We stayed at the Lion Camp 6 years ago and really enjoyed it but since then it has changed dramatically. One thing that hasnt changed is the length of time it will take you to get there, but it is well worth it as you are located further into the park and there are less vehicles around you which I feel means you get to see more.

The layout is similar to the one we knew but the rooms have been rebuilt and the central area has been opened up a lot more. Vicky decided to do away with the communal dining, each party has their own table, but if you wish to join with others then that isnt a problem. On our first night we were joined by our guide Mayem so that he could get an idea of what we would like to see over the next few days and he managed for us to see everything we wanted and more.

The food was delicious and always served freshly cooked, and quite large portions too the chefs here really do produce great quality food. You start at 6am with some tea/coffee and if you want there is some porridge or a muffin just to keep you going until you return about 9.30 when breakfast is served, we had a light lunch about 2, and then set out at 4 for the evening game drive coming back about 7.30 when we had a few drinks and then dinner about 8. However things are flexible if you wish to have an earlier evening meal then you can start your drive at 3pm.

The staff were magnificent and friendly, thanks to Oscar, Max & Daniel, but it is also the staff you do not see that make this such an enjoyable experience. Your rooms are cleaned in the morning by the time you get back at 9.30, your washing is taken and then by the time you return at 7.30pm your room has been turned down and your washing returned. Wayne and Vicky are great hosts and want you to have a magnificent time and they will talk to you each day to make sure that everything is ok.

Overall this was a wonderful 5 days and we would really recommend this place to anybody.

This was our fourth trip to the Luangwa valley. We always travel in a group of friends and family. The trip was initially planned for 2020 and had to be postponed several times and the whole itinerary changed due to the covid pandemic.
I must say that this is, all together, one of the best places I ever been after our 27th safari in Africa. It is not easy for a camp to manage a tight group of 12 people with different tastes and requirements. All the staff at Lion Camp starting with Vicky and Wayne, the camp managers, did it seamlessly and in a lovely fashion. From arrival to farewell everything worked perfectly. We spent 4 nights at the camp.
We arrived into Mfuwe airport at mid day (we were coming from Lower Zambezi) and as it takes almost 3 hrs to get to camp, a surprise bush lunch was awaiting half way to camp in an idillic corner on the banks of the Luangwa river, with Wayne and Oscar in command. That was wonderful, gourmet snacks, fresh fruits and drinks; even a portable toilet was provided, just in case, that was very welcomed by the ladies in the group.
The rooms are tastefully decorated, with a confortable sitting lounge full of beautiful coffee-table books and the view from the terrace is really lovely with game roaming in the plain and hippos snorting in the channel.
Food is exceptional (Vicky is a chef herself) well designed and beautifully presented. All of this could not happen without the concourse of Oscar and Dottie and the whole kitchen and bar staff. Furthermore, a disabled friend in the group had a chair fixed-up with poles to be carried by Wayne and other people from the staff. This was a great sign of human affection
Last but not least, the guides Innocent (we had been with him 3 times before) and Mukupa were outstanding. May is not the best time in the Luangwa for game sightings; however, they did everything possible, and succeeded, in finding whatever game is to be found in the valley. We hopefully are coming back in 2023, in a better season for wildlife sightings
At the end we felt like we were part of this wonderful family of Lion Camp.

We have been to Africa before and have spent time in different areas of Zimbabwe, Botswana, Zambia and South Africa, enjoying accommodations ranging From tented camps in the Okavango Delta to Posh hotels in Cape Town. Lion Camp was wonderful. The lodge is located about one and a half hours in from the main entrance of South Luangwa National Park, which results in visitors seeing more actual wildlife and fewer vehicles from other camps.

We received a great staff welcome upon our arrival with wet towels and hot chocolate, perfect to help with the tiredness of a long days travel. Wayne and Vicky, the managers of Lion Camp whom ended up making our stay one of our most memorable safari experiences, helped us settle in before cocktails and dinner.

Our accommodations consisted of a large canvas and thatch suite with a raised outdoor deck, and an en-suite bath with double sinks and a spacious hot and cold shower. A comfortable king size bed, quality linens, sitting area, and all the amenities one could ask for made us feel comfortable, relaxed and at home.

The gourmet style food throughout our stay was interesting, delicious and perfectly cooked. It was immediately clear to us that Vicky was very personally involved in the design, orchestration and presentation of Lion Camps exquisite culinary offerings.

Our guide, Mukupa, and young tracker Charlie, were knowledgeably and sensitive to our particular interests. They worked hard and succeeded in providing us with new "firsts" during our morning and evening game drives.

The entire staff at Lion Camp, from bartender to housekeeping, did an outstanding job. Dottie in reception aka Marsha (inside joke) even helped with our interafrica airline needs. I could write paragraph after paragraph about all the wonderful things Lion Camp has to offer. Great people, great food, great game drives, accommodations etc. etc. etc. Kudos to Wayne, Vicky and the entire staff for such an excellently run safari camp. My wife and I highly recommend Lion Camp and we look forward to returning in the near future.

We had big expectations about our visit to Lion Camp, but they were well exceeded.

