I found the Shawa Luangwa Camp to be beautifully laid out. The main area has a great atmosphere to it, and while relaxing on one of the comfy couches, it's easy to spot a family of elephants crossing the river or watching hippos sunbathe along the banks. From the pool area, you have an even better view and a great sense of spaciousness, looking over the far-stretched landscapes around you.

Moreover, the tents at Shawa Camp have flaps that allow for a unique sleeping experience. I'd definitely advice to keep them open during the night, so that the first thing you see upon waking up is a pink sky, with the sun rising above the river, and the wildlife along the river slowly coming to life. It's by far the most magical way ever to start your day! In the night, you look out on a night sky filled with stars and an absolutely stunning milky way! During one of the nights we stayed there, we could even hear an elephant walking around our tent, which was amazing to witness!

Even though you're completely remote, the food that is served is of great quality. Local products, great portioning, and delicious combinations of ingredients. This is served by the extremely kind staff that are easy to chat to and genuinely seem to enjoy their jobs. Because of them, you feel right at ease and there's a very friendly vibe.

The guides, especially the legendary Jacob Shawa, are incredibly knowledgeable. I definitely recommend doing a walking safari with Jacob! It's a totally different experience from being in a vehicle and Jacob will zoom in on the landscape and share with you thrilling stories about the different trees and smaller species of animals. What's so great about the guides at Shawa Camp is that they make you feel completely safe, even when you're eye-to-eye with a huge elephant, which is not unlikely in South Luangwa.

You will miss out greatly when not staying at this insanely beautiful location if you're around South Luangwa!!

So lovely to see that you enjoyed our little piece of paradise as much as we do. The tents have spectacular views and you can always enjoy the unique sleeping experience, with not only stars and the milky way watching over you but also elephants or munching hippos. We are very proud of our friendly team here who provide you with genuine and happy hospitality. It is with great pleasure that we hear you were thrilled by our Jacob's incredible guiding knowledge. He is so thankful to hear positive reviews from guests since Shawa is a real passion project for him (and even named after him: Jacob Shawa!). We hope to have you back sometime soon, The Shawa Team

What a fabulous safari camp! Gorgeous location overlooking the river (which was filled with animals!), the tents are uniquely designed with a sunken bathtub built in to the decking and an outdoor shower which was really enjoyable. The beds are so comfortable and you can sleep with the outer sides of the tent open so you can see and hear your surroundings through the night (the tent is still enclosed so you are not completely out in the open!).

All the vehicles are electric so you get SO CLOSE to the wildlife, it really was amazing. We saw lots of herds of elephants, mating lions, giraffe, buffalo, zebra and loads more!

I highly recommend a walking safari, our guide Jacob was so knowledgeable and we felt completely safe the whole time. We saw a huge buffalo herd, hippo, elephants, baboons, giraffe and lots of the smaller species and plants that would normally be missed on a game drive. Jacob knew everything about everything! He was very impressive and a really lovely, funny guy.

The whole team were superb, the food was delicious and the area is brimming with wildlife. If you are thinking of a safari in Zambia, Shawa Luangwa is a MUST!

The camp is located just outside the national park across the Luangwa River. Access was through park main entrance and boat cross to the camp. Nature has been minimally disturbed and vegetation engulfs the camp which is only viable when you get really close. The experience gets you as close to nature as you can safely get. The tents are almost not there with only netting keep them wild out giving excellent panoramic views of the river. The staff are wonderful from the manager to the chef, guide, spotters, chef servers and all admin staff. No request was brushed aside. The sighting were only enhanced by the expertise of the guide and spotter at Night with leopard spotting that appeared impossible to explain. Every meal was a pleasant surprise to the senses with exquisite presentation and taste. Outside showers, infloor bathtub and solar power used for everything including charging the electric landcruiser made this a surreal excursion

We stayed for 4 nights at Shawa Camp over New Year and it was the most wonderful bush experience we could have ever asked for. Everything about the camp is designed to provide maximum comfort for guests. I can't speak highly enough about the staff who are friendly, attentive, and very efficient with their work under the guidance of their excellent manager Mr Killian. We had such a wonderful time that we were singing and dancing with everyone on NY Eve! The food was amazing, with the chef providing any personal touches we requested. We travelled with our 18 month old son (their youngest guest so far!) and the chef/staff made it a point to cater for any special needs for him including making separate meals and giving snacks for me to give him on game drives. The rooms are somewhat different to what you normally find but in a wonderful way that makes you appreciate your surroundings- outdoor showers, sleeping with the tent flaps open.

