the stars and enjoying the sounds of the African night.

This was my second camp on my holiday & yet again did not disappoint All the staff lovely so friendly & want to please all the time. I am vegetarian & the food was varied & 5* . Accommodation great views over the river & you wake to the sounds of the hippo which I loved. Game viewing spectacular & very few other people there as well. Which made it even more special . Leopards galore so lucky & a den of hyena & her cubs we could just sit & watch play, or feed not phased by us at all. Go there you will enjoy.

Tena Tena Camp was our third stop in South Luangwa and we stayed there for 3 nights. The meals were good. Breakfast close to the river bank, Buffet at lunch and 3 main course at dinner We can highly recommended a full day game drive in this area. So it was possible to drive to the salt pans and hot springs area without rush. We did find the Nsefu Pride in this area. Thank you Bertram for these 4 great days.

We spent two days here and it was beautiful.
the rooms are gorgeous and we enjoyed watching the hippos from our room - counted 50 on our last day!

Bertram was fantastic! he took us on a drive and we watched a leopard in the typical " leopard in a tree" pose, then he timed the wild dogs puppies coming out of the den with their mother to perfection ! it was a definite highlight of our trip.

We also enjoyed a great walk with Bertram watching hyenas run and wild dogs chasing an impala! two warthogs ( my favs) hunkered down in the mud during the chase and we enjoyed them close up :)

We learned a lot from Bertram on this walk and would recommend .

The meals we had here were delicious. Would definitely recommend a stay here. They were very accommodating of our vegan dietary requirements

We had a fabulous stay at this camp. Accommodation is comfortable, food very good and the staff are warm and welcoming. This was our fourth trip to South Luangwa, which never disappoints, but we did have some of the most amazing experiences so far. This area is great for multiple leopard sightings, dogs and lions. On one day we were privileged to witness a day time attack by seven lionesses on a herd of buffalo. The buffalo defended bravely and recued a baby from the jaws of a lioness. We had to pinch ourselves. We have to give a mention to our guide, John. His knowledge and skill made all the difference to what we were able to see. Great hosting from Kate and Manager Bertram. We loved every minute, thank you.

My first trip to Zambia started at the incredible Tena Tena Camp. There are so many things I loved about this spot... the tranquility of being off the grid and fully immersed in nature, the professional and caring staff, tasty and creative cuisine, wildlife that is mind-blowing, perfectly appointed tents with a view of the river... It really is a paradise on earth!
Specifically, I recommend Chilumba. He was our guide throughout the 4 days we spent in this area--his knowledge of wildlife, plants and trees, was unparalleled. We saw amazing animal interactions that made us feel like we were literally in a Nat Geo film! I cannot wait to go back!

This was a return to Tena Tena as it has a place in my heart that I needed to go back to. It did not disappoint. The staff are amazing, the lovely Kate who is the hostess made sure we had everything we needed and more. Her bright smile at 530 in the morning stirring a pot of porridge as the wilds dogs ran across the sand in front of us is something to cherish. Bertram our guide was amaaaaazing. Eyes like a hawk. The game you see at this camp is almost immaterial, it is a real bush experience. However we saw, Leopard, elephant wild dogs and buffalo plus a few lions bottoms.

Just got back home after 2 weeks in Zambia/Zimbabwe. This included 3 nights at Tena Tena. What an absolute treat to stay here with Bertram as our guide. Everything about this camp was relaxing. We felt safe at all times but also remained close to the wildlife. The sound of Hippos chattering at dawn and dusk is a delight! Bertram is incredible! His knowledge and passion for the bush is outstanding, and meant that we left with amazing experiences seeing Wild Dogs, Baby Hyenas, Lions and Birds of Prey (and so much more!!). The staff are so attentive and friendly. We were so well fed, I felt bad telling staff I was full! And the sundown drinks and bush tea breaks were an absolute highlight. What a stunning place to stay. Remote enough to feel wild but with so much comfort and care! I couldn’t ask them to change anything (other than let me move in!?)

Another great camp - this was our first time at a Robin Pope camp. We loved our guide as well as the other guests, many who had been to this camp before. The food was excellent - tents are more on the simple side for safari, but we enjoy that. The bathrooms are outside, which can be unnerving in the middle of the night, but it was a great safari experience.

