Ila Lodge – Kafue – Run by Green Safaris

A luxury tented lodge … very exclusive. The staff are warm and welcoming. They pay attention to every request and are ever so helpful. The luxury tents were well appointed … great care in sanitizing and fresh products are set out.

We loved every moment of our two days stay at Ila Lodge. The game drives too were exhilarating … we were with Stephen our guide. He was excellent.

The only drawback we found was the lunch and dinner menus. There were only two choices given per meal … Meal One - Pork or Vegetarian. Meal 2 Fish or Vegetarian …. But no other choice. It was quite restrictive coming from such a high-end lodge. They should have offered more choices …. Chicken / beef. Not everyone cares for pork or fish.

The breakfasts were generous …full English breakfast … well prepared and delicious.

Ila Safari Lodge is perfectly located on the banks of the Kafue River. A short boat ride upstream amongst hippos and crocs (and elephants on the banks!) brings you to the lodge jetty and the smiling faces of the welcoming staff.

The main area is large with plenty of comfortable seating and a fantastic outlook over the river. There is a swimming pool for a refreshing afternoon dip and it is a great place to enjoy your afternoon between activities.

The tented suites are all really private and again, have awesome views of the river. I sat on my decking watching elephants feed and play about on the other side of the river for an hour after arriving. It was amazing to watch and in complete privacy! The rooms are spacious and comfortable, the beds are huge and the showers are powerful and hot! Some of the rooms have indoor & outdoor showers, some have outdoor baths. A little tea and coffee station with homemade (delicious) biscuits is in each room and replenished daily and fresh coffee is delivered to your room each morning. A great way to start the day!

The game viewing in the Kafue is incredible for a couple of reasons. Firstly the Kafue is huge and is filled with a great number of wildlife species. We saw leopard, lions, hippo, elephants, puku, impala and big buffalo herds. Secondly, it is extremely rare to see any other vehicles so your game viewing is completely private. You have reassurance that when you see something truly awesome, you will be able to drink in that moment with just you and you guide, without multiple other vehicles crowded around you after a few minutes. If you want to truly get off the beaten track and immerse yourself in true wilderness, Ila Safari Lodge is the place to be!

Ila is located on a beautiful location, looking out over the Kafue river. The tents are clean, have their own decks and have very comfortable beds, a beautiful bath and relaxing rain showers (with amazing water pressure). The private access to Kafue National Park is very convenient as it saves a lot of time at the main gate and allows a private exploration of the park. The usage of electric game drive vehicles by Ila also gives the game drives a whole new dimension. Not scared by the loud noises of petrol engines anymore, you can get way closer to all the wonderful animals in the Kafue. Our guide Joe was exemplary and the team of mostly locals all kind and professional.

Thank you so much for mentioning one of our major points of pride in your review: our team is almost entirely local! In fact, at Ila Safari Lodge our current team is entirely Zambian. We believe in training up, and in providing work opportunities to people from within nearby communities as much as possible. This means that our team members have a real sense of pride in their work, and are rightfully proud of their vital place in the Green Safaris story. We hope that you will be able to come back again soon and spend time with us once again. All the best, The Ila Safari Lodge Team

A wonderful and lovely safari lodge on the Kafue river! We stayed here for 5 nights in October 2021 an had an amazing time. The staff is well organized, the location is just at the river so while you're having breakfast, lunch or diner you can easily see and hear the hippo's!

The luxury safari tents are really nice and we loved the outdoor view! Great comfy beds.

When you walk to your tent at night you will need an escort because there can be animals around. We saw some hippos at night time and even had a kill in front of the lodge with lions! Also saw a leopard one night in front of the lodge... Just to see this wildlife right in front of the lodge is just amazing!

The staff was really professional and we had a terrific guide (Mozes). He really looked out for us and made sure we had the best time during our safari trips on land with the e-vehicle and on the river with the e-boat. Also really good to see how Green Safari invests in the sustainability at their lodges.

Definitely recommend this place!