But the most amazing part of this place are the game drives and discussions with Mr Jacob Shawa. We saw a variety of animals including lions, leopards, elephants and wild dogs. Mr Shawa is an expert in virtually everything about the Luangwa Valley, and always takes the time to explain the nuances of any animal, flower, bird, cloud, star or even speck of dust on the land! It is a unique experience to see Luangwa through Jacob's eyes and I can't recommend staying at his camp highly enough. As Zambian residents, we are proud to have such a national treasure giving a platform for Zambia on the global stage and hope many others stay here.

Thanks for such a wonderful experience, it was so memorable that I think our young son will be dreaming about it for a long time to come.

What a wonderful experience you had: to spend time in the heart of Luangwa as the year turned. We are so grateful for the chance to host your family, and for you taking the time to leave this heartfelt review for us. Our team is especially passionate about creating experiences tailored to each guest, so there is no such thing as a cookie-cutter Shawa experience. This means that they are constantly surprising not only our guests but also themselves with new ideas, memories, and experiences. We hope to have you back again some day soon so that we can blow you away with a whole new Shawa experience, with all of the magic of before and brand new layers besides. Team Shawa

We were the first guests of 2023 season. This property is stunning. Im struggling for the right words, simply absolutely wonderful. Due to high water levels we had to cross the river by boat and the pool was full of river water due to unprecedented flood. But it did not spoil our holidays. Our family was greeted by all staff members, given wet towels to wipe all day sweat and then we moved to our family tents. Both tents are connected by wooden planks. The tents are open during the day and they close the flaps for the night. There is no need to be afraid of monkeys which is totally different to other hotels and camps. The monkeys here are shy, nobody feeds them and your belongings are safe. Of course you cannot leave any food as this would attract them. The bed was comfortable, warm with direct view of the river. Outdoor rainshower, intent bathtub and small terrace for a break between safaris. This was our home for 4 nights and the kids as well as adults loved it. Safari starts every morning around 0530 -1000, then bruch and safari again 1545-1900. Plenty of animals all around the camp. The staff is a pride of Shawa. We had a lovely guide Preston and spotter Peter, the meals were prepared with love by Roy and served by Simon. Sula from guest relations was and Im sure is a sunshine every day and the always ready to help manager Obert is nonstop around as well. We would like to thank everyone in the lodge for a lovely stay and as kids said " we have to come to Zambia again". This was awesome experience.

I stayed at Shawa Camp in June and had a nice visit with some decent game drives. However, they overcharged me by over $1500 USD, which I reported to them a few days later as soon as I noticed it land on my credit card bill. Despite reassurances that this would be fixed immediately, I have now been waiting 2 MONTHS for them to refund my money. Killian (the camp manager) and Vincent (the MD) have now stopped responding to my messages, and I’m no longer sure I’ll even see that money again.

I don’t know if it’s incompetence or just general apathy towards their guests, but I’m shocked about this lack of professionalism, especially from a company who claims to prioritize customer service. I’m disappointed because I really wanted to love Shawa Camp (and Green Safaris) because of their focus on sustainability and environmentally-friendly practices. I hope this review encourages them to actually correct my longstanding issue. Regardless, they’ve lost a repeat customer, and I would not recommend Green Safaris to anyone until they rethink the way they treat their guests.

