This new tented camp features 5 beautifully decorated tents, each with its own star bed platform directly connected to the tent. Sleep in or out, it is your choice! Daily activities include bush walks and game drives. This camp belongs to Kafunta River Lodge and most of our visitors add their reviews under Kafunta's page rather than for each camp separately.

From the moment you enter the 3 Rivers Camp the beauty and hospitality are apparent. Elephants, hippos, baboons giraffe and antelope wander in and out of the camp to visit the waterhole or pass by to the river and bush beyond. There is no wifi and little, if any, telephone service so you really feel away from it all.

The tents are really nice with screened windows from floor to ceiling for viewing the animals as they pass by. The bath is semi-outdoors with privacy walls, but fully open to the outdoors, with a choice of indoor or outdoor showers. The pièce de résistance is the Star Bed set about 15 feet in the air allowing game viewing during the day and a magnificent view of the stars at night. During the day there is a shaded cover and at night the bed is made and covered with a mosquito net allowing full view of the Milky Way and the stars.

TJ and his crew cannot do enough to insure that you have an enjoyable stay. Game drives are complimented by walking safaris at least twice each day. With good food, excellent guides and all the natural beauty of the Luangwa River and surrounding bush, there's no better place to enjoy Zambia.

This was our first visit to Three Rivers Camp, a sister camp of Kafunta River Lodge. We had no doubt the experience would be a wonderful one. We were very excited about the remoteness of the location and the opportunities to walk.

The room was lovely and had everything we needed. They also have elevated platforms where you can lounge during the day or sleep out at night, another plus.

The staff was warm, welcoming, and available for any request. Breakfast was served around the campfire as the sun rose above the river, simply magical.

The dining area for lunch and dinner was also open and faced the river. The cuisine was excellent, with lots of fabulous choices. The only danger in camp, was the weight you could gain if you did not use self control. :)

We were able to take three short walks and one long walk during our three night stay. Each was amazing. Our exceptional guide, Ernest, was an encyclopedia of information, whether it was plants, animals, scat, or rocks, Ernest was able to info and delight with detailed information. If you have never walked on a safari before, my husband and I highly recommend this activity. It truly offers a new perspective.

Our time here was most memorable, and our only wish was that we had stayed a few more days.

Dear Rebecca, Thank you once again for taking the time to post this review (in addition to your review of Kafunta River Lodge), it is very much appreciated, and of course, thank you for the kind feedback. Three Rivers Camp is truly a magical spot, an immersion in the wilderness and total disconnection - something we very much need. And you are right, walking in the bush is an experience not to be missed: slowing down and looking at all the little marvels nature is offering us. We're so glad you enjoyed your first visit to Three Rivers, and we hope it won't be the last. Thank you again for choosing to stay with us, and for your support towards the Luangwa Valley. Sincerely, Izzy

This was the second stop on our tour of the three Kafunta properties (all wonderful) and may just be our favorite! The remote location within the park makes for a great game drive experience with few vehicles. The chalets are well appointed with large open air bathrooms and the highlight is the “star bed,” lofted sleeping porches that are cool and comfortable and provide a spectacular view of the night sky. The food is excellent and the communal dining was a nice change from the prior places we stayed – and lots to talk about when three lions crossed camp during dinner time! TJ, the camp manager, is a wonderful host and he has an excellent team who made us feel welcome and well taken care of. Our guide, David, was the best! He is so incredibly knowledgeable and we learned so much on both our walking and driving safaris, which delivered in terms of animal sightings. A big highlight was our 10K walking transfer with David to the next camp, Island Bush Camp. The terrain was not too difficult and it was such a special experience (even with all the tsetse flies!)

