Chichele Presidential Lodge was originally built for Kenneth Kaunda, the former Zambian president, in the 1970s. This historic property was recently carefully restored to maintain the original colonial style. A majestic arched entrance leads you into a huge colonial-style lounge and outside the grand dining room, a long veranda stretches with views down the valley to the Luangwa River. The main area features a comfortable lounge, intimate fireplace and bar area. In keeping with the grand colonial style of the lodge, the suites are decorated in the same understated elegance of years gone by. In the ten Victorian-style rooms, the large French windows offer a light, airy feel to the suites and open onto private terraces overlooking the valley - the ideal vantage point to relax and enjoy the wildlife. Air-conditioning, plush furnishings, a four-poster bed, and a luxurious bathroom can make you forget you're in the bush. The lodge also features an interconnecting room - perfect for families.

This is one of 6 reviews that I have written about our trip to Zambia- Chichele is one of the most magnificent places we have ever visited. From the moment that you arrive, you know that you are part of something special. The personal greeting from Lindsay and the staff on arrival- your welcome drinks- your personal guide around the facility and the hosted walk to and from your own private rooms- make this a truly wonderful place. You have access to everything that you would want from the best of the 5 star hotels, and you get more! The staff are wonderful, the facilities are brilliant, the guides that take you on safari and protect you if you want to venture on foot into the bush are exceptional. We were incredibly fortunate to have Prince and Maurice as our companions along the various journeys we did- and the knowledge and care they both took of us was wonderful. Prince is a particularly gifted guide and on our walking safari educated us on all of the sights sounds and smells of Africa. Mr Godfrey our professional game warden kept us safe, and took us to sights of buffalo that we could have only dreamt of. We saw giraffe, kudu, rhino, leopard, lions, zebra, elephants, owls, bee eaters, porcupine all within 4 metres of either us being on foot or in our land cruiser. Food was prepared by a wonderful chef who treated us to gastronomic delights both in the restaurant but also when we had sunset picnics whilst out on safari- . For us this was the best of all worlds and one that we will be returning too as soon as we possibly can.

It would impossible to overstate how outstanding Chichele Lodge is an how well cared for we felt by the staff and guides. The facilities are beautiful, food and service were excellent, and the location is superior to any in the park. On all of our drives we encountered enormous numbers of wildlife (mid-Sept) and usually only a few other vehicles, generally from a Sanctuary Retreats lodge. On one night drive we went to a more lodge-dense area of the park and encountered vehicles from multiple lodges, many with loud guests and crowded jeeps. The Sanctuary guides, guests and vehicles were easy to identify in the mix due by the respect shown toward the animals, land, and fellow travelers.

Malemia and Killian manage the lodge team with such professionalism and personal care that I will think of them from now on as a model of and the bar for hospitality management. My six year old told family upon returning from Zambia that one of the parts of the trip he would most remember and miss was Killian!

We went to Chichele Lodge on 12th October. The location is stunning, the lodges well furnished, roomy and very well cared for. The staff here are wonderful, making us feel totally at home and well cared for. The food was very good with plenty of choice. The laundry service was excellent showing a pride in their work.
John, our driver guide, was a true star. He had such incredible knowledge and always found the best position for my husband to take photographs.. Eight leopards in one day, better than any of our many trips to Africa.
Our grateful thanks to the manager and his wonderful staff for a truly great experience.

The lodge is beautiful and the rooms are decorated in a classic colonial style and were very comfortable to stay in after 4 days of safari under canvas! The food was of a good standard and the waiters and house keepers were very friendly and helpful. Our main problem was with the management, unlike all the other lodges we stayed in, in Zambia they did not go out of their way to be helpful. All activities were included in the price of the stay at the lodge but we were told we could not do a bush walk (which they do offer) because they did not have enough guides. All the other lodges ensured they had enough guides so that each guest was able to do their chosen activity. They also some how managed to muddled up our flight transfer times, meaning we arrived late at the next lodge missing are activity which was included in our package there but were far from apologetic about the matter.

Although the lodge is lovely and is like stepping back in time I would not put it on my list of places to return to. I would rather spend more time at one of the more friendlier lodges which were better value for money in Zambia.

Chichele Presidential Lodge South Luangwa

The lodge looks out over South Luangwa National Park.

