A fabulous experience from start to finish. The accommodation was excellent, the food delicious and the staff delightful. Chikunto is well placed to access the best parts of the South Luangwa National Park and our guide James had both an extensive knowledge of the animals and of their behaviour which allowed him to position the Land Rover for the best view of the action. We were thrilled to watch both hunting dogs and a lion hunting. We had elephants and hippo in camp and a pack of hunting dogs slept beside the lodge one night. Rarely were there no animals visible as we ate lunch and / or dinner. We were there in the height of the dry season but with the river still flowing and lagoons still with water in them the wildlife all looked well fed and healthy. In the week we were there we saw 12 leopards! Would love to return.

Leopard Heaven – if you want a ‘sure thing’ stay at Chikunto Safari Lodge Seeing is believing! Three leopards later on my first game drive with Chikunto Safaris there was little doubt in my mind that South Luangwa is indeed The Valley of the Leopard. And Chikunto’s guides are expert at finding them. Talk about good 'spotting'! Finally, my dream had come true - I was in ‘leopard heaven' as our experienced guide & tracker located not one but three leopards during our afternoon/night drive - all within 40 minutes. At this point I need to add that the other game drive vehicle encountered four leopards during their late afternoon drive. The guides at Chikunto are not just tracking experts – with perfect vision to locate camouflaged animals and birds – they are also passionate conservationists. Years of experience is evident as they instinctively know the best time and place to see elephants crossing the Luangwa River, where to find lion, wild dogs, herds of buffalo, Thorneycroft giraffe or Carmine Bee-Eaters. Their encyclopaedic knowledge of the local fauna and flora is astounding As always it’s all about LOCATION! As one spends more time on game drives during the ‘magic hour’ (before / after sunrise and sunset) wildlife sightings were prolific - from honey badgers to porcupines, civets, servals. This and the chances of seeing leopards and lion when they are most active are exponentially improved with Chikunto Safari Lodge being located inside South Luangwa National Park. The Perfect Leopard Safari! The other highlight was the superb food, our luxury tent and our amazing star bed sleep out. Can’t recommend this little luxury lodge enough – superb tents, cuisine, super freindly and attentive staff, excellent standars all rund only has 5 tents.

Dear Tiffany, oh my god, I don't even know what to say. When I read your feedback I had goosebumps. I can't be happy enough for you that you had such a great time with so many great experiences at our camp. My feeling that we found a perfect location in the national park when we built the lodge five 5 years ago has been confirmed once again by your feedback. Thank you very much for that! I will immediately pass on your praise to my team and thank you again on behalf of whole Chikunto family. I can hardly wait to be there again at the end of November to close the lodge for the rainy season. I miss my African home away from home... All the best to you and maybe you'll come back again. Don't wait too long, you only live once! Kindest regards Jens

We'd heard that there were wild dogs in the area and obtained some excellent help and advice even though we were not residents. This included a short tour of the facilities which seemed very luxurious from a stunning pool to the small number of exclusive cabins. Definitely one for the bucket list as it was clear that you'll be well looked after

We purchased this safari lodge completely blind based on a choice largely driven by a travel deal during the height of Covid-19. But, Chikunto Lodge turned out to be an incredible experience; with exceptional safari guides, long and eventful safari drives twice daily, incredible dining experiences throughout the week and a staff that demonstrated kindness, care and knowledge. The lodge caters to a small number of guests which makes your experience even better. I have nothing negative to say about my stay and only wish I could plan another trip very soon.

My husband and I stayed here for 7 nights and I can guarantee you this place is a must visit if you are looking for a once-in-a-lifetime safari trip. Everything Chikunto offers is more and better than I could've imagined prior to the arrival. The support Gareth provided prior to the arrival was excellent. The location is perfect. A bit away from any other lodges so it has a very private feel to it. The chalet is spacious and comfortable. All of the modern amenities such as bright lights, a small safe, hot water, drinkable tap water, clean toilet, a hair dryer... were there. The bed is oh-so-comfortable. We had a great night sleep everyday. We saw many animals including impalas, zebras, elephants...etc from our own patio. Hippos were usual visitors around the lodge at night and we could hear them munching foods and laughing (that's what they sounded like :)) I miss hearing all the animal sounds at night. The noise didn't bother us at all while we were sleeping. I highly recommend spending a night or two at a stargazing suite, too. It's magical. Literally everyone at the lodge is very friendly, kind and helpful. The food was, as everyone says here, great! I was never hungry during our stay. The chef and his team are obviously very talented. We enjoyed the Zambian lunch one day and I'm glad we did. The safari experience was out of this world. We liked that we rarely saw other cars while we enjoyed the animal sightings. Our guide, Robert, was super knowledgeable. I swear he's like an animal translator, too! His observation skill and knowledge are so impressive. Each ride was a very educational one and we appreciated that. Thanks to him, we saw all the animals we hoped to see, including painted dogs, leopards and lions. Benjamin, our transportation driver and a nightly spotter, was amazing and very helpful, too! We also signed up for a village tour and a walking safari. I highly recommend both. Visiting the local was a very humbling experience and I'm glad we had an opportunity to visit the school and the people. I can keep going on and on how great Chikunto is. But one more thing I want to mention is that what I miss the most after the trip is the people I met at Chikunto. I visited here to see animals, but now I want to go back to see our friends at Chikunto again. Hope whoever reading this can make a trip to Chikunto. It'll be a very special trip of your lifetime. Thank you to everyone at Chikunto. We hope to be back someday..hopefully soon.

