Set beneath shady trees by the Manzi River, it may be the simplest of The Bushcamp Company's bushcamps, but Kuyenda embodies the authentic charm of old Africa with its cluster of traditional thatched grass huts and back-to-nature feel and Phil Berry, one of the Luangwa’s premier guides, at its helm. Camp can accommodate up to eight guests in four rustic thatched rondavels and offers guided walking safaris, plus day and night game drives (open from June to November).

Kuyenda Bushcamp is like a little slice of heaven on earth. For four days in September 2022 I had the privilege of being a guest here. Fannuel greeted our group with a smile and a wave every time we entered the camp and was there to send us off with a, “Have a great day!” every time we headed out for drive. His clear love of his job was reflected in his smile and daily interactions with all of us who were staying at the lodge. Fannuel even went above and beyond bringing me a hot cup of tea (prepared just like I like it) every morning to my door so I could drink it while getting ready for morning activities. In addition to Fannuel, Aaron worked tirelessly to serve up great meals and always have a cold drink in our hands. He didn’t miss a beat the entire 4 days we were there. The entirety of the staff was wonderful but hats off to Fannuel and Aaron for being impeccable. Kuyenda was described to me as ‘basic’ but that is not the word I would use. I would say it is perfect. All the amenities you could wish for without spoiling the natural environment or masking the beauty of the landscape. Every day we saw elephants, giraffes, baboons, and even a honey badger grazing just beyond the decks of our chalets. We enjoyed a siesta each day after lunch for a few hours but I was never able to nap as there was just too much to take in and watch to waste the time sleeping. Our drives and walking safaris beyond the camp were also beyond imaginable. Guided by Steve and Shadreck we saw an abundance of wildlife as well as learned a great deal about landscapes, stars, vegetations, geography and on and on. There was simple nothing our guides didn’t know or weren’t willing to find out for us. They communicated in a way that was informative, entertaining and with such devotion to their craft that it was impressive. This is a must visit for all.

In the South Luangwa National Park, this rustic but well supplied bush camp is the perfect combination of wilderness and comfort was wonderful. We stayed in one of the 8 round thatched roof chalets surrounding a wide open comfortable lodge and dining area. A very special part of each separate chalet was the total private but open to the stars bathroom. The high points begin with the best guide we've had on numerous trips to Africa. Fanuel was a walking encyclopedia of everything African from tectonic plates to edible tubers on the roots of plants with every bird and animal in between. Best of all he was truly excited with us about every discovery. We'd come back just for him! He led us on fascinating walking safaris to see the big and little of the bush. But the rest of the staff were extremely kind and helpful. Nothing was left to chance. We discovered everything but the rhinos wiped out by poachers. We had delicious meals catering to our special needs. This camp is part of the Bush Camp company which runs a few additional camps and a main Mfuwe Lodge with all the amenities of a world class hotel. We stayed there for a night and at Chindeni. Both were excellent , but Kuyenda was the best.

A wonderful bush camp experience. Warm and friendly staff willing to cater to your any requirement. Aaron, the senior catering manager gives you a fine dining experience bar none.
You may be in the wilderness, but the accommodation is luxurious.
The game viewing is spectacular and the special bush breakfast is just the cherry on the top.

We were in South Luangwa Park in Zambia for 7 nights and chose to stay exclusively at the camps run by The Bushcamp Company. Kuyenda was one of 3 camps we used.

All were excellent, but we give the “edge” to Kuyenda. (There’s a reason why they have a 96% “Excellent” rating.)

The description of the camp uses the term “basic.” We learned that this is not in reference to the quality of the facilities or the service, but rather a reference to how camps were back in the ‘60’s: simple and unadorned.

The chalets are circular thatched huts. They are beautifully furnished with comfortable king beds, high quality linens and towels and plenty of storage space. The one we stayed in (#1) was right on the edge of a large open field where water buffalo and zebra were grazing 100’ away.

The bathroom is surrounded by a fence, but open to the sky. There is a flush toilet and double sink. They don’t have running hot water but, with a 20-minute warning, the staff carries hot water to a holding tank. Absolutely no hardship here.

At night, each chalet is equipped with 7-8 solar lights. You can’t read with them, but they are more than adequate for navigating the preparations for going to bed.

The camp can only house 6 guests, so it’s an intimate experience. Phil Berry and Babette Alfieri have been running this camp for over 25 years and are charming hosts. Phil is one of Zambia’s most prominent naturalists and guides. There is a staff of 10 and service is impeccable.

Meals, as other reviewers have noted, are excellent and served under the stars. And the bar is always open!