I'm writing this review and comparing Tena Tena directly with Sanctuary Retreats Puku Ridge and more broadly with many other safari experiences with 'Wilderness' and '&Beyond'. For me, this 3 night stay falls somewhere between an 'average' and 'very good' rating. The Camp itself is fairly small regarding facilities but offers comfortable accomodation in the form of newish tents with decent beds and 'gets the job done' outside toilet and shower. We arrived on opening day ; Bertie a Guide who has risen through the ranks to Camp Manager was welcoming and hospitable. Rose ( Assistant Manager ) was equally warm and brought much needed structure, focus and discipline to the operation ; she facilitated table conversations very well and was keen to ensure everyone was having a good experience. All the camp staff were friendly albeit somewhat hesitant in terms of delivering the service. Small ( but arguably necessary ) touches were missing e.g. a cup of tea/coffee alongside the 5.15am wake-up call. Food was good but not as varied nor of the same quality as other camps. Nyambe was our Guide and definitely up there in the top half of the league table of effective Guides. Despite there being very little Game about, he made every effort to bring the bush to life both on foot and in the vehicles. Regrettably and very disappointing was the fact that despite asking on 3 occasions to safari in the salt pans ( and being told by Bertie that he would 'make a plan' ) the said 'plan' did not become a reality. Apparently there were not enough vehicles to accommodate all the various transportation request ( which included taking travel industry consultants on site viewing trips ; May & June is the travel industry conference season ! ).
One other niggle which can be easily remedied ; transportation back to Mfuwe airport was a very transactional experience i.e. Be ready to depart in a closed 4-wheel-drive jeep alongside 5 others at 7.45am. We 'sped' along the Park tracks in an effort to get 'from a to b'. The effect was to somewhat shatter the tranquil/effortless/meandering experience of previously safari-ing the said tracks. Departing at 6am and incorporating a short safari would have been a far more satisfying concluding experience en-route to 'reality'...

We transferred to Tena Tena from Nkwali, which we had been very sad to leave. Tena Tena is
totally different however and we loved it. Truly hidden in the bush, and with only six tents, it blends beautifully into the landscape, and is of no threat to the animals, as proven by the abundance of wildlife in the camp itself. There were lion and leopard footprints almost daily in camp, and goodness are they noisy at night time. And that is apart from the hippos, elephant, impala, puku and warthogs who were also frequent visitors. We were late for breakfast one morning due to elephant on the track, and late back to the tent one night because of hippo. Very exciting place !

The tents were lovely and spacious, with screens to the outside that had to be kept closed at all times. The outdoor bathroom was very nice, with lovely views during the day. Less nice in the middle of the night though, and certainly not for the very faint hearted. However we have some lovely photos, all captioned 'view from the loo'!

The communal areas were beautifully laid out, and like at Nkwali, there was porridge on the fire, and toast cooked over charcoals. The food was very good, and we were exceptionally well looked after by all of the staff.

Bertram was our guide, and we loved him. There were four of us, so we always had a jeep to ourselves, and so were very spoilt and could go wherever we chose. We had some wonderful
viewings, including mating lions (we spent a very happy couple of hours one morning watching them, withdrawing at one stage to a safe distance to have our morning coffee, then returning to within a few feet of them. During the entire time we never saw another vehicle). We also did two walking safaris, and saw four of the big five (there are no rhinos in South Luangwa) whilst on foot.
We always felt very confident with Bertram, even though some of us were way beyond our comfort zone on a couple of occasions.

The policy is to eat evening meals all together, which were lively events as we all swapped stories and happenings. The differing terrain around Tena Tena meant that we never tired of our safari drives, and were very sad to leave at the end of our three days. We loved the whole ethos of the place - animals never to be disturbed or interfered with. Would we recommend it to other people - definitely.

Just a note on the bathrooms being open to the elements. I am frightened of spiders and bugs, so found the night time bathroom visits trying. However, it would never stop me going on safari to places like Tena Tena and Nkwali. It just reconfirms just how wild the bush is.

Are there electrical outlets in the rooms?
Answer from RobinPopeSafaris1
Lilongwe, Malawi1 contribution
Hello MLCanada, Thank you for your question, I apologise for the delayed response. Yes we do in deed have electrical outlets in the safari tents however as the camp is solar powered, there are some electrical items that cannot be used such as hair dryers which draw a lot of energy. You can find our email address on our website if you have any further questions :) Very best Gabriella