Staff will pick you up from Mfuwe Airport
From there it is approx. 2hrs.drive to the lodge
Unpack your camera as soon as you are in the lodge vehicle.

The drive from the Airport passes through several small villages and before you realise it you are in the Luangwa National Park. It is a game drive in itself and apart from Rhino you can encounter most of Zambia’s Big Game. On our drive from the airport we encountered a large male lion just ambling down the road in front of the vehicle. Our presence did not concern him. Elephant, buffalo, giraffe an even hippo were also encountered alongside the road.

On arrival at the lodge you are greeted by the friendly, professional management and staff. Whilst introductions are being made and the precautions of being in a wild game environment are explained, your baggage is taken to your room.

One of the precautions is that you are escorted to and from your room in the evening and morning by a watchman. As the Lodge is an open plan design you could encounter one of the animals you have come to see waiting to see you on the walk way leading to your bungalow.

The experienced team at the lodge are only too happy to share their knowledge about the animals, environment and history of the park. Out on the game drives the guides will do all they can to find the animals you wish to see and position the vehicle so as to give you the best photo opportunity of the animal, light, angle etc.

All meals where of the very highest standard with the Head Chef, Roy, there to modify or cater to your gastronomic desires , within reason considering location.

The accommodation was impeccable. Housekeeping was without fault.

One of Chichele’s specialities is the walking safari. Your guide will be accompanied by an armed parks officer, both of whom know the nature of the animals and the habitat in which they live.
Your guide not only tells you about the animals but also the vegetation some of which is used by locals for food and medicine remedies.

If you need to rest up after your travel or game drives you can sit on the veranda and look out over the vast plain before you. I was there in February , and my eyes were treated to the site of Cape buffalo, zebra, antelope of all types, giraffe, elephant and hippo … all roaming freely.
But also be mindful that large cats, lions and leopards are also roaming freely although you may not see them.

A stay at Chichele Presidential Lodge in South Luangwa is a most wonderful experience and one of the best ways to see the legendary wild life of the African Continent

I’ve been on a few safari’s in Zambia but none like the experience I had at Chichele. From the rooms, to the staff, to the animals, to the air – this place should definitely be on your list of places to visit. The staff were so so friendly and helpful and were there to guide you through everything – including escorting you to your room when it got dark out. The rooms were very pretty and had a sense of peace. They overlooked the park area where we spotted elephants and impala close by. Every night, the staff would leave a story/fable about one of the animals that you could see during the safaris. The safari is another experience. We were lucky to go there on the cusp of the rainy season and so were able to see a lot of animals. We counted 20 animals – excluding the different types of bird that were all over the place. We saw 2 leopards after their hunt and saw lions literally 10 feet away along with giraffes, zebra, water bucks, bush baby, porcupines and much muchhh more. Our guide – Ernest, was knowledgeable and very helpful too. The food at the lodge was good too. Yummilicious panna cotta. Is this enough to convince you to go there? If you’re looking to disconnect from the real world and reconnect with nature while being pampered, visit Chichele.

30yrs down I finally made it to South Luangwa National Park. Born in Zambia but relocating to Asia, I always dreamed of going to Luangwa. I went to tree tops in Kafue while in school but that was a lifetime ago. We booked at Chichele Presidential lodge because of its history of being built for Keneth Kaunda which guaranteed us a good lodge. We got an all inclusive deal with flights to mufuwe, park fees and the lodge for two nights. It was quite a good deal. All meals and soft drinks were free..They definitely keep you well fed. The rooms are amazing..with everything you do need... all toilettries (So dont carry your shampoo/conditioners and moisturiser unless you absolutely have too. Laundry is free and picked up in the morning and given by evening. As this is in a wild park you do have to remain in the lodge area at all times with an escort in the night who takes you to your room. Please dont try to be a hero and go out and about by yourself or you will be the dinner special for one of the big 5 if you try. When you go for the game drive, depending on the time of year you go it can be quite windy and chilly so take a shawl or jacket. If it rains the guides have rain coats so not an issue. You are provided with peaceful sleep insect repellent in the rooms. Spray before you leave on game drives. Try not to wear perfume or very scented creams as that attracts insects. The staff managed by Killian are well trained and very obliging, you will love them. The guides are very good at tracking the animals and putting your safety first. We managed to see 4 of the big five (the fifth being the rhino is pretty much extint in zambia now). The lodge has wifi but it is only in the main lounge area and the signal is not very strong, however the whole experience is to be away from it all so please be prepared to disconnect from the rest of the world. Trust me you wont want to return back to the city after this experience. The only downer was that the food could have been better to keep up with the rest of the luxurious feel of the lodge, it lacked balance of flavours. However they did do one of the best panna cotta's i have ever had.Definitely choose Chichele and let the team take care of you..You will not regret it.