We received a very nice welcome to the lodge and a briefing, followed by lunch with our Guide who ascertained our preferences and advised on a program for us. The dining area and bar are set in a large, timber and thatch area with comfortable seating and open views over the savanna. The suites are spacious and attractive, with lots of ventilation, and a nice elevated terrace. The managers, Wayne and Vicki are very sociable and provide a personal service, but in a relaxed and friendly way, with interest in your experiences

Our guide, Simon, was superb, both in finding interesting game and in getting the vehicle in the best location for photography. His bird spotting was amazing and his detailed knowledge remarkable. He also provided an insight into the way the trees and vegetation were utilized by game. Every day we had great experiences, with action between a leopard family, baboons, lions and hyenas, We have never experienced anything like this before, which was on a par with the best wildlife films, but we were there!

The food was very special, and varied. Vicki was in charge and introduced us to the menus and ascertained our wishes. Wayne was 'hands on', always busy and helpful. All the locally employed staff were eager to serve and efficient. They spoke excellent English, and were very friendly and helpful.

Overall, our visit to Lion Camp was a marvelous experience.

We spent the best 4 days in June 2021 at Lion Camp. This place is nothing short of amazing.

The staff are incredible. The are warm, welcoming and extremely professional!

The rooms are beautiful and sit right above the river which provides a lovely backdrop to animal sightings. Hippos, crocodiles were right below my balcony. Across the river I watched elephants, zebras and impalas walking through and eating.

The food is gourmet. Fresh, unique and beyond yummy! Including the snacks during safari. I couldn't have asked for more.

The twice daily safari's were beyond all of my expectations. Innocent our guide was fun, friendly and knowledgeable. He knew where to find animals, and spotted them at times it seemed unbelievable. He spotted things that were almost a mile away. Although I had my doubts, he was right every single time. We saw everything I wanted to see and more: lions (a female pride with cubs and two adult males), leopards, hippos, elephants, zebras, impalas, cape buffalo, baboons, monkeys, hippos (in and out of the water), giraffes, water buck, and so much more.

Sitting around the camp fire and listening to Wayne's camp stories was another highlight. We laughed a lot! He and Vicky are such a wonderful couple. Their love for Lion Camp is obvious and what they've created is fabulous -- a five star resort in the African bush.

I hated to leave and hope to be back some day!

p.s. the photos on the website are exactly what you get... it's as beautiful as it looks on the site!

Our motto of arriving as guests leaving as friends might sound like a cliche, but very important for each of us at Lion Camp. We have the privilege of living here, in this awesome creation, least we can do is share it with every person making the effort to travel this distance to experience the beauty of the South Luangwa National Park!!! We went to Lion Camp on the recommendation of a few friends. We were so pleased with our 3-day stay there. The lodge is about 1.5 hours into South Luangwa National Park, which makes the location more remote for game viewing. Unlike the lodges more toward the main gate, we saw fewer safari vehicles on our game drives and plenty of wild animals. The staff was wonderful, under the management of Wayne and Vicky. You could see that they all loved working together and enjoyed spending time with the guests. In the few days we were there, we felt so at home and so well looked after. On top of the fantastic rooms (with cool aircon systems) and beautiful common spaces, the food was top notch. Stay at Lion Camp if you want a unique and amazing safari experience.

We absolutely loved our time at Lion Camp!! What's not to love?!

Vicky and Wayne, the managers at the camp have created a beautiful experience there and were warm and welcoming throughout our stay. They make a great team along with Dottie and Oscar! The hospitality and kindness of all the staff is amazing.

All of the rooms have gorgeous views overlooking a branch of the Luangwa River where you can see wildlife in the water or the plain beyond. The rooms themselves are lovely, well-appointed and the beds are comfortable!

The meals are delicious! Vicki is accommodating to dietary needs if you let her know ahead of time. In our party there were 2 vegetarians and a vegan and our food was just as tasty as the rest! The food is locally sourced, and the meals are well planned by Vicki.

I haven't even talked about the safaris and the animals we saw on them. Our guide was Donald and we loved getting to know him. He was friendly and a wealth of information/knowledge about all we saw along the way.
On the evening safari, we were joined by Mumbi who helped Donald and held the spotlight after dark. He had a great eye even for small things at night like little chameleons in the trees.
Each safari had a stop midway at a scenic spot and a yummy snack.

We saw so many amazing animals. Lions, leopards, elephants, hippos, zebras, giraffes, hyenas, wild dogs, wart hogs, etc. etc. On our last night we actually saw a pride of lions take down 3 buffalo.
I would look at my husband and say, "Is this really my life right now??" It was like living in a Nat Geo documentary!

The guides cooperated with each other via the radio if their/our group had an amazing sighting. I appreciated the teamwork.

It was sad to say goodbye and leave. In a short time, we felt like part of the Lion Camp family! Lion Camp, the bush, and all of the wildlife have definitely captured a piece of my heart.

Thank you, Vicki, Wayne, and all of Lion Camp!