The thing that made the experience special was our guide, Suzyo Zimba. He is normally a guide for just one of The Bushcamp Company’s camps, but we retained him as a private guide for the whole 7 days. And, if we learned anything from our safari experiences, it’s that the guide is the most important factor in making it great.

...is that once it gets in your blood, it doesn't get out (to borrow an oft used expression).

I could go on and on about how wonderful Phil, Babette, Zachs, Richard and the rest of the Kuyenda staff are, but then I'd simply be regurgitating what almost evey prior reviewer has written.

This is a camp of two halves. In the first you have Babette, the incomparable camp manager, who makes the most wonderful host, and the time spent in the camp as enjoyable as any game drive. The conversation, the hospitality, the food (arguably better than my mum's) and the warmth of the staff make it the little patch of paradise that it is.

In the second you have Phil, who needs no introduction. He makes the experience - be it game drive or walking safari - enjoyable yet immensely educating. The zeal and passion that he has for wildlife in general and Luangwa in particular is both infectious and humbling. And as far as night drives are concerned, Isaiah is, quite simply, the business.

This gem of a bushcamp can be summed up in a single word. Sublime.

We first visited Phil & Babette in 2001 and after that visit we rated Kuyenda as one of the best camps we had visited. In 2010, after a number of safari holidays, we decided to revisit our most favourite places in Zambia. Phil and Babette were at the top of our list. There is always a danger in revisiting a very special place because it may not come up to your previous memories. Phil and Babette were genuinely concerned that our visit would not fulfill our expectations but they need not have worried. From the moment we arrived until the moment we departed we had what can only be described as the best holiday that we have ever had. Their attention to detail, the warmth of their welcome and the quality of both the walking and driving safaris was outstanding. Besides seeing all the game you expect, Phil has an amazing ability to show you the unusual. We have taken up bird photography in the last few years and Phil when out of his way to find nearly one hundred species in a period of three days. Kuyenda is a traditional bush camp in an outstanding setting and we recommend it as a must visit safari camp.

Kuyenda is a traditional bush camp but with all the comforts you could need and want in the bush. The huts are well appointed, big and airy, with large comfy beds and outdoor bathroom (connected to the room and safely closed up). When you wake up in the morning, the first thing you see are the amazing colors of dawn. Jacob is a great host, catering to all your needs and Susio is an enthusiastic and very competent guide. It was a pleasure to be with both. Animals were plentiful and we spent lots of time with a group of lioness and their cubs of 3 different ages. A great camp and an amazing safari!

Our family just returned from our second safari to Zambia. This was our second stay at Kuyenda. It was so marvelous we couldn't wait to return. Phil and Babette are the consummate hosts. They are so knowledgeable about the history of the country and current events particularly concerning wildlife. Our game drives were always rewarding and exciting. You cannot expect better food in Africa. Babette sets a beautiful table!! Sundowners are one of a kind experiences. And, by the way, leopards are thriving in Zambia.

Visited Kuyenda followed by Bili recently. Kuyenda was so wonderful we would not hesitate in visiting again and again. This is such a special place. Service was excellent and the food was amazing. We would rate the guides, camp staff and managers all 10/10. We were never short of game sightings-so many leopards! The tent was rustic and comfortable. We had tent #1 which looks out to a vast plain and we were visited by giraffes, impalas, bushbucks and elephants. And we could see all these from our bed. We were kept awake one night by noises from lions and hyenas. Open air bathroom was such a novelty and there was plenty of water from the bucket shower for a proper shower (managed to apply conditioner to our hair as well). Most visitors do a combination of Bushcamp co. camps and I would strongly suggest Kuyenda be included.

Kuyenda was our first Safari adventure and we are spoiled for life. Phil and Babette are the most incredible hosts. From the moment we arrived we felt we belonged. Phil’s depth of knowledge and legendary experience could be intimidating, yet he has the most unassuming style and is very easy to relate with. Couple this with Babette’s charm and genuine warmth, and a very caring staff, and you cannot help but feel right at home and very connected to this beautiful place.
While the camp itself is described as “rustic” I’d refer to it as simple elegance. The attention to detail is exquisite. The artifacts, linens, book displays, food preparation/presentation, and beautiful table settings are impeccable and create a sense of authenticity. No detail is overlooked.
And our guide, Sandy, was stellar. In the first 24 hours we witnessed a pride of 7 lions feasting on a hippopotamus, a clan of hyenas, a leopard, a herd of elephants, countless giraffes, impala and zebra. During our early morning walks we learned about the ecosystem, and night drives included discussions about the stars and evening skies.
Simply put, Kuyenda is the very best! We spent 4 wonderful days here, and could have stayed for our entire 3 weeks. We feel very fortunate that our first exposure to this magical life was here at Kuyenda.