Dear "rwendin"! Thank you so much for taking the time to review not one but all of our three properties in South Luangwa! I'm so happy to read that you loved Three Rivers Camp for its set-up (and star bed!), but most especially its staff. I will definitely share your feedback with them all. Thank you for pointing out David, and the quality game viewing you had while at the camp. Lions through the camp at dinner, seriously? The walk between Three Rivers Camp and Island Bush Camp is definitely a must do for our guests wishing to explore the bush on foot. I'm glad you tried it despite the naughty flies. I hope you will revisit us in the future. Most sincerely,

This was our second stop of our first safari. We stayed two nights here after staying at Island Bush camp with the Kafunta properties. We were able to enjoy the star bed on our first night and could hear the hippos munching away around us. I still managed to sleep very well on the comfortable bed, despite how exciting it was. We were able to enjoy the wildlife (elephants, baboons, warthogs, and more) walking into the camp area to partake of the watering hole; we even saw a little hippo on our escorted walk back to our tent in the evening. Nevertheless, we always felt safe here. On our drive into camp, we saw a recently born impala running into its mother's backside. We saw a Pel's fishing owl on our first evening game drive. On our second night, we had a torrential downpour during our game drive, which was quite the experience and our first real rain leading up to the rainy season. We had Andrew and Paul as our guides on game drives and a walking safari; all of which we enjoyed. As at Island Bush, we really appreciated the information on the walking safaris and tried to record some of the fun facts afterwards. We really appreciated how Andrew tailored what he discussed to our interests. Meals, served by Francis and John, were always delicious, and we enjoyed chatting with TJ over lunch and dinner. Everyone was always a wealth of information. Once again, this was luxury in the bush, even more so as Three Rivers had running water and a fan over the bed.

Dear Amanda, Thank you very much for adding your review of Three Rivers Camp, in addition to those for our other properties. You had quite the itinerary! We're delighted to read that you enjoyed your star bed night, and glad you did it the first night as rain would have prevented the experience on the second night! Well done! It's a very special feeling to sleeping out in the open even if the tent is not very far! Thank you for the keen comments on our staff, this review will be shared with them. We hope you will have a chance to return in the future. Most sincerely, Izzy

After spending a wonderful three days at Kafunta Lodge, our guide Paul whisked us off to the stunning Three Rivers Camp. We were greeted by a family of giraffe and the ever smiling TJ. The camp is beautiful and off grid allowing us to fully enjoy the peace and tranquility. The game drive experience is very different to Kafunta Lodge with no sightings of big cats but this gave us the time to get up close to and enjoy observing the other animals, especially the elephants who behave completely differently due to the limited number of vehicles they see. Even the babies have attitudes with their ears flapping and trumpeting. We enjoyed two walking safaris where we were lucky to come across a large family of giraffe including a very young baby. To stand so close and watch them watching you was a real privilege. Sleeping under the moon and stars every night listening to noises of the bush is something we will remember for many years to come. TJ and his team are wonderful ensuring you are safe and enjoying ever moment you are with them. Meal times with the other camp mates were also a highlight with excellent food and wine and many topics of conversation being covered!

I'm happy to read that you've enjoyed the difference in style and natural surroundings between our main lodge and this remote camp, it is so much wilder down in that area. Thank you for all the compliments which are forwarded to the staff. We hope you will visit again in the future. Most sincerely, Izzy

My wife, daughter and I spent two days at Kafunta River Lodge before our 2 hour transfer to Three River camp. We were met by TJ (what a great host!) who showed us around and explained all we needed to know. Accommodation at Three Rivers is large tents (that description really doesn't do the accommodation justice!). Attached to the side of the tent is a staircase up to a raised platform overlooking the river. Here you find your star bed. If you visit, you must experience this, sleeping under the stars (and a mosquito net) listening to the sounds of the bush all around you. Fabulous! There's nothing quite like listening to hippos munching on food just outside your tent in the middle of the night. Our guide was David. He was brilliant! So knowledgeable, from tree to termites, he seemed to know it all. Over the two days we did early morning drives, night drives and amazing walking safaris too. Following lion tracks on foot is a brilliant experience. The food was brilliant. The staff behind the scenes do such a wonderful job! Breakfast was at dawn sat around the camp fire. Evening meal had all visitors to the camp seated together. There are only 5 tents so there are never many people. It was great to hear some of TJ's experiences on safari. It wasn't unusual to have wildlife just wandering through camp. We saw so much. We would still be there if we could. Did not want to leave. This is so remote and cut off from everywhere. Fabulous.