My wife and I have just returned from spending a week at Chichele Lodge, and our experience has left an indelible impression of the friendliness and professionalism displayed by the hardworking team which gel together to strive to make any stay at this beautiful lodge a 'never to be forgotten' pleasant and very enjoyable experience. From the time that you are escorted to your room in the evening (there are no fences around the Lodge so the occasional 'visitor' has a tendency to drop by) to the time you get up in the early hours to start your game drive you are met by cheerful, enthusiastic staff. The food is excellent with a good selection throughout the day. In addition to the normal cereals, toast etc, a cooked breakfast can be supplied on request, and lunch, afternoon tea and evening meals are all freshly prepared to a high standard by Roy Kaputo and his very able team. The accommodation benefits from a/c which makes all the difference, especially during October when temperatures are relatively high. Game guides in South Luangwa have a reputation for being the best in Africa (the exams to qualify are very difficult) and Nicholas and John, our guides, certainly confirm this reputation. They were excellent. Killian took care of our every need backed up by Malenia, and Betty ensured that our accommodation was kept to an impeccable standard. We have travelled for 14 years throughout Africa. Chichele is one of the best experiences we have enjoyed during that time. Very highly recommended. The ability to partake in night-time game drives, not usually permitted within National Parks is an exciting plus and one adventure not to be missed. One the first morning we stayed at Chichele we were up early to prepare for our morning game drive. I looked out of the window as the sun appeared over the horizon. 20 yards from my veranda a bull elephant was feeding on a nearby tree. This is the excitement of staying in a wonderful venue like Chichele. Hopefully, we will be back in the future.

This lodge is an adventure, the guides are top notch. The chef and his staff made great food and better soups. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are all great. We were there for 4 nights with our closest 10 friends. We visited 4 lodges during our 3 weeks in Africa and this was number 2 from a list of great places. We were there during the dry season, it must be unbelievable when the grasses are in their prime. We never missed a game drive and even took part in a walking safari.
If only we had time to go back........

Spent 7 nights as a single traveller within a group of 8 others at the end of August and had a wonderful experience.Location excellent - on the top of a hill looking down on to the Luanga valley.Lovely big clean room facing the ever changing plains. All the staff were very friendly and welcoming and nothing was too much trouble for them - they made us all feel very special. The food was very good and the chefs catered well for my vegetarian diet - never went hungry. The game drives were excellent and both our guides - Ernest and Levi - gave us lots of information and found us wonderful wildlife. The wildlife was memorable - in particular the painted dogs and their puppies and an encounter between another pack of dogs and an elephant. Also the numerous leopard sightings. However all the animals put on a wonderful show for us.I will also remember the beautiful smell of the jasmine on returning to the lodge at the end of a night drive and it felt as if we were returning home. The whole time we spent there was full of surprises and a lovely touch was returning to our rooms after dinner to find an animal bedtime story waiting for us.I will treasure all the memories of the trip including all the staff and my fellow travellers for the rest of my life.

Can you tell me the best currency to bring with us to the Lodge and some advice about tipping guides and staff.
Lusaka, Zambia43 contributions5 helpful votes
US Dollars is the best currency to bring with you for tipping guides and the general staff. Tipping Is not expected but always enthusiastically received if you are happy with the service. Most camps will say as a guideline $10 per day person. Guides are tipped separately from the general stuff. I hope this is helpful.

Answer from Sanctuary R
London, United Kingdom10 contributions
Hello Joyce There is no formal dress code for the evenings. We suggest guests wear whatever they feel most comfortable in. Clothing should be cool and comfortable. Greens, browns and khaki coloured clothing are advisable for safaris especially when doing a walking safari. We suggest long sleeves and long trousers and for morning and evenings due to mosquitoes and a fleece jacket as it could be cold early mornings Hope this helps, Sanctuary Retreats