What a gorgeous review. Thank you so much, Esther, for taking the time to leave such kind words for our team. We are so happy that you were able to experience a Green Safaris itinerary of sorts, with Ila as one part of your extended trip. And how incredible that you managed to see a lion kill right in front of the lodge... this is the Kafue at its best! We hope to be able to host you again very soon, and that you carry your memories of Zambia with you wherever you go. The Ila Safari Lodge Team

Took a long family staycation weekend at Ila. For us from Southern Province an easy 6 hour drive over the Namwala Ferry, from Lusaka a 3 hour drive along tar. We were welcomed for a light lunch. That was the beginning of 10 meals and over a Kg around my middle. Lovely tented Chalets, with a double roof to cool the structure down, huge bed, that encouraged a good nights sleep, Solar heated shower, indoor and out, so showering on the banks of the Kafue with only hippo as bath guests, and lovely decks on which to sit and just watch the river flow by and i think the guides called it a slumber safari.
Our guide was excellent. 3 game drives, 3 magnificent sightings of lion, 2 of them on a kill, one with cubs. Our last drive was the best with buffalo, kudu, bush buck, bush pig, warthog, Batleur eagle and may others including a lot of elephant, hippo and croc. Often on the drives we would, stop, switch off the engine and listen. What a wonderful way to connect with the world around you.

Thank you so much for this lovely review! We especially love to hear that you felt connected with the world around you during your stay at Ila. We handpicked our location on the Kafue River so that we could settle in and in our own small way protect this wild ecosystem, and for our guests, this means a space where you can truly connect with nature and feel at one with the world. We hope that you will come back very soon so that our team can outdo even your last stay with us. The Ila Safari Lodge Team

Ila Safari Lodge is the perfect destination for a romantic getaway in the heart of the beautiful Kafue National Park.
The luxury tents overlook the Kafue River and have a private deck with outdoor shower or bath tub, a four-poster bed a scenic bathroom and all the comfort and amenities you need for a perfect stay.
The food is delicious and well presented, with à la carte breakfasts and candlelight dinners.
There is a beautiful infinity pool and a little Spa (inside the most lovely floating cabin!) and the activities are amazing.
The lodge has the only e-boat in Zambia and organizes romantic sunset cruises or lunch on board.
You can take part in two game drives per day, once at sunrise and once during the afternoon (with the most romantic bush sundownesr for two) and the lodge has an e-Cruiser for silent safaris!
We also enjoyed a beautifu "bush brunch" arranged for me and my husband only, in a remote location near a creek.
The staff is very nice and friendly and the guides are amazing: they shared with us a lot of interesting fact about the wildlife and the conservation projects of the Park.
Highly recommended if you want to enjoy a conscious and green safari experience!

The feeling of walking through the entrance of the main building at Ila is incredible. The half-moon shape suits the style and the environment absolutely perfectly. Other than the main buildings the tents leave nothing else to be desired.

The staff at Ila has clearly been there for a while, radiating hospitality and friendliness at all times throughout the day. The food they serve is equally impressive and is something to look forward to every lunch and dinner. Last, but certainly not least, the game drives in the Kafue, especially with the electric game drive vehicles, are in a league of their own. The vastness of the park really makes you feel like it’s just you and nature, rarely, if ever, meeting other game drive vehicles.

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave us such a wonderful review. You are correct in that many of our team have been here for a very long time, some even from the beginning! Despite the many challenges of Covid, we have kept on as much of our team as possible and provided alternative working possibilities at our brand new Community Projects for those we couldn't keep on during the pandemic. We believe that staying committed to our staff empowers them to feel true ownership and pride in their work, and this is why they shine so bright when they are at work! We hope to host you again very soon, for more Silent Safari experiences. The Ila Safari Lodge Team