This was our second time at Three Rivers (Aug 2019, Sept 2023), and I'd happily go back again. The game viewing is good, the accommodation is great, and the food (especially lunches!) outstanding. The camp is small, the atmosphere very friendly, and you feel right in the middle of the wildlife. The game viewing may be a bit more hit & miss that further inside South Luangwa national park, but we seemed to get lucky most days. The Kafunta drivers and guides are outstanding.

Dear Darren, Thank you for your most recent review, and for visiting us once again at Kafunta River Lodge (3rd visit- and Three Rivers Camp! We're very happy to read that you had a great stay, that's what the team is striving to provide of course! Your feedback will be shared with them. You are right, the game viewing may be more "challenging" down there - it's the fact that animals rarely see vehicles and people as it is so remote and isolated. It's a change from the more busy area around Mfuwe, but it's great to try both and understand the dynamics of what a pure wilderness can and should be. We're very happy that you understand this so well, and we look forward to your next visit. Most sincerely, Izzy

When you’re at Three Rivers Lodge you really feel like you’re away from it all (and you are!). It’s in a more remote area of the park and there isn’t any Wi-Fi, but that was one of the things we loved about it, we really enjoyed our time there.

The skybeds were great with the expansive sky overhead and the sounds of the bush. The patio provided great views during the day as wildlife walked right by.

I had expected the game drives to be better than they were since we were so remote (we never saw another safari vehicle), but the game drives were much better in the main part of the park. Don’t let that dissuade you from visiting Three Rivers because the overall experience more than made up for it and the wildlife encounters we did have were truly spectacular. I’ve been on safari in six countries at countless parks and this was a unique experience, wholeheartedly recommend.

Dear AprilNFlorida, Thank you very much for your review of Three Rivers Camp following your recent visit. I'm delighted to read that you've enjoyed your stay, and mostly you've understood the nature of Three Rivers Camp - a getaway to pure wilderness and true "disconnection". I'm also glad you've enjoyed the star bed. You are right, the game viewing in that area of the park is considered "slower", but I prefer to use the word "wilder" as it is a chance to see animals acting as they really do in the wild. We always suggest combining a stay at Three Rivers Camp (or our other rustic camp Island Bush Camp not far away) with our main lodge Kafunta River Lodge which is in the main Mfuwe area. That way, you get the best of both worlds in terms of wildlife observation - the superb sightings in Mfuwe of animals fairly habituated to vehicles and the more natural behaviour of impalas and leopards in the most remote part of the park where vehicles are an oddity to them. Thank you again for taking the time to post this recommendation! We hope to see you again in the future. Most sincerely, Izzy

We spent three nights in Three Rivers Camp. There, you have the possibility to sleep in a star-bed directly open sky. What an experience! So wonderful. Unfortunately we have been there at full moon. :-)
So, to enjoy the full range of stars we have to come back again... then not in full moon season. :-) Hope to make this true as soon as poosible!
The staffs are very friendly and cary! TJ (the Camp Manager) has a wonderful kind of humor. We enjoyed our stay a lot. Hope to see you soon, guys and thanks a lot again, for making our stay so wonderful!

At the end of August 2022 we stayed at the Three River Camp for 4 nights. Sleeping under the open sky, only with mosquito net-in the tree house-remains unforgettable in this starry sky. The staff more than helpful, the food very tasty, what more could you want, The highlight was our guide John, who looked after us here and in Kafunta excellent.Highly recommended!