Dear Seiko, Thank you so much for your lovely feedback, and to hear of that support from Gareth prior to your arrival. I know that it was a long trek from Las Vegas, so am extra pleased to see that it was all worth it. We strive to maintain an authentic ‘bush’ experience at Chikunto, but do our very best to ensure that this is underpinned by the comfort and the amenities that you so ably describe – totally agree with you on the comfort of those beds by the way! It was lovely to read your comments about the sounds of the bush – an African safari really is an all-round sensory experience of sounds, scents as well as those amazing sightings. The team onsite have gone to a lot of effort to build the amazing elevated Stargazing and Sleep Out platform, and it is very rewarding to have the experience highlighted – it really can provide some extra-special memories for anyone that does have the opportunity to stay with us. I am so glad you enjoyed your safaris with Robert and Benjamin – I'm blessed to have such a knowledgeable and passionate guiding team at Chikunto. South Luangwa National Park is known as ‘The home of the Walking Safari’ and it is an experience that we encourage all of our guests to try at least once during their stay – it really does allow you to ‘connect’ with the bush. Chikunto remains fully committed to working with the local schools and the local community and I am pleased that you had the opportunity to see and experience some of the local Zambian culture. Thank's again for your kind words. We feel privileged to have had the opportunity to you stay with us at Chikunto, and your friends hope to be able to welcome you back soon. Kindest regards, Jens

Put Chikunto on your bucket list! Chikunto is located deeper in the park than most lodges so you will be completely immersed in the experience. The wildlife encounters are amazing and seemingly constant! There were no safari traffic jams. We saw the big 4 plus leopards 5 of 7 days, wild dogs, giant owl, monitor lizard, and an innumerable number of others. The STAFF!!!!! I genuinely miss these guys! Robert and Benjamin were amazing on our daily drives! It’s about 5-1 staff to guest ratio. You are treated like royalty without ever feeling crowded. I highly recommend spending at least one night on the Star Gazing deck. 6-Star

We spent 5 nights in Chikunto at the end of July. This trip had been saved for and planned for well over a year . Before we even set foot at the camp, Gareth was a delight to deal with via email with all my questions, tips & logistics etc. Gareth had me so positive and excited before I even arrived. I wont repeat all the similar comments in other reviews, only to say ‘Yes”, the food is awesome, the staff and service are excellent, wildlife fantastic, even right outside the camp. It’s great the camp is all seamlessly run by local staff. Fireside chats in the evening with other guests and Mwansa were lovely. Jen’s the owner was completely switched on to what guests like in a lodge based on his own previous travel experiences, which meant we had things like amazing hot water and pressure like a 5 star hotel in the suite tent ! Switches in the right places, charging stations for devices. Even a hair dryer in the suite……..which brings me to my funny anecdote, on one of the mornings I skipped the early drive as was very tired and sent my husband off on his own. Whilst blow-drying my hair I saw a small herd of impala running past in my bathroom mirror reflection, and they were running very fast past the camp… I raced out to my deck and then found about 5 or 6 painted dogs come chasing after them, and then another 5 and more again…amazing, and then came the hyena’s. We hadn’t seen the dogs up to that point. I felt a little guilty as I’d seen them with no effort. When my husband returned later that morning, it turned out he’d also seen them with James our guide and got to see the left overs from the kill and all the hyenas scavenging afterwards. The daily game drives were so lovely and we enjoyed James’ superb knowledge, enthusiastic approach to guiding and his overall attitude to life. He was great company and we were both very sad to say goodbye to him at the end of the trip. I was captivated by Chikunto, the whole backstory, the experience, the care for the community, Jens, Gareth, Mwansa, all the lovely staff, and James our perfect guide. It still brings slight tears to my eyes writing the review. Absolutely a class act. Thank you.

Dear Jacqueline, Thank you so much for your fabulous Review, and I am delighted that I got the opportunity to meet with yourself and your husband onsite. We are fortunate to have visitors from a range of different countries from all over the world like from Australia (in your case!) – it makes for an interesting and ‘rounded’ experience for our guests and staff alike. I'm happy that we made your ‘Chikunto experience’ an enjoyable one right form the start so it was great to see that Gareth was on hand to help with the ‘pre-arrival’ element of your experience. :-) Whilst we clearly focus on delivering on the physical ‘product’ side of things you rightly highlight the key elements that will really last: the stories, the connections with the staff, the bush and the animals and all those memories. You became part of the Chikunto Family, and I hope that it will not be too long before you are able to return. :-) Kindest regards Jens

My husband and I spent 1 week at Chikunto and it was more than we could have hoped for. The accommodations were fabulous and comfortable from the net covered beds to the deck only feet away from hippos, zebras and antelopes. The weather on winter was great. And perfect for our twice daily game drives. We saw the big 4 as well as animals and plants and birds we never knew about. The staff are so personable as well. We visited a school and met people in the community and it all left such a great impression on us. Finally let me say the food here is so delicious from the bush brunch to the sundowners and everything in between. When we left to go home I almost wanted to cry Because I felt so welcomed the whole time we were there. We cannot wait to go back with family and friends in the future.