Ila Safari Lodge simultaneously breathes adventure and comfort. Driving up to the lodge, we already saw a huge majestic kudu, which proved to be a good omen for the rest of the trip. In one of the extremely comfortable tents that Ila offers, the mornings may start by being woken up gently at the sounds of hippos, elephants or a lion's growl. It is not unlikely to see wildlife at the premises of the lodge. If that sounds scary, don't worry - you're in the best possible hands, as one of the amazing, capable, and knowledgeable staff members escorts you as you move from your tent to the main area. The guides that do the game drives are incredible - I was amazed by their knowledge on every bird, tree, and game that we saw. To top this, you'll enjoy a glass of gin & tonic as the sun sets, sharing stories with one of the guides. The Kafue Park is one of the most beautiful national parks in the world, without a doubt, so be sure to keep an eye out for wild dogs, bushpigs, leopard, lions, and elephants. Going back to the lodge, the food is of amazing quality, and there is always a vegetarian option provided. Huge compliments to the chef for serving such great food in a rather remote place. The staff is lovely too, and takes care of your every need. Highly recommend!

Did you know that the Kafue National Park is one of the five biggest National Parks in Africa? And yet it has one of the fewest numbers of rooms available across the whole Park, as it is still so relatively undiscovered. We are very aware of our responsibility to protect this pristine wilderness, and we are so grateful that guests such as you give us the support we need in order to do so. Thank you so much for leaving such a lovely review. We hope to be able to host you again soon, for even more wildlife viewing, and so that our guides can test you on all of the knowledge you picked up last time (just kidding -- they love sharing the same facts over again, as they always have some new depth of information to share, so you can come back and learn it all afresh if you like!). From pick up to drop off (three night stay) the service was simply fantastic. Staff pride themselves on working to the highest possible standards of service. From the management team to the chef (special mention - outstanding quality), to the bar and restaurant staff (cheers again - Mosi beer was a welcome plus) the support team, nothing however small, was too much effort. Put simply, thank you does not go far enough. We owe you if ever in Scotland!

The tents are comfortable, very clean and functional. They are far enough apart to feel isolated which helps makes special. Green credentials fully deserved. Everything as expected. Views across the river are amazing especially early morning. Camp itself well designed with areas for guests to socialise if so chose. There is also a cool pool us a few sunloungers which were very comfortable. WiFi was bit on/off at times but mostly accessible in evening when we required.

Now to the game drives (inc. lots of lion, leopard, elephant and rare sightings of civet, genet, porcupine and a serval cat) and our driver Francis. Francis you are some guy! Rarely meet someone with your knowledge and insight. Encyclopaedic. What a pleasure. Even more rare to meet someone this friendly and entertaining. Had a blast. Banter very funny. Still havent seen a giraffe up a tree, so yes they are superb at hiding! Joking aside, once more Fiona and I would like to thank you for everything. Take care and go forward with our best wishes.

Finally, there are few times in life when a holiday experience hits every possible note as this first part of our time in Kafue did here. Thanks to Anya at Pembury Tours for suggesting and organising.

This lodge offers a high class, high quality and comfortable safari experience. The staff are attentive and friendly, the meals are beautifully cooked, the safari options are excellent and the rooms are beautiful.

While I'm not an experienced safari goer I found this to be a much more private experience than other safaris. We had the vehicles to ourselves and we rarely saw other trips.

For early morning safaris there would be an early breakfast of coffee, tea, toast made on the fire and porridge (warmed on the fire). Once we got back we could sit and order a more traditional breakfast!

Lunch and dinner were provided with numerous courses and choice between meat and vegetarian options.

Our first safari drive, in the morning, felt magical but we didn't see many big animals - just a few antelope, birds and other small things. But later that day the staff came to us to say they thought they knew where some lions could be found so why don't we try again? This time we saw plenty of elephants, crocodiles and a pack of lions! On each of the trips was a cool box with drinks and some tea and biscuits.

The next day we went fishing and our guide helped us fish and bait our hooks. We caught a few fish, saw some curious hippos, and threw everything back as the sun set on the river. And we also did a brilliant walking tour with a guide called Jack Sparrow which was fantastic. Jack was extremely knowledgeable and pointed out tons of interesting stuff.

Ilia Lodge is in the park so a few times there were wild animals on the path between the main area and our accommodation. But the guides are there to keep you safe and would accompany us on the (albeit short) walk.

I would recommend this lodge to anyone who wanted to visit this park. Top stuff.
