The South Luangwa National Park marks the end of the Great Rift Valley, one of the last remaining unspoilt wilderness areas and possibly the finest wildlife sanctuary in Africa - a claim which is not an overstatement. It is through this 9050sq kilometer National Park that the great meandering Luangwa River runs, with its ox bow lagoons, tributaries, riverine supported woodlands and large plains, all of which play host to huge concentrations of game including elephant, buffalo, leopard, lion, giraffe, hippo and over 450 species of birds. Situated in the exclusive Nsefu Sector on a magnificent meander on the Luangwa River across which elephants often cross lies the historic camp Nsefu. Nsefu is one steeped in history and was built in 1951 and barring some upgrades the camp and rooms are still in the same place in the original style. The Nsefu sector was first pronounced a game reserve in 1966 some five years before the South Luangwa was even declared and has always been recognised as an outstanding game-viewing area. Robin Pope Safaris took over Nsefu in 1998, spent a year upgrading it and opened it the following July. The camp welcomes just twelve guests in six original brick and thatch rondavels with en-suite facilities, each room opening up to what can simply be described as the best view in the South Luangwa. The six original rondavels have been upgraded to include spacious en-suite bathrooms however we have tried very hard to keep the feel and fittings in the room in line with the original “old fashioned” feel. Nothing can sum it up better than a guest’s comment of “understated elegance”. Each room has a clear view of the river whether it be from the comfort of your bed or the chairs out on the verandah. From the dining room lunch can be enjoyed whilst watching large herds of elephants making their daily river crossing just upstream from camp. The bar and sitting area sit snugly between a large termite mound and lagoon, unobtrusive and cosy but making the most of the extensive wildlife that comes down to the lagoon to drink – lion and leopard can also be heard lapping away at the refreshing water in the evenings. What could be better than sitting in a comfy armchair enjoying a delicious slice of cake whilst watching anything from Antelope to Zebra coming down to drink. Nsefu Camp offers charm, history, exclusivity and comfort.

Our favourite place to be! We love Nsefu, it has an amazing location, history and Sebastian!

Catherine and the team looked after us from the moment we walked into the camp (after our bush camping), greeting us with much needed cold towels and a very cold drink.

Sebastian was our guide again. he is patient, loves guiding and has a wealth of knowledge and experience which he readily shares - we saw many great things and shared memorable sightings with him.

An away from it all place - as with all RPS camps there is no WiFi a big plus for us!!!!

A trip across the Luangwa river on our way from river camp and a jeep safari brought us to another Robin Pope lodge. The lodge and rooms were located by a waterhole with its own hide and by the river. The rooms were good with outside shower rooms and inevitable mosquito nets.
The beds had the benefit of airflow air conditioning providing welcome relief at night from the sweltering temperatures. We were moved efficiently when one of the rooms air con was not working. Electricity supply was somewhat erratic despite onsite solar panels. The reception area was open with comfortable sofas and chairs and a magnificent view of the river and waterhole. and, of course, a bar.
Meals were served outside at a large communal table which was very sociable. Breakfast was a mix of cereals, eggs, toast or porridge; lunch was quiches or tarts and dinner was a choice of mains etc.
As the previous camp, the food was of a high standard and the service was excellent. There were various visitors through the camp at different times with wild dogs passing by and, whilst at dinner, a member of the local pride!!! The regular arrival of elephants at the waterhole provided great entertainment and some superb photo opportunities from the hide at very close quarters.
The game viewing away from the lodge was excellent and we were fortunate to see leopard, wild dogs, a pride of lions and elephant enlarge numbers. The morning drives were better partially because it was cooler but also we weren't obviously restricted by the night quickly closing in.

Dear Paul Thank you for yet another lovely review about your trip, this time at Nsefu! We appreciate your detailed account of the camp and we're also relieved that the air con issue in your first room did not cause too much inconvenience. We also apologize for the erratic power supply and have flagged that with the team on the ground again. Your wildlife sightings sound very exciting, i'm glad you got to see so much and got some good photo ops! I do hope we see you again in our little corner of Africa. Until then take care Steph & the RPS Team

Nsefu camp was delightful it was like stepping back in time but with all modern facilities
Willie our guide was exceptional, the staff at the camp were all amazing catering for my gluten free diet extremely well. Saw numerous leopards both night and day and had good visits to the local wild dog pack, all in all a wonderful visit. Thank you very much, I’m sure we will be back very soon.