Dear Kevin, We are so sorry to read about your disappointment with Shawa Camp based on the mishandling of your payment caused by a mistake from the bank. We fully appreciate how frustrating this process must have been. We do hope that you know that we have been doing everything that we can to speed up the reimbursement by your credit card company, and we are very happy to confirm that, as we have been informed now, the payment was finalised last week. Be assured that we have taken the necessary measures to avoid similar issues in the future, and we apologise sincerely for the inconvenience to you. We hope that this hasn't blurred your experience of Shawa itself, and are happy to hear that you were excited by our strong passion for sustainability. We also work hard to empower our vulnerable African communities, so we do hope to see you back at Shawa or another Green Safaris property so that our local Green Teams can show you why we are worth believing in and supporting! Thank you so much for your feedback and we hope to see you soon. All the best, Green Safaris

A group of us were lucky enough to visit Shawa Luangwa Camp on their opening weekend!

Before we even stepped foot into the main area we were warmly greeted by a team of very happy, welcoming faces - a brand new team working so well together in such early stages. Their hospitality and willingness to make your stay unforgettable did not go unnoticed.

The tents are up high in the tree tops each with their own private deck overlooking the most beautiful spot on the Luangwa River - watching the sunrise and sunset from this spot is spectacular. With the park on the otherwise, we also watched an elephant go down to the water for a drink, our very on "deck safari".

We were lucky enough to join Jacob and his bottomless knowledge of the Luangwa on a safari in the eVehicle (sooo silent) and on a short walking safari. There is something new around EVERY corner in this park!

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Shawa to anyone looking to explore the South Luangwa!

South Luangwa National Park has been famous for its high density of game for a long time now, however it will soon be famous for a second thing: Shawa Luangwa Camp.

Firstly because of its tipi tents. They are clean, spacious and offer both luxury and privacy with a high water pressure rain shower and its luxury bathtubs. What makes these tents extra special is that its flaps on all sides can be open and closed. Sleeping with the tent flaps open (yes there still is a mosquito net in place which can also be removed) allows a full integration with nature that normal safari tents do not offer. One can simply lie in bed and admire occasional elephants that walk by on their way to the river or see hippos on the river bank.

Secondly because of its staff. Jacob Shawa is a living legend in the safari industry and one of the best guides in Zambia. Having done both electric game drive vehicles as walking safaris with him, I can only confirm his stature
The rest of the staff is also very friendly and offers a high quality of service and good camp fire stories.

We are really excited to say that we're a few days away from visiting Shawa Camp for the third time since opening back in May 2021. My girlfriend Aleksandra and I fell in love with Africa long time ago, since then we have been to numerous countries and parks, always choosing different locations as we always wanted to get a sense of most of the incredible diversity of such a magnificent continent.

We do believe that we found the epitome of wilderness, beauty and service at Shawa Camp in South Luangwa National Park, so in this sense we no longer care that much if we don't travel to a new location as long as we can feel home, because this how we feel at Shawa. As I pointed out on another post, the staff is super kind and thoughtful 24/7, the food excellent and the tents extremely comfortable and gorgeous. However, we believe that the most important thing when on safari is a guide with extraordinary skills, and this is when legendary guide Jacob Shawa comes into play and the main reason why we are again visiting Shawa Camp. This time and after telling my dad about it, we have managed to take him with us. We cannot wait for him to experience all what Jacob has to offer in the bush.

I will be posting and letting you know about our adventures when we're back, real excitement is what we feel about visiting South Luangwa and Mr. Shawa during the peak of the dry season from 4th September on.

Thank you!!!

We have heard and read much about Shawa Luangwa Camp but nothing could prepare us for the warmth and professional hospitality of the team at the lodge. In fact, we believe that our wonderful visit was not so much defined by all the magnificent offerings of the South Luangwa National Park, but rather by the quality and intimate attention of the team at Shawa Luangwa Camp.

Thank you for going out of your way to assist me late in the evening to ensure that I could deal with challenges at my office, the very special celebration of my son’s birthday and the sumptuous sandwiches, etc. to sustain on us the journey by road back to Lusaka.

We will cherish this special visit to the South Luangwa National Park and look forward to spread the word wide of what is on offer by Green Safaris.