Bonnie and David

We had a truly unforgettable few days at Lion Camp. There really aren't enough words to describe how wonderful everything was. The camp itself is set in a beautiful, remote location but provides everything & more than you need. The rooms are beautiful overlooking the river and we could hear the hippos bathing at night. The beds are the comfiest we've ever slept in anywhere. The food was exceptional. The staff were all amazing. Everyone so friendly, always smiling & helpful. We all loved chatting around the fire sharing stories from the day with them in the evening.
Vicky & Wayne are wonderful hosts. Nothing is too much trouble and its lovely to see how much passion they have for the animals and the environment. Oscar was always on hand with a big smile if we needed anything.

It was one of the best family holidays we've had and definitely the best safari experience we've had. We have 3 teenagers and they all fell in love with the safari experience. They even managed the early starts every morning. Innocent was our guide and he was wonderful. He helped us overcame some fears as he gently educated us to getting used to seeing the animals so up close. We saw absolutely everything and more. We even saw wild dogs with their pups which is apparently very rare.
After only 3 days there we felt like part of the family and were very sad to leave. We would love to come back one day!

Lion Camp is one of the most unique lodges I've ever stayed in - It is a 5 star resort with the warmth of a family run B&B; with a perfect mix of luxurious, adventurous, and laid back atmosphere. Located deep in the South Luangwa National park, we were immersed in pristine wilderness without having to "rough it."

The tents are spacious and well equipped - it feels more like a villa than a "tent." The tents are well shaded by trees so it doesn't get too hot even in the middle of the day. They each have a beautiful deck overlooking the creek - where there's plenty of wildlife activity all day (and all night) long. We got daily visitors - elephants, monitor lizards, baboons and vervet monkeys to name a few.

The main area is beautifully designed with a nice plunge pool and a deck overlooking the creek. This is where we had all our meals - with distracting views of animal activity right next to us. The meals were delicious and healthy; and the service was excellent. They were also able to accommodate all our dietary restrictions - which was impressive given the remote location of the camp. The only feedback I have is to add some Zambian cuisine to the menu.

The game viewing in this area is spectacular - definitely the best I have seen anywhere to date. We saw plenty of animals - the big ones were pretty much a guarantee everyday - leopards, lions, elephants, buffaloes, hippos. But we also saw several rare species like the Pel's fishing owl. And it wasn't just about "seeing" the wildlife, but really experiencing the safari - following animal tracks, scanning the horizon, and listening to the sounds - all culminating in fantastic animal sightings.

I want to call out our guide Robert, who was extremely knowledgeable and showed us how he tracks animals observing tracks and listening to sounds. He made sure we were safe and at the same time got the thrill of watching potentially dangerous wildlife right next to us.

But what makes Lion Camp unique is their people. Hosts Vicky and Wayne were so friendly and truly made us feel at home. And the manager Dottie was extremely helpful and kept everything in order for us. They were there to welcome us back from our game drives with a big smile and warm refreshing towel. They came by to talk to us during breakfast, lunch and dinner asking us about our day and making sure we were taken care of. After the game drives all the guests sat around the fire recounting their amazing experiences - and created a really fun atmosphere. That kind of homely touch added a lot to our overall experience.

I I highly recommend Lion camp to anyone visiting Zambia. It was definitely the highlight of our trip to Zambia and we hope to return to this wonderful place someday.

This was our first safari experience and I couldn’t say enough positive things about it. Vicki and Wayne were the perfect hosts, and run this like a bed and breakfast. The staff was incredibly attentive, and Vicki even altered meals to accommodate my brother’s “meat and potatoes” taste buds.

The rooms are spacious and immaculate, and the beds the most comfortable I experience in my two weeks in South Africa. The pillows are fluffy, sheets smooth, and it was easy to get a good night’s rest, especially on the cooler nights, when they thoughtfully placed hot water bottles in our beds for us!

Meals were delicious! Talks around the fire pit were a nightly occasion with everyone sharing their stories and even photographs. Every day was a joy, and Robert, our guide, was exceptional. If you can, request him. His knowledge and sense of the bush gave us viewing opportunities others missed.

We are definitely planning to go back to this luxury camp again!

Lion Camp is a seasonal lodge operating from the end of May to the 31st of October. Our area floods during the rainy season and therefore not able to be operational beyond October.

Hi Jo, Thank you for your interest in Lion Camp. Unfortunately for you our property is a seasonal camp that operates between May and October. Also, we recommend at least 3 nights as it is a lot of traveling to get to us for only one night. Regards Vicky Nel

Hi, A rather late reply to your question concerning Lion Camp in South Luangwa! We travelled with Audley Travel. They did an excellent job for us.
Answer from Vicky N
South Luangwa National Park, Zambia
Hi Susan, Thank you for your question. South Luangwa is a fantastic place to go on safari and I would highly recommend you visit the area while in Zambia. Lion Camp is unable to take bookings for children under the age of 7, however, there are a few lodges in the South Luangwa that accept children of all ages including Kapani, Chichele Presidential Lodge, Flatdogs, Mfuwe Lodge and Robin's House. I hope you are able to book a safari with one of these excellent lodges. Best wishes, Sarah