Nsefu was the second stop in our trip to Zambia, planned before Covid and arranged by Tracey from African Travel resource. She listened to us and made sure the trip was what we wanted and she didn’t disappoint. Nsefu was our second camp in South Luangwa and was our touch of luxury in the trip. Very comfortable accommodation and great guiding. The whole ambience of the camp was relaxing with views over the river. Amazing food and great conversations round the Boma. Nine leopard sightings in three days was an amazing experience with one exciting encounter when a leopard was tracking along a gulley to approach some animals, no hunt but a real memory. This with the rest of the many animals was totally memorable. Thank you for the whole experience.

Nice safari drive from the River Camp..
Different rooms- 6 rondavels, a little smaller, with good river views.
Very flexible in organising game drives.
We are happy to see what we see, but we did see leopards on two different days; and a wild dog pack resting, as we munched our picnic lunch.
Well done Sebastian.
Camp was closing , after us, for the rainy season….the kitchen ran out of one or two items…
And on the way to Mfuwe airport, 2 lions ripping apart their overnight buffalo kill,
as the vultures waited their turn . As we did…….

Met by Chilumba we had a great drive on the way to Nsefu. He showed us the wild dogs which was amazing! we only stayed one night but the rooms were lovely and the food ( we are all vegan) was delicious! compliments to the chef!

The next morning while having breakfast Chilumba pointed out that what we thought were four grassy mounds were lionesses:)

He advised us to move into the jeep and see what was going on. it was a fabulous experience, he was very patient and we spent a while watching them which ill never forget.

the views from the rooms was amazing and we didn't really have enough time there to truly appreciate it so id love to go back.

We were warmly welcomed at Nsefu Camp on our way to the walking safari trip. Lovely site with an exhilarating view over the river. Very nice houses with a superbly cooled bed. During dinner just after sunset we saw 7 lionesses coming out of the river walking into the fields. Sure to come again!

We spent 3 days at Nsefu and loved the view as well as the attentive guides
The food and accom was very average for the price and we had stayed at another lodge in South Luangwa before going there and found the animals were far more in abundance than at Nsefu camp.
It was a nice stay but if I can afford to go again I would stay in the main park not the Nsefu sector as the accomodation and gameviewing was far superior.
Infact I would highly reccomend both Luangwa River Lodge and Puku ridge as these camps were just as small yet luxurious, with better game and especialy food.
All in all Zambia is a must!

Nsefu is a very special place, which is why we've returned to it in 2012. In some ways it's a shame it doesn't get more reviews, but both times we've been privileged to have the place to ourselves, so maybe that's not such a bad thing after all from our point of view.

Nsefu during the wet is the most northerly camp open in the S Luangwa. The camp is set on a beautiful bend in the river, with old-style thatched rondavels. The rooms are quite small, but they are nicely furnished and there is space to sit on your verandah outside, or there is a nice comfy area by the bar. This camp is powered by generator, so there isn't power all day long, which adds to the sense of wilderness and tranquility.

Game 'drives' are taken in the wet season by boat - if you are lucky and the river level is high enough, you can boat through the amazing ebony groves where the trees are surrounded by water - a magical sight (I'd suggest you go earlier in the wet season than end March/April when for the 2nd time the water was dropping quickly and the groves were a bit off limits). Easy sightings of enormous crocodiles, ellies from the boat, and on foot (very close) zebra, ellies, warthogs, impala and lots of great birds.

The walking here is lovely - quite easy (if you are not a great walker don't worry - it's not difficult nor a route march) and you will enjoy seeing the wildlife on its own level rather than looking down on it from a truck. Thanks to Daudi who guided us with Christopher our ranger (again) and Thomas (and the rest of the largely unsee team!) for making this another very special trip.

No problem at all! We have a back up generator plus an invertor if all else fails so you needn't worry about electricity during your stay. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns. Regards Steph
